SVN login problem

2006-10-13 Thread Tahir Abdul Rauf Butt
We are facing some problem while using SVN through our DEBIAN ubuntu Breezy, we are not getting logged in using SVN. Symptoms: 1)  firstly we are not even getting login through the firefox, when we open http://alioth.debian.org/account/login.php, and enter our user name and password, it gives us error that "alioth.debian.org is not found". even that using Microsoft Windows, it logins successfully but not through debian.    : we have also enabled cookies of the firefox browser            using   Edit -> Preferences. 2) The actual problem that we are facing regarding SVN is that while logging
 in through Terminal it gives us the Error that looks like the above (that was through Firefox browser). The error after the command --> ssh svn.debian.org -l mylogin-guest "mkdir .ssh ; chmod 700 .ssh"is "ssh: svn.debian.org: Temporary failure in name resolution"Now your little attention is required, Please tell us any clues regarding the resolution of this problem, or give us the proper place to query this problemSend instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

Looks like the server is/was just temporarily down.

I suggest that if the problem is still there, you contact the alioth
admins directly. They can be found on IRC (#alioth on OFTC) or reached by
filing a support request at:

Bug#392764: partman: [powerpc] RAID support is broken on powermac hardware (64bit, XServe G5)

2006-10-13 Thread Sven Luther
Package: partman
Version: 63
Severity: important

As the title says, an install on my XServe G5, with two brand new 320GB sata
disks, fails. I can manually setup the RAID partitions, but when i go into the
raid tool, it tells me something about the RAID flag not being found or
something.

This seems strange, as parted/mac has all the needed support for the RAID flag
:

static int
_rawpart_is_raid (MacRawPartition* raw_part)
{
if (strcmp (raw_part->type, "Linux_RAID") != 0)
return 0;
return 1;
}
static int
mac_partition_set_flag (PedPartition* part, PedPartitionFlag flag, int state)
{
...
case PED_PARTITION_RAID:
mac_data->is_raid = state;
if (state)
strcpy (mac_data->system_name, "Linux_RAID");
else
mac_partition_set_system (part, part->fs_type);
return 1;
...
static int
mac_partition_get_flag (const PedPartition* part, PedPartitionFlag flag)
{
...
case PED_PARTITION_RAID:
return mac_data->is_raid;
static int
mac_partition_is_flag_available (
const PedPartition* part, PedPartitionFlag flag)
{
...
case PED_PARTITION_RAID:

Since this is consistently ok, i suppose there is some kind of brokeness in
the partman support.

If needed, i can provide full logs.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

Doing an install on an apple Xserve G5, using the LVM automatic partitioning,
fails to create a apple_bootstrap partition for the apple bootloader.

[G-I] testresults using new gtk2-engines udeb

2006-10-13 Thread Frans Pop
I have just tested the image created yesterday by Davide. The installer
looks very nice, it solves the bug where the selected item in multiselect
lists is not displayed and I've seen no regressions.

There is one minor issue. VT1 gets flooded with two messages:
* Repeated a lot:
  (debconf: ): Gdk-DirectFB-WARNING **: gdk_directfb_gc_set_dashes not
implemented
* Repeated a lot while progress bar is running:
  Gdk_DirectFB-Message: filled polygons with n > 3 are not yet supported,
drawing outlines

Seems like the engine uses some "advanced" features that are not supported
by gdk-directfb, though it does seem to cleanly fall back to alternatives.
I'd like to prevent the flooding of VT1 though; would it be possible to
suppress these warnings?

I have one question: how will implementing this clearlooks engine affect
implementing the bladr and "dark" theme? I'd like to avoid implementing
several different themes/engines for Etch and instead stick to only:
- one default theme
- the dark theme (or rather one theme for visually impaired people)

Cheers,
FJP

OK. I'll reply to the open bug reports to let relevant people know.

The basic principle is already implemented. We'll see what needs to be
tweaked when I get new patches for implementing the themes, but I doubt
it will be anything significant.

