Bug#412677: debian-installer: infinite loop when misdetecting cd-rom
Package: debian-installer Severity: normal Hi, when installing into a vmware, I somehow managed to coax the installer into not recognizing the installation CD (full snapshot CD1 from 2007-02-26) any more. This brought the installer into an infinite loop where it kept asking for the disc again and again. This dialog should have an "Abort" button. I had to shell out to a different console and manually kill the cdrom method. Bug#412680: debian-installer: does not properly handle archive in case of key failure
Package: debian-installer Severity: normal I was today trying to install etch from debian-testing-i386-CD-1.iso dated 2007-02-26. Unfortunately, I chose a partially desynced mirror (ftp.de.d.o), and the installer failed on me silently. After choosing "install software" and completing tasksel, the installer stopped with a progress bar stalling at 5 % and hanging there. Inspecting the process list showed an idle aptitude process. I guess that the aptitude was hanging at the prompt "Untrusted packages could compromise your system's security". The installer should check and catch this condition and not hang indefinetely. Bug#411166: installation-reports: HP ProLiant BL465c G1
Frans Pop wrote: On Thursday 22 February 2007 13:46, Sven Coenye wrote: I tried reinstalling the server, but the installer picks up the remnants of the partitioning scheme even after writing a blank partition table to the disk. This leads the installer down a different path so I can't reproduce this one. If you delete the LVM headers on the partitions, you should be able to have a "fresh start". You can even use the installer for that: if you select manual partitioning there will be an option at the top to configure LVM and that has options to delete LVs and VGs. Even with that method, I could not reproduce the problem so the "fresh start" isn't as fresh as with a new server. Here's a step-by-step account of everything I selected on a new blade this morning: 1. Boot Debian Etch AMD64 Netinst CD through iLO2 2. Select standard installer with Enter 3. Installation language: english 4. Location: Other/Europe/Belgium 5. Keyboard layout: Belgian 6. Primary network interface: eth0 (Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5706S) 7. Installer finds the PXE DHCP server and configures but finds no default route (this is as expected.) 7a. Do not continue without a default route 7b. Configure network manually: (IP: 10.2.98.2/16, GW: 10.2.1.250, DNS: 10.2.30.1, hostname: intradb02, domain: henriserruysav.be) 8. Partitioning method: Guided - use entire disk and set up LVM 9. Select disk to partition: cciss/c0d0 (73GB Compaq Smart Array) 10. Partitioning scheme: separate /home, /usr, /var, and /tmp partitions 11. Write changes to disk and configure LVM? Yes 13. Select the partition inside the /home logical volume and delete it. 14. Create a new, smaller partition inside the space. This results in the rest becoming unusable. 15. Realize mistake, delete all other partitions. 16. Still wrong. Delete lvm logical partition. 17. End up with Free space all around, but VG and LV still visible. Note: At this point I realized that the "Configure the LVM" option is not on the menu (or if it is, its someplace I couldn't see on the iLO remote console). Once at this point, there is no way to rearrange the guided config. This is what is different between an out-of-the-box installation and even the "fresh start" reinstallation of the first server. 18. Create a new primary partition and assign it as LVM volume. Note: now the "Configure the LVM" option appears at the top of the menu. 19. Select Configure the Logical Volume Manager 20. ... partitioning scheme has to be written to disk: Yes ---> Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/cciss/c0d0p2 -- Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about any changes you made to /dev/cciss/c0d0p2 until you reboot -- so you shouldn't mount it or use it in any way before rebooting. Error!!! 20a. Select default option (Ignore) 21. 1 volume group found. Activate it? Yes. This reenters the partitioner with the erased partions resurrected. 21. Select "Configure the LVM" and erase all logical volumes. 22. Recreate the LVs with the desired sizes. 23. Create partitions inside the LVs 24. Write changes to disk Note: There's another bug here. I got a warning that I had forgotten to assign a mountpoint to one of the LVs. When one answers "Yes" to "Return to the partitioner?" the installer instead continues with the installation. This one can easily be reproduced each time the LVM partitioner is invoked and exited with an unmounted partition. 25. Select and configure network mirror 26. Select profiles to install 27. Install GRUB on master boot record?: Yes 28. Installation complete, rebooting in new system 29. On reboot, the boot process stops with the "Volume group intradb02" not found message and eventually falls into the repair console. So this sequence does exactly reproduce the condition of the first installation. I'm hoping this helps. I have a few more untouched blades, but we'll have to move them into production soon. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To provide more information about the nature of the problem I've tested also Ubuntu live desktop CD which seems to be able to boot on this same machine. Debian netinst CD-ROM is bootable on normal IBM PC clone. I think this indicates clearly that problem occurs only when Debian installation CD-ROM is used with Apple Macbook. -- Sami Laine @ GMail -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". HW: IBM X 3650 - Etch installer hangs during "dpkg-preconfigure --apt"
