Bug#637289: installation-reports: Installation Debian Wheezy weekly-builds 08-08-2011 text=successful gui=not good

2011-08-10 Thread Luis Guzman
Package: installation-reports
Severity: important

Successful installation of Debian Wheezy/Testing on Dell D430 via USB flash
drive. Burnt the iso image to USB after reading the manual to use the command:
cat debian.iso > /dev/sdX.
Successful booting from USB stick and presented with all options: Install (via
text), Graphical Install, Advanced Options, Help, Install with Speech
Synthesizer. All menus where visible and the same was true for KDE, XFCE, LXDE
menus.
I initially tried to install via GUI but when presented with the interface, the
text was not shown.
All I saw were square boxes where text should be.

I switched to other terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F4 and this was the output:

debconf: cdebconf_gtk (process:471): Pango - WARNING: failed to choose a font,
expect ugly output. engine-type='PangoRenderFc', script='bengali'
**several lines of the same output followed except bengali was replaced with
the names of other languages.

Reboot and chose Installation text method, everything went smoothly. Ethernet
connection was picked up and setup correctly, partioning was simple enough,
ext4 filesystem as default, Installation completed and standard GNOME desktop
works out of the box. I just have to install a few packages for wireless to
work.

Installation reports (failure or success) should not be reported against
the "Work Needing and Prospective Packages" virtual package, but against
installation-reports.

Ah, thanks Gergely -- I'm still new to this :-)

-- Mike.

It can then be reassigned from there to the appropriate package, if
confirmed.

I have reassigned the report to installation-reports, so it gets
forwarded to the right place.

Current versions of do-upload should indeed push automatically. Is your
scripts/ directory up to date? Of course, it does rely on you having
done 'git add' on anything that changed.

Agreed, just go for unstable and (obviously) be responsive in case of
breakage. If you think the changes are sound, then there's no need to
be excessively timid at this point in the release cycle.

Guess I'll do that this evening, then. I fixed a bug yesterday evening
that had broken the none and noninteractive frontend ; but other than that
everything should be ok. I've actually been using it on my laptop for a
few weeks.

Bug#637284: Can't install wheezy on a 2011 iMac

2011-08-10 Thread Miguel Figueiredo
Hi,

Very recently Wheezy moved to kernel Linux 3.0, which is being used to install
and for the installed system.
It would be useful feedback if you test with the current kernel.
Can you test and report against such cd images [1] ?

Bug#629695:

2011-08-10 Thread Andrey Gursky
Hi!

Sorry I've discovered this bug report only recently. I'm dealing with
this failure since about 4-5 months. And I'm wondering what is the
purpose of weekly generated DVD-images when the distribution can't be
installed from them during the last 4-5 months?

How to reproduce this? It would be enough straightforward to install
that what has been generated on DVD-1 weekly image. I'm doing it every
week under VirtualBox. The saved logs (from integrated WEB server) are
attached.

Hope it could help to find out what's going wrong here. Or please
point me to the discussion on the structure of DVD-1 image
(debian-installer - tasksel - pkgsel ...).

Best regards,
Andrey

Bug#637298: broken cross-debootstraps (--foreign) with host=kfreebsd and target=linux

2011-08-10 Thread Robert Millan

While cross-deboostraping a linux-i386 chroot using kfreebsd-amd64 host:

/usr/sbin/debootstrap: 425: cannot create /tmp/test/test-dev-null: Invalid

Mmm, debootstrap should actually be an Arch:any package then. ATM,
if one uploads it from kfreebsd or hurd, Linux systems won't have
devices.tar.gz.

Yes it should IMO. Note however that my patch isn't a regression in this area.

Package: debootstrap
Version: 1.0.34
Severity: normal

User: debian-...@lists.debian.org

While cross-deboostraping a linux-i386 chroot using kfreebsd-amd64 host:

$ sudo debootstrap --foreign --arch=i386 squeeze /tmp/test
/usr/sbin/debootstrap: 425: cannot create /tmp/test/test-dev-null: Invalid
argument
E: Cannot install into target '/tmp/test' mounted with noexec or nodev

the problem here is that $ARCH stores the target architecture, but it is used
for tests where only the host architecture is relevant.

Please consider attached patch to fix the problem by adding a new variable,
$HOST_ARCH, for the host architecture.

Package: debootstrap
Version: 1.0.22

Hi.