Re: [G-I] testresults using new gtk2-engines udeb

2006-10-13 Thread Attilio Fiandrotti

Frans Pop wrote:

I have just tested the image created yesterday by Davide. The installer
looks very nice, it solves the bug where the selected item in multiselect
lists is not displayed and I've seen no regressions.

There is one minor issue. VT1 gets flooded with two messages:
* Repeated a lot:

That's because filled polygon with more than 3 edges drawing is not
currently supported: a patch for this exists, but wasn't committed yet
AFAIK [1].
To prevent VT1 pollution, such warnings could be simply silenced (see
attached patch).

I have one question: how will implementing this clearlooks engine affect
implementing the bladr and "dark" theme? I'd like to avoid implementing
several different themes/engines for Etch and instead stick to only:
- one default theme
- the dark theme (or rather one theme for visually impaired people)

AFAIK, Bladr and the dark theme are no longer needed / applicable, as
they use the libpixmap engine, not clearlooks, and should not be
packaged in the g-i.
IIRC, loic has also packages the h(igh)c(ontrast)engine engine, which
should be ok to implement accessibility.
We may need tweak something in rootskel-gtk to allow GTK theme choose at
boot time.

cheers

Attilio

 gdk_directfb_gc_set_dashes() and filled polygons with n > 3 aren't
 implemented in Gtk 2.10.6 either, so a backport wouldn't help. I'm
 afraid that use of these functions would have to be changed in the
 Clearlooks engine and we would have to change the build to apply
 different patches to the directfb build; this would be relatively hard.
   I'm afraid that warnings are always printed by default, I couldn't
 find a way to turn them off without adding a special log handler. :-/
 (The relevant code is in glib/gmessages.c in glib2.0, and the doc is
 at .)

 You definitely want a theme for visually impaired people, I've added
 libhcengine.so the gtk2-engines udeb, which enhances the look ot the
 High Constrast theme. It seems to reference
 /usr/share/themes/HighContrastLargePrint/pixmaps, but
 /usr/share/themes/HighContrast/gtk-2.0/gtkrc is probaly the bulk of the
 theme, and it would be a good start to try using this gtkrc.

 (Please let me know ahead of time if you need a gnome-themes udeb as
 well, but it would be easier to grab a copy from the relevant files
 and ship them in rootskel for now.)

 I didn't look into the Bladr theme.

 I'm not sure how you'll switch theme when someone wants the
 accessibility mode of the installer, do you have a solution for this
 already? Will you generate a gtkrc in /etc?

 These warnings are likely to go away with gtk2-engines 2.8, since some
 parts of the engine where gdk_gc_set_dashes() and gdk_region_polygon()
 appear were rewritten to be based on Cairo instead.

 I'll forward port the udeb to 2.8 which we considered for etch anyway.

 (Actually, the only blocker for gtk2-engines in etch so far is
 precisely the rewrite to Cairo of some engines which exposed some
 glitches in particular combinations of Cairo based engines + Xorg
 architecture (EXA/XAA) + ATI driver, and it seems there's a patch
 upstream for the ati driver.)

These warnings use g_warning and g_message, which cannot be deactivated
at runtime. We can still patch the source to remove these warnings, but
it's kind of ugly.

The udeb also includes the hcengine.so engine, so that you can ship a
dark theme using this engine as well. Once the engine is available,
shipping one of the gtkrc files from gnome-accessibility-themes should
be enough.

OK. If there is no acceptable way to turn them off, I guess we'll have to
live with them. It's mostly that I'd like to avoid unnecessary BRs from
users who see the errors and also give really meaningful errors a chance
of actually being seen...

Let's see if your backporting attempts bring something.

BTW, are these messages also written to a logfile somewhere?

Yes, shipping them in rootskel-gtk is what we were planning to do.

We already have an implementation for that. Basic trigger is passing
"theme=" at the boot prompt.

