Thanks for the offer. I think that Romanian localization can benefit
from all good wills, either for D-I, or for other things. And, anyway,
translating is not enough and reviewing translations is also a good
thing to do.

Andrei Popescu also volunteered. I suggest you guys coordinate efforts

Eddy, I'm awaiting for your stance on all this.

Hi,

I managed to get this RC bug fixed (not a big deal). The debdiff is attached and
a compiled form is downloadable there:

http://alioth.debian.org/~odyx-guest/debian/unstable/win32-loader_0.6.13+nmu1.dsc

Please get this RC bug fixed: it keeps win32-loader out of squeeze.

By the way, the package is in some need of love (standards, lintian, [cdbs vs
dh], patches merging, etc.), which I'd be willing to give. debian-boot and
Robert Millan: what are your opinions ?

Cheers,

OdyX

Doesn't this need an addition in the installation manual appendix?

I'll commit that ASAP. I'd prefer Robert to upload, but without news,
I think that an NMU is perfectly safe.

From the activity I've seen on win32-loader last months, I think it
would be very welcomed and, unless we get strong objections from
Robert, I'd be ready to grant you commit access to D-I SVN so that you
can help.

I would even say it should be an option that's available during regular
installs, either at medium or low prio. And it should also be documented
in the "Using D-I" chapter of the manual.

You rarely ought to need to touch it and in this case it being available by
preseeding or low priority looks to be the sanest way to go.

In modern machine the default ought to be the most logical option and ought
to work fine (and even provide some performance benefit in some cases) so
this shouldn't be so easy to mess with it IMO.

so I'd welcome his addition to any projects, so that he get his hands

Bug#578338: Acknowledgement (debian-installer: grub-install fails to md0)

2010-04-20 Thread Eric Dantan Rzewnicki
Some further information on this ...

Today I tried a lenny install on the same system using the lenny
installer, but using the existing partition table and raid1 device
created during the previously reported failed squeeze installation.

I noticed that the partition table was a little odd. fdisk reported the
swap partitions I had created did not end on cylinder boundaries and the
lenny grub-install also failed. After going back within the installer to
delete and re-create the md device and partitions, lenny installation
was successful, including grub-install.

Seeing that, I decided to see if maybe the daily-image installer would
work with the partion tables created from within the lenny installer.

It did work fine.

So, it seems that something about the partitioner is broken with
respect to grub-pc.

I use manual partioning, not guided, in all cases.

Agreed. But I see no reason why this should be available through preseeding
only. This type of question is exactly why we have expert mode.

So it should not be asked at default priority and have a very clear
description.

IMO having at as a regular question at default prio with a good description
also allows to document the issue better (or at least, makes the
"documentation" more accessible).

Failed to install GRUB on Adaptec controller

2010-04-20 Thread Cristian
Hello guys,

I´m trying to install Debian on my server.

Some hardware descriptions:
- Inel Xeon processor
- 03:01.0 RAID bus controller: Adaptec (formerly DPT) SmartRAID V Controller
(rev 01)

There is configured by hardware one RAID 5 on four scsi disks of 73GB.

I tryed with Lenny and Squeeze versions and both presented the same error when
the install try to install grub:

main-menu[1250]: INFO: Falling back to the package description for auto-install
main-menu[1250]: INFO: Falling back to the package description for ai-choosers
main-menu[1250]: INFO: Menu item 'grub-installer' selected

main-menu[1250]: WARNING **: Configuring 'grub-installer' failed with error
code 1
main-menu[1250]: WARNING **: Menu item 'grub-installer' failed.

The disk partitioner find the array on /dev/i2o/hdax depending of my partition
table, I guess that my array should be
on /dev/sdax, my partition table is below:

/boot - primary partition 200MB (ext3) - flag boot on

LVM´s
/- lvm 30GB (ext3)
/var/log - lvm 20GB (ext3)
/var - lvm 150GB (ext3)
swap - lvm 2GB (linux swap)

This problem is in the kernel that don´t load by default i2o drivers?

PS: I installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 and it work fine, the grub was installed
with no problems.

Question: There is a bug with Debian installer when work with Adaptec
controllers? I´m looking for solutions but
I not found one yet.

Thanks for attention,

Cristian

I think we really should provide this functionality, I used it a few
times to install Debian, and now I cannot any more.

@d-boot: Am I right that the file win32-loader.exe from win32-loader is
all that is required to install Debian? Or does does it require
adjustments before it can be used?

@get.debian.net: Maybe you want to host the installer directly?

Or even better, this installation method could be added to
http://www.debian.org/distrib/?

Greetings,
Joachim

Hi,

the package description links to http://goodbye-microsoft.com/ which no
longer installs Debian. I think it would be more appropriate to point to
a location that offers a Debian installer.

Is there one?

Greetings,
Joachim

AFAIK, there is http://goodbye-microsoft.com/pub/debian.exe for now.

>From what I understood by looking at the package (to get its RC bug fixed),
the win32-loader.exe that lands in the package is the one that will get
included at the CD's root (to get "autorun.inf-launched" when the CD is put
in a box running Windows). If you try to launch the win32-loader.exe from
the package in a Windows host, it will fail (bug #464233).

My position is that src:win32-loader should build more than one package,
with various flavours: win32-loader-cd and win32-loader-standalone for
example - this would ease the setup of goodbye-microsoft.com-like hosts.

I am beginning to think that a "debian.exe" should be provided from a d.o
host. That might be alongside the CDs as an official way to install Debian
or from a different subdomain.

Cheers,

Ody

Bug#578593: ethernet card assumed

2010-04-20 Thread jidanni
Severity: wishlist
Package: installation-reports

Installation fails if one does not have a wired Ethernet card, even
though there may be perfectly working wireless cards that even connect
when using a 2003 version of Knoppix.

P.S., http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch04s03.html sends the
user in several unknown directions looking for the parts needed it mentions.
