Bug#698105: Please remove pcmciautils from laptop task

As I remember it (and as Colin said), you need pcmciautils for 16-bit PCMCIA cards. I actually run wheezy on an old laptop which does support 16-bit cards (it runs Gnome in fallback mode). I don't use any 16-bit cards, though. Perhaps the ideal solution would be to only install pcmciautils in d-i if the system really does have PCMCIA/Cardbus hardware. It should be possible to check via /sys. Well some ISA cards supported plug and play, so they could be detected and configured. Most ISA cards are not plug and play though. Of course some can still be detected by probing, but that's not so safe in all cases and involves loading the driver just to check in most cases. -- Len Sorensen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#698733: Fix detection of /usr/ partition as a GNU/Linux root partition when /lib* directories are moved to /usr/ completely (e.g. in Fedora 17/18)
Package: os-prober Version: 1.57 Tags: patch In distributions which have moved /lib* completely inside /usr/, if /usr is in a separate partition os-prober will consider that /usr partition as a root partition. This patch makes sure that /usr partitions are not detected as / partition by checking if that partition also contains a /boot directory which is supposed to exist in /. If not, another directory like /dev could be used. diff -up os-prober-1.57/os-probes/mounted/common/90linux-distro.usrmovefix os-prober-1.57/os-probes/mounted/common/90linux-distro --- os-prober-1.57/os-probes/mounted/common/90linux-distro.usrmovefix 2013-01-23 00:39:20.333616357 +0330 +++ os-prober-1.57/os-probes/mounted/common/90linux-distro 2013-01-23 00:39:51.834222545 +0330 @@ -17,7 +17,7 @@ type="$3" # symlinks we need to also check in $dir/usr/lib* for distributions that # moved /lib* to /usr and only left symlinks behind. # TODO: look for ld-linux.so on arches that have it -if (ls "$dir"/lib*/ld*.so* || ls "$dir"/usr/lib*/ld*.so*) >/dev/null 2>/dev/null; then +if (ls "$dir"/lib*/ld*.so* && [ -d "$dir/boot" ] || ls "$dir"/usr/lib*/ld*.so*) >/dev/null 2>/dev/null; then if [ -e "$dir/etc/debian_version" ]; then short="Debian" long="$(printf "Debian GNU/Linux (%s)\n" "$(cat "$dir/etc/debian_version")")"
Bug#694668: A patch improve the performance of os-prober for systems with many partitions
Yes, you are right specially since the patch does many things at once. I am going to break up the patch to smaller ones so that I can maintain them personally. I thought that you might also prefer this. Therefore, I'll post the smaller patches. But if you think that is not needed, let me know. Anyway, attached you'll find a small patch which just replaces usage of 'basename' with shell string processing (already used in some parts of the code, so should be supported in the target shell(s)). /*Cyril Brulebois */ wrote on Tue, 25 Dec 2012 19:33:56 +0100: Hi, Hedayat Vatankhah (29/11/2012): This bug is reported by one of our users, and also the patch is provided by him. I had to provide firmware for the tigon3 network device through an USB stick. The rest of the installation (including desktop task) went just as fine, I manually partitioned the disk to leave space for a possible FreeBSD install I might want to try. Rebooting showed a problem: the root partition /dev/sdb1 wasn't found. As it happens, I left the USB stick I used to copy the firmware connected and it got assigned to /dev/sda while the disk that was the target of the installation got /dev/sdb. /etc/fstab has no problem as it is UUID based, but the SILO configuration had root=/dev/sdb1 in it and so the initrd failed to mount root. Manually giving root=/dev/sda1 on the SILO command line let it boot and I manually corrected silo.conf. There's now some other problems that are presumably not installer related (no 3D acceleration even after radeon firmware installed, GNOME in fallback mode uses the same color for text and window background). -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report.
