At present this package seems to be in more or less a good state. I never had to maintain it so I don't know what it will require in long term but I suppose it shouldn't be a difficult task. The upstream doesn't issue new versions very often, the current version is from 17 Jan 2004. The Debian package applies several patches, most of them are very simple. Unfortunately I don't know which of them have been sent to the upstream and which have not. The package receives bug report very rarely, it doesn't require often uploads. At present it has 5 open bugs. I haven't checked if #399531 is really a bug, but if it is, it should be easy fo fix it. The other four bugs are agains the openvt utility (#190385, #190386, #190387 and #61559); they are very old (over 4 years and even over 7 years for one of them). I haven't talked to the upstream and I don't know how responsible he is. According to BTS one of the bugs against openvt has been forwarded to the upstream, the rest have not been. The package is hosted at alioth: http://alioth.debian.org/projects/pkg-kbd/ If you are going to be a comaintainer of kbd, then perhaps I should add you there as admin. The sources are on svn.debian.org: svn co 'svn+ssh://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/svn/pkg-kbd' Or anonymously: svn co 'svn://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-kbd' The current maintainer of kbd is 'Console utilities maintainers' with e-mail address pkg-kbd-develATlists.alioth.debian.org. This is a mailing list with only 4 members and about 10-15 spam messages per month recently. I don't know if it is possible to reduce the number of spam messages by changing the settings of the mailing list. rtc module hangs system - prevents new installation of Etch from fully booting
I have an old x86 system that fails to fully boot after a clean installation of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0. The cause is udevd (started from /etc/rcS.d/S03udev) attempting to load the rtc module, which hangs this particular system. To allow this system to fully boot it is necessary to blacklist the rtc module. (Once booted manually attempting to load the rtc module also hangs the system). My system comprises a Gigabyte GA-5AX motherboard with a AMD-K6 CPU. The kernel and modules are from package linux-image-2.6.18-4-486 as installed by the Etch installer. I've worked around this problem, but I expect someone new to Linux / Debian, trying Etch for the first time, would not have a very good first impression of Debian if they experienced the same problem and their newly installed system hung during boot. If anyone is interested in investigating / fixing this and would like me to provide more information, try things out, or would like access to the system then let me know. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I just thought that as I had a system where the current stable release of Debian won't boot on, that I had a good example of a serious stability issue - if anyone wanted to investigate it. Probably you are right and this is fixed in a later kernel, there are certainly lots of references to rtc in the kernel changelogs, however me upgrading my kernel does not help someone else installing Debian 4.0 on a system like mine. How do you suggest we improve Debian 4.0 so it boots ok on systems like mine? My thoughts were: Describe this problem in the Errata ; or Blacklist the rtc module in the udev package ; or Fix / remove the rtc module in the linux-image-2.6.18-4-486 package What do you think would be best? I never said it was fixed in a later kernel. I only said to check if it was fixed in a later kernel before filing a bug report upstream. If it _is_ fixed in a later kernel, we may be able to work with you to isolate the patch and backport that to current kernels, but that is up to the kernel team. However, IMO this issue looks so minor (i.e. affects so few users) that it is unlikely to be fixed in Etch because of the risk of regressions when introducing any patch. > How do you suggest we improve Debian 4.0 so it boots ok on systems like > mine? By following the route I suggested. Debian cannot fix this bug until the upstream developers have isolated it and provide a patch and may decide even then that it won't fix it. This means that you will probably have to work around it. The upstream kernel developers are best able to help you find the best workaround. Possibly some boot parameter can be used. > My thoughts were: > Describe this problem in the Errata ; or No, as this only affects an extremely small subclass of hardware we cannot even properly describe. Your report is the first I've seen for this issue. There are more common issues that are also not listed. _If_ the issue can be defined better and a decent workaround is available, we can reconsider this. > Blacklist the rtc module in the udev package ; or No, as it works for almost all systems. > Fix / remove the rtc module in the linux-image-2.6.18-4-486 package No, same reason. That is entirely expected as the Sarge kernel had very poor SATA support. Please install Etch instead. Cheers, FJP --- End Message ---
echoing to console during serial install...
