[HELP]: apt-setup/tzsetup l10n idea

2004-02-21 Thread Kenshi Muto

Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I'm trying better l10n (localization) around base-config (mainly
apt-setup, tzsetup).

I wrote a patch Bug#233995 against apt-setup.
This patch provides to get country list from iso-codes (if iso-codes
doesn't exist, apt-setup simply shows in English).

I have a question.

1. Everyone, do you accept to install iso-codes for all environment?
   iso-codes needs around 2Mbytes. For better l10n, iso-codes is
really good database. But for native English users, this looks just
   big disk eater.

I'm looking tzsetup, but it seems more challenging...
tzsetup needs l10nize for city list (area list is already l10nized by
tzsetup itself).

tzsetup.templates shows:

Template: tzconfig/select_zone
Type: select
Choices: ${choices}
Description: ...

This means if I simply l10nize choices, $RET value from this debconf
is l10nized string. This is not useful for tzsetup routine.
One of suck idea is to provide like this and set values by tzsetup:

Template: tzconfig/select_zone
Type: select
Choices: ${choices}
Choices-ja.UTF-8: ${choices-l10n}
Choices-...: ${choices-l10n}
 ...
Description: ...

2. Joey, do you have good idea?

Thanks,

[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:

The load installer modules could not detect my IDE drive, but it still works
for installation. And one thing that i am concerning was this debian installer
should have the dual boot option of LILO ( like previous woody ). For example,
we able to boot from all the drive that we had partition. Because after i
installed the debian using the debian installer, the boot option straight boot
to linux, and i lost my windows MBR. Even i tried to re-configure the LILO and
using grub it doesn't work. And for the boot option i would suggest it support
vanilla as well, since my LCD display could properly display the wording during
installation.Thanks.

Well, i was told that this changelog is confusing, and that this tar
behavior is not fixed.

Furthermore, even in the case that the above is false, and that this was
fixed, we would still need to fill RC bugs against all the packages
built with the broken version of tar.

In the meantime, d-i is totally unusable, so it is a rather urgent
matter.

Sven Luther

Suggestion for installation manual

2004-02-21 Thread Reuben Thomas
In section 2.2, "Installation media", it would be good to have a reference
to section 3.7, "Installing Debian GNU/Linux from a Unix/Linux system". I
spent ages trying to work out if this installation method was possible
(perhaps I should have read the table of contents).

It might also be worth mentioning in section 3.7 that this is an
alternative to remote installation. I intend to install Debian on a
machine that has no CD ROM drive and no hard disk this way: by installing
to a USB key on another machine, then plugging the key into the target
machine and using a boot floppy to boot the whole thing. I imagine that
this sort of thing is becoming more common with the advent of affordable
large USB keys and similar media.

Installation report - failed install

2004-02-21 Thread David Fries
Two big problems, libdevmapper1.00 now needs to be installed,
Another system with a 120GB drive requires CONFIG_IDEDISK_STROKE
compiled into the kernel to see the entire drive.

I used the three floppy images (boot, root, net drivers) off the
business card iso from here.
http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/daily/i386/20040220/

Syntax S635MP, SIS635 with VIA Samuel 2 cpu.

I used defaults with the testing option. This installs lilo, but
doesn't install libdevmapper1.00 so when the packages are configured
it returns an error and doesn't proceed.

I was able to manually download the required libdevmapper1.00 package,
replace the nano package with that (so it would get installed). There
must be other problems because it didn't download a kernel, but I
already had a kernel I bult on another system so I could continue to
get the system up and running with.

Getting libdevmapper1.00 to install is required now.

It seems that debootstrap from unstable is already aware of the
libdevmapper1.00 dependency. See

i have change some files to add plip in d-i.
- in agreement with denis barbier, i have change all questions owners

- in ethdetect.sh, i add a 'switch case' for modules which must have a
specific configuration
like plip, ne, and i think other isa cards

i have just test it for i386 and you need to boot in 'expert' mode

I committed the rootskel stuff, but not ethdetect.sh because I am not
familiar with it, someone else needs to review it.
Thanks.

I've done several installs with the Feb 19th netinst CD, and no problems
were seen. Is something keeping the CD working despite this breakage?

