The process was a lot smoother and a lot faster. The only annoyance I had was the lack of granularity in the new options for tasksel, which I don't think is relevant to this package report. Anyway, before it seemed to install more of the software I needed by default, whereas this time, I am going to have to pick a lot of very common things by hand that didn't install for whatever reason with the options I chose - like binutils, gcc, etc. It's very strange to leave those sorts of things out, I think. Overall, I was really pleased with the new installer. I've always considered Debian my favorite distro, but the install was a pain. Bug#246483: Should install SMP kernel automatically
Hi, On my initial reading of the postinst script for the base-installer package it should install an smp kernel on systems which have multiple processors mentioned in dmesg. However I think that at no point in the installer does it indicate thats its installing such a kernel. Your bug report indicates that you are running the smp kernel, if you didn't install this yourself then we have some reason for concern and should take a look. Depends on whether libreiserfs is installed in the installer or not. If the user tries to resize a partition with unsupported file system the following happens: 1. If the partition doesn't exist on the disk (because it is new) then it is immediately resized 2. If the partition exists on the disk then a. the user sees a confirmation dialog b. the changes are written to the disk c. partman attemts to resize (it simply uses the capability of parted) d. parted fails but partman doesn't care about this e. the user is returned to the main partitioning screen where the partition has its old size > Having said this, I have not attempted to resize an NTFS partition with > the latest version of qtparted (which is 0.4.4). Need a way for repeated choices in "select" questions
Package: debconf, cdebconf The questions with type "select" are not supposed to be used in the way partman uses it. They doesn't allow to choose among repeated entries. This causes problems when two partitions are so similar that partman prints two equal lines for them - typicaly two partitions with same size and same number on two disks with equal geometry or RAID or LVM volumes. If you really wanted to you could possibly use cdebconf's transled list features to provide an "english translation" that uses the same text for items while being backed by a real list that uses unique lines for everything. I don't know if that would work, it probably depend's in the implementation, and possibly on the frontend (this would be impossible to do with debconf's dialog frontend, for instance). I doubt you'll get better support from either debconf. > On Wed, Aug 11, 2004 at 04:29:17PM -0300, Joey Hess wrote: > > > > I thought I had seen more recent reports of #241785. > > > > Have you seen #263046? Bug#243024: marked as forwarded (Unable to modify disks on a machine with Mylex Acceleraid 170 RAID controller (DAC960 controller). This is because of the unusual partition scheme used by the driver: the first logical disk is /dev/rd/c0d0 and the partitions are /dev/rd/c0d0p1, /dev/rd/c0d0p2, etc. Howerver parted expects the naming scheme to be the usual for devfs (../disc, ../part1, ../part2, and so on). As a result partman attempts to mount/format unexisting devices. I do not know how to fix this. In my opinion this is not a bug in parted but in the DAC960 driver.)

This is partly my (mainboard's) fault, partly installer's. The situation is: My Mainboard only supports either PIO, or harddisks larger than 128 GB. d-i enabled dma. In windows, I had pio disabled and created an extended partition, and I wanted to install debian into a logical partition inside that one. Now, that extended partition crossed that 128 GB boundary. /sbin/fdisk didn't seem to mind much; cfdisk did (complained that partition table was larger than disk), and I assume that is the reason why d-i didn't show any partitions on this harddisk, even though a NTFS partition did exist. imho it should have shown it. anyway, eventually I deleted that partition, and decided to only use the lower 128 GB. I can't remember if I let d-i partition automagically, I don't think I did. That was the first problem. The next problem was: At the end of the installation, d-i tried to upgrade the system. Unfortunately console-common seems to have a problem in testing, which caused an "error 9" when installing. I fixed this by changing "testing" to "unstable" in