 Understood. The clean way would to turn them off conditionally, for
 example only for g-i. Sample possible ways:
 - gtk/dfb:
   . build gtk one more time for g-i (curently, the directfb build is used
 both for regular *.debs and for the udeb)
   . add a buildtime condition in a patch for gtk which only affects the
 g-i build
 - gtk/dfb + g-i:
   . add a runtime condition in a patch for gtk which turns off warnings
 when a certain condition is met (environment var, file...)
   . meet that condition in g-i
 - gtk2-engines:
   . add a buildtime condition in a patch for gtk2-engines which only
 affects the g-i build
   . add a log handler to filter out these events in the patch

 But let us explore the backport of gtk2-engines 2.8 first. :-P

> BTW, are these messages also written to a logfile somewhere?

 No.

Tested with backported package from:

With this the warning messages have disappeared and the progress bar looks
a lot nicer.

Thanks Loïc!

OK. Cool.
Just checked and the patch for a theme for visually impaired people that
Denis Barbier prepared actually already uses HC, so no problem there.

So we just need a replacement for the bladr-based theme requested in
#390435.

We added /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libpixmap.so in
libgtk-directfb-2.0-0-udeb to support the bladr theme. If we actually
drop bladr and go with clearlooks for the default theme, and the
libpixmap lib is not needed for that, it'd be nice if we could drop it
again from the udeb. No real rush though.

Turns out that there is a much simpler way to activate the Clearlooks
engine than using:
include "/usr/share/themes/Clearlooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"

And that is (of course...):
gtk-theme-name = "Clearlooks"

This also means that if we want to customize this theme (e.g. make it red
instead of blue), we either need to _not_ include the Clearlooks gtkrc
file in gtk2-engines-udeb, or we need to provide Loïc with the version
we'd want to use.

My personal preference would be to, at least for now, drop it from the
udeb and include it in rootskel-gtk ourselves as that gives the greater
flexibility (it is much easier to upload and push rootskel-gtk than a
Gnome team package).
We can always move it back once the theme is mature for our needs.

I'd also like to clean up the theme file by using tabs instead of spaces
everywhere as that saves some valuable memory.

archive.progeny.com going down?

2006-10-13 Thread Joey Hess
James Troup told me that you'd told him that archive.progeny.com might
be decomissioned within the next 8 (now 4) weeks. Is that going to
happen? This comes at a tricky point in the release schedule for us for
such a major mirror to go away; it would be best if we can act on this
immediatly and stop the installer from using that mirror this week if
it's going to stop working, before our next release of the installer.

Note that archive.progeny.com also doesn't seem to have updated its
Debian mirror since the 11th, or maybe the 8th.

Bug#390435: Please, include GTK theme Bladr into rootskel-gtk

2006-10-13 Thread Frans Pop
Hello Luca,

Not sure if you've already seen the discussion, but it looks like we are
not going to be able to include the bladr based theme in the graphical
installer.

Reason is that we had an important issue where selected lines in selection
lists would disappear, and it turns out that we can work around that by
using the Clearlooks engine (#385026).

It probably makes no sense to use a bladr based theme with the Clearlooks
engine, but it is probably possible to achieve roughly the same overall
style as with bladr (using similar coloring, icons etc.).

If you're interested in working on this, I suggest you talk with Attilio
about what the options are.

See also this thread on the d-boot mailing list:

[D-I] Prepraration for RC1 - string freeze now in effect

2006-10-13 Thread Frans Pop
Hi folks,

As announced earlier, the string freeze for Debian Installer (level 1) is
now in effect. We are sorry that we've had to make a few late changes in
strings, but all have added important new functionality which we really
wanted to include in RC1.

The end date for translation updates is still: Sun 22 Okt, 00:00 UTC.
   ^
After that, all pending translation updates will be uploaded and we will
start building RC1.

Note that the recent changes for partman concern strings that are seen by
*all* users in *every* installation [1]!
So please make sure that you update your translations for those strings!

