Bug#369456: debian-installer: Multiple CD installation not possible

The following support the implication. 1. The network installation does this. This is also achieved by the first DVD, but only because ~99% of the packages that people want are on this DVD. 2. The automatic provision to scan discs and run tasksel after the reboot, as found in sarge, has been removed. Bug#369664: Graphical DebianInstaller does not save passwords
Package: DebianInstaller Version: Etch Sorry for any confusion, the homepage of the DebianInstaller is not very clear how and where to send bugreports for the DebianInstaller. If the human maintainer of the bugtracker could be so kind to forward this report to the developers, i would be grateful. The actual bugreport: When using the graphical frontend of the Debian installer the user is asked for a root password and for a password of any newly created user. Unfortunatly these passwords are not saved, so that a login after installation fails. I used the Etch netinstall snapshot from the 28th of May 2006 and repeated this once with the same result. I don't know what information could be useful for you, so i just drop in some random data. I designated four partitions: / on XFS (hda6) /home on XFS (hda5) /boot on ext2 (hda2) swap on swap (hda3) I did not use DHCP but a static adress in my C-class LAN. After two failed attempts i used the normal textmode installer and installation succeeded on first try. The advice might be a bit over the top, 2.3.6-13 is supposed to fix that particular bug, which AFAICS means older images will work again once it is built and in the archive. how to rotate a image display in DirectFB?
Dear all, Does anyone tell me how to display a image in DirectFB, the image format may be JPEG or Bitmap. Regards, Yunfeng
Re: [directfb-dev] how to rotate a image display in DirectFB?
Hi, You should have a look at the DirectFB API http://www.directfb.org/index.php?path=Documentation%2FAPI+Reference The IDirectFBImageProvider is used for getting information about and loading one image from a file. Is there a better description of how the partitioning system hangs together (as far as where scripts go and such) than http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/svn/debian-installer/installer/doc/devel/partman/partman-doc.sgml ? I tried going through that, but I had the very devil of a time trying to actually understand how it all works. I strongly suspected that a custom udeb was the answer, but I didn't want to assume too much. I presume that if I just remove all of the partman-related udebs, and create matts-own-partitioner.udeb (and make sure it ends up in the d-i Packages.gz) it'll work nicely -- what I'm curious about is how I wire up the custom udeb to make it interact with the rest of the system, in (at least) the following ways: 1) Run at the right time (in the order of sequence) 2) Have all of the partitions mounted in /target 3) Have /target/etc/fstab written And so on. > The work is relatively easy, and you can take the nobootloader package as an > example, which is indeed just a simple script with a few debconf stuff needed > to print a user-informing message. I'm comfortable wiring up a custom install CD -- I've already done a little bit of that (removed a couple of problematic udebs in an instalinux CD I was using, and mangled preseed files onto a CD) so that part of it shouldn't be a drama. > Alternatively, you could help working on partman until it does what you need, > which is the responsible altough long-termed thing to do. I think that counts as *very* long-term. Considering the trouble I've had understanding even the basics of d-i, I don't think you want me poking around at it's internals too much too quickly. I've also noticed that, despite some attempts, there's still very little in the way of LVM support in partitioning recipes (that I can find documented at least; partman-auto-lvm is there, but I can't work out how to feed it a recipe), and if the best-and-brightest of the d-i team haven't come up with a good solution, it's quite unlikely that I'll do any better. My needs are also quite specialised -- I need a single CD which will do different things based on hardware configuration, which will probably always best be served by a shell script rather than a recipe. One thing I'll almost certainly end up doing, though, is documenting my travels with the custom partitioner, in case others wish to follow in my footsteps that way. Perhaps that's the contribution I can make -- that elusive preseed option that runs a shell script to do partitioning instead of invoking all of partman. As an aside, is there a suggested method for testing d-i udebs? I'd prefer not to have to reinstall a real machine every time, and qemu is just so damn slow... - Matt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Re: [directfb-dev] how to rotate a image display in DirectFB?
