As I remember it (and as Colin said), you need pcmciautils for 16-bit
PCMCIA cards. I actually run wheezy on an old laptop which does support
16-bit cards (it runs Gnome in fallback mode). I don't use any 16-bit
cards, though.

Perhaps the ideal solution would be to only install pcmciautils in d-i
if the system really does have PCMCIA/Cardbus hardware. It should be
possible to check via /sys.

(Speaking as pcmciautils co-maintainer and former pcmcia-cs maintainer...)

I just logged in, the hostkey changed. It seems that a buildd's running
again and d-i.debian.org has recent daily builds. So that's probably
solved.

Oh. Could a /home partition or network share be not mounted?

The machines database still calls it a mipsel buildd, and before the
outage it was responsible for the nightly d-i builds on that arch.

"Disk space:40g+120g" sounds to me like /home might be the 120 GB disk.

Yes. It's been a couple of days since the last failure. But, as usual,
one never notices when things are again working as expected..:-)

Thanks for your followup on this, Phil.

Dear Maintainer,

Installation used a wireless network interface.
This is much improved wrt the Debian Squeeze Installer.

Slight problem loading the wireless card's firmware blob
during the installation. Easily worked around.

Small quibble with the installation of the grub boot loader.

Wireless network detection excellent:
  - supports WPA (for Squeeze needed to revert WAP to WEP)
  - no need to run network configuration again after 'Install tasks'
- (for Squeeze had to after network connection dropped)
  - LAN based caching proxy used without incident.

Boot off USB worked:
  - used the special USB-ZIP geometry with the data in partition 4
  - partition was formatted with ext2

Load of firmware blob for network device failed:
  - tried again with another USB stick:
- conventional geometry with data in partition 1
- paritition was formatted with vfat

Grub install failed:
  - proposes to install on first hard drive (as always)
  - but first hard drive was the USB stick
  - install failed, USB stick not damaged (whew)
  - post installation:
- regenerated device map and reinstalled grub bootloader

Is there a good point during the install to remove the USB stick
to ensure the real disk is detected as the first hard drive ?

Bug#698706: installation-reports: Installation Report using loopback interface

2013-01-22 Thread Paul Bryan Roberts
Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
asks us to file an installation report even if there are no problems.

Installation used a wireless network interface.
This is much improved wrt the Debian Squeeze Installer.

Slight problem loading the wireless card's firmware blob
during the installation. Easily worked around.

One issue with the PCMCIA network card (not with the Installer):
firmware blob fails to reload coming out of suspend to RAM.

This was an installation over a working Squeeze installation. So ...

Will the installation look for the firmware blob on the hard drive ?
Can I tell it where to look ?

there is a jenkins job checking this:
http://jenkins.debian.net/view/d-i_misc/job/d-i_parse_build_logs/

it will notice when problems are gone and can easily configured to send mail
too.

currently that job is still marked unstable as no armel builds from today are
available.

If I remember correctly, ISA cards cannot be automatically detected.
Thus automatic loading of the driver cannot be archived.
So module has to be included in /etc/modules.

Boot off USB failed:

  - BIOS issue:
- worked for Squeeze when I used the conventional geometry + vfat

So boot by-hand from the grub menu (from the previous installation):
  set root=(hd2.4)
  linux /amd64/linux desktop=xfce
  initrd /amd64/initrd.gz
  boot

Grub install failed:
  - proposes to install on first hard drive (as always)
  - but first hard drive was the USB stick

However:
  - reminded me to run grub install on both hard drives of the RAID I
  - pity this involves fetching and installing the package all over again.

Blank screen until our own X-11 confiugration installed.
Combination of an old SiS Chipset, a modern widescreen flat screen and
the X-org SiS video driver. Same as under Squeeze.

Well some ISA cards supported plug and play, so they could be detected
and configured. Most ISA cards are not plug and play though.

Of course some can still be detected by probing, but that's not so safe
in all cases and involves loading the driver just to check in most cases.

Dear Maintainer,

http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
asks us to file an installation report even if there are no problems.

Installation was fine. Well done.

Temporary issue with power management and swap but I don't blame the installer.

Slight problem loading the wireless card's firmware blob

One issue with the PCMCIA network card (not with the Installer):
firmware blob fails to reload coming out of suspend to RAM.

This was an installation over a working Squeeze installation. So ...

Will the installation look for the firmware blob on the hard drive ?
Can I tell it where to look ?

Dear Maintainer,

http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
asks us to file an installation report even if there are no problems.

Installation used a wireless network interface.
This is much improved wrt the Debian Squeeze Installer.

Slight problem loading the wireless card's firmware blob
during the installation. Easily worked around.

Small quibble with the installation of the grub boot loader.

Comments/Problems:

Dear Maintainer,
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

Installation was fine. Well done.

One quibble with the installation of grub.

One issue with the default X configuration based on the hardware probe
that produces a blank screen. Not the installer's fault.

Boot off USB failed:

Dear Maintainer,

http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
asks us to file an installation report even if there are no problems.

Installation was fine. Well done.

Small quibbles with choice of filesystems and grub installation.

Issues (not Installer issues) with KDE desktop effects and suspend to RAM.

Bug#698733: Fix detection of /usr/ partition as a GNU/Linux root partition when /lib* directories are moved to /usr/ completely (e.g. in Fedora 17/18)

2013-01-22 Thread Hedayat Vatankhah

Package: os-prober
Version: 1.57
Tags: patch

In distributions which have moved /lib* completely inside /usr/, if /usr
is in a separate partition os-prober will consider that /usr partition
as a root partition. This patch makes sure that /usr partitions are not
detected as / partition by checking if that partition also contains a
/boot directory which is supposed to exist in /. If not, another
directory like /dev could be used.

Bug#694668: A patch improve the performance of os-prober for systems with many partitions

2013-01-22 Thread Hedayat Vatankhah
Yes, you are right specially since the patch does many things at once. I
am going to break up the patch to smaller ones so that I can maintain
them personally. I thought that you might also prefer this. Therefore,
I'll post the smaller patches. But if you think that is not needed, let
me know.
Anyway, attached you'll find a small patch which just replaces usage of
'basename' with shell string processing (already used in some parts of
the code, so should be supported in the target shell(s)).

going to be considered during the 'jessie' release cycle.

Comments/Problems:

I netbooted the installer image off another Debian box, that worked
fine. I had to provide firmware for the tigon3 network device through an
USB stick. The rest of the installation (including desktop task) went
just as fine, I manually partitioned the disk to leave space for a
possible FreeBSD install I might want to try.

Rebooting showed a problem: the root partition /dev/sdb1 wasn't found.
As it happens, I left the USB stick I used to copy the firmware
connected and it got assigned to /dev/sda while the disk that was the
target of the installation got /dev/sdb. /etc/fstab has no problem as it
is UUID based, but the SILO configuration had root=/dev/sdb1 in it and
so the initrd failed to mount root.

Manually giving root=/dev/sda1 on the SILO command line let it boot and
I manually corrected silo.conf.

There's now some other problems that are presumably not installer related
(no 3D acceleration even after radeon firmware installed, GNOME in
fallback mode uses the same color for text and window background).
