Comments/Problems:

Because mass storage, i.e. missig storage space was the most limiting
factor to my computer experience, I baught a large Western Digital
Advanced Format harddrive and a Silicon Image SIL3112 PCI two-port SATA
RAID controller card. First I tried to take my existing
squeeze-installation and mirror it to a larger partition on the new
harddisk using debian-based clonezilla-live. It worked just fine:
clonezilla did what it is supposed to do, converting the ext3
filesystem from standard 512 K blocks to 4096 K blocks automatically
and resizing the partition. Then I installed grub 2 on the new disk
with grub-install and used grub-mkdevicemap to add the new device. In
the BIOS I placed ´Other Devices/SCSI-Device´ before the IDE-disk. Upon
that the operating system even booted once. The entries in /etc/fstab
for / and swap hat to be adjusted. When that was done I tried to use
update-grub and restart the system, but squeeze started from the old
HDD this time. I spent some time then trying to fix the issue and when
I was frustrated enough from the two harddisks exchanging their names
between sda and sdb and felt that my knowledge was insufficient to fix
the issue, I decided to reinstall once more. I used the default
settings to install into the same single 40 GB partition as before and
it went completely painlessly. The before mentioned SATA controller
works in a plug-and-play manner, also under lenny, and the required
mudules are loaded automatically at boot time, when it is added to the
system. When I booted into the new system now for the second time, I
found that once again sdb has become sda and vice versa. It does not
matter much because of UUID-notation in fstab and grub.cfg, but it is
confusing.

/etc/fstab looks like this:
.
..
# / was on /dev/sdb8 during installation
UUID=b1be8c3e-1803-4a47-8377-5f6b63b4910b /   ext3
errors=remount-ro 0   1 # swap was on /dev/sdb7 during installation
UUID=496a43b9-8d11-4819-b848-3c126981f52b noneswap
sw  0   0 ..
.

lenny:/mnt/sda8/boot/grub# cat device.map
(hd0)   /dev/disk/by-id/ata-HDS728080PLAT20_PFD2V3SES2SJ7H
(hd1)   /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD10EARS-22Y5B1_WD-WCAV5F547112

When I boot into stable release from the automatically generated new
grub entry, the IDE disk is still called hda, and the other one sda.

Bug#608130: [squeeze] [beta2] [i386] Installation report: d-i worked, X has problems with monitor detection

2010-12-28 Thread Miguel Figueiredo
Hi,

this bug seems to belong to Xorg.
Quoting Debian X Strike Force Team:

When reassigning bugs to X, we'd appreciate if you could:
 - reassign to the xorg package (without any version)
 - ask the submitter to run the X bugscript and attach its output:
 /usr/share/bug/xorg/script 3>/tmp/script.log
 - cc debia...@lists.debian.org

Can you do this?

Bug#608201: grub-installer: fails on live usb-hdd images (not on any other types)

2010-12-28 Thread Daniel Baumann
Package: grub-installer
Severity: serious

it appears that grub-installer is unable to find grub-common and grub-pc
when being installed from an live usb-hdd image.

i checked that /cdrom is correctly mounted, and the mediums content is
also correct.

it doesn't fail if the exact same image is not an usb-hdd image but an
iso or iso-hybrid image.

see the following thread for more information:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-live/2010/12/msg00113.html

Daniel

Comments/Problems:
the inclusion of Lilo in Debian is appreciated.
Tried Grub2, felt confused by its overly usage of modules and wiped
it!
Tried Grub-legacy which worked nice as expected but was attracted
by oldschool pure Lilo which works perfectly on /dev/sda with 750 GB.
I selected OFF all the tasks (desktop and standard) and did my
own selection of GNOME desktop with GDM, iceceasel, liferea
and OpenOffice.Org. Machine is used as a Desktop including
doing statistical/mathematical programming mostly in "R".
Connection to a debian NFS4-storage(Backup) and to a Linux-based
package filter/Firewall. Setup of X11 was bit hassle, the Philips
190B monitor was not detected properly, so i inserted in the
xorg.conf line for full resolution of 1280x1024. Hotplugging USB
works fine, Sound (alsa) works fine.
All works well, even the NVidia graphics adapter with Nvidia legacy
kmod.  Debian is GREAT.
Thanks a lot to all the debian developers,maintainers and supporters.

Hope you all enjoyed Christmas and wishing a happy new year with
Squeeze!

Bruno

Bug#608227: console-setup: XKBLAYOUT always get a "_" suffix

2010-12-28 Thread Sebastian Reichel
Package: console-setup
Version: 1.65
Severity: normal

Hi,

I get the following warning during boot:

WARNING: Can not find "de_" in "nokia_vndr/rx-51"

I fixed it by adding the following line in
/usr/bin/ckbcomp, after line 2540:

$consequent_values[$i] =~ s/_\)/\)/g;

Apart from this I get lots of messages about
unsupported keycodes (> 600 lines printed to the tty),
all starting with XF86.

# documentation on what to do after having modified this file.

# in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

XKBLAYOUT="de"
XKBRULES="evdev"

# If you don't want to use the XKB layout on the console, you can
# specify an alternative keymap. Make sure it will be accessible
# before /usr is mounted.
