Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they were caused by broken hardware and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are quite old (and thus likely fixed today) and/or
- moreinfo was asked and not given.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

A Beta-2 netinst image was put on a USB stick with cat. A second vfat
partition held needed firmware. The installer does not hang as it did
with Beta-1 but it displayed a message that firmware was missing. This
should not have happened as the firware was already provided. Answering
"yes" gets the same screen back. Message #46 in #683849 relates the same
behaviour.

The single disk on the machine was partitioned as

   /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sda5 /dev/sda6

and the log showed mountmedia not getting beyond /dev/sda2. Executing
/bin/mountmedia gives the same outcome.

I am not by any means skilled in writing or interpreting shell scripts,
so what comes next is a tentative explanation.

If $PARTITION_TYPE" is equal to "0x5" or "0xf" then media_mounted and
checkcontents do not run. So does this not mean

for dev in $(devlist); do
if try_mount $dev; then
exit 0 # success
fi
done

would cause the script to exit before all the partitions had been
searched?

Regards,

Brian.

Comments/Problems: System hung during package installs for Desktop Environment,
SSH services
and basic system package sets. System hang was reproducible at same spot.
Watched VT screen of F4 and there was no kernel dump or error.
The system became unresponsive. Pressing numlock or caps lock
had no effect on LED for same. One first attempt, used apt repo at Dal.ca. On
second
attempt used apt repo at uwaterloo.ca Computer Science club. No difference.

Sorry I don't have the final line of the package that was being downloaded
at the time the system stopped responding. I can tell you it did download
perhaps 100 to 300 packages before it seized. It gave no error. It behaved
as if it was taking a long time to download or whatever, except
that when I checked after 30 minutes or so of no progress, I saw the keyboard
wasn't responding with the standard numlock/capslock LED test of system health.
Control-Alt F1, etc. were also attempted to see what another VT might show.
Finally, a Stop-A was done, which should cause the PROM to pop us out to a ok >
prompt, and it did nothing.

This failure was observed twice, once with the progress bar view,
and once with the details view from F4 virtual terminal.

System seemed healthy prior to install attempt - it had been running Solaris 10
with ZFS
mirrored RAID on same disks for a few years and no hardware problems.

Then I copied the iso-hybrid file to an USB stick and booted my Asus EeePC
1015BX netbook. I saw the first screen (where you could enter the boot
options), pressed the return key, Wheezy begins to start (I saw the some lines
of the boot process) but than hang up with a black screen. When I switch to
another console (Alt+F2 key) the screen is almost black with some casual white
lines but no text or command prompt.

Debian Stable (Squeeze) works fine on my netbook.

If you need further information please let me know.

Best wishes
Oliver

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

< madduck> right now, pxelinux.0 and pxelinux.cfg are symlinks into
   debian-installer/${arch}/
< madduck> this won't work if i need to support 2+ arches
< madduck> thus, instead i propose to remove the symlinks
< madduck> remove the debian-installer/${arch}/ prefix in the arch's
   pxelinux.cfg/default file
   (`sed -i -e 's,debian-installer/[^/]*/,,'
debian-installer/*/pxelinux.cfg/default`)
< madduck> and then advise users to configure dhcpd with
< madduck> filename "/debian-installer/${arch}/pxelinux.0";
< madduck> instead of
< madduck> filename "/pxelinux.0";
< madduck> works fine here.

As discussed in #667681 it would be very useful to be able to override certain
per-machine settings locally. For example Boot-Device defaults to /dev/sda1 on
Dreamplug but can also be sdb1 depending on local configuration.

I have implemented this and pushed to gitorious (see below). I'll also attach
the patches shortly.

Ian.