Hi there, For some reason installing etch via i386 netinst CD hangs on specific hardware: An IBM X 3650 http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/x/rack/x3650t/index.html during a/the "dpkg-preconfigure --apt" step. I tried both the daily from 20 Feb 2007 and RC1. As it installs fine on other HW, I believe it is not the "Key expiry breaks most etch RC1 images" problem. After selecting "no network mirror" and "Standard system" the main installer screen was saying (something like :D) "Select and install software"/"Retrieving 8 of 8" (the '8' varied depending on whether it was RC1 or the daily build). It hangs seemingly forever. While hanging, I hit ALT+2 and entered a busybox shell where I typed: # chroot /target # ps -ef --forest > processes # kill 27605 The "processes" file is attached (from the 20 Feb image). Process 27605 was the last in a chain of processes with root doing: /usr/bin/perl -w /usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure --apt After killing process 27605, the system seemed to finish fine and ask me to install grub and reboot, and I don't see any ill effects - but I don't like having to kill processes during the installation... Any idea why this happens? Any workaround? Can I provide more info that would be valuable? Correct, because you have _not_ deleted the LV and VG info that is physically on the disk by doing this. > Note: At this point I realized that the "Configure the LVM" option is > not on the menu (or if it is, its someplace I couldn't see on the iLO > remote console). It may be named slightly differently. You need to select that option and use the LVM setup menu to delete the LVs and VG. Doing that should really give you a clean starting position. We'll try to reproduce the other issues at some point, but as we're focussing on the next release at the moment this may take some time. etch install log
Hi everyone, I have tried today the netinstall CD: "Etch official snapshot i386 binary-1 20070227-09:54". I only get up to the install tasks and the system stops with this screen: | Select and install software | 5% | Please wait... Doesn't matter what I chose in the previous step (what tasks to install). I can change the terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F2) and check the system. It is not doing anything, just waiting... In the /var/log/syslog the last two lines are: Feb 27 15:52:10 in-target: Do you want to ignore this warning and proceed anyway? Feb 27 15:52:10 in-target: To continue, enter "Yes"; to abort, enter "No": About 300 lines above is just a list of packages to be installed. And the same list saying that the packages are not to be trusted because it was not possible to be authentificated. Since the boot loader was not installed I can't use the system. Any ideeas what to do? The error is reproduceable. It happend now three times in a row. Thank you, Ionel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#397973: Bug still present
tags 397973 + confirmed thanks I just confirmed that this bug is still present in today's d-i (daily built from the SVN, r45447). We booted the Xserve on the serial console, did the installation normally, and in partman created the RAID partition on a mac partition table. This failed to create the RAID flag, and thus partman-md failed to detect the disks, with the error message shown in earlier reports. Going into a shell, setting the flag by hand, and then going back to partitioning and it works fine, so maybe this could be added to the erratas. Notice again that there is absolutely nothing in reproducing this which needs powermac hardware to test, and i am sure that i can even be reproduced in quemu or vmware. You just need to chose a mac partition table, and you will face this bug. Friendly, Sven Luther -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#412723: yaboot-installer: yaboot sets wrong partition number in LVM/RAID situations.
Package: yaboot-installer Version: 1.1.9 Severity: critical Tags: d-i Justification: breaks the whole system When doing an LVM over RAID install on an apple XServe, we have three partitions : sd[ab]2 -> the yaboot partition, sd[ab]3 -> /boot and sd[ab]4 the LVM partition, which holds the root. But / is on a LVM device, and /boot on a RAID1 device, which yaboot knows how to read, since a RAID1 partition will be seen as a normal partition individually. The problem is due to the fact that our /boot is in /dev/md0, and that we want yaboot to look at the partitions containing this RAID1 partition, namely /dev/sd[ab]3. This leaves the system unbootable on a reboot, thus the severity of this bug report.