Dear Pedro, My question is not the simple display of an image by DirectFB, I want to rotate the image by 90 degrees first , then to display it by DirectFB. I cannot find any APIs in DirectFB LIB which can support image rotation display. Ah, no, as far as i see it, the partman stuff is an unscrutable spagetti mess, I was not speaking of modifying partman there, but providing a .udeb which would do your script, and place itself as default in higher priority than partman for doing the partitioning task. > I strongly suspected that a custom udeb was the answer, but I didn't want to > assume too much. I presume that if I just remove all of the partman-related > udebs, and create matts-own-partitioner.udeb (and make sure it ends up in Nope, you can leave them there, if i am not wrong, the fact that matts-own-partitioner.udeb has a higher menu item number and provide the right functionality, should be enough. We already have two partitioners in d-i, partman and autopartkit, so you can see how they do it. > the d-i Packages.gz) it'll work nicely -- what I'm curious about is how I > wire up the custom udeb to make it interact with the rest of the system, in > (at least) the following ways: As said, have a look at the nobootloader control file. It runs (after though) the other bootloader-installers, like grub-installer, so it does exactly what you want, and is dead simple. Here is its control file : Package: nobootloader XC-Package-Type: udeb Architecture: all Provides: bootable-system Depends: cdebconf-udeb, base-installer (>= 1.23), di-utils-mapdevfs XB-Installer-Menu-Item: 77 Description: Don't install any bootloader. The Provides: bootable-system is the virtual package provided by all boot-loader installer, you can simply provide the equivalent one provided by partman and autopartkit. > 2) Have all of the partitions mounted in /target > 3) Have /target/etc/fstab written euh ... Well, i am not an expert of those twos, but maybe looking at autopartkit would be more useful, here is its control file : Package: autopartkit XC-Package-Type: udeb Architecture: any Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, e2fsprogs-udeb, libuuid1-udeb, libparted1.6-udeb, cdebconf-udeb (>= 0.43), disk-detect, md-modules, lvm10-udeb | lvm2-udeb, partconf-mkfstab, di-utils (>= 1.15) Provides: mounted-partitions, created-fstab, made-filesystems, partitioned-harddrives XB-Installer-Menu-Item: 50 Description: Automatically Partition Hard Drives (unsafe) This module will automatically partition the harddrive on which you wish ... So, you see, there is a whole lot of provides you have to do, and i guess you can do those manually. > As an aside, is there a suggested method for testing d-i udebs? mdadm heads-up: deprecating mdrun

Debian-installer comes in different flavours intended for different uses. The main thing that differs are the modules available in the initrd, in your case you should try to install everything from the net, that is net-install. Let me quote an earlier post to this list about the debian-installer: There are three different stages A, B and C, that can be loaded by different means: A. How to *start* the debian-installer? 1. Boot from removable media that has an installer-image on its boot block (e.g. CDROM, floppy, usb) 2. Use a bootloader from within a existing operating system (yaboot, BootX, penguin) 2b. (possible, but not very common) Use a native bootloader (yaboot, grub, lilo) installed on harddisk) 3. Netboot (pxe or other methods gets a bootloader by dhcp and tftp) (pxelinux or yaboot loads (by tftp) the kernel and initrd needed) B. From where is the debian-installer to get its *own modules* (needed for its own functioning)? 1. From the removable media (CDROM or usb) that started the debian-installer at boot 2. From .iso-file on local harddisk (Filesystem must be readable by the debian-installer, which exludes HFS+) 3. From the net (internet or local debian-mirror) C. From where is the debian-installer to get the software that will *install* C1: The base system 1. From the removable media (CDROM or usb) that started the debian-installer at boot 2. From .iso-file on local harddisk (Filesystem must be readable by the debian-installer, which exludes HFS+) 3. From the net (internet or local debian-mirror) C2: Additional packages 1. From the removable media (CDROM or usb) that started the debian-installer at boot 2. From .iso-file on local harddisk (Filesystem must be readable by the debian-installer, which exludes HFS+) 3. From the net (internet or local debian-mirror) You control B by choosing what images you will use. I *think* any image can be started in any of the tree ways outlined in A (thus netboot does NOT imply a tftp boot). "Netboot" means B:3 "Hd-media" means B:2 "Business" means B:1 I think that you can choose C1 and C2 at install time (if you run the installer at a low enough priority) > In fact only these steps are avaible: > > main-menu,languagechooser,countrychooser,kbd-chooser,hw-detect,cdrom-detect,cdrom-checker,shell > > > . > > So i don't have > netcfg,iso-scan,choose-mirror,partman,autopartkit,partitioner,partconf,base-installer,os-prober,bootloader-installer,base-config > > Actually i have got the debian-businnesscard iso [ from wich i have took > the kernel, yaboot and so on placed in /tftpboot ], I think that when you use the initrd from the businesscard flavor that means B:1, so you will have to use a usb-stick to load parts of the installer. Another strategy is to download an kernel+initrd from the netboot flavour and boot with those, which will be able to do B:3. > it fits the usb key > but i don't know how to reach and use it. > > The usb key is seen as /dev/scsi/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/disc on the > mac, i can cat/head and so on the raw content, but i am unable to mount > it. Actually it has a vfat fs on top. As implied above business flavour mean B:1, and you seem to want B:2. I suspect that will not work. For it to work, use a kernel+initrd from the hd-install flavor of d-i. Bug#369664: Graphical DebianInstaller does not save passwords
> The actual bugreport: > When using the graphical frontend of the Debian installer the user is > asked for a root password and for a password of any newly created user. > Unfortunatly these passwords are not saved, so that a login after > installation fails. That sounds fairly strange because the code is actually...the same. Which type of keyboard were you using. If not using a US keyboard, did you put "special" characters in the passwords? The current keyboard handling in g-i is not perfect because of the gtkdfb version we use. So, your problem might be here. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Given that your installation was a complete success, I do as usual with reports for successful installations: I close the bug..:-) This does not of course mean you weren't right to report. Hmmm, I maybe wasn't clear. We'll if "I'll do it" meant "You do it", then I'm afraid it wasn't very clear :) Here, I think it would be better if you make the change because this requires going to the code and, ahem, I don't want to break everything..:-) I'll commit a fix to SVN ASAP. I'll also change the menu choices from e.g. "Create logical volume" to "Create a logical volume" per comments I've gotten from translators. This (and the further comments you made below) give me an "aha!" moment about how d-i works out what to run -- it seems like, once one package which Provides: the appropriate bits and pieces (mounted-partitions, etc) has run, no others of the same ilk get run -- is that about right? > We already have two partitioners in d-i, partman and autopartkit, so you can > see how they do it. I was going to mention autopartkit in my last message, but I thought it was some sort of after-partman thing (didn't realise about the Provides: stuff). I think I'll have a closer look at autopartkit -- it may do what I want (or at least, it's name suggests it might). > There is a document somewhere which describe the menu item priority numbers. I think I've seen it -- installer/doc/devel/menu-item-numbers.txt, right? I've also just had a re-read of doc/devel/design.txt after reading your message, and it's making a bit more sense now. I haven't found (or at least, didn't recognise when I saw it) the canonical list of valid options for Provides: entries and what precisely they mean, but I'll either find it or work out what I need from the values in partman and autopartkit. > > 1) Run at the right time (in the order of sequence) > > This is what XB-Installer-Menu-Item: is for. Well, then that's probably the problem. Just try entering your passwords in a field where you can see what's displayed, for instance, the system name input dialog box, at the beginning of the install. You'll see that the "#" characters are not inputted (dunno where they are on a german keyboard). There are also problemns with capitalized letters (already reported). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I selected german on all three accounts (language, location, keyboard) in the installer process. Both passwords, root and 1st user, ended on "##" (w/o quotes), so you seem to be spot on. Unfortunatly i didn't try any password without special characters, but i will install another Etch on the weekend and i will try the g-i with a mixture of plain passwords and some with special characters and report if i notice a pattern. Alright! Here's the xev output, i hope that helps to identify the problem. Keep up the good work! Autopartkit is used by the debian-edu/skolelinux folk, not sure what exactly it does though. BTW, what exactly do you need. The first time i ran d-i in early 2003, autopartkit was the default, and it ate my devel harddisk without asking any question, so i never ever looked at it. > > There is a document somewhere which describe the menu item priority numbers. > > I think I've seen it -- installer/doc/devel/menu-item-numbers.txt, right?