The kfreebsd-amd64 kernel is capable of limited emulation of
(linux-)i386. I wanted to create chroot for test how limited it is.

debootstrap --foreign --arch=i386 etch /linux http://ftp.cz.debian.org/debian

It failed with:
/usr/share/debootstrap/functions: line 1175: /lenny/test-dev-null: Operation
not supported
E: Cannot install into target '/linux' mounted with noexec or nodev

It fails in the same way even iff --foreign is specified.

debootstrap --foreign --arch=i386 etch /linux http://ftp.cz.debian.org/debian

Please disable the check when --foreign is specified.

Bug#637340: partman-ext3: check for ext[23] /boot on Linkstation Mini too

Hi,

Attached is a patch to add a check for the Buffalo Linkstation Mini as
it's being supported by d-i. Linkstation LiveV3 might also be included
one day, but I can't test this as I don't have the hardware.

That's a special case of the general problem that there exist
Architecture: all packages which must be built on a subset of
architectures. I would rather not solve it by changing debootstrap to
Architecture: any, as it will be solved differently once ftpmaster
changes to throwaway-binary uploads; I spoke with Mark Hymers at DebConf
and he's aware of the general problem.

As I said some time ago in this thread, I don't have the original system
on my Mini anymore, and it's too much burden for me to install it back
just to test that, sorry.

Still, I “tested” this script by running it on my lsmini with Debian,
with busybox applets for mount/grep/sed, and it worked OK. I know this
isn't really a true /real/ conditions testing, but it looks “right
enough” to me.

Bug#637363: debootstrap 1.0.35 fails to accept --arch=amd64 on CentOS 5.6 system

2011-08-10 Thread Whit Blauvelt
Package: debootstrap
Version: 1.0.35

debootstrap was install per the manual install method in section "D.3.2.
Install debootstrap" of
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/apds03.html.en

The result:

# /usr/sbin/debootstrap --arch=amd64 squeeze /mnt/deb
/http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian
E: Couldn't work out current architecture

Removing the "=" makes no difference.

This is on an up-to-date CentOS 5.6 system:

# uname -a
Linux xxx.yyy.local 2.6.18-194.11.4.el5 #1 SMP Tue Sep 21 05:04:09 EDT 2010
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I suggest that debootstrap should accept the --arch specification rather
than try to "work out" what it is by whatever method. Or if its attempt to
"work out" the architecture fails, it should offer the user a chance to over
ride its failure and simply accept the architecture specified.

2011-08-10 Thread Whit Blauvelt
Package: debootstrap

Follow up on the report I just submitted.

> # /usr/sbin/debootstrap --arch=amd64 squeeze /mnt/deb
> /http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian
> E: Couldn't work out current architecture

Note that kludging the debootstrap script at line 402 as follows:

else
# error 1 WHATARCH "Couldn't work out current architecture"
ARCH="amd64"
fi

results in a successful install. This is not a system with dpkg installed.
(There is no convenient rpm of it in the CentOS 5.6 or RPMforge
repositories.) In any case the --arch=amd64 flag should be accepted, as the
help screen says of it "use if no dpkg."

That's spurious in my report because of not fully undoing my text editor's

Anyway, the bug occurred without the spurious "/". Sorry that confused the

--arch is the target architecture, not the current architecture. It
needs the latter to know how to deal with some details. debootstrap
should probably resort to uname in such case. It used to provide an arch
file providing the info but not any more at since 2005...
Actually all we seem to need nowadays is linux vs freebsd vs hurd, so
`uname` should be enough.

To be a full debconf replacement, a dpkg-preconfigure for cdebconf would
be nice.

We could get away without one, but then we'd lose grouping the debconf
questions at the start of the install or upgrade, and I feel that's a
useful debconf feature, really..

Package: debconf
Version: 1.5.17
Severity: wishlist

This is part of the long term mass bug filing for cross build support:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2007/11/msg00116.html

No patch this time, as I'm not sure how debconf would actually fit these
changes into the Debian package.

Emdebian is using cdebconf and removing perl from 'Essential' so there
is no place for debconf as-is. Unfortunately, cdebconf is not complete
when used alone; two problems exist.

1. cdebconf wants /usr/share/debconf/confmodule

2. cdebconf does not initialise the debconf template database.

