Bug#793426: Debian 8.1 - missing separate /usr in guided encrypted LVM partitioning scheme
Package: debian-installer Version: --- Architecture: amd64 UEFI selected at boot The guided LVM encrypted partitioning layout does not create a separate /usr partition and creates a 8-10 GB / (root) partition. This happens in both separate /var, /tmp, /home installer option and separate /home option - guided encrypted LVM. You end up with a 8-10 GB / (root) (which includes the /usr partition) and this seems too small for a desktop system. If you don't want to give the user the option of a separate / (root) partition, for some reason, / (root) has to be assigned more space. In previous versions of Debian there seems to have been a /var, /tmp, /home, /usr option. Now there is only separate /var, /tmp, /home, which seems to be a bug. Hope this is enough information. I agree the maximum should be raised. > In previous versions of Debian there seems to have been a /var, /tmp, > /home, /usr option. The rules for the root partition size were changed at the same time to account for this. Bug#793426: Debian 8.1 - missing separate /usr in guided encrypted LVM partitioning scheme
Maybe this should be reported under: 'installation-reports' and not debian-installer as I did. Debian bug reporting seems a bit confusing. I still think it's a bug - I can't install a usable Debian desktop system, but call it whatever you like - feature request, or something else :) But OK - there are several issues here: 1) Why did the /usr partition get removed from the separate /var, /tmp, /home guided encrypted LVM installation option? It might be that when it got removed, it caused the other problem: 2) The partitioning scheme allocates wrong partition sizes for a desktop computer. I have also tested the separate /home option. The same problem: / (root) is allocated too little disk space. It is not uncommon to have more than 10 GB in /usr. For example, try installing KDE + GNOME with less than 10 GB. A desktop user might want to do this. In the two installation options I described, /usr is part of / (root) and / (root) is 10 GB or less. I haven't tested the encrypted LVM + everything on one partition option. It probably would work in that case, as only /boot and / is created in that case.
