Sure, that's easy, especially since we need to prepare
the fix for udhcpc too... ;)

Actually I just forgot about this bug, will do today or
tomorrow.

12 CPU cores with Hyperthreading enabled (=24 virtual CPUs), 144GB RAM.

Some overflow when judging the available memory perhaps?

Can you tell if this happens too with the current daily images [1] ? or is it
restricted to Squeeze?

I didn't see it in logs, but this computer doesn't have 144GB RAM,

I used this hd-media kernel and initrd:

http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/amd64/20110726-00:16/hd-media/vmlinuz
http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/amd64/20110726-00:16/hd-media/initrd.gz

and this iso:

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/20110726-3/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-businesscard.iso

put them on an usb stick and boot the kernel and the initrd with grub
without passing any kernel parameters. isolinux have not been used for
startup

Bug#635400: 20110725 snapshot of testing is not installable using dvd1: missing grub-pc

I have a hypothesis (I can't prove it yet as I'm not very familiar with d-i):

I had another error message that I ignored at first:
``[!!] Configure the package manager
apt configuration problem
An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the CD failed
``

That's why d-i could not install grub-pc. Actual grub-pc_1.99-8
package was found at the DVD and I had no network during installation,
so it could not be fetched from the internet.

I'll try to check the reason of apt-cdrom failure this evening as I
can't deduce it from syslog. I would appreciate if someone familiar
with d-i looks at the syslog file, maybe the reason of apt-cdrom
failure is obvious.
umount failure after apt-setup-udeb looks quite innocent and I see no
other errors.

I don't think the IBM p520 I work with has any battery. :) I know the
RX5000 and RX1500 certainly don't which are the powerpc system I work
with most that run Debian (well kind of at least).

I don't know if I am subscribed to the powerpc list either (I am on
-boot though). I should go subscribe to powerpc.

Bug#629146: Not reproducable (bug #629146)

I think I understood the problem. Basically the ISOs now doesn't include the
stable symlink they used to have (being it stable or not). Now they provide
the symlink that reflects the suite they are: testing -> wheezy in this
case.

I fixed iso-scan to handle it (but couldn't test it locally); please check
if tomorrow's daily works for you.

It seems that it fails to unmount the DVD (I don't know why) but would be
nice if you could try to reproduce it again and pay attation to any detail
that might help us to reproduce it.

Comments/Problems:

All went well (thanks, Debian guys, y'all are great!) except the wireless
needed a bit of manual tweaking (wireline worked out of the box, no tweaking
needed).

Specifically, the Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 card needs some non-free
firmware and the newer 2.6.38 kernel from squeeze backports, as follows.

For the firmware,

http://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi
http://wiki.debian.org/iwlagn

emacs /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian squeeze main contrib non-free

aptitude update
aptitude install firmware-iwlwifi wireless-tools

And for the 2.6.38 kernel,

http://backports-master.debian.org/Instructions/

emacs /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main

aptitude update
aptitude -t squeeze-backports install linux-doc-2.6.38

We uploaded iso-scan (1.36) with a fix that might solve this issue. Please
give a try using tomorrow's daily.

Did you check current image? We got many issues fixed and would be nice to
do a new try. By the way, are you scanning for the ISO or booting it
directly?

I can easily reproduce it using virtualbox-ose 4.0.4-dfsg-1ubuntu4 on
ubuntu 11.04 host.

VirtualBox does not have access to the network, there is only one
host-only adapter (I use it to get syslog file).

I was able to workaround the problem in following way:

# chroot /target
# cd /dev
# ln -s sr0 scd0

I don't know why d-i hardcodes(?) scd0 device name, but there was no
such device.
I found it out while trying $(apt-cdrom ident) in the chroot.

Ok, it fixed apt problem I was prompted if I want to scan other CDs, I
had no other *.iso files, so I answered "no".
But grub-pc was not installed still, so..
 # again
# sed -i 's/# deb cdrom/deb cdrom/' /target/etc/apt/sources.list #
cdrom source was commented for some reason

And now testing is installed! yahoo!

Package: udev
Version: 160-1
Severity: important

I tried 4 or 5 different brands of flash drives all with the same result.
There are three partition setup on this flash drive.
sdb2 and sdb3 automount and work without any problems but
sbb1 will always attempt to mount as an ISOFS.
I'm guessing for some reason udev is assuming it's a U3 image?

