Beta2 preparation: proposed unblocks for D-I packages with low-hanging fruits
I went through packages with pending changes in git. I first selected those I was thinking to be quite harmless. Bug#685801: Wheezy can't boot on netbook
Hello Ben, please have a look at bug 655505. I reported the same or similar bug at 11. January 2012 with the installer. Now I wanted to try out if the bug is solved. Because I use the netbook daily for work now, I don't install a new release at my own risk. That's why I first try a live version and if everything is fine I will install later. Because there is no official live built image of Wheezy I had to built it myself. For testing a beta release of Wheezy it would be good if you create an official live built image rather than to force the user to make an installation. Best wishes Oliver -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#685801: Wheezy can't boot on netbook

Now I wanted to try out > if the bug is solved. Sure, no problem with that. But in that case, since you did an actual install, an installation-reports bug would have been appropriate. Also, if you think it's the same bug, why not file additional info on 655505 instead of filing a new bug? (Though looking at that bug now, it would probably be better to reassign to the kernel if your suspicions that it's a kernel issue are correct. It doesn't seem like a bug in the installer.) > Because I use the netbook daily for work now, I don't install a new > release at my own risk. That's why I first try a live version and if > everything is fine I will install later. Because there is no > official live built image of Wheezy I had to built it myself. And no problem with that, either. However, booting a live image is not an install, so an installation-reports bug is not appropriate. > For testing a beta release of Wheezy it would be good if you create > an official live built image rather than to force the user to make > an installation. And as soon as we (speaking for the debian-live team, now) can, we will, of course. The fact that we have not yet should tell you something. (It is not from lack of caring that they are not there yet.) Meanwhile, please file bugs against appropriate (pseudo-)packages to help us track issues better. Had this particular issue been a problem with the live build service or live build toolchain, the live team might not know it because they generally do not follow the live-boot list. The only reason I even discovered that this involved a live image is because you put "netbook" in the subject which is a particular interest of mine. I do not want to discourage you from filing reports. It is much appreciated. I am just concerned about them being misdirected so they don't get attention, or else needlessly tie up time being reviewed by the wrong team. I hope you understand. Back on-topic again, in 655505 you talked about Knoppix cheatcodes. In response, you were told how to blacklist modules. Did you try that? It seems the most fruitful line of inquiry here would be to close out this bug and reassign that one to the kernel, continuing to try to narrow down what it is about the kernel that hates your hardware. Beta2 preparation: proposed unblock for netcfg(?)
netcfg is a bit more tricky than other packages I proposed. testing has 1.81, unstable now has 1.89. Changes summary: * List available ESSIDs: I tested this change myself and...it's working as expected * Add logging to iface activation and deactivation: trivial change which is mostly aimed at helping further development, I guess * Rename cryptic killall.sh to kill-all-dhcp: admitedly cosmetic (shut-up lintian...). Tested by myself * Coding style cleanups: not sure it was appropriate at this stage of the release (OK, no more no less than my won cosmetic changes!)but seems safe * Cleanup link detection handling and improve logging: ditto * Avoid gateway reachability testing on s390(x) with a layer 3 qeth network device: as far as I understand, important for s390x * wireless.c: Fix some spelling mistakes: trivial and safe and of course, many l10n changes (most of them triggerred by the "List available ESSIDs" change by Sorina) signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#678421: lilo-installer: generate borken lilo.conf - missing initrd= param
Hi, On Thu, Jun 21, 2012 at 07:02:59PM +0400, Andrey Melnikov wrote: > In generated config after fresh install - missing initrd= line for kernel > image. consider use liloconfig form lilo package - it generate proper > config. > > PS: Add in template lba32 by default to avoid lilo warnings on each run. This bug is easy to reproduce. Just run the installer and install lilo instead of grub. The system will not boot. The problem is caused by this part of the lilo-installer postinst: if [ -e "/target${BOOT}/initrd.img" ]; then INITRD="initrd=${BOOT}/initrd.img" OLD_INITRD="${INITRD}.old" fi When this runs in the installer, both /target/initrd.img and /target/vmlinuz exist and are symlinks to the kernel and initrd: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 Aug 25 14:02 initrd.img -> /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-3-686-pae lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 Aug 25 14:02 vmlinuz -> boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-3-686-pae The vmlinuz link is a relative link, so it works in the installed system, but also in the installer (mounted on /target). The initrd.img link is an absolute link. This works in the installed system, but in the installer, the symlink is broken. The test [ -e "/target${BOOT}/initrd.img" ] which expands to (in my test, /boot was not separate) [ -e "/target/initrd.img" ] fails, because /target/initrd.img is a broken symlink. If the symlink would be relative, this problem should be solved. An alternative is to change te check from -e to -L (or check for both). Reviewing/unblocking udev/175-7
Hi Marco, reviewing udev's diff between testing and sid, I found those tiny things: 1. This one appears twice: + * Moved 60-persistent-input.rules back from udev-gtk-udeb to udev-udeb. +(Closes: #666223) I suspect a copy/paste failure, since 50-udev-default.rules was moved to, but not mentioned in the changelog? 2. You want to compress only source with that, right? + * Compress with xz. [debian/source/options] +compression=xz Otherwise you would need to add “-- -Zxz” at the end of the dh_builddeb line. Space savings wouldn't be too huge: kibi@kathleen:/tmp$ dcmd --deb ls -lh udev_175-[78]_amd64.changes -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 3.0K Aug 25 22:40 gir1.2-gudev-1.0_175-7_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 2.7K Aug 25 22:43 gir1.2-gudev-1.0_175-8_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 110K Aug 25 22:40 libgudev-1.0-0_175-7_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 108K Aug 25 22:43 libgudev-1.0-0_175-8_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 44K Aug 25 22:40 libgudev-1.0-dev_175-7_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 32K Aug 25 22:43 libgudev-1.0-dev_175-8_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 123K Aug 25 22:40 libudev0_175-7_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 120K Aug 25 22:43 libudev0_175-8_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 61K Aug 25 22:40 libudev-dev_175-7_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 47K Aug 25 22:43 libudev-dev_175-8_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 341K Aug 25 22:40 udev_175-7_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 kibi kibi 230K Aug 25 22:43 udev_175-8_amd64.deb 3. The libusb-dev epoch bump in build-depswasn't mentioned in the changelog. 4. Standards-Version was bumped with no mention in the changelog. 5. gir1.2-gudev-1.0's section was changed from libs to introspection with no mention in the changelog. 6. udev_conf_comments wasn't mentioned in the changelog. Even if changes which aren't mentioned in the changelog make it harder for us to review, this looks like a nice udev release to have in wheezy, so I've unblocked it. (I've also built d-i images and performed some tests with the new udebs.) As mentioned on IRC, 17x vs. 18y for wheezy is for another day… Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

