Normal, your aty rage128 is not a radeon, and is thus using whatever driver is
using the aty rage128, and thus the white-on-white problem is not gone for
you.

Can you check which graphic driver you are using, and submit a modification of
attilio's patch so you also disable the aty-rage128 driver ?

Or rather add an entry to the table at :

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/GUIToDo#head-11fd68e1908215eeafcecd3f30b04cb11aaa2448

BTW, do you confirm that the PowerMac3,5 is still "no way to make it work" ?

When I tried this mini.iso on a G4/533MHz "QuickSilver" tower with

Rick, IIUC your mails you should have three different PPC boxes for testing

*Powermac3,5
This is the model already listed in the PPC survey wiki page with you as
tester.
It's currently marked red (nogo), but your last test was not performed
with Sven's patched ISO: could you please try again booting Sven's ISO
and update results in the PPC survey page in the case of a success?

*PowerMac3,4
This is not listed yet in the PPC survey page yet, but you said you
managed to make it work with a littke tweaking, right?

Could you report in PPC survey page how you got this working?
In the case you want to disable the ATI128 directfb accelerator, you'll
have to add to your directfbrc file

disable-module=ati128

*PowerMac1,1

This is not listed yet in the PPC database: i don't know what DFB
accelerator (if any) matches that video chip, but you may try this

-boot textual
-rm -rf /usr/lib/directfb-0.9.25/gfxdrivers
-try the graphical drontend with both linux_input enabled and disabled

For all the three test machines you own, could you please add/update
corresponding entries to the PPC database in the wikipage?
This will be useful to know what works and what don't and so need
further debugging.

thanks a lot

Attilio

I added it just last week. It's a shell fragment that I load in the
environment for the dailies. With nothing like this in the environment,
it builds everything; and as you pointed out, that's not a good thing.

It's just that I forgot to add build_powerpc64_cdrom to the TARGETS env
var.

As discussed with you and eddy on IRC, i updated the patchfile.
Attached to this file you'll find the entire patchfile for both rootskel
and rootskel-gtk, even if only S50directfb-linux-powerpc was actually
updated.
As soon as a new test image is ready, i'll ask a PowerBook6,7 owner to
test it.

This is not a solution, but a workaround. Something is still flooding the
syslog with messages when it should not.
Does your system have pcmcia or not?

It still seems to be a kernel bug to me as the message you are seeing
endlessly repeated comes from the module pcmcia/i82365.ko:
./i82365.c:1283:printk(KERN_INFO "Intel ISA PCIC probe: ");

Please file a bug report against linux-2.6 with the information from this

Sparc and HPPA have now been switched to use initramfs initrds in Debian
Installer images.

For Sparc I have tested the installer still boots (CD and netboot) on my
Ultra 10 and Jurij Smakov has tested it for sparc32. For HPPA I have
tested this on my J5600.

If others have problems booting a daily image of the installer, but an

Ok, thank you first for your answer. I don't need pcmcia on a server, so I'll
give it a try., since those you can actually deactivate in the install process.

Now my test runs, took longer than I thought.
First I messed up 2 cds by burning them withou yaboot and yaboot.conf and
boot.msg. I took the ones from the netinst directories then. Also I needed to
start via open-firmware ... but that are the small issues.

First my hardware (from the os x panel) (CPU, graphic card and memory should be
enough info I guess):

Hardware Overview:

First I tried the 64 bit image:

booted kernel ok, but then got stuck in a black screen with the cursor in top
left corner.
if I tried if of-only it got stuck with a black screen with no cursor in top
left corner.
The fans beheaved normally though (the usually get into overdrive when I start
the installer in text mode).

Then the 32 bit image (which should fail I guess):

booted kernel ok, but then suddenly jumps back into open-firmware with a memory
violation. I couldn't read it quickly enough, since it spammed newlines. The
same happened with of-only.

Jan Schukat

Its around 12MB or something such.

can you do :

modify /etc/yaboot.conf, to add DEBIAN_FRONTEND=newt to the append= line.

once you are in the installer, go to console 2.

  add : "disable-module=nvidia" to /etc/directfbrc (using echo ... >> or nano).

  add : "disable-module=linux_input" to /etc/directfbrc (using echo ... >> or
nano).

  type : export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=gtk

  and then : debconf -f gtk -o d-i /usr/bin/main-menu

And report back.

Your /etc/fb should be : "0 NV#", where # is some number, can you confirm this
?

Note that this line is there, but is commented out

Instead of that last line you could just type: "debian-installer" ;-) -
easier to rmemeber and faster to type ;-)

Well, I can't get it up though (the installer I mean).

I simply burned the iso now, and still get the same results. But I booted
several times, to be able to see the alst message to be seen, and it was:

FATAL: Module usbkbd not found.

