Graphics glitches during installation and partman
Hi, Yesterday I installed a Dell Latitude E6500 computer with SSD and 1920x1200 resolution. I successfully installed gnome and it rebooted well. But there were some graphics artifacts during installation, I made photos of them, http://eugen.dedu.free.fr/di, see below. - The boot screen does not display correctly the background image, see first image (on the contrary, the blank line of the menu is ok, this is the fault of photo camera). - Choose "Choose language", afterwards "English", and come back: the menu item at the bottom contains weird characters, see second image. - the same after choosing English and Paris, see third image (bottom left and right) - the same for many other screens - I do not know what to choose on the next screen: Select a keyboard layout (PC-style or Do not configure keyboard). I have chosen "expert", but I think a brief sentence about what means PC-style (AT or PS-2 connector) is useful here. I choose Do not configure keyb and it worked - During creating partition (partman), it went instantly to 50%, afterwards nothing was printed for about 1 minute, afterwards 100% and the next menu item. I thought it will not work, maybe it is better (if possible) to make several graduations instead of 0, 50 and 100% Regards, -- Eugen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Hi, Thanks for the commit grant: I could take some time this morning to solve most of the low-hanging problems. I added myself to Uploaders, but I didn't add the DMUA field: I don't know the exact policy for it within debian-boot@ and I saw various ways of handling it: some sponsors want to put it themselves, some prefer the sponsoree to put it himself. If anybody at debian-boot@ considers my work trustful enough, I'll let him put the DMUA field for me. :-) In any case, I think that an upload can be done right now (fixes 6 bugs, including one RC). Re: get.debian.net installing gNewsomething instead of Debian
Paul Wise wrote: > > In any case, external sites are clearly the wrong place to put any > Windows-based installer for Debian. Hi, I just reworked the win32-loader packaging and the package will hopefully ship a win32-loader-standalone.exe, suitable for download from a website to get a direct install of Debian from and within Windows (what http://goodbye- microsoft.com did provide). It'd be great if this .exe could be shipped from a debian.[org, net] subdomain. Any idea on who should be contacted to "get this done" ? IMHO publicising this along the CDs as an alternate way to install Debian (aka on http://www.debian.org/distrib/ ) could be interesting. Problem preseeding disk selection in hd-media unattended installation.
Hi: I've a problem with a unattended hd-media installation preseeding. The preseed that I use works fine for net or CD installations (always is used in single-disk systems), and it takes the existing disk to part. Since in hd-media installation exist other disk, the installation asks for the disk to part. Using the name of the disk (sda for example) is not a good solution since those names are dependant of driver loading order. ¿Is any way to select the larger disk (or other similar solution), or i must "asume" the driver loading order? Thanks in advance: Jon PD; I've readed the manual, and the partman-auto-recipe and I couldn't find anything in this way. This is the partman part of the preseed: ** d-i partman-auto/init_automatically_partition \ select Guided - use entire disk # For example, to use the first SCSI/SATA hard disk: # d-i partman-auto/disk string /dev/hda # d-i partman-auto/disk string /dev/hdb # d-i partman-auto/disk string /dev/sda # d-i partman-auto/disk string /deb/sdb # Note: If you want to use whatever disk is available, no matter # what its device name, comment the line above out. This will only work if # the system only has one disk. # In addition, you'll need to specify the method to use. # The presently available methods are: "regular", "lvm" and "crypto" #d-i partman-auto/method string lvm d-i partman-auto/method string regular # If one of the disks that are going to be automatically partitioned # contains an old LVM configuration, the user will normally receive a # warning. On Thursday 22 April 2010, Ben DJ wrote: > Could you, perhaps, expound a bit more ? As I'd admitted up-front <-- > "Debain noob". I did not mean for you to use the 'BOOT_DEBUG=3' option. What I meant is that, when you get "dropped into the manual installer", to use the option to go to the main menu and then select the "Start a debug shell" option and then, using regular *nix commands, check the syslog and the network connection etc. to find out why the preseed file wasn't being loaded. But I've looked a bit more at your boot command and preseed file and what you are currently trying to do is never going to work. With what you have now the installer is not even getting close to the point where it would attempt to load the preseed file... You are expecting the installer to read a preseed file over a network connection before you have even configured the network connection. Your boot command does not contain any info needed to configure the network for the guest. The preseed file does, but that's useless as you already need to have the network configured to read it: classic chicken and egg problem. BTW, you'd have the same problem with NFS as that also requires the network to be set up before you can use it. Please study the documentation (preseeding appendix in the installation guide) and if you need additional help please try asking on the debian-user mailing list first. debian-boot is primarily a development list. workaround(?) for #578338: grub2 won't install