d-i font switch support [Was: Debian Wheezy software speech installer missing the hungarian language]

I've given a try, it does work (try http://dept-info.labri.fr/~thibault/tmp/mini.iso ) with the attached patches: - setfont is actually already in kbd-udeb - I have cleaned the console-setup font list a bit, to only include what d-i can support, and added a switch script, to be called by ... - localechooser, which now accepts level 2 on bare linux console, provided that the font switch script is there. - it's then a matter of including the console-setup-linux-fonts-udeb package on speakup images. The additional size is simply the fonts and the script, about 7*2.5KiB, thus roughly 17.5KiB. The good thing is that the patch doesn't change the behavior for level1 languages, i.e. it should be bringing only additional behavior without touching the existing behavior. The bad thing is that of course, in the language question (before font switch), localized language names for non-latin1 languages appear as squares. That can not really be avoided anyway. This patch could actually be useful to BSD people, as they don't have bterm support: they could use font switch to support level2 languages in their text mode. I'm not sure how that is done however, it seems a screen map also has to be loaded. A vidcontrol-udeb would have to be introduced at least. Just a side note: + gunzip < "$FONT" > /tmp/font.psf + setfont /tmp/font.psf + rm /tmp/font.psf This is currently needed because setfont looks for gzip -d to unzip the font. setfont could be made to use gunzip instead, I'm not sure what I prefer to patch at this point. Unless somebody strongly feels that XZ binary packages are not > yet acceptable for udev then I will fix this in the next upload. As mentioned by Ansgar (who worked on xz compression in a lot of packages) on #d-r earlier: 23:36:21 [ ansgar] KiBi: Wouldn't switching to xz for priority: important packages break the (very uncommon) debootstrap on a system where no xz is available? 23:37:08 [ ansgar] I was avoiding those packages to not potentially break things for wheezy. So maybe postpone that until it's been discussed in depth? As can be seen in my first mail, there's not much to gain anyway. Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#685886: installation-reports: installing on the second hard disk fails: grub error after reboot
Package: installation-reports Severity: important Dear Maintainer, [ I'm reporting the problem on behalf of my friend. ] Tried 6.0.5 CD1 and the current testing snapshot (August 20). There were two hard drives (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb), Debian was installed to the logical partition of the second drive (something like /dev/sdb6), everything (except swap) was installed to a single partition. Everything was fine on the installation stage, but after the reboot the user was greeted with the Grub command line, i.e. boot failed. Apparently because the Grub was installed to the /dev/sda unconditionally. After we managed to install (manually, using the rescue disk) Grub to the MBR of second hard drive (i.e. 'grub-install /dev/sdb'), boot succeeded. This is unfortunate. I wonder if we did something wrong or installer should have some more code for handling multi-disk installations. -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-2-686-pae (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fi_FI.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#685885: libkmod2-udeb: Sound modules don't get autoloaded in d-i
Package: libkmod2-udeb Version: 9-1 Severity: important Hello, In the latest daily build of d-i, sound modules are not autoloaded, thus completely breaking software speech support and making it unusable by visually impaired people without a braille device. I guess this is due to the recent switch to kmod? The way I test it is (with an i386 image): kvm -cdrom mini.iso -soundhw ac97 and type s and the boot prompt. The beta1 images do get speech, the image from http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/i386/daily/netboot/gtk/mini.iso does not due to sound modules not being autoloaded. This is a well-known bug in the kernel, when trying to mount extended partitions (in this case in order to look for firmware). It is on the way of being fixed in the kernel...and anyway worked around in mountmedia, so should be fixed in beta2 Thanks for reporting. signature.asc Description: Digital signature --- End Message ---

My fault. That happened in the middle of a big bunch of changes to add all hunspell-* packages to language tasks. Very likely, I did the change adding Danish hunspell , then did not commit it (nor documented it in changelog by the way), then went to changes to the French tasksand both got committed at the same time. In short: that's part of bubulle's failures with git here or there... > - pushed 8882a17e2d8ce0767ea07fb0a86c70fecb7d08a9 to fix a few > typos. Amharic needs input methods just like some CJK languages. This patch was meant to replace obsoleted SCIM by another better supported input method. So, it's logical that the Amharic task gets changes as well (one has to know anyway that the support for Amharic is probably quite loosely tested since the beginning in Debian. Just like many languages, I sometimes wonder whether at least one native person in the world does test the installer in the said languages..:-)) I took Aron Xu's advice as authoritative on these input methods issues as I personnally know nothing about input methods..:-) signature.asc Description: Digital signature