I guess the iso mustn't be that mini then ;)

BTW, is there a simple way, that I just haen't heard of yet, to save those
kernel boot messages from an installer cd? Or to at least stop the screen,s o
you can study them at your leisure?

Notice that there is no such thing as mainboard on 2.6.15 kernels, ubt a
motherboard field.

Maybe it would be better to ask for the machine: field ?

uhm, so you had both

disable-module=linux_input
disable-module=nvidia

in your directfbrc and still you weren't able to start the g-i, right?
I suggest you to boot textual once again and comment out

disable-module=linux_input

from directfbrc, while still adding

disable-module=nvidia

to directfbrc.

This will let us know if your box is like PowerBook6,7 , where
linux_input has to be enabled.

Ok, I can't get into the installer at all, since the usbkbd modue is missing.
So all I can do is seeing the kernel boot up and fail. No chance to get into

Ok. but I booted into my already existing debian install (however marginal it
may be, I barely use it) and did a complete info gathering, without the grep.
Is attched.

But the g-i test will have to wait, until it contains the usb-kbd module, and I
can actually do something with my keyboard. I can't do deb-confs or anything if
I cant get to any console.

ltsp-client-builder have the wrong priorit, wont be run from debian installer

2006-10-02 Thread Ronny Aasen

Package: ltsp-client-builder
Version: 0.99debian3

ltsp-client-builder should run after pkgsel, before finish install.
with ltsp-client-builder haveing a priority of 69, it wont be selected
in the meny and wont run unless you manualy select it. In effect it wont
run. And the ltsp chroot will not be created. ltsp-client-builder
should have a priority between 71 and 78.

In addition the file
http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/svn/debian-installer/installer/doc/devel/menu-item-numbers.txt
state that priorities should be assigned by debian-boot, and not picked
at random.

I have tested a local build ltsp with priority 73, and that was selected
as expected.

Would debian-boot please assign a priority to ltsp-client-builder ?
somewhere between pkgsel and finish-install

It seems there is no way to run g-i on your machine, don't know if

mark your case as failure to be able to keep track of this later.
If you can put your hands on a Radeon board, it would be interesting
testing if replacing the nvidia is enough to make g-i work: in this case
we would know the issue was related to the nvidia chip.

Bug#390760: debian-installer: Support targeted SELinux in the installer

2006-10-02 Thread Manoj Srivastava
Package: debian-installer
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

We are at a point where we can support a targeted SELinux
policy, at least in permissive mode, I suggest that we ship SELinux
installed, but turned off by default; and a README or a short shell
script fr the local administrator to enable SELinux. Our support at
this point is better in some respects to any other distribution
(selecting and installing modular policy modules, for instance). All
the core packages support SELinux (unlike in, say, Ubuntu).

We can do this by adding selinux-policy-refpolicy-targeted,
and the dependencies, to the installer.

With the help of
  apt-rdepends --dotty selinux-policy-refpolicy-targeted
I have managed to determine that the packages not already included in
 Priority Standard are:
,[ Additional packages required ]
| Package: selinux-policy-refpolicy-targeted
| Size: 1232692
| Installed-Size: 16712
|
| Package: policycoreutils
| Size: 348324
| Installed-Size: 3304
|
| Package: libsemanage1-dev
| Size: 333718
| Installed-Size: 2076
|
| Package: libsemanage1
| Size: 70910
| Installed-Size: 296
|
| Package: python-semanage
| Size: 115336
| Installed-Size: 648
|
| Package: python-selinux
| Size: 61788
| Installed-Size: 308
|
| Package: python-support
| Size: 22934
| Installed-Size: 104
`

The size of the .debs for targeted policy is 2185702 Bytes.

No special configuration should be required; the default
configuration out of the box ought to work.

As shipped, the Debian kernel images have SELinux compiled in,
but disabled, a command line parameter is required to turn SELinux
on. When SELinux is turned on (by enabling it in grub), the default
policy setting are that the machine would come on in permissive mode,
using the targeted policy; so the worst case scenario is that the
there would be lots of log messages if someone "accidentally" turned
 on SELinux.

I think we are ready. And shipping SELinux by default would

/proc/fb= 0 ATI Radeon QW

When I did "DEBIAN_FRONTEND=gtk ; debian-installer",

I got dropped into the text mode installer with the error message:
"Framebuffer not available. Disabling graphical frontend."
I tried it with all combinations of enable/disable of "linux_input"
and "radeon", with the same results.

I also tried it on another machine with ATI Rage128 graphics card

/proc/cpuinfo= PowerMac3,1 (PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics)
lspci= ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS
/proc/fb= 0 ATY Rage128

I only did this one with both disables in place (unmodified /etc/
directfbrc file).