Waldi, when can we expect an updated busybox-cvs?

Configure and Mount Parititions question

2004-02-21 Thread Steve Fisher
Hello,

My name is Steve and I am using the Beta 2 debian-installer.

I have two hard drives on my system - one drive contains a Windows FAT32
partition, the other drive contains the Linux partitions I set up
through the Partition a hard drive step. I've configured those Linux
partitions with a filesystem type (and a swap partition) and where I
want the partition mounted.

The thing that concerns me is that the Configure and Mount partitions
screen shows my other hard drive with the FAT32 partition. My concern
is that because the FAT32 partition is listed, the installer will
recreate a FAT32 partition on that disk and overwrite the data I have
there. Is the installer actually going to do that, or is it just there
to say that the FAT32 partition will be mounted and added to /etc/fstab?

I could not find an answer in the Beta 2 or cvs INSTALLATION_HOWTO.
Should a screen show up before actually creating and mounting the
partitions that goes something like this?

[screen]
The following filesystems will be created (WARNING! All data on these
partitions will be destroyed!):
[Linux partition 1]
[Linux partition 2]
[Linux partition 3]
[Linux partition 4]

The following partitions will be mounted:
[FAT32 partition]
[Linux partition 1]
[Linux partition 2]
[Linux partition 3]
[Linux partition 4]
Ready to create file systems and mount partitions?

Go Back Yes No
[/screen]
If I saw this screen I would have no worries about my FAT32 partition.

Thanks,
Steve

Hello,

After solving problems with
"awk" and "sleep" in netinst cd,
I still have a problem with lilo dependencies-
it reports -
"Package libdevmapper 1.00 is not installed"

It's a bug or a feature :).

Bug#234136: autopartkit: Using /media/cdrom instead of /cdrom

2004-02-21 Thread Santiago Vila
Package: autopartkit
Version: 0.79

I have been asked to add /media in base-files to follow the FHS standard,
which I have just done, but of course adding /media will not make our
system more FHS compliant unless we actually use /media/cdrom instead
of /cdrom and such.

I believe this patch is the only thing required for /media/cdrom to be
used by the install program, since APT relies on the information
written in /etc/fstab.

Please drop me a note whenever this patch or something similar is
applied (or simply reassign this bug back to the base-files package)
so that I can safely stop creating /floppy and /cdrom in base-files.

(I suspect that I could already do this, if, as it seems, this code
runs even before base-files and the other base packages are unpacked).

Thanks.

Patch follows:

Everything works fine downloading the installer components. Then I get the
error:
"Base system installation error"
debootstrap program exited with an error (return value 1).

In /target/var/log/debootstrap.log I find this:

dpkg: error processing lilo (--configure):

Setting up libgnutls7 (0.8.12-5) ...

and then, in the very end of the log file even I find:

Errors were encountered while processing:

I tried to install LILO from the menu on my lun0/disc. Freezing the output with Scroll
Lock I notized this:

modprobe: failed to load module usbserial
Trying to enable the frame buffer..
insmod: init_module: vesafb: No such device or address
modprobe: failed to load module vesafb
modprobe: failed to load module vga16fb

I get no confirmation that LILO is installed. (Am I supposed to?)
Maybe this is not related, but lsmod shows that all the mentioned modules but vesafb
are loaded. modprobe vesafb fails:

Using /lib/modules/2.4.22-1-386/kernel/drivers/video/vesafb.o
insmod: init_module: vesafb: No such device or address
modprobe: failed to load module vesafb

I hope that this can help.

I booted from a current CD in bochs. mount shows two old initrds still
mounted:

/dev/root.old on /initrd/initrd
/dev/root on /initrd

They look like substantially the same initrd to me, from their sizes and
content.

I fixed a similar problem with booting from floppy in init.bootflopy in
rootskel 0.47. I found that to fully unmount the initrd, I needed to
unmount initrd before doing the pivot_root. Perhaps the same or a
similar problem persists in the regular init used by CDs, though I
don't understand where the second initrd copy comes from for CDs.

I'm not in a postition to make CD images, so I cannot try it, but you
might try adding an umount /initrd before the pivot_root in sbin/init.

