I noticed your mail and was, at first glance, in agreement with your
proposal.

Are there any objections to a commit of Jérémie's patch?

i've found an earlier netinstall cd and that worked correctly. so i'll
check it out after the install.

d-i slowness on QNAP TS-209

2010-06-22 Thread Marcus Better
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I recently installed Debian on a QNAP TS-209 (armel). There were very long
delays, up to a few minutes, between some d-i screens, especially in partman
(see the original thread on debian-arm [1]).

I believe this was with the squeeze alpha1 version of d-i [2], or possibly a
snapshot. In any case it was suffering from #585733 and couldn't create any
ext4 partitions, so I restarted with the lenny installer instead. This did
not suffer from the long delays.

The setup was two 2 TB SATA drives, with LVM on top of md RAID1. The long
pauses occurred for example when:
*entering the RAID manager,
*after configuring a partition (mount point, file system etc) and returning
to the main partman screen,
*after confirming the partitioning setup, before the progress bar when it
creates the file systems.

Is this anything I should investigate more? Since I have now succeeded in
installing the machine, I am reluctant to reflash it with d-i again unless
it is really worthwhile.

Cheers,

Marcus

This is bug #583551 hopefully fixed in e2fsprogs in unstable, and
failing to enter testing for 16 days because of depending packages
(currently blocked by util-linux).

I see it too, and reported it as bug #586404 against udev-udeb. No
idea what the cause is.

If you know more about udev than me, you can try to figure out why
'udevadm settle' time out after 180 seconds.

DISCOUNTED - UK sales/marketing database - architects, engineers, contractors, builders etc.

2010-06-22 Thread Sarah White

Good afternoon,

I have compiled a list of over 90,000 UK builders, contractors,
architects, interior designers, developers and related
professionals. This is a great market for various
products/services.

The database consists of company names, mailing addresses,
contact names, phone and fax numbers and emails. The list can be
produced in any common format, such as Excel, mySQL database
file, CSV data file etc. Just let me know which one you would
prefer. This can be used it for direct mailing, email campaigns,
cold calling etc.

The list includes practically everyone ranging from professional
designers to decision makers of large corporations.

I am willing to share up to 10 copies of this list as I believe
it would be much better if this information were spread between
a small number of serious companies. If only a small number of
companies have access to this list they can expect a higher
success rate than if all their competitors were also in contac
with the list.

I am now selling the very last two copies for just £150 each.
I have already sold 8 copies for £250.

For your information I can send you a sample in Excel (say 100
contacts).

If you would like to get the list or need further information,
please get in touch by responding to this email. No cash upfront.

P.S. I expect to sell 2 copies within a few days so please
respond right away if you find an interest.

Kind regards,
Sarah White

Bug#586777: debian-installer: Only 1 DNS-Server asked in installer

Severity: important

Dear Installer Maintainers,

Just came about it (as preparing a reboot of our primary NS) and wondering
again. Why Debian is not asking for a second DNS server during install (unlike
RHEL)?
This results in only one inserted in /etc/resolv.conf on a lot of boxes at
customer side, as people tend to forget it later on.

Bug#586803: debian-installer: partitioner should create a "BIOS boot" partition when GPT is requested

2010-06-22 Thread Zack Weinberg
Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

When you use the new "GPT" partition table format, there is no gap
between the master boot record and the first partition for the boot
loader (e.g. GRUB) to install itself into. Therefore, when GPT format
is requested, the partitioner should create a "BIOS boot partition"
by default, so that the boot loader has somewhere to go. In directed
mode, it should just go ahead and do it; in expert mode it should perhaps
just notify the user that this partition will be needed on the boot disk.

If you don't have this partition on your boot disk, bootloader package
updates can render the system unbootable.

See http://grub.enbug.org/BIOS_Boot_Partition for further explanation.

Bug#586870: partman-base: use a system-specific default filesystem

2010-06-22 Thread Jeremie Koenig
Package: partman-base
Version: 141
Severity: normal
Usertags: gsoc2010
Tags: patch

Hello,

Currently the default filesystem is ext3 on all systems. However, Hurd
only supports ext2 and kFreeBSD requires ufs as its root filesystem.
The attached patch sets a system-specific default, provided none has
been preseeded.

An alternative approach would be to load a system-specific "pre-preseed"
file at the beginning of the installation, though I'm not sure what
other configuration items would need system-specific defaults.

My suggestion would be to use my patch as a first step and review the
situation when/if more system-specific defaults prove to be necessary.

Any thoughts? (or irrepressible urges to commit my patch? :-)

Thanks,

Bug#586871: partman-basicfilesystems: please include Hurd support

Hello,

partman-basicfilesystems needs a few special cases to work properly
on Hurd, namely:
  - no kernel modules are needed for ext2 and vfat;
  - only 4k blocks, 128 bytes inodes are supported by ext2fs;
  - the "errors=remount-ro" option is not supported.

See the attached patch.

Please don't send translations for partman-btrfs

2010-06-22 Thread Christian PERRIER
Translators who monitor packages that recently introduced debconf
templates may have noticed the appearance of partman-btrfs.

Please *don't* send translations for this package. It is developed in
the D-I SVN and will be included in D-I translation master
files.when it's ready.