After RC1 is released, we will ask you to _test_ the installer in your
language. This is important because you often see errors or
inconsistencies or strings that are too long and thus broken off only
when you actually run an installation. It is also important because it
allows you to check that the general setup is correct for your
language/country (keyboard, locale, installed wordlists, etc.).

Also another reminder to check that there are no important (technical)
errors in your translations, using the overview on:
http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/spellcheck/level1/index.html
Please make sure you check this page the next day after you commit changes
in your translations.

Good luck,
FJP

[1] Except when preseeding is used to automate the installation.

http://people.debian.org/~wouter/d-i/powerpc-miboot/2006-10-13/build_powerpc_floppy_net-drivers.log
says indeed only:

I would expect more output from a good build.

Would adding a `make clean` help?

The package information of modutils says:
Description: Linux module utilities
 These utilities are intended to make a Linux modular 2.2 or 2.4
 kernel manageable for all users, administrators and distribution
 maintainers. For 2.6 kernels, you should use the module-init-tools
 package.

So it does make sense to remove the modutils package now that d-i use 2.6

I doubt this is specific to LVM. LVM uses exactly the same partition
layout as regular auto partitioning.

Please check that the get_recipedir function in /lib/partman/recipes.sh
selects an appropriate set of recipes for that box. You can debug this by
a adding a line 'set -x' in /lib/partman/auto-lvm_tools.sh.

If not, patch welcome.

Well, it gives an idea, i had rebooted and am using the box for something else
right now, but i am investigating creating the array by hand on the running
system, after creating the partitions by hand with command line parted, to
make sure it is indeed something related to this.

That said, it is the message at the end of the raid creation process, can you
tell me where it may be, so i can investigate it myself ?

No, because i don't get this message when doing a normal automated partitioning.
I checked to be sure before sending the bug report. I made sure to dd the
first 1024 blocks of both disks in both cases.
I also wondered, and i looked into partman-auto-lvm, but couldn't find any trace
of the recipes, and was not sure if it was using the mac recipes or not.

I can't reboot the box right now, can you tell me where the recipes are
selected, so i can look at the code ?

As usual, but first i need to find the bug and create the patch in question.

So would I, but I am not going to block the d-i RC1 release by switching
to 2.6.18 before it is ready to migrate to testing. There is currently at
least one RC bug open that will prevent that and I've seen various other
issues flash by over the past week that looked to me like regressions or
important issues (though maybe not RC).

So, it is too early to start switching lkdi packages. But if in the mean
time you can do anything to help get the kernel packages into shape...

So, I'll wait until we hear from the kernel team release coordinator (or
whatever Frederik likes to call himself these days) that 2.6.18 is ready
for testing. I will then check with RM if that is OK with them as well
and only then consider when to make the switch for d-i.
The sooner the better and if soon enough we can still use 2.6.18 for RC1.

Cheers,
FJP

 I've uploaded gtk2-engines 1:2.8.1-3 to unstable, and dropped the
 gtkrc; you should now include it in rootskel.

See above. To repeat myself:
PARTMAN-AUTO-LVM USES THE EXACT SAME RECIPES AS USED IN PARTMAN-AUTO!!!

recipes.sh is part of partman-auto.
auto-lvm_tools.sh is part of partman-auto-lvm.

Is that so hard to figure out by yourself?
Please READ FIRST, then THINK and DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH, then THINK AGAIN

And what do you think i am trying to do since a couple of hours ? Getting the
box up, and trying to investigate the raid stuff, reading through the partman
spagetti code, and so on.

Do you also read what i wrote ? you asked that i look at
/lib/partman/recipes.sh, which is a d-i thingy, but i can't reboot the box
right now, so i want to look at the actual code, doing the selection, to see
if i can find something in it, is it so difficult to say :

  recipes.sh is in partman-auto ?

would it not have cost much less time and energy to say just that, and not the
full-cap message above ?

Please calm down, how can we ever work together, if you jump to agressive
conclusions all the time ?

