Supressing warning in debian-installer
Hi Debian-fans, I'd like to use the debian-installer to automatically install computers in the network of our institute. I modified a Squeeze-Netinst CD to fetch a preseed-script from an internal webserver. This works very well - however - some error message is displayed always (which requires the user to press [Return]) and it seems to be difficult getting rid of it: Boot loader configuration check needed The boot loader configuration for this system was not recognized. These settings in the configuration may need to be updated: * The root device ID passed as a kernel parameter; * The boot device ID used to install and update the boot loader. You should generally identify these devices by UUID or label. However, on MIPS systems the root device must be identified by name. I found the error message in linux-base's debconf template file and added this rule the the preseed-script: linux-base linux-base/disk-id-manual-boot-loader seen true Unfortunately this doesn't work. Automatic installation shows in tty4: preseed: error: Cannot find question for linux-base/disk-id-manual-boot-loader which seems to lead to main-menu[532]: INFO: Menu item 'bootstrap-base' succeeded but requested \ to be left unconfigured. What can I do to make the installation 100% non-interactive? pb with custom kernel (on pxe boot)
Hello I come from your site (http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/FAQ) and I have questions I would like elucidation. I have problem with supermicro server (X8DTL-i dual integrated network card type 82574L) with our old servers (with 2.6.24.2 or 2.6.26.8 bzImage kernel compiled under debian lenny) we didn't have problem with pxe boot or normal boot . But with the 82574L chipset we have to load kernel module (i.e /lib/modules/2.6.xx.xx/kernel/drivers/net/e1000e/e1000e.ko) when we boot on this kernel on pxe boot the network is not reachable I guess it's because of the e1000e driver module is not integrated into the kernel. do you know how we have to do to compile our bzImage kernel with 82574L driver inside ? an other solution would be to create a kernel witch allow to load module even on pxe boot all informations about this 2 solutions are welcome thank you in advance for your help this is the result of lspci -v command: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation QuickPath Architecture I/O Hub to ESI Port (rev 22) Subsystem: Super Micro Computer Inc Device 0006 Flags: fast devsel Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask+ 64bit- Queue=0/1 Enable- Capabilities: [90] Express Root Port (Slot-), MSI 00 Capabilities: [e0] Power Management version 3 Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting Capabilities: [150] Access Controls Capabilities: [160] Vendor Specific Information 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation QuickPath Architecture I/O Hub PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev 22) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode]) Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0 Bus: primary=00, secondary=01, subordinate=01, sec-latency=0 Capabilities: [40] Subsystem: Super Micro Computer Inc Device 0006 Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask+ 64bit- Queue=0/1 Enable+ Capabilities: [90] Express Root Port (Slot+), MSI 00 Capabilities: [e0] Power Management version 3 Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting Capabilities: [150] Access Controls Capabilities: [160] Vendor Specific Information Kernel driver in use: pcieport-driver 00:03.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation QuickPath Architecture I/O Hub PCI Express Root Port 3 (rev 22) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode]) Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0 Bus: primary=00, secondary=02, subordinate=02, sec-latency=0 Capabilities: [40] Subsystem: Super Micro Computer Inc Device 0006 Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask+ 64bit- Queue=0/1 Enable+ Capabilities: [90] Express Root Port (Slot+), MSI 00 Capabilities: [e0] Power Management version 3 Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting Capabilities: [150] Access Controls Capabilities: [160] Vendor Specific Information Kernel driver in use: pcieport-driver 00:07.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation QuickPath Architecture I/O Hub PCI Express Root Port 7 (rev 22) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode]) Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0 Bus: primary=00, secondary=03, subordinate=03, sec-latency=0 Memory behind bridge: fbb0-fbbf Prefetchable memory behind bridge: f8e0-f8ff Capabilities: [40] Subsystem: Super Micro Computer Inc Device 0006 Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask+ 64bit- Queue=0/1 Enable+ Capabilities: [90] Express Root Port (Slot+), MSI 00 Capabilities: [e0] Power Management version 3 Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting Capabilities: [150] Access Controls Capabilities: [160] Vendor Specific Information Kernel driver in use: pcieport-driver 00:09.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation QuickPath Architecture I/O Hub PCI Express Root Port 9 (rev 22) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode]) Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0 Bus: primary=00, secondary=04, subordinate=04, sec-latency=0 Capabilities: [40] Subsystem: Super Micro Computer Inc Device 0006 Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask+ 64bit- Queue=0/1 Enable+ Capabilities: [90] Express Root Port (Slot+), MSI 00 Capabilities: [e0] Power Management version 3 Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting Capabilities: [150] Access Controls Kernel driver in use: pcieport-driver 00:13.0 PIC: Intel Corporation QuickPath Architecture I/O Hub I/OxAPIC Interrupt Controller (rev 22) (prog-if 20 [IO(X)-APIC]) Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0 Memory at fec8a000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K] Capabilities: [6c] Power Management version 3 00:14.0 PIC: Intel Corporation QuickPath Architecture I/O Hub System Management Registers (rev 22) (prog-if 00 [8259]) Flags: fast devsel Capabilities: [40] Express Root Complex Integrate

The e1000e module is included in all kernels packages since Lenny. This kernels also needs an initramfs to boot. Shame, but > there's only so much stuff we can accommodate here. Anybody else have > an opinion here? Frans/Joey? The i386 netinst has also grown substantially. The base system probably needs cleaning as part of the final preparations for Squeeze. I suspect ATM 2 versions of Python get installed for example, and probably some (old) libs have a too high priority. But partly it's "normal" growth: the G-I initrds are still larger than for Lenny due to the switch to X.Org. The kernel packages are undoubtedly bigger again and the addition of firmware packages will not have helped either. Someone will have to do a detailed comparison between Lenny and Squeeze images to see where the changes are and whether some cleanup is possible. Possibly some udebs and/or packages can be excluded. All inclusion/exclusion lists should be reviewed in general. Beside the netinsts, all first CD and DVD images will need careful review of contents as well: are desktops installable using first images only (at least for i386 and amd64)? One option may be to drop PDF and text versions of the manual. But space will have to be reserved for the Release Notes. I will not be doing any work on any of this myself this release.