Do you know if if you create the partition table and then exit from partman and rerun it, the partition table is still not recognised? If this is so then probably parted doesn't recognise this partition table as well? This is good - you will be able to create a valuable bug report against parted with dumped partition table. If this is not so, then we have at least some workaround that can be documented in the ERRATA. Anton Zinoviev -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#264348: more information needed about your installation report
I don't know what to do about your installation report. You marked several steps as failing (configure network, partition hard drive, create file systems, mount partitions, install base system, install boot loader), and marked others with this strange "X" that means absolutely nothing: > Base System Installation Checklist: > > Initial boot worked:[X] > Configure network HW: [E] > Config network: [E] > Detect CD: [X] > Load installer modules: [X] > Detect hard drives: [X] > Partition hard drives: [E] > Create file systems:[E] > Mount partitions: [E] > Install base system:[E] > Install boot loader:[E] > Reboot: [X] > [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it And all you gave us to go on is a fairly useless dmesg output, the only interesting part is at the end: > VFS: Can't find ext2 filesystem on dev fd(2,0). > cramfs: wrong magic > Unable to identify CD-ROM format. So maybe you had a problem with your CD drive, but without some english text describing your problem, I'm afraid we can't help you. Another long pause before the keyboard layout selection. (By 'long,' I mean about two seconds.) The installer does not configure non-free sources. Is this new Debian policy? (It's fairly easy to edit sources.list by hand but is there a way for a new user to do this as an option in the install?) Good things: Autodetecting modules is very nice--I had to manually figure out which network card VMware used with woody's install and add the module for it. Mirror selection is better. stable/testing/unstable is a nice touch. The partioner is fantastic--especially easy on the empty (emulated) disk I used. I prefer this installer's Grub to woody's default LILO. Sound works with no manual intervention on this setup. --- Received: (at 264415-done) by bugs.debian.org; 12 Aug 2004 16:14:14 + >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Aug 12 09:14:13 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from kitenet.

Re: Bug#265085: changing language half-way through install results in old language in base-config

The rest of the d-i install happened in German, but > once I got to base-config, it was in English. This is probably because the countrychooser doesn't run after language selection unless it is selected from the main-menu, and as a result the unresolved localecode 'de' is passed to base-config as it is, hence it can't be found in SUPPORTED locales list which in turn base-config fallbacks to English. Some languages with multiple regions have 'xx' entries in languagelist, and German is one of them ('de'). Only countrychooser/postinst has the code to convert such entries. I don't know the details of main-menu, is there a mechanism to call the countrychooser whenever the user selects languagechooser? Otherwise we could apply a hack in languagechooser to call countrychooser for this type of second runs (but skip for the first run). Let me know if I can do anything (i.e. working on a patch) for this issue. -- roktas signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Hi! You probably hit some rare but that we can not reproduce. If you have the oportunity to retry the installer please send us the files /var/log/partman and /var/log/messages. If you manage to complete the installation these files will be preserved in the directory /var/log/debian-installer. Bug#265194: resizing needs to be mentioned more in the partitioning utility

