Bug#538850: Clumsy cdrom-detect/retry template title

2009-07-27 Thread Chris Lamb
Package: cdrom-detect
Version: 1.31
Tags: patch
Severity: wishlist

The title of the cdrom-detect/retry template is a bit clumsy.

The phrase "try again to" works with a subject (eg. "X try again to do
Y") or with some other prefix (eg. "Do you wish to try again to Y"), but
not by itself.

I suggest:

The space usage is neglitable and I think it can be done with a very
small risk of regressions.

Be sure to use the kernel-wedge of lenny for building it since we've
changed kernel-wedge a lot during the 2.6.30 migration and it is not
suitable for the lenny usage.

Yes, you got the picture right.

should popcon be enabled by default?

2009-07-27 Thread Felix Zielcke
Hi,

on IRC I just asked why popcon defaults to no instead of yes.
Otavio at least said that it ought to be to yes, but Luca said that a no
would be better from a user POV
IMO it should default like Otavio also said it's more intersting for the
project.
What do others think about it?

The historic reasons are that:
- we don't want to have Debian systems "phone home" by default
- we don't want to enable something that causes periodic outgoing
  network traffic by default

The question is always displayed, so it's simply up to the user whether he
wants to participate or not.

This is the reason I think we could leave 'Yes' as the default answer.
It will still give the choice for the user and:

 - It will allow us to have a better view of users are using
 - We will be able to have it deplyed in more machines

I understand why it has been set to 'No' but maybe we ought to rethink it.

I see pro and cons for both ways; I'd be interested to hear the
opinion of more people about it.

That's normal when using a netinst as the base system packages included on
the CD are for a specific release.

The question is only asked for netboot installs and businesscard CDs.

It also increases the risk that users end up participating in popcon while
they'd really prefer not to. Questions in D-I always have, where
possible, a "safe" default; the safe value here is "no", not "yes".

Any participation in Debian should be conscious and voluntary, including
popcon.

I have the same problem with current daily amd64 and i386 with VMware

The graphical installer works fine, just not text mode.

Hi

The tasks gujurati-gnome-desktop and gujurati-kde-desktop both extend
gujurati-desktop which, does not exist.

gujarati-desktop does exist.

I don't know which is the correct spelling, but one must be wrong (from a

Also, there is no package called just guj[au]rati, and there is a test-lang
test on gujarati-desktop. I don't know if this is wrong too.

I'm a strong "No" voter; the arguments for "No" seem strong and solid to me,
whilst the arguments for "Yes" seem self-serving (they're benefits to
"Debian", not to the user) or just content-free ("deployed in more machines"
is only a benefit for malware authors).
