Bug#625317: cdebconf: ftbfs with gcc-4.6 -Werror

2011-05-03 Thread Matthias Klose
Package: cdebconf
Version: 0.155
Severity: important
Tags: wheezy sid
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: ftbfs-gcc-4.6 ftbfs-werror

This package builds with -Werror, and GCC 4.6 triggers new warnings
which will make the package fail to build. Currently a Debian patch
just passes
-Wno-error=unused-but-set-variable and
-Wno-error=unused-but-set-parameter
to avoid build failures, but this patch will be reverted with the
GCC 4.6.1 release, and the severity of the report will be raised.

The full build log can be found at:
http://people.debian.org/~doko/tmp/werror/cdebconf_0.155_lsid64.buildlog
The last lines of the build log are at the end of this report.

[...]
  E: Couldn't configure pre-depend x11-common for libxft2, probably a
dependency cycle.

I could reproduce it outside piuparts. If debconf is not installed, and you try
to install cdebconf, you run into a problem:
cdebconf depends on libxft2
libxft2 pre-depends on x11-common
x11-common pre-depends on debconf | debconf-2.0

For some reason, apt doesn't understand that it can solve this by installing
first debconf, then x11-common, then cdebconf...

Bug#625215: keyboard-configuration: configuration not applied on Linux console

2011-05-03 Thread Cédric Boutillier
Hi Anton,

> I can confirm this with console-setup-mini but not with console-setup.
> Does the problem resolves if you remove the files
> /etc/console-setup/cached_*?

I removed the files and rebooted. Nothing changed: I still cannot switch
to the non-US layout, and none of the options have been taken into
account (compose key, etc.).

At reboot, I get an error message when the keymap and console are
supposed to be initialized:

Bad number of antecedents at /usr/bin/ckbcomp line 3078, line 372.

It is the same message if I remove the cached_* files and run setupcon
from the console.

Please tell me if I can test something else to help.

Best,

Cédric

Hi all,

As the issue happens to the installed system I am not sure this bug belongs to
the debian-installer.
If some light can be shed on this, would be great.

Severity: minor

debootstrap currently defaults to ftp.us.debian.org for the mirror.
This is not a particularly good default for anyone outside the US.

cdn.debian.net would be a better default, since it automatically
chooses the mirror closest to the user. Would it be possible to default
to that?

[PATCH] grub-installer: Handle disks with multi-letter names

2011-05-03 Thread Roland Dreier
On a system with more than 26 disks, after /dev/sda through /dev/sdz are
used, disks start to get names like /dev/sdaa, /dev/sdab, etc.
Unfortunately grub-installer doesn't cope with these names; the pattern
used to figure out how to compute disc_offered_devfs doesn't match
properly and so trying to install a system with the root FS on eg
/dev/sdaa fails when trying to install grub.

Fix this by extending the pattern used to match /dev/sdX and /dev/vdX to
handle the cases where X is two or three letters (I checked the kernel
source, and the sd and vd cases will only use up to three letters; the
IDE hd case only uses one letter).

cf https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer/+bug/776633
(I've only tested this with Ubuntu but the upstream grub-installer tree
pretty clearly has the same bug)

however, os-prober still does not see Ubuntu, but it does see Windoze:

Ok, the more I think about it, the more I'd find it useful to be able to
just drop a preseed file in a usb key along with kernel/initrd and be
able to use it.

hd-media doesn't fit because that means having a complete mirror of what
you want on the key (since it won't be able to install from a http
mirror) and you need to have the usb key plugged in for the whole
install (it's alway more practical to be able to just remove the key
once it has booted, and in cases like you have a lot of install running
in parallel it means you can just have once key for all of them).

Adding the preseed files to the initramfs means you have to rebuild it
each time the installed is updated or you change the preseed file, which
is a bit painful.

file-preseed udeb is just 24kb installed (3.8kb for the package, meaning
it compresses just fine in the initramfs) so I guess it's not too much
of a space problem.

All in all it's not a huge problem, there are workarounds, but it'd be
really convenient, imho.

Thanks for your work and consideration.

Regards,
