However, as the password characters are hidden on screen, the user can't verify the characters stored for the password are really those he thinks to. This situation has been proned to many bugs as : - the keys bindings layout could not match the layout printed on the user keyboard for many reasons. - the keys bindings layout can change between installer and 1st boot, or graphical session. In both case the user has an unuseable system. The hack right now that many use out of USA is to first enter a root password that only contains ASCII characters (no #,@ etc...) and avoid Q,W,N,M letters. A proposal to fix this bug vould be : 1. Have another texbox on the same screen where the user could test his keyboard layout. 2. Have an option to not mask the password in the textbox while typing it like we have on Android for example (only the last letter is shown) Thanks. -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.1 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'proposed-updates'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.utf8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- fixed 720339 0.197 thanks Hi, As there were 2 bugs asking for this feature, I forgot to close this one with the upload of 0.197, so I'm doing it now. Bug#806332: Bug: task-french-kde-desktop
Package: version: last Language: French KDE plasma: 5.4.2 Environnement: stretch Qt: 5.5.1 Kernel: 4.2.0-1-amd64 64-bits Hi, After about 15 minutes without going to the other virtual desktops, they become black (In all activities). It is like other screens hibernates, but you can not unlock this. If you use two desktops, just the other "hibernates". But if you let hibernate all the computer, the hibernating windows are not unlocked. But if you go on the black screen, you can retrieve only the last open virtual desktop with ctrl-F8. Best regards Jeanne
Bug#806341: zipl-installer: Using standard device names can result in a non-bootable system
Package: zipl-installer Version: 0.0.28 Severity: normal Tags: d-i patch Dear Maintainer, Currently, the root= statement used by zipl will contain a standard device name like /dev/dasda1. This will only work reliable if only one disk device is used while booting. If more than one disk device is discovered the name of the device used by the root filesystem might change resulting in a not found root filesystem. I suggest to use the filesystem UUID of the root filesystem where possible, similar to what's used in /etc/fstab. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.2.0-1-s390x (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) >From a29dbc2bc4548b39c1dc340bf2c02f70724b72a1 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Viktor Mihajlovski Date: Thu, 26 Nov 2015 17:45:51 +0100 Subject: [PATCH] postinst: use UUID for root device parameter where possible The approach to use a default device node like /dev/dasdn for the root= kernel parameter is unsafe if more than one disk device is brought online during IPL as the device node identifier could change. A safer way is to construct the root= parameter to match the /etc/fstab entry for the root fs. Here we use block-attr --uuid to find out the root filesystem's UUID and pass this via kernel parameter. If no UUID is found fall back to the mapdevfs-determined device. If the root file system is on a logical volume, it is currently not possible to mount it by UUID in the initrd. Therefore fall back to the device mapper path which is unique (enough). Bug#693219: Doesn't mention --foreign in help output
Control: rename -1 Doesn't mention --foreign or --second-stage in help output Control: forcemerge -1 806342 Hi Steve, all, 2012-11-14 11:51 Steve McIntyre: Package: debootstrap Version: 1.0.42 Severity: minor $ sudo debootstrap --arch=armhf sid sid-armhf ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ fails with the errors W: Failure trying to run: chroot /tmp/sid-armhf mount -t proc proc /proc W: See /tmp/sid-armhf/debootstrap/debootstrap.log for details because I'm running on amd64. That's fine, but it would be helpful if the --help output mentioned the "--foreign" option to stop this happening. Maybe also pick up on the failure to run something in the chroot if the arch specified doesn't match the native one and tell the user about --foreign then? Seems that I sent my report too quickly, I failed to check the bug lists for "--foreign", so merging with this previous bug report makes sense, I think. From my report: -- --help says: --second-stage-target=DIRRun second stage in a subdirectory instead of root (can be used to create a foreign chroot) (requires --second-stage) but neither --second-stage nor --foreign are mentioned. -- Cheers. -- Manuel A. Backport fix for #789600?
