I ve got a 'legacy usb' option in my bios but even if I disable or
enable it, i ve got no usb keyboard with a 2.6 kernel. And this option
is a little bit dangerous because i only have a usb keyboard and after
disableling it i was unable to enter the bios configuration menu again
(I had to clear the bios directly using the jumper on the motherboard)
I try also to boot using 'noapic nolapic' and no usb keyboard too.

I also noticed some kind of memory problem after reboot several time
(maybe the ram is not compatible?)

libreadline4 - bug #276617 still there

2004-11-04 Thread Michal Hajek
Hello, I am trying to install debian sarge and I am experiencing
completely same problem as described at:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=276617

Down at the page Steve Langasek claims, that the bug has been fixed but
it is obviously not the case.

I tried the instalation with two different images:
first from (downloaded 3.11.2004)
http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/daily/i386/current/

and than from (downloaded 4.11.2004)

http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/sid_d-i/i386/pre-rc2/

The pre-rc2 image has no errata about libreadline

I used Czech Republic mirrors as apt sources
(eg. ftp.zcu.cz)
and also American one (ftp.debian.org). But still with the same result.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for any help.
Best regards
Michal Hajek

I didn't realise we needed the new parted. On some architectures it
depends on libreadline5, which we may well not be letting into sarge
because it's causing problems at the moment.

Could a new version please be uploaded that build-depends on
libreadline4-dev rather than libreadline-dev, so that we don't get
random dependencies based on whatever the buildd feels like choosing?

We could set DEBCONF_ADMIN_EMAIL while running tasksel too, I guess.

Andreas Barth just made me aware of this problem (Actually not a problem of
parted, but caused by the new libreadline5 upload). I am preparing a new
upload with the correct dependency, and will upload before dinstall today.

Maybe you can add some brief instructions about how to flash a machine
to use SRM (or put in a reference to the SRM HOWTO - unfortunately,
it's a bit out of date though and doesn't contain an up-to-date
location of the SRM binaries). I have at least one box which doesn't
have SRM so I could even test this.

Yes, aboot had the right partition information (only the "console=.."
was missing).

Nope. This is a current problem in testing. Until it is fixed you need
to install unstable.

Since I installed with the old CD after this, it seems the log files where
overwritten, and I can not install again just for testing, this will have to
wait until we get the next AMD64, which will probably have the same MB.

As for the onboard nic (which died after less than a days usage), I don't see
it in lspci, I think it is one of the unknown devices, I am guessing one of
the Bridges:

It is supported by the forcedeth driver:

eth0, before the builtin firewire and the builtin nforce3.

Sarge Boot CD support for LSI MegaRAID ATA133 Controller

2004-11-04 Thread Michael Lueck
The correct driver for the LSI MegaRAID ATA133 controller does not seem to be a part of the standard Sarge CD. I have two drives configured as a mirror, but the Sarge CD sees them as two separate IDE
drivers, and indeed installs to only one of the two drives in the mirror.

The board has a SiliconeImage chip on it, and I see some sort of "SI..." driver listed
in lsmod, so I am guessing Debian picked up the controller chip on the board, minus the RAID
capabilities.
The board looks to have been out for two years now.
Did I miss something for how to boot up and get IDE RAID (mirror) support, to see the
two drives as one logical drive, or is this indeed a result of lacking the proper
driver?

Comments/Problems:
The Notebook comes with Phoenix's cME (core Management Environment)
which uses a Host Protected Area of 10GB on the Harddisk. (Fujitsu
MHS2060AT 60GB). I don't want to use the Phoenix Recovery feature (for
which the reserved 10GB are meant to be used) and the HPA but cannot
turn it off in the BIOS. Knoppix discovers the full capacity of the
drive and allows me to create partitions, filesystems in the HPA. di
currently doesn't.

dmesg after Knoppix boot (V3.4, Kernel 2.4.23-xfs) tells me:
--snip--
hda: Host Protected Area detected.
current capacity is 104041314 sectors (53269 MB)
native capacity is 117210240 sectors (60011 MB)
hda: Host Protected Area disabled
hda: 117210240 sectors (60011 MB) [...]
--snap--
whereas dmesg on a shell during the di-setup tells me:
--snip--
hda: Host Protected Area detected.
current capacity is 104041314 sectors (53269 MB)
native capacity is 117210240 sectors (60011 MB)
hda: 104041314 sectors (53269 MB) [...]
--snap--
obviously the default behaviour of how to treat the HPA-"feature"
differs between the knoppix and the di kernel.

Unfortunately I was not able to get the di kernel to disable the HPA,
too. I tried the following boot parameters:

hd=7296,255,63 (which is the "native" geometry reported by fdisk on knoppix)
hda=stroke (which after looking at the source of the current ide-driver
should disable HPA, I think)

hda=noprobe hda=stroke hda=7296,255,63
but nothing works. I have the feeling that these options aren't even
passed to the ide-driver which is loaded after the 3 language settings
during setup are configured.

I tried to load the ide-generic module from a shell, before di loads it with
modprobe ide-generic hda=stroke
and some other options as mentioned above.
but all of that has no effect. di still recognizes the drive as
53.something GB and does not allow me to install into the last 10GB of
the disk.

