Right. You've got a machine which will boot via EFI, and we've just
added that in beta3. Looks like we need some work on the menus
there. :-/

Hi maintainer,

While trying to install a host over network using the Wheezy netboot image[1],
I noticed that it can't be installed with following warning appearing in
syslog:

WARNING **: no packages matching running kernel 3.2.0-3-amd64 in archive

and following message in installer:

"If you are installing from a mirror, you can work around this problem by
trying to install a different version of Debian"

From my investigation, it seems current netboot image ships with kernel
version 3.2.0-3 whereas .udebs present on server (in Packages.(bz2|gz)[2]) are
for version 3.2.0-4.

Could you please publish a new netboot image, assuming you do want users to
test debian-installer for installing over network ?

Bug#610952: debian-installer: Partman can't create correct partitions

2012-11-08 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
reassign 610952 partman-partitioning 79
severity 610952 normal
thanks

I think this belongs to partman-partitioning, marking the version in
Squeeze affected as I can reproduce it. And I think it should have at
least normal severity.

Installing 6.0.5 using pxeboot on a 35GB VMware container with the
following recipe

d-i partman-auto/expert_recipe string \
  boot-root ::  \
  768 1 1024 linux-swap \
   $primary{ } method{ swap } format{ } \
  . \
  2048 10 -1 ext4 \
  $primary{ } method{ format } format{ }\
  use_filesystem{ } filesystem{ ext4 } \
  mountpoint{ / } \
  .

results in the following partition table:

root@debian:~# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 34.4 GB, 34359738368 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4177 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000455f5

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 125 999424 82 Linux swap /
Solaris
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 125417832552960 83 Linux

You cannot even display that partition table in cfdisk because it bails
out

FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 1:
Partition ends in the final partial cylinder
Press any key to exit cfdisk

As described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-base/+bug/551965
adding

d-i partman/alignment select cylinder

fixes the issue.

root@debian:~# fdisk -l

Bug#610952: debian-installer: Partman can't create correct partitions

2012-11-08 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
reassign 610952 util-linux
forcemerge 613589 610952
thanks

After a bit more searching I found that the partition table created by
partman is perfectly fine, but cfdisk in squeeze is just too stupid to
display it correctly.

(parted) unit s
(parted) print
Model: VMware Virtual disk (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 67108864s
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos

Number Start EndSize Type File system Flags
 1 2048s 2000895s 1998848s primary linux-swap(v1)
 2 2000896s 67106815s 65105920s primary ext4

This bug has been fixed upstream and should be fixed in Wheezy, but the
request for backporting the fix in Bug #610952 has not brought any
result.

Running the most recent Wheezy d-i installer on kfreebsd fails, when
/boot is configured as a separate UFS partition, and / is on ZFS. The
installation fails with:

Nov 9 00:07:55 grub-installer: info: Installing grub on '/dev/ada0'

Nov 9 00:08:56 main-menu[106]: WARNING **: Menu item 'grub-installer'

If I chroot into /target at this stage, and run "update-grub" manually,
I get:

Generating grub.cfg ...
Found kernel of FreeBSD: /boot/kfreebsd-9.0-2-amd64.gz
Found kernel module directory: /lib/modules/9.0-2-amd64
ls: cannot access /boot/zfs/zpool.cache: No such file or directory

Creating the zpool.cache file manually ("local" is my ZFS pool) in a
chroot to /target with

zpool set cachefile=/boot/zfs/zpool.cache local

both, update-grub called manually within the /target chroot, and from
the d-i menu it runs through. The resulting system boots correctly then.

Note: This issues does *NOT* happen when /boot is no separate partition,
but a ZFS volume as well.