Ok, this is done. There are still many leaf mirrors mirroring from it,

 We're sorry for the delay in informing Debian of this, we will have
to decommission archive.progeny.com. Progeny was just informed at the
beginning of this week that we'd have to find a new collocation location
& bandwidth for our server. We had already started the process to ask
other providers for help, but yesterday that fell through. We were
going to send out the e-mail today after deciding exactly when
archive.progeny.com would need brought down.
 Archive.progeny.com must be decommissioned at 22:00 EDT on Sunday,
October 22nd (02:00 UTC on Monday, October 23rd). We're sorry for
giving everybody slightly over a week to deal with this, but we were
exhausting all our options before taking this action.

 So, yes, Joey, please remove archive.progeny.com from both the
ftp.us.debian.org rotation as well as from the installer. We're sorry
to do this at such a tricky time for Debian.

===
> Note that archive.progeny.com also doesn't seem to have updated its
> Debian mirror since the 11th, or maybe the 8th.
===
 Yes, the network card is behaving badly on when transferring from
ftp-master.debian.org. We get "Oversized(?) Ethernet frame spanned
multiple buffer" warnings which slow the transfer rate to around 50kbps.
 Thus, it takes over 24 hours for the sync to successfully complete.
 With yesterday's decision to decommission the server in 9 days, it
doesn't seem to be a good use of resources to try to fix it.

Thanks for the report. I hope you could do a second test later after the
package is fixed and uploaded or, if you wish, you can test now a full

0)load the module
1)switch to VT2

tries so far, boot proceeded to the next line, "CPU#0 had 2672658 usecs, TSC
skew, fixed it up", and THEN the system froze.

CPU is an AMD Turion-64 X2 TL-50. 1.5 GB RAM.

Google and AltaVista searches find nothing useful on this message and I'm
not kernel hacker enough to start searching the source.

The system continues to work fine in Windows Media Center (which came
installed).

It can't be incompatible with Linux per se, because both the installer and
Knoppix can boot and run.

Anything I can do to help debug this?

Bug#392897: ntfsresize error is ignored, confusing the user

2006-10-13 Thread Carl Fink
Package: debian-installer
Version: Etch Beta 3
Severity: important

Installing Debian Etch on my HP Pavilion DV6119US laptop, I naturally had to
resize the NTFS partition to make room. Using the non-graphical installer,
I chose to manually edit the partition table, to resize the main NTFS
partition, and to make it 25 GB. There was a pause, and then the installer
returned to the previous screen without changing anything. No matter what
resizing I tried, the installer would seem to do nothing.

Getting a hint from the debian-user mailing list, I booted Knoppix and
manually ran "ntfsresize -i" against /dev/sda1. It responded:

ntfsresize v1.13.1-WIP (libntfs 9:0:0)
Device name: /dev/sda1
NTFS volume version: 3.1
Cluster size   : 4096 bytes
Current volume size: 66534257152 bytes (66535 MB)
Current device size: 66534257664 bytes (66535 MB)
Checking filesystem consistency ...
100.00 percent completed
Accounting clusters ...
Cluster accounting failed at 3147732 (0x3007d4): extra cluster in $Bitmap
Filesystem check failed! Totally 1 cluster accounting mismatches.
ERROR: NTFS is inconsistent. Run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot it TWICE!
The usage of the /f parameter is very IMPORTANT! No modification was
and will be made to NTFS by this software until it gets repaired.

Following ntfsresize's advice about chkdsk worked. After doing that, the
installer was able to resize the partition flawlessly.

I suspect you don't have a routine to trap that particular error message, so
it just gets ignored. It should instead be passed along to the user,
because it's important.

One side note: I had to run ntfsresize from Knoppix because if I switched to
VT2 (alt-F2) in the installer and ran any command that accessed the
filesystem (e.g. df, less, ntfsresize) the installer would freeze
unrecoverably 1-3 seconds later.

Thank you for all your work on Debian. Let me know if I can help you
resolve this problem.