(btw. removing the ide-driver at this stage with modprobe -r ide-generic
causes a segfault in the kernel! That's pretty ugly even if the ide
module is not to be expected to be removed, anyway. While experimenting
I had to do several reboots because of that.)

I tried to shrink my XP-Partition and install debian into the "official"
disk-space, but this causes an even more severe problem. In that case
the installation goes very well at first. Everything is copied and GRUB
is installed into the MBR. But after the reboot GRUB says (approximately
from my memory):

GRUB stage 1.5

loading GRUB, please wait...
And nothing happens. Not even an error message. I can only hard-reset.
Probably GRUB gets confused with the 2 drive geometries (thanks to HPA)
and can't access the stage2? I have booted knoppix, mounted and chrooted
the debian partition and rerun grub-install: No effect.
The problem then was that the Windows XP-CD didn't boot after that for
some reason(black screen after scanning hardware and the disk LED
flashing for a splitsecond) which would have allowed me to reinstall the
Windows-MBR.

-> I had to completely reinstall XP after zeroing out the MBR!!!
So, since it can be expected that more and more notebooks will be built
with this nice HPA/cME-"feature" (I didn't know about it when I bought
the notebook and had to do some googling) this should really be given
some thought, I guess. What about a boot switch that disables HPA? It is
obviously possible to safely just ignore it if the user doesn't want to
use the cME features. I have done that with knoppix and successfully
created a filesystem in that area of the disk and stored some gigs of
data there. The partition survived reboots but is not accessible with
anything else but Knoppix. :-(

Apart from that: di is great work! Keep going. I'm a real debian-fan but
the old install system really was a pain. di is awesome. Thank you so much!

cheers,
-Marvin

Do you have any reason to think that the kernel supports your
(pseudo-)hardware raid as such at all? Why not use software raid?

Comments/Problems:

After the reboot, the Debian Base System Configuration occurs. I
configured apt to the four ftp sites noted above, using "testing" as
the distribution. I then went to "Select and install packages". This is
where I ran into trouble.

I selected "manual package selection" and then OK. The screen went
black while a few lines were printed out, then suddenly the screen went
back to the installer (blue background with low-res graphics) saying
that the installation had failed. Specifically:

There was a problem installing the selected software

One or more packages failed to install. This may be due to bugs in the
packages, or you may be out of disk space or experiencing some other
problem.
...

PROBLEM 1
-
The real error was on the black screen, but it was overwritten so fast
by the generic "installation failed" screen that I couldn't see what
failed or why. Only by timing a CTRL/S press *just right* was I able to
see the underlying cause.

Please correct the installer to capture the screen output or pause the
screen display before erasing it, so that if failures occur, they can
be seen. This makes it easier to report.

PROBLEM 2
-
The contents of the black screen with white letters is this:

It has to be tested...:-)

A few other fixes I added in the same base-config release were indeed
broken. So, some doubt may remain and I understand that Joey may be
reluctant in adding this fix to sarge's base-config.

That one is probably a bit safer, though.

I still have to test and review the patch (base-config is frozen).

Is it indeed true that you're doing a CD install except for the security
source?

Out of curiosity, how do you manage translations when tasks are
dynamically created?

Tested using the netinst iso from
http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/sid_d-i/i386/20041102/

Primary install source is on my local subnet.

Thanks,

 Paul.

This is probably because of the problem of the Woody packages on the
security archive for Testing which I have mentioned a few times.

You probably did not select any other source for p[ackage installation
after the reboot than your netinst CD.
This is not really supported.
Adding a network mirror (http:// source) to your /etc/apt/sources.list
should solve this problem.

That's a problem I did not take into account. Is there any straight

In that case you're hitting some other bug, it should have set up the
proxy for your main apt source and continued to use it for security.
I've verified that the proxy stuff works when entered by hand, have not
gotten a chance to try it with preseeding yet.

Hmm, well, that case (netinst CD then security download failing in 2nd
stage) is the exact case for which I reported #255651...and proposed
the fix I sent for it.

This fix is not easy to test because the situation mostly shows up for
netinst CDs...which always use sarge base-config

Testing my fix needs to manually change apt-setup with the fix before
running 2nd stage.or manually install sid's base-config at the end
of 1st stage.

After some thinking, I imagine that my fix for 255651 may have other
consequences:
# Ask about a proxy if no proxy is yet defined.
if [ "$URI" = "http" ] && [ -z "$http_proxy" ]; then
if [ ! -e "$APTETC/apt.conf" ] || \
   ! grep -iq 'Acquire::http::Proxy' $APTETC/apt.conf; then
db_input high mirror/http/proxy || true
.../...

With that, if the earlier stages have already prompted the user for a
proxy and the user did not enter anything because she doesn't need
one...then she will be prompted again for a proxy. In short, netboot
and businesscard installs are likely to prompt twice for a proxy.

A better fix would be:

if URI is http and http_proxy is empty and mirror/http/proxy has not
been seen ; then
  input for proxy
fi
