Very strongly agreed, if we could outright ban using dot directories in
packages for anything packaged (except dotfiles in people's ~, which
should generally not be something that the packaging cares about), I
think that would be a good idea.

Bug#672458: installation-reports: IPv6 privacy extensions should be enabled by default

2012-05-11 Thread a debian user
Package: installation-reports
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

I know that I can enable the IPv6 privacy extensions after the installation of
debian.

But I think it is important that I can enable the IPv6 privacy extensions for
the installation in the debian installer.

The problem is that debian sends my unique MAC-dress to some servers during and
after
the installation of debian if the privacy extensions are disabled.

So please include the feature to the debian installer that the debian installer
will ask
the user if he wants to enable the IPv6 privacy extensions.
If the user wants to build a server with the debian installer, he do not have
to enable the
IPv6 privacy extensions.

Yours faithfully,

your debian user

Which problem is that, specially?

Sigh, with this From address it is unlikely we'll have any answer..

I did try with mirrors.kernel.org, and this time it worked. :) My USB
was still in, but not my MP3 player. This is a slower DSL connection,
but doesn't the installer do a checksum against the packages it
downloads?

Bug#672520: syslinux-common: spins on boot, never shows the boot menu

2012-05-11 Thread Julien Cristau
Package: syslinux-common
Version: 2:4.05+dfsg-3
Severity: grave
Tags: d-i
Justification: renders package unusable

Steps to reproduce:
- in a d-i checkout, run "make -C build build_netboot"
- boot the resulting build/dest/netboot/mini.iso

With 2:4.05+dfsg-2 I get the expected boot menu. With -3 nothing
happens, with the CPU apparently spinning without making progress. This
badly affects the d-i dailies.

Cheers,
Julien

Bug#672523: please include "preserve /home" functionality

2012-05-11 Thread email . bug

Package: debian-installer

Downstream, I have found the possibility to do a clean re-install "over" an
exitising
installation very useful, and I think it may also be useful with debian.

For example, if you need to upgrade laptops that have rather small (thus
only a swap+root partition setup) and full harddisks to the next release.
(Especially if you will also need to change the desktop environment,
to maintain the uability. Then you can get rid of the old DE by only installing
the new one.)

The "preserve /home" functionallity has been used with ubuntu for
quite some time now.

The spec can be found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbiquityPreserveHome

And this even seems to suggest there might already exist debian-installer
patches:
https://wiki.edubuntu.org/komputes/HowToDebianInstallerPreserveHome

Interesting, so we are doing something funky during link detection to
trip this bug. The code which does it is in netcfg:

http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=d-i/netcfg.git;a=tree

Here's the relevant code from netcfg-common.c:

1277 debconf_capb(client, "progresscancel");
1278 debconf_subst(client, "netcfg/link_detect_progress", "interface",
if_name);
1279 debconf_progress_start(client, 0, 100, "netcfg/link_detect_progress");
1280 for (count = 0; count < link_waits; count++) {
1281 usleep(25);
1282 if (debconf_progress_set(client, 50 * count / link_waits) == 30) {
1283 /* User cancelled on us... bugger */
1284 rv = 0;
1285 break;
1286 }
1287 if (ethtool_lite(if_name) == 1) /* ethtool-lite's CONNECTED */ {
1288 if (gateway.s_addr && !is_wireless_iface(if_name)) {
1289 for (count = 0; count < gw_tries; count++) {
1290 if (di_exec_shell_log(arping) == 0)
1291 break;
1292 if (debconf_progress_set(client, 50 + 50 * count /
gw_tries) == 30)
1293 break;
1294 }
1295 }
1296 rv = 1;
1297 break;
1298 }
1299 debconf_progress_set(client, 100);
1300 }

Only two non-trivial things here: execution of ethtool_lite(if_name)
and invocation of arping. I would put my money on the former (defined
in ethtool_lite.c), because it uses low-level ioctls to query the
interface state.

You can test whether running it would trigger a failure on your
machine by downloading ethtool_lite.c and building it as a standalone
binary, the following commands appear to do the trick:

$ sudo apt-get build-dep netcfg
[...]
$ gcc -o ethtool-lite -DTEST ethtool-lite.c -ldebconfclient -ldebian-installer
$ sudo ./ethtool-lite eth0
ethtool-lite: eth0 is connected.
$

If that triggers a null pointer exception on your machine (try it both
with and without network brought up and check dmesg afterwards), we
will be in a very good position to report it upstream for fixing.

Best regards,

I'm less convinced. Debian is meant for being upgraded easily, so
dooing a "clean reinstall" is not really that a benefit. But, still,
why not?

I don't really see where this page suggests this. It gives a step by
step method, using the "manual partitioning" methodwhich I think
is logical for such purpose.

This is already possible with the current installer and there's
nothing to change. What exactly would you like to see changed?

Hi all,

I have the impression that this function was intrduced in the following
revision.

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/quantal/partman-target/quantal/revision/18

I attached the corresponding diff.

Have a nice day,
