Given that your installation was a complete success, I do as
usual with reports for successful installations: I close the bug..:-)

This does not of course mean you weren't right to report. Knowing the
installations are correct is important for the d-i team.

Many thanks for your time testing the Debian Installer and reporting
your results. Have fun with your new Debian system!

Bug#502618: partman: /dev/mapper/vg0-home is apparently in use by the system

2008-10-18 Thread Marc Haber
Package: installation-reports
Severity: important

Trying to install lenny on a physical machine which has already one
Windows partition, using today's daily image.

Intended disk layout:

  │ LVM VG vg0, LV home - 40.0 GB Linux device-mapper (linear) │
  │ > #140.0 GB f ext3/home│
  │ LVM VG vg0, LV root - 499.1 MB Linux device-mapper (linear) │
  │ > #1 499.1 MB f ext3/│
  │ LVM VG vg0, LV swap1 - 2.0 GB Linux device-mapper (linear) │
  │ > #1 2.0 GB F swapswap │
  │ LVM VG vg0, LV usr - 6.0 GB Linux device-mapper (linear)│
  │ > #1 6.0 GB f ext3/usr │
  │ LVM VG vg0, LV var - 6.0 GB Linux device-mapper (linear)│
  │ > #1 6.0 GB f ext3/var │
  │ SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda) - 500.1 GB ATA ST3500630AS │
  │ > #1 primary 104.9 GB B ntfs │
  │ > #2 primary 197.4 MB F ext3/boot│
  │ > #3 primary 395.1 GB K lvm │

When saying "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk", the
installer says "The ext3 file system creation in partition #1 of LVM
VG vg0, LV home failed", and syslog says "Oct 18 11:45:27 partman:
/dev/mapper/vg0-home is apparently in use by the system; will not make
a filesystem here!".

# cat /proc/mounts
rootfs / rootfs rw 0 0
none /proc proc rw 0 0
none /sys sysfs rw 0 0
tmpfs /dev tmpfs rw,mode=755 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts rw,mode=600 0 0
/dev/hdb /cdrom iso9660 ro 0 0
#

partman and system log are attached.

I'll keep the system in this state until tonight and am available on
#debian-boot on OFTC.

Greetings
Marc

hotkey-setup seems not ready for mass consumption,
it recently added discover to it's dependency.

please remove it from the corresponding tasks.
Lenny should install fine everywhere and work *without* discover.

Hi,

currently the gnome-core package depends on rarian-compat |
scrollkeeper; however, because of the other dependencies, the default
lenny installation selects scrollkeeper by default.

As scrollkeeper is deprecated in favor of rarian-compat by upstream,
causes performance slowdowns and has a few annoying bugs, it would be
preferable to install rarian-compat by default.

Please add rarian-compat to the gnome-desktop task so that it is
selected by default.

Thanks,

I just discovered a small typo in the norwegian task, making it fail

Package is assigned `Task: french-kde-desktop' not `Task:

Severity is Important because this will prevent tasksel from installing
the package on a Welsh-language KDE system.

Hi,

 As Christian said at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=496723#22 ,
poppler-data is needed to view PDF files at CJK desktop environment.

Yes, it's categorized to non-free, but we don't have any other solution
for this issue (or if Adobe says "Okay, it's free to modify now").

So please accept to add poppler-data, ONLY for CJK Desktop environment.
 Thanks.

Please consider removing hotkey-setup from the laptop task. It's a fairly
simplistic implementation, in some cases based only on the manufacturer
of the system. AFAICT the definitions are now in most/all cases also
covered by HAL in a more fine-grained manner [1].

Recent updates to hotkey-setup all seem to have been to fix breakages it
caused. I don't see any changes to support new models.

IMO the generic cross-distro solution is much to be preferred over
something Debian-specific here. It seems to me that hotkey-setup was very
much needed for previous releases, but that general Linux desktop support
has overtaken it.

Cheers,
FJP

Please remove uswsusp from the laptop task. Installing this makes
suspend on many, mostly newer machines, break as it uses a whitelist of
supported machines.

However there may be machines which works better, because uswsusp
already known about certain workarounds, so I don't want to use the hard
way to unbreak this from the kernel via a conflict.

ttf-unfonts is now a transitional package for ttf-unfonts-core and
ttf-unfonts-extra. Please replace ttf-unfonts with ttf-unfonts-core.

Most desktop users will need ttf-unfonts-core only.

Dear tasksel maintainer,

A friend as a DD on IRC pointed out that there should be a lxde-desktop
task. So I created this for lxde-desktop task.

Hopefully it can be included in lenny.

Cheers,

Additional info from #d-boot:

[17:30:13] Zugschlus: I currently have the same problem as you
reported in bug #502618, has the installer also created partitions on
your lvm volumes on your system, so that /dev/mapper/vg0-homep1 exists?
[17:30:46] Zugschlus: that seems to be the reason why it's in use

Bug#502618: partman: /dev/mapper/vg0-home is apparently in use by the system

2008-10-18 Thread Jeroen Dekkers
I currently have the same problem. The reason the logical volume is in
use seems to be that when you finish partitioning and partman goes to
the stage of creating the filesystems, the system has suddenly created
partitions on top of the volumes. That means there is a
/dev/mapper/vg0-homep1, which uses /dev/mapper/vg0-home and makes it
impossible to create a filesystem there.

Regards,

Jeroen Dekkers

Bug#501446: Not possible to install KDE Desktop Envoriment via debian-installer

2008-10-18 Thread Mika Hanhijärvi
I think it should be possible to easily enter installer options like
"tasks=xfce-desktop" whitout confusing new users.

Etch installer did have boot-prompt on first main screen what you saw
when you booted from eg. netinst cd. It was possiblr to enter installer
options to that prompt. That was wery handy.

Now Lenny installer has nice new menu. In general I think it's wery nice
improvement, but... I just did have hard time finding how you can enter
those installer options to Lenny installer. I did not see boot prompt
anywhere and I was already ready to give up.

But then... I did go to installer help screen and it's there! There is
that boot-prompt. I don't think that's right place for it, it's not
obvious that you have to go to help screen. It's possible that
boot-prompt has always been there, but I have never used it from there
and I did not remember that it was there. It's many many years I have
even needed to use that help screen. So help screen was the last place
where I searched for the boot prompt. I think that this is a usability
problem.

I think it would be an good idea to add new boot prompt menu entry to
installer's menu in the Advanced options section. That new menu entry
could then allow user to enter installer options. You don't need to put
confusing boot prompt to main screen so new users don't need to see it
nesessarily. But I think it would be an good idea if boot prompt would
be accessible from the Advanced options menu section.

Bug#502652: installation guide: powerpc machines bootable from usb?

2008-10-18 Thread Holger Wansing
Package: installation-guide

In ../install-methods/boot-usb-files.xml there are
some parts for powerpc (...
or ...), but in conditions
powerpc is configured to be not bootable
from usb.
So the parts for powerpc are never visible ATM.

Kind regards
Holger

Yes, that's exactly the situation on my system. I tried installing
twice today, and in the first attempt it even showed the homep1 LV in
the partition list in the Installer. In the second attempt, it didn't,
but the homep1 LV was there when I looked in /dev/mapper.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#502446: Patch for Bug#502446: grub-installer is not updated for grub-pc introduction

2008-10-18 Thread Osamu Aoki
tags 502446 patch
thanks

Just get my point clear, I am submitting untested patch as reference.

Once tested to be good, it is technically trivial (but time consuming)
to add po files for most European languages and CJK as long as po files
are in UTF-8. So this will not make much regression.

My work on rescue scripts are pure guessing work (but simple one.)

Osamu
