Bug#607417: ΑΠ: win32-loader: please offer a "Boot from network with gPXE" option
Le Wednesday 2 February 2011 14:26:25, vous avez écrit : > Hi, Hi Yannis and thanks for your extended review, > Vaggelis forgot to mention that in order to have the pxe functionality work > properly you must follow the 1-4 steps: > > 1)The linux, initrd.gz, pxe.lkrn (gpxe 1.0.0) files must be placed in the > root folder. I agree that pxe.lkrn has to be placed in the root folder. That's the point of the pxe.target to "depend" on pxe.lkrn. I will enhance the code when {g,i}PXE enters Debian in order to copy the pxe.lkrn directly (as is done for gl2dr and loadlin.exe). But I disagree with including linux and initrd.gz within the PXE patch, see below. > 2)The file debian/rules must have the PXE=yes option, instead > of STANDALONE=yes. … only if you want to build a Debian package out of it. Otherwise, just run "PXE=yes make" and you'll get a PXE-enabled win32-loader.exe. > 3)The Makefile must have: > > pxe.target: pxe.lkrn linux initrd.gz templates/ternary_choice.ini > > instead of > pxe.target: pxe.lkrn templates/ternary_choice.ini Same remark as 1), see below. > 4)The main.nsi should be patched with main.nsi.diff. (As a side remark, could you please use "diff -Naur" when providing diffs, it's way easier to patch back.) What your main.nsi.diff "patch" does is that it "embeds" a complete debian- installer linux kernel and initrd.gz (which makes it fail with kfreebsd…). The current win32-loader approach is to rely on Debian mirrors (and internet connectivity) to get the latest released debian-installer kernels and initrd's. Bundling a specific d-i version into a Windows executable defeats the fact that the current 0.6.22 win32-loader will be able to download _any_ future "stable" Debian-Installer. But I can acknowledge that bundling specific versions can be useful. Could you please report a bug (with wishlist severity) against win32-loader with a title like "Please add a d-i bundling possiblity" ? > Another issue to consider is that when a user installs win32loader in pxe > mode, description in boot menu isn't very clear ("continue with install > process"). I think that in pxe mode you should better change this message > to "Continue with network boot" in file l10n/win32-loader.sh (line 81) Same here; I plan to enhance the reboot messages shown by the Windows bootloader. It'd be nice if you could report a wishlist bug against win32-loader with a title like "Please enhance the reboot messages." > Yannis So, given the messages received so far and my present answer, I am pretty confident that the PXE patch does basically what you need; I will proceed in merging the pxe branch to "master". Other enhancements will certainly happen, but please report separate bugs (it's not a matter of blocking discussion, but to keep the "one problem is one bug" motto). Confirming everything that OdyX says. Awesome PXE integration, much more mature than our preliminary attempts. :) To compile, I did the following: git clone git://git.debian.org/d-i/win32-loader.git cd win32-loader git checkout -b pxe remotes/origin/pxe # remove "--format=i386-pc" from Makefile because I had an old grub version cp /usr/share/gpxe/gpxe.lkrn ./pxe.lkrn PXE=yes make Tested the resulting win32-loader.exe in a vbox XP installation, worked fine. The only thing that remains is the boot menu title, we'll file another bug for it once the pxe branch is merged to master. Bug#611839: non-free network drivers not really supported with netinstall of squeeze/rc2
Package: installation-reports I installed debian squeeze from netinstall rc2-cd on a Lenovo ThinkPad SL510. Both network interfaces (eth + wlan) are detected, but not supported due to non-free drivers. Setup provides the possibility to add the needed drivers using an usb-stick. Setup asked for the following files: eth: rtl8168d-1.fw wlan: iwlwifi-1000-1.ucode iwlwifi-1000-2.ucode iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode The files iwlwifi-1000-1.ucode and iwlwifi-1000-2.ucode don't exist, setup though asks for all three. So I copied the following files on the usb-stick: rtl8168d-1.fw iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode and I copied iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode to iwlwifi-1000-1.ucode and iwlwifi-1000-2.ucode The files are successfully copied to /lib/firmware, but the network interfaces still don't work. I finally finished the installation without a network, and installed the packages firmware-iwlwifi_0.28_all.deb and firmware-realtek_0.28_all.deb using the usb-stick after the first reboot. Bug#608025: [debian-installer] Windows 7 entry is not written to GRUB list
[Dear Miguel and others: Please do not merge this report, or others presenting a similar symptom, with any other bug report. There are multiple possible causes for each bug - I've fixed more than one myself in the past - and so each report must have its root cause analysed independently. Merging two bugs amounts to a statement that they have the same cause. While this may be true, we simply don't know yet, and if we merge them prematurely when there happen to be multiple problems then we will probably miss that fact.] On Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 09:03:55PM +, Paul Bryan Roberts wrote: > It looks like the os-prober found the Windows OS all right - the > installer dialog suggested this: > > Jan 1 13:57:27 20microsoft: result: /dev/sda1:Microsoft Windows 2000 > Professional:Windows:chain > Jan 1 15:22:29 20microsoft: result: /dev/sda1:Microsoft Windows 2000 > Professional:Windows:chain The syslog shows that os-prober detects it the first time grub-installer runs it (which is when it's installing the grub-pc package), like so: Jan 1 13:57:26 os-prober: debug: running /usr/lib/os-probes/50mounted-tests on /dev/sda1 Jan 1 13:57:26 kernel: [ 5258.526137] NTFS volume version 3.0. The first run of os-prober within grub-installer and the run of os-prober within finish-install both take place in the installer root filesystem. The second run of os-prober within grub-installer, the one which fails, takes place chrooted to the target system. That's overwhelmingly likely to be the problem here. os-prober-udeb and os-prober are at the same version here (1.42), so it's not a version skew problem. On the balance of probabilities, I suppose that this has something to do with the changes I made in os-prober 1.40, but I'm not currently sure what. Paul, could you describe your partitioning setup? In particular, did you tell the partitioner to mount /dev/sda1 anywhere? Re: 6.0 dedicated to Franz

In the end it seemed more fitting and a better precedent to more closely target the dedication to the work Frans did. So the first beta release of the Debian installer was dedicated to Frans Pop. http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/News/2010/20101030 -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature
GSoC: WPA support for the Debian installer?
Hi there, As you all know, there's no support for WPA in the Squeeze installer. This is a left over, with nobody having enough time to work on it, even though it seems to me (and many others) that this is an important feature that our users are expecting. As Debian is participating to GSoC, I thought that it would be a good idea to have a student working on this issue for Wheezy. The only issue is to find a mentor for it. I don't think I have the required skills to act as a good mentor on this topic, and I was wondering if one of the Debian installer team member / contributor would like to act as a mentor. As Ana told me, this is mandatory so that we can have a student working on it. I don't know it so much, but it seems to be a reachable goal for a mildly skilled student, right? Your thoughts? Any volunteer for mentoring? Thomas Goirand (zigo) P.S: The list of project is closing within a month, so we need to find a mentor for this before. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Try one of > the images with firmware included? Please don't look at the wlan (iwlwifi), since my focus was on ethernet. The main issue with the wlan is that setup requests 2 file, that don't exist anymore (iwlwifi-1000-1.ucode and iwlwifi-1000-2.ucode), even on http://intellinuxwireless.org/. As long as netinstall won't support WPA, I won't be able to use it. What do you mean with "images with firmware included"? There is only one netinstall not providing non-free firmware.