I've pushed a trivial fix for this today, so new unstable/testing d-i builds should be more useful for folks on GPT media. What do you think about adding this for new Jessie builds? Pondering experimenting using grub to replace isolinux
Hi folks, Just a heads-up... I'm planning on hacking on CD/DVD building a little more and experimenting with dropping isolinux on amd64/i386. I'm told that Grub can do all the needed stuff to boot CDs as well, so I'm curious to test it. If it works, it *might* make sense to then use Grub for all the modes we're supporting (BIOS and UEFI, CD and USB) with our installation media instead of the two-pronged approach we're using now. I've not started on this yet - if I can make anything work, I'll announce some builds for people to help me test with. -- Steve McIntyre, Cambridge, UK.st...@einval.com Support the Campaign for Audiovisual Free Expression: http://www.eff.org/cafe/

What do you > think about adding this for new Jessie builds? (And how's the best way > to do that?) Ah, I initially looked at debian-cd, but that's just debian-installer. Apart from a missing changelog entry, I'm happy to cherry-pick the said commit into the jessie branch for a later upload for a point release: | commit c9e26e4e97b72fefd6c1ea894aba33750fdded53 | Author: Steve McIntyre | Date: Thu Nov 26 16:20:37 2015 + | | Add the part_gpt module into the core grub image | | Make it easier for users doing slightly different things with our | images; include support for GPT partition tables as well as msdos | Closes: #789600 | I'm not familiar with this area. Is it sufficient to add it to some search command to make it available? I mean: will the grub module be where it's expected, or is some pre-existing copy step needed for that to work? (I see it's available in various grub-* packages, and a suitable grub-* package will likely be installed at this point, so I suppose the addition to the search command might be sufficient, but let's be sure.) Hi, Steve McIntyre wrote: > I'm told > that Grub can do all the needed stuff to boot CDs as well, so I'm > curious to test it. Debian kfreebsd mini.iso already uses GRUB2 for BIOS. amd64 and i386 have about the same equipment: Volume id: 'ISOIMAGE' El Torito catalog : 55 1 El Torito cat path : /boot.catalog El Torito images : N Pltf B Emul Ld_seg Hdpt Ldsiz LBA El Torito boot img : 1 BIOS y none 0x 0x00 45452 El Torito img path : 1 /boot/grub/i386-pc/eltorito.img El Torito img opts : 1 boot-info-table System area options: 0x0201 System area summary: MBR protective-msdos-label cyl-align-off ISO image size/512 : 23512 Partition offset : 0 MBR heads per cyl : 64 MBR secs per head : 32 MBR partition table: N Status TypeStart Blocks MBR partition : 1 0x80 0xcd123511 xorriso -as mkisofs options for reproduction: -V 'ISOIMAGE' --modification-date='2015090121223300' --protective-msdos-label -partition_cyl_align off -partition_offset 0 -partition_hd_cyl 64 -partition_sec_hd 32 -G --interval:local_fs:0s-15s:zero_mbrpt:'debian_kfreebsd_i386_mini.iso' -c '/boot.catalog' -b '/boot/grub/i386-pc/eltorito.img' -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table (The argument of -G is a novelty of xorriso-1.4.0. It cuts block 0 to 15 out of the original ISO and zeros the MBR partition table. Then this is used instead of the original GRUB2 payload of the System Area. xorriso-1.4.2 will have a command to replay such settings automatically. So one can modify a bootable ISO without having to deal with above -as mkisofs options.) The partiton generating options -isohybrid-gpt-basdat -isohybrid-apm-hfsplus will not be applicable any more. grub-mkrescue uses -as mkisofs option -efi-boot-part --efi-boot-image to expose the El Torito Boot Image as EFI System Partition. That boot image gets marked by -efi-boot /path/in/iso/efi.img Afaik GRUB2's grub-mkrescue produces only the "protective" MBR partition table. I.e. there is no mountable partition with the ISO filesystem. One has to mount the base device to get to the ISO. I dimly remember to have once proposed -partition_offset 16 to Vladimir Serbinenko for use in grub-mkrescue. He was not convinced then. For the sake of UEFI compliance i now repeat my proposal to let the EFI System Partition be an appended data blob rather than sharing the El Torito Boot Image file inside the ISO. This would avoid nested partitions, which UEFI 2.4 clearly forbids. (grub-mkrescue produces no nested partitions because it produces no mountable ISO partition around the EFI partition.) Have a nice day :) Thomas