Package: libdebian-installer
Severity: normal
User: codeh...@debian.org
Usertags: la-file-removal

To finish an old release goal from Squeeze, to comply with Policy
10.2 and to ease the introduction of MultiArch, I'm filing bugs
against packages which contain .la files which can be either removed
or stripped of the dependency_libs variable.

http://wiki.debian.org/ReleaseGoals/LAFileRemoval

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/04/msg00055.html

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/04/msg00199.html

Data has been obtained from the output of an automated script:

http://release.debian.org/~aba/la/current.txt

The output is best read in conjunction with the criteria from this
post to debian-devel:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2009/08/msg00808.html

To generate the list of packages, I've used:

grep -v depended-on current.txt |cut -d: -f1

The data is regularly updated but please accept my apologies if you
have made an upload which changes the situation since the data was
parsed.

libdebian-installer appears in this list as a source package because
one or more of the binary packages (usually -dev packages) contain
.la files.

In most cases, the .la file(s) can simply be removed as the process
behind this MBF has already identified that there are no further
dependencies using the .la file. In the unusual case that your
package uses libltdl directly, it is still necessary to empty the
dependency_libs part of all .la files remaining in the package. Once
libdebian-installer is fixed, the process will repeat and other
packages which you maintain may need to be fixed in turn. It is
important that packages are fixed in sequence to avoid FTBFS bugs.

If you believe that your package needs both the .la file and the
dependency_libs settings, please raise this on debian-devel for
clarification.

Bug#631314: [cowbuilder] --create fails when removing original tree

2011-07-27 Thread Otavio Salvador
reassign 631314 cowbuilder
thanks

Hello,

I reproduced this problem using cowbuilder at my machine and then started
trying to track it down. After checking debootstrap code it seemed it was
doing the right thing and thus I created two chroot (regular and buildd) and
removed them and all worked fine.

It does seem to be an issue with cowbuilder. Reassigning according.

Bug#498731: --foreign fails due to setup_devices

2011-07-27 Thread Samuel Thibault
I haven't yet managed to run the second stage on kfreebsd (I have built
an image that should work, I just don't know how to make kfreebsd start
debootstrap instead of /sbin/init). I have tried with Linux in the
meanwhile, it fails at the device creation step in the second stage:

E: no /debootstrap/devices.tar.gz. cannot create devices

This is indeed missing.

Bug#635657: Consider adding link to Debian Installation Guide in win32-loader.txt

2011-07-27 Thread Greg Farough
Package: win32-loader
Severity: wishlist

As win32-loader may be the first encounter many users have with Debian and its
installer, it may be beneficial to add a link to the Installation Guide in
win32-loader.txt so they may print it, etc.

This would be especially helpful for the network version (and sites like
Goodbye-Microsoft), since they don't display the install discs' usual web
browser welcome message.

Re: debconf and debconf/frontend

2011-07-27 Thread Regis Boudin
Hello again,

So, after some work, I have a couple of patches. However, I would very
much like some feedback on it before pushing them.

The first one reworks completely the frontend loading to be more robust,
and better handle situations where debconf/frontend is changed,
including not crashing if selecting one which is not available.

One side effect of this is that cdebconf can load the debconf templates
file without crashing. Therefore, all templates can be loaded and the
values from the debconf database be loaded. I have a very ugly local
script to do it, which will need more work to make sure it actually
handles all transition cases possible.

The second patch reads debconf/frontend which takes precedence over the
value in the config file. Debconf does it the other way around, but this
one sounds more sensible, so I'm not sure in which order to apply it.

Then there's the issue of the debconf/frontend values not being
compatible with cdebconf, but at least now they are simply ignored.

Obviously I'm very keen on my patches being reviewed before I push them,
as it's a rather intrusive change that I don't want to get wrong.

Regis

Subject: [PATCH 1/2] Rework frontend_new and frontend reloading
frontend_new() now tries to load modules according to
 the following precedence: * DEBIAN_FRONTEND
environment variable. * The value passed as command
line parameter. * The default frontend from the
configuration file. In case of failure to load, it
falls back to the next one.

Frontend reloading when modified is handled differently:
When debconf/frontent is set, DEBIAN_FRONTEND is set accordingly, to take
precedence over the value that was passed at the launch.
If loading and initialising the new module fails, reinitialise the previously
running one.