Kernel Update Failure

2004-02-21 Thread Vuulf

Hi There.

    I
have been trying to update my Kernel to 2.4.x from 2.2.20 (Woody). I edited
/etc/lilo.conf to and added initrd, etc, and the computer boots will boot to X,
however after updating the Kernel is lose most of my drivers including my
network card and I get a massive list of unresolved deps in the boot screen. Is
there any advise you can give me? I tried searching Debian.org, but the search
engine is either broken or simply doesn't work in Windows. Any help would be
appreciated.

    Rob

PS: Also if you
could point me to the right email address to resolve an issue where I cannot
open Konqeror or other DCOP based applications in KDE - I have checked KDE for
support and only a dial-up issue exists. Since I don't have modems in anything
and have high speed cable, I don't think this is the issue. Interestingly enough
this KDE error shows up on a Celeron as well as on my old MPSparcSS10
architecture. Thank you again for your time.

/var/log/base-config.log contains:
  /usr/sbin/apt-setup: line 171: [: : integer expression expected
  ngettext: missing arguments

This means that PACKAGE_COUNT is empty (but I do not yet know why),
and thus MESSAGE is also empty.

Installing Debian using debian-sarge-netinst.iso (powerpc)

2004-02-21 Thread sebyte
Hi all.

First of all, apologies if this is not the correct mailing list for a newbie-ish question. (I have done some reading! ). As debian-sarge-netinst.iso is under development and I am trying to use it to install Debian on a PowerPC, (Apple G4), I thought debian-powerpc and debian-boot were probably the best places to ask.

First of all, I'm trying to create a dual-boot system. MacOSX in already installed and I have downloaded the 'debian-sarge-netinst.iso' disk image and burned it to CD. I doubt very much there is a problem with the CD. It is my understanding of the precise partitioning and mount configuration needed, (in fact, the whole process! ), which is lacking I'm afraid.

I have partitioned my hard drive, (using Apple's Disk Utility), as follows:

PartitionVolume nameFS typeSize Mount point / intended use

3 DebRoot HFS+ 2 GB / (boot partition, i.e., /bin, /sbin, /dev, /etc and /lib)
5 DebSwap HFS+ 1 GB /swap
7 DebRest HFS+ 9 GB the rest ( /boot, /tmp, /var, /usr, /home, e.t.c )
9 DebOSX UFS 11 GB Debian/OSX file exchange volume
11 MacOSX HFS+ 12 GB MacOSX volume

The logic behind this partitioning scheme is to give 12 GB to Debian, 12 GB to MacOSX and the remainder to be a shared file exchange volume.

So, booting up from the CD, everything works fine, (language selection, hardware detection, DHCP configuration, e.t.c.), and I am duly presented with the above partition map and invited to create the filesystems, (I selected 'ext2' for partition 3 and 7, and 'swap' for partition 5), and configure my mount points, (I selected '/' for partition 3, '/swap' for partition 5 and left partition 7 unmounted as there doesn't seem to be a way of choosing more than one directory per partition). The installation then proceeds fine, (packages are read from disk and installed), until finally I am presented with the following message:

"No bootstrap partition found. There must be an 800K Apple_Bootstrap partition named 'bootstrap' of type 'Apple_Bootstrap' before you can continue", or words to that effect.

Is this message not referring to partition 1, (which shows up on the partition map but isn't called 'bootstrap')? I really don't want to repartition my hard disk, (and reinstall MacOSX), again!

Any help much much much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

sebyte

P.S. Are there any good reasons for choosing ext2 filesystems over ext3, or vice versa?

I have uploaded a rebuilt version, so close the bug if it fixes it.

Comments/Problems:
Originally I had a stupid TDK burner I was using to boot the system,
but it kept complaining about not being able to find the CD after the
installer had loaded, so I swapped in a different CDROM and it worked
fine
This installer is soo much nicer than the stable installer, except I
hate aptitude as much as I hate dselect and always end up using apt-get
to install what I want instead.
For whatever reason when I tried to set this system up with a stable CD
it ran really slow, using this testing CD made it install nice and run
fast.

Install logs and other status info is available in
/var/log/debian-installer/.