It also gave me the same error message about "Framebuffer not
available" and dropped me in the text mode installer.

Is it possible that this image is broken in some fundamental way?

Hope this helps!

Rick

What about we add it as a task on tasksel and make grub-installer
enable it in case of the task is selected?

install on new computer; no cd available

2006-10-02 Thread dtutty
Hello,

I've tried searching the archives for this but am still unclear.

My main computer (P-II) died suddenly. I have backups so that's ok.

I got my old computer (486) running (so I can send this email and carry
on with life) but it cant' run my CD burner and with an ISA bus, it
can't do USB.

I'm building a new computer:
AMD Athlon 64 X2, AM2
Asus M2N-SLI board with nVidia nForce 570 chipset
1 GB stick of ECC ram
basic video
SATA 80 GB Seagate Barricuda drive.
Zip drive (most recent backups on Zips).
LG CD/DVD burner.
Could add a floopy if it would help.

The last installation media I have is 3.0 (full CD set, and all
floppy images and basedebs tarball on Zip disk, with backups, in the
bank (CDs don't fit).

The one thing in my backup/recovery plan I forgot was that SATA wasn't
around when 3.0 was made.

My 486 can do two or three things:

1. Download and make floppies. Is there any forcast when Etch
will have floppy-install working? With woody, I tested that
I could boot from floppy then install base off the zip.

2. Make zips. On my old computers, I haven't been able to
get a grub floppy to boot something on the zip. With 96 MB
available, is there an iso file I can put on it?

3. I may be able to find an old IDE disk and put stuff there
for a hard disk install and use a grub boot-disk to boot,
but I don't know if IDE hard-disk boot works on this main
board, since its really for ATAPI CDROM drives.

My 486 is shoehorned on a small hard drive since the P-II took my other
drives with it. I don't think I have enough room to run NFSd although
it does run ssh.

Confounding all this is that I'm on dialup in the country. I would like
to know what specifically to download and try, rather than downloading
everything. Since downloading images takes so long, and CPU prices are
coming down, I havn't actually got the guts of the computer yet; I want
to have a plan to install before I buy it (I have the case, PSU, SATA,
and my zip and burner installed).

Is there anyway to bootstrap the bootstrap; boot up with the 3.0 CD
(assuming it boots), then from the shell of the installer memu have it
transfer to (rather than boot) the Etch installer iso on a zip disk?
Some sort of swtich-root as opposed to chroot?

Any other ideas? I would really like floppy booting to work since I can
make those on my 486.

Thanks,

Doug

First pass at 'customization-modules'

2006-10-02 Thread Nathanael Nerode
I've uploaded a tarball to
http://home.twcny.rr.com/nerode/neroden/debian/customization-modules.tar.gz .

I think this should explain why I split net-retriever-core from net-retriever
(#389430); it's sort of dumb, but net-retriever assumes in several places
that it's downloading from an official Debian repository, and gets the name
of that repository from choose-mirror. For our purposes, we want to be
able to download from an arbitrary repository.

Everything for customization-modules is done in a fairly blunt and direct
manner. I think the floppy option has the best chance of working out of the
box. I think the net option is pretty likely to work, except for the
automatic use of a proxy. I'm not so sure about the more complicated CD
option, because of the unmounting and remounting. I'm not at all sure whether
I got the Depends: line right.

No testing has been done yet, because I'm still struggling with the installer
image building process. :/ So there may be stupid bugs. Hopefully I'll
manage to do testing soon.

In the meantime, anyone who wants to improve this, go for it.

Dictionaries-common prompts users FIVE times during a default French desktop install

2006-10-02 Thread Christian Perrier
While testing D-I with the install of the desktop task in French
language, I have noticed that there are several successive prompts for
dictionaries settings:

-first choose between American English and "handle symlinks youself"
-then choose between American English, "francais" and "handle symlinks youself"
-then choose between "francais", "francais GUTenberg" and "handle symlinks
youself"
-then choose between "ameriucan English", "francais", "francais GUTenberg" and
"handle symlinks youself"
-finally choose between "american English", "british", "francais", "francais
GUTenberg" and "handle symlinks youself"

It seems that each time a new dictionary is added (by tasksel
settings), the user is then prompted at high priority.

This makes the default install a real pain, unfortunately, and this
sounds really strange.

More funnily, this was *not* happening a while ago during my tests of
default installs in French.

Is there something we can do about this...hopefully *before* Etch ?

I suggest keeping the CC list in answers, unless Agustin explicitely
says that [EMAIL PROTECTED] really reaches him (@p.d.o
addresses need X-PTS-Approved headers, IIRC).