Emdebian is working around this by creating a 'debconf-shell' package
that includes:
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 ./
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 ./usr/
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 ./usr/share/
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 ./usr/share/debconf/
-rw-r--r-- root/root 2577 ./usr/share/debconf/confmodule
-rwxr-xr-x root/root 1844 ./usr/share/debconf/demo
-rw-r--r-- root/root 5174 ./usr/share/debconf/demo.templates

Described as:
 Package: debconf-shell
 Source: debconf
 Version: 1.5.17em1
 Architecture: all
 Maintainer: Debconf Developers
 Installed-Size: 48
 Depends: cdebconf
 Section: devel
 Priority: extra
 Description: debconf confmodule shell library
This package contains the usr/share/debconf/confmodule shell
library to retrieve debconf values without perl.
  .
  It also bypasses the DEBCONF_USE_CDEBCONF
environment variable which can be problematic
  during installations.

(You can ignore the em1 suffix to the version string, that just helps
Emdebian separate our packages from Debian test builds from the same
source.)

Note that Emdebian does not use 'Essential:' at all and I have no
preference for whether this package should be essential - Emdebian will
throw away the 'Essential:' tag anyway. However, if this new package
were to become the home of /usr/share/debconf/confmodule in Debian
(as would probably be necessary), it would probably need the same
Priority etc. as debconf itself.

I am using this postinst for debconf-shell:
#!/bin/sh
set -e

if [ "$1" = configure ]; then
export DEBCONF_USE_CDEBCONF=true
# emdebian initialise database with demo templates.
/usr/lib/cdebconf/debconf-loadtemplate /usr/share/debconf/demo
/usr/share/debconf/demo.templates
fi

#DEBHELPER#

This works for us. (TM)
:-)

The demo template produces a bit of unwanted output so there may be a
smoother way of initialising the template database without output and
that would be useful.

I was also wondering if this could be a new *source* package as well as
a new binary because then Emdebian would not need to patch out 90% of
the existing debconf debian/* content to build debconf-shell. (why
cross-build perl to cross-build debconf when Emdebian won't be using
either perl or debconf?)

Alternatively, maybe these changes need to be migrated from debconf into
cdebconf? (One less package for me to cross build.)

Package: cdebconf
Version: 0.146
Severity: normal

perl debconf, in the "frontend" program, has complicated
probing that figures out the package whose postinst
script is being run, and loads the corresponding templates
file and runs the corresponding config script first. (Etc.)

cdebconf is missing all that ugliness. It is not needed in d-i,
because udpkg kindly loads the templates, and udebs don't have config
scripts. But, to replace perl debconf, all that nastiness needs
to be replicated in cdebconf.

Bug#637363: debootstrap 1.0.35 fails to accept --arch=amd64 on CentOS 5.6 system

2011-08-10 Thread Whit Blauvelt

Note in the default case (if I understand correctly now) debootstrap assumes
that the current architecture shown by dpkg is also the target architecture.
Why not also assume the reverse - that if the target architecture is
specified through --arch and the current architecture is not discovered, the
current architecture should be assumed the same as the target?

Also note "target" is an ambiguous term - the target in normal English is
the existing object which receives the new thing (as when the target is a
dartboard, and the new element introduced the dart), so the use of "target
architecture" in the --help screen misleads a number of people besides me -
as I see from Googling the error message.

Thanks,
Whit

There's no reason why we shouldn't just trust uname.

That is the meaning here: on which machine you will run the installed
debian system.

It's probably simply that nobody up to now reported the issue to get it
actually fixed...

Ah, but when debootstrap is being used to install Debian into a chroot then
the meaning of "target" can be mistaken to mean the architecture hosting the
chroot - the one which is running debootstrap in this case - rather than the
architecture to be used by Debian within the chroot.

That is, with a CentOS machine installing Debian to a chroot, the "target"
architecture can be misunderstood to be the CentOS architecture, rather than
the architecture of what you're throwing onto that target, which is Debian.

It can't be the "target" of debootstrap, since debootstrap is already
running in it. Think of it (the host, Centos) as the hand which is
holding the dart (debootstrap) to the target (the actual machine running
the just-installed Debian, which may or may not be Centos).

Once you've explained it, I understand your technical use of "target" to
mean what you mean by it. I'm only suggesting it is ambiguous, so that other
people may easily misunderstand it in the context of building in a chroot,
where the "target" may be misinterpreted to mean the host of the chroot.
Again, once you've clarified it, it's clear. But the term "target," without
the clarification, can confuse - as in "I'm going to throw Debian into a
chroot on this CentOS box.

Debian > | | chroot | |

Now, is the target named "CentOS," or named "chroot"? That's the ambiguity.
Googling the --arch error shows I'm not the only one to take the wrong fork
in the road of intrepretation there.

Best,
Whit

Ok, then cloning the bug.