All: I've created a custom install CD with a custom kernel that installs on several platforms... some with graphical consoles, others with serial. At the end of the install, I run a late_command script that prompts the user for some information relevant to my installs. On the platforms with graphics, I switch virtual terminals, echo the questions out to the display, read the input from the keyboard, then jump back to tty1 when I am done. This works great. On the serial console, however, I can't seem to find a way to clear the screen, echo the text, then jump back to the install. Is there any way that my script can get control of ttyS0, when the late_command is being executed? Please CC me, since I'm not subscribed to the list. Thanks, James -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Don't know the answer to your question, but why don't you just use debconf to ask your questions? You'd need to create a small udeb with the templates and a postinst that asks them (or even just a /usr/lib/finish-install.d script). You can fetch the udeb in an early command and install it using udpkg. Cheers, FJP pgpRK4zc00Grs.pgp Description: PGP signature

complex partitioning preseeding
I have just finished setting up a preseeded d-i for some servers at work, and I'm in general very impressed. One thing which I found missing was a way to do more complicated partitioning via preseeding. What we wanted was a 2 or 4 disk raid used as the PV for an LVM containing all the partitions, with /boot on a 2 disk raid. This is not currently possible with pure preseeding, so I wrote a udeb which replaces partman-base in the menu and runs a script in it's postinst to do all the partitioning, formatting and mounting etc. As a follow up to that I'd like to propose a more general way of doing this and would like comments on it. What I envisage is a udeb for a partitioner specifically for complicated preseeding. It would take an input similar to this: http://mjj29.matthew.ath.cx/custom-partition.txt I have written a short script illustrating how it might work (http://mjj29.matthew.ath.cx/partition) which reads a file of that name and prints the commands that would be needed to do the setup. I'd like comments on this approach, I'm happy to write at least a basic version of this, although I may need some help with all the debconf magic. A few notes about what I have at the moment: - it always assumes you are layering in the order partitions < raid < encryption < lvm < filesystems. While I'm fairly happy with this being correct for partitions, raid, lvm, and filesystems; encryption could be an exception. - there's no progress/error handling - partitioning needs to be handled, preferably in a platform-independent way - I haven't looked at password input for encryption - obviously it should trigger installs of the correct FS/MD/LVM/crypt packages Matt -- Matthew Johnson signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#425397: Bug #425397
Looking over this bug, it's starting to look like some kind of a race somehow only trggered by the one set of processors. The fact that multiple apt runs are hanging suggests that it is not caused by one single broken package. The only debugging step I can think of from here is install strace (anna-install strace-udeb) and strace one of the hanging dpkg-preconfigure processes. Simply attaching strace to it after it's hung may not be enough; you might need to modify /var/lib/dpkg/info/pkgsel.postinst: - in-target sh -c "$config tasksel --new-install --debconf-apt-progress='--from 5 --to $tasksel_end --logstderr'" || ret=$? + strace -o /tmp/strace.log -ff in-target sh -c "$config tasksel --new-install --debconf-apt-progress='--from 5 --to $tasksel_end --logstderr'" || ret=$? -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Specially not punishment in retaliation for other > punishment. Can't we all just forget and get along? Well, Debian has decided that it didn't want to forget and get along, but rather to punish in a neboulous one-sided way. And furthermore, it chose to side with those who acted in a non-decent way, which refused any tentative of peaceful resolution of this conflict, which chose the camp of hate and rejection. I am all for forgetting and getting along, but the other side didn't want this, and why should they, while they where sure to get the full support of the powerful in debian. Frans still has me banned from the debian-boot irc channel (even making a typo in his ban :), and Geert is still attacking me in a totally unprovoked way. This doesn't sound something which is encouraging to "forgetting and get along". Saddened, Sven Luther -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? d-i testing, qemu, images
If you don't normally read my blog, check this out: http://kitenet.net/~joey/blog/entry/new_d-i_lab_machine/ The test logs are as always, here: http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/test-logs.html Some of the failure for i386, amd64, mips* are real d-i issues, but I'm also dealing with some mirror problems ATM, so it'll be more accurate in a couple days. I've also just finished configuring it so that it uses qemu savevm before shutting down qemu after each test. This is especially handy for tests that failed, since you can run qemu on the same disk image again, and use 'loadvm 1' to restore the running d-i system that failed, and debug the problem. Without the bother of booting d-i and trying to reproduce it. If you don't think this is totally great, you've not wasted as much time debugging d-i as I have. :-) I want to again invite d-i developers to use this new machine if you need a fast machine to run qemu/kvm on for d-i testing or development, or if you want to get access to any of the disk images it saves of its test installs. Finally, if anyone can give me hints at booting d-i in an emulator in any of the arches I don't yet cover, that would be great. The digress test apparatus should work with any emulator that can output text. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature
