Bug#638718: debootstrap: please add loopback configuration to /etc/network/interfaces
Package: debootstrap Version: 1.0.26+squeeze1 Severity: wishlist I'm filing this against debootstrap because the system was installed using debootstrap and /etc/network/interfaces isn't owned by any package, so my best guess is that the file was created by debootstrap. Feel free to reassign this ticket as appropriate. The default /etc/network/interfaces contains no configuration at all. However having the loopback interface up and running is important for many programs. Please add loopback configuration to the default /etc/network/interfaces like debian-installer does: === Begin === # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback === End === For chroots this doesn't hurt (/etc/init.d/ifupdown won't get called), but for "real" systems it's crucial. -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0.2 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages debootstrap depends on: ii wget 1.12-2.1 retrieves files from the web Versions of packages debootstrap recommends: ii gnupg 1.4.10-4 GNU privacy guard - a free PGP rep debootstrap suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Perversely, it contains two conflicting peices of code that try to create it. The version with just 2 comments is created by the preinst, while the postinst creates a version with 1 line of comment and a definition for lo. AFAICS, that code can never run as the preinst gets there first. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#634248: wontfix?
I think this is a wontfix, unless at some point in the future it becomes common for busybox to be built with xz support. Otherwise, for the small benefit of slightly smaller base debs, we will prevent people running debootstrap on the wide variety of embedded host systems, which could have severe detrimental effects in Debian. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#631087: debootstrap fails to unmount /proc from target
Ben, I don't understand your patch for this at all. The error message you showed is "umount: /proc: device is busy." How can umount -n avoid it trying to umount the wrong /proc? Also, portability is a concern. busybox umount does not support -n, for example. When I run debootstrap, it ends successfully with $chroot/proc not being mounted. Is there something about it being run by pbuilder that triggers this bug? -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Especially since I tried applying your patch and pbuilder --create still fails: I: mounting /proc filesystem mount: /proc already mounted or /var/cache/pbuilder/build//3625/proc busy mount: according to mtab, /proc is mounted on /proc As well, when I try -n by hand, it doesn't help: joey@gnu:~/tmp>mkdir proc joey@gnu:~/tmp>sudo mount -n -t proc proc proc joey@gnu:~/tmp>sudo umount -n `pwd`/proc umount: /proc: device is busy. Thanks, Arno Toell. * Search PATH for programs, rather than checking hardcoded locations. * Support using md5 and shaN programs, as found on FreeBSD, in addition to md5sum and shaNsum. * When FreeBSD (not kfreebsd) is the host, don't chroot to mount special filesystems. * When debootstrapping on FreeBSD, warn if necessary modules are not loaded. Thanks, Arno Toell. * Workaround for umount bug #634107, which broke pbuilder and "debootstrap ." Bug#631087: debootstrap fails to unmount /proc from target

The getmntdevbackward() function does: /* non-canonical names in mtab (this is BAD THING!) */ for (mc = mcprev->prev; mc && mc != mc0; mc = mc->prev) { char *cn = canonicalize(mc->m.mnt_fsname); int res = cn ? streq(cn, name) : 0; free(cn); if (res) return mc; } and now `pwd`/proc matches the 'proc' filesystem actually mounted at /proc! In the current version of util-linux (2.19.1-5) this appears to be done regardless of whether the -n option is used, as you found. > > > Also, portability is a concern. busybox umount does not support -n, > > > for example. > > > > > > When I run debootstrap, it ends successfully with $chroot/proc not being > > > mounted. Looks like it. But I think it would be better to be consistent about running mount and unmount inside or outside the chroot. Ben. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