For ext2, ext3 and reiserfs: the start of the partition must stay fixed. 2. For ext2, ext3: the partition you copy to must be bigger or exactly the same size as the partition you copy from. 3. For ext2 and ext3: the checking is limited to ensuring the resize and copy commands will be ok. 4. For fat: the size of the new partition after resizing or copying is restricted by the cluster size. Parted can shrink the cluster size, so you can always shrink your partition. However, if you can't use FAT32 for some reason, you may not be able to grow your partition. 5. Parted supports both FAT16 and FAT32. Parted can convert file systems between FAT16 and FAT32, if necessary. 6. Reiserfs support is enabled if you install libreiserfs, available at http://reiserfs.osdn.org.ua. (It is likely to be availabe soon from http://www.namesys.com) This diagram came straight from: http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/parted.html >> I >> expect >> this documentation to at least mention which types of partition are in >> fact resizable: >> ntfs? (I hope yes!) > > No. ntfs is completely unsupported by d-i although so many file systems > are supported. Ouch. Of all filesystem types to be able to resize, this one is the most sorely missed by a long shot, IMHO. This is because most PC's out there have one big NTFS partition on them (as shipped by virtually all PC vendors, having Windows XP pre-installed). IMHO, Therefore a huge majority of "Windows refugees" would want this feature. >> This additional information may be pivotal in people deciding to install >> Debian whatsoever, as many people aren't ready to risk losing their >> current Windows install, and don't have access to commercial software >> likePartition Magic. I know of one friend who >> would install Sarge right now if he knew that the Sarge installation CD >> could resize an NTFS partition during installation (or knew of a utility >> that could in a proven fashion). Upon further investigation, "qtparted" is just a fancy gui that makes calls to command line utilities. To resize NTFS partitions, it calls the "ntfsresize" command, which comes in the Debian package "ntfstools". The version of ntfstools in sarge and sid is version 1.9.0-1, however the newest version is 1.9.2, available in a statically linked format here: http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfsresize.html#static Due to it being statically linked, how realistic would it be to include it in d-i, and have it be usable by the partitioning utility alongside GNU parted? Is there some political reason that GNU parted must be the only utility allowing the resizing of partitions? In other words, are there any non-obvious barriers to adding NTFS resizing in d-i, granted the ntfsresize utility is sitting there begging to be used for this purpose? > > Anton Zinoviev > Thanks for your explanations of how the partitioning utility in d-i works, Anton. One reason that there is no enough time before the release of sarge (but who knows). Another reason is that ntfstools are not yet packaged as udeb. > In other words, are there any non-obvious barriers to adding NTFS resizing > in d-i, granted the ntfsresize utility is sitting there begging to be used > for this purpose? No. However I think there are some efforts to add to parted support to resize ntfs by external library (as this is done with reiserfs). It was previously suggested to rename the inital boot dialog, like s/press Return to boot/press Return to install Debian/ or something 2. If I don't have a network cable plugged in, I get asked for an IP address. It's possible to go back and then select 'No network configuration' (or something), but having a button like 'Continue without configuring the network' right there intially would be better. Though that's probably i) not easy with debconf and ii) too late for sarge anyway 3. As it wasn't immediatly obvious how to reformat a partition with partman, I (perhaps foolishly) decided to delete and re-create /dev/hda6 (on which some other ext2 previously existed). However, the format dialog and subsequent dialogs talked about /dev/hda9 being created/written to, which made me a bit nervous. I finally figured out that partman renumbered the devices (see above partition listing), adding /dev/hda9 at the place of the former /dev/hda6 but calling it /dev/hda9. Oh well, that was a bit unsuspected and I had to change the /etc/fstab of my other partition to fix it. If it is possible the partition numbering should be preserved IMHO. 4. I did not install Grub so I can't tell whether my GNU/Hurd partition has been detected and included correctly, but I could test that another time if needed. 5. On reboot, during the bootup sequence, the framebuffer switched to a different font which yielded about twice as many lines on the console (to my liking). However, as soon as base-config started (or perhaps shortly before), the console became totally corrupted and scrambled. It was possible to figure out that I was looking at the base-config screen and changing virtual consoles worked, but I was not able to read anything. This was with the default 2.4 kernel. I later reinstalled passing 'kernel26' to d-i, which worked fine (thoug

Also when starting the partion step I got some kind of warning about being careful and all that, with two options. I'm sorry I don't remember the specific screen. It was just a bit weird to be getting this since I was installing on a brand new (empty) disk. I understand the need to be careful, but I think that if the disk block containing the partion table is all zero, it's safe to assume that the disk is empty and jump straight to partitioning... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". developer's install (wishlist)
So as a result of this hotplug problem, I've been through the install for sarge a couple of times in the last few days, and this last one was the most painfull install I've ever done (I've been running my own linux box for 9 years now). When it gives you a choice for what kind of machine to install (e.g. desktop, file server, manually select packages, etc.) it would be really nice if one of those choices was "development machine". I selected "desktop" once, and it installed gigabytes of stuff I'm never going to use, and not very much in the way of what I would consider mission-critical tools. For example, it was missing at least the following: gcc manpages-dev make g++ cvs termcap-compat (for running emacs in -nw mode) libc6-dev xlibs-dev Now that's all fine and good if you're up to date with your IT, but when my gcc barfed because it couldn't find stdio.h, it was not immediately obvious to me which package takes care of that (as I've never had any linux install not include libc and friends before). It also took me a good half-hour of research for me to figure out that emacs couldn't run in no-window mode because it needed the termcap compatibility package. In short, it would be nice if the installer had a category that would leave the box set up for happy hacking (preferably without all the office/"productivity" bloat, too). - martin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#259869: time display shows UTC even before UTC question asked

