As far as I can determine, documentation describing netcfg's behaviour
when writing /e/n/i at the end of the install is non-existant. It appears
to follow a principle of producing maximum surprise. I'll mention that
#709017 also has the same origin as this bug

Another text-based network management tool is ceni. It is maintained by
the same team which maintains Debian's wpasupplicant and is at

Bug#728126: installation-reports: poweredge 1950 failed to boot amd64 images

2013-10-28 Thread Samuel Thibault
Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

Hello,

I've just installed Debian on a Dell PowerEdge 1950. I however couldn't boot
amd64 images, I had to install it with an i386 image (from which I'm sending
this report, so all details below are about that machine). More details below.

Samuel

Comments/Problems:

I have tried dd-ing amd64 images (tried DVD-1 and netinst) to my USB stick, but
they wouldn't boot.

The BIOS would show me an option to boot from the stick, but I would only get
the following message: "isolinux.bin missing or corrupted."

When doing exactly the same, but with an i386 image, the BIOS would show me a
different option to boot from the stick: it appears inside an "hdd" submenu,
while with amd64 images, it appears in the main boot menu.

I guess the difference comes from the EFI part of amd64 images, which probably
somehow disturbs the BIOS.

I don't plan to have a look at the source code itself, but I can build test
images and boot the machine with it (it is spare hardware)