(Please Cc: me since I am not subscribed here) I reported #578338 on monday. I've found a way to work around it, and wonder if it would be an acceptable approach for debian-installer to take. If I switch to a shell during the partioning section and create the raid manually with --metadata=0 option to mdadm, then return and have the installer "Detect disks" again i'm able to complete installation including the grub2 installation. So, my question now is whether some sort of an option to "create md array for booting from" that used a 0.90 format superblock would make sense and be acceptable. -edrz -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Well, Frans is definitely what we could call a "senior" community member, you know. After all, he managed the Debian Installer release for about two years..:-). So, if such concept exists (it doesn't), I think he would qualify for it. > > As for "last contribution" ... same here. Debian's not worth it to me > if this is the reception. That's probably depending on the point of view. As I've pointed already, every contribution here is made on a volunteer basis and one cannot expect anyone to "hold hands" to users so that they can setup things that are supposed to be documented in our documentation. All of us have our priorities and we can't force anyone to make deep help to users as his|her priority. Neither Frans nor myself nor anyone else is paid for this and the support you get is done on the free time we want to spend on this issue (which is probably a different context from your own context while setting up your installation server...if I assume this is part of your paid work) You may very well find that this doc.umentation is not enoughbut we sort of expect you first try to get through it and look at what it says. I'm not myself a deep expert in preseeded installs (localization work is more of my business), but it seems that http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/apbs02.html#preseed-loading and http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/apbs04.html#preseed-network already have a few suggestions to solve out the chicken and egg problem mentioned by Frans in his contribution. You certainly need to preseed basic network configuration items such as IP address, netmask, etc, from the boot command line so that the network configuration step has enough to proceed and retrieve the preseed file through the given URL. Setting this should be the required minimum (so all these should be passed through the boot command line) # Static network configuration. #d-i netcfg/get_nameservers string 192.168.1.1 #d-i netcfg/get_ipaddress string 192.168.1.42 #d-i netcfg/get_netmask string 255.255.255.0 #d-i netcfg/get_gateway string 192.168.1.1 #d-i netcfg/confirm_static boolean true signature.asc Description: Digital signature

IMPORTANT: only the subset of UTF-8 that can be converted to NTLDR charset#. (e.g. cp437) should be used in this string. If you don't know which charset#. applies, limit yourself to ascii.#: win32-loader.sh:81msgid "Continue with install process"+#. translate:#. IMPORTANT: only the subset of UTF-8 that can be converted to NTLDR charset#. (e.g. cp437: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_page_437) should be used in this string.#. If you don't know which charset applies, limit yourself to ascii.#: win32-loader.sh:81msgid "Continue with install process"because it will save translators time, and avoid the situation where they give up and use non-cp437 characters because they don't have the time to chase this up. For example, none of the accented Vietnamese characters for the translation of this string are present in cp437, so my string would have been completely unreadable. The diagram and graphs on the Wikipedia page, as well as the Internationalization section, are particularly helpful.translated and submitted by:Clytie SiddallVietnamese Free-Software Translation Teamhttp://vnoss.net/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=projects:l10n vi.po Description: application/apple-msg-attachment --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: win32-loader Source-Version: 0.6.14 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of win32-loader, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: win32-loader_0.6.14.dsc to main/w/win32-loader/win32-loader_0.6.14.dsc win32-loader_0.6.14.tar.gz to main/w/win32-loader/win32-loader_0.6.14.tar.gz win32-loader_0.6.14_all.deb to main/w/win32-loader/win32-loader_0.6.14_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached.