The only difference is that now also the English version says UTC. Kind regards Thorsten Schaefer -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I agree that other installers e.G. the one from Windows 2000 also round the partition size but they don't take full 100 MB slices. So I don't think that this happens just because of a rounding of the partition size. A rounding doesn't explain why the size 1.3 GB show as 1.3 GB but the others mentioned don't. A "downsizing" of exact 0.1 GB (so around 100 MB) is a lot for the explanation with the rounding. If I enter the size 2 GB in MB, so 2048 MB it creates a partition of 2 GB, so I think there exists a bug at this point and I would assume a reopening of this bug report makes sense. Bug#265194: resizing needs to be mentioned more in the partitioning utility
> > No. However I think there are some efforts to add to parted support to > resize ntfs by external library (as this is done with reiserfs). It seems quite unlikely that ntfs resizing will get into GNU parted anytime soon. The GNU parted mailing list shows very little actvity in this regard over the last year or even years. So "ntfstools" (the command line programs) and "libntfs5" (the library) seem much more realistic/quicker routes to get NTFS resizing into d-i. A few interesting points I thought I'd share after some investigation: I also see that d-i includes many .deb files that are not in .udeb format. In the interests of expediating a "killer feature" (IMHO) into Debian Sarge, is it feasible the just include a "non-udeb" ntfstools package in d-i, and make simple system calls to ntfsresize from partman? I've inspected the changelogs for ntfsresize (to see if anything important has changed since 1.9.0 (version in sarge, sid) and 1.9.2 (latest version), and there is one possibly important, functional improvement, introduced in 1.9.1: "NTFS without a volume label can be resized now also". Ummm, I guess that sounds important. Perhaps I should submit this as a wishlist bug against partman... Dustin Harriman Root Shell Computer Support http://rootshell.ca

Not much choice in aptitude invoked from base-config
debian-installer rc1 netinst CD When I choose a few tasks and manual package selection aptitude is started in such a way that the 'Package' option is not available in the view menu. Just 'Preview of package installation'. Is it possible to get back to the package view to select more/different packages, or is the advanced option to skip the base-config step to install packages and then run your package management tool of choice afterwards? The questions asked were good; not too many, there is no 686 kernel on netinst cd. You can use the businesscard CD which is smaller and which gets deb by network. So it will autodetect and install 686 kernel. I think full CD will also have multiple kernel flavors. -- Thomas Poindessous -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There was no DHCP client available (reported separately against the businesscard ISO as well), so I did a static installation. After confirming that the IP address settings were correct, d-i prompted for a host name, defaulting to the fully qualified name that DNS provided for the IP address. If I just hit return at that point, I am sent back to confirming my network settings. Hitting return just pops back and forth between these two screens. To break out of this, I removed everything after the first . in the host name and was sent to select the domain name which had a correct default value. Debian-installer should probably take just the first component of the hostname that it gets back from DNS when creating a default answer to the hostname question, or else it should either ignore the domain name or give a meaningful error message. -- Jay Berkenbilt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.ql.org/q/ --- Received: (at 249677-done) by bugs.debian.org; 13 Aug 2004 00:15:15 + >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Aug 12 17:15:15 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from lakermmtao06.cox.net [68.230.240.33] by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1BvPj0-0007N8-00; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 17:15:14 -0700 Received: from gwendolyn.in.ql.org ([68.100.32.28]) by lakermmtao06.cox.net (InterMail vM.6.01.03.02.01 201-2131-111-104-103-20040709) with ESMTP id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 20:14:38 -0400 Received: from soup.in.ql.org (soup.in.ql.org [10.160.59.17]) by gwendolyn.in.ql.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Debian-1) with ESMTP id i7D0EdQV025571 for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 20:14:39 -0400 Received: from soup.in.ql.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by soup.in.ql.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Debian-5) with ESMTP id i7D0EaNx024467; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 20:14:36 -0400 Received: (from [EMAIL PROTECTED]) by soup.in.ql.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Debian-5) id i7D0EaOt024463; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 20:14:36 -0400 Date: Thu, 12 Aug 2004 20:14:36 -0400 From: Jay Berkenbilt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To:
