We are also looking for a good way to have the various mkfs-es provide
som progress output to use for the progress bar. Basically, what we
need to do is come up with some common, easy-to-parse format which can
then be massaged and fed to cdebconf. Currently, we display a blue
screen while the mkfs is running and this is clearly unacceptable when
a full mkfs may take many minutes.

kbd-chooser override disparity

2003-07-28 Thread Debian Installer
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the
override file for the following file(s):

kbd-chooser_0.24_i386.udeb: package says priority is standard, override says extra.

Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think
the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package
so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the
override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why.

Hi,

here are 2 patchs. The first one corrects a small error. The second one
makes kbd-chooser handling only console-keymaps-* files. In
maplist_parse_file:374, there is a strlen("console-keymaps-").

thanks for your work.

Debconf vs. graphical installer

2003-07-28 Thread Sebastian Ley
Hi,

here we go to add some discussion on the never ending topic of a
graphical installer. The current implementation of the gtk-frontend
for cdebconf is highly unsatisfactory. Because of the limited debconf
capabilities it is a mere question asker which is not what one would
expect from a graphical installer.

It does not make sense to offer a graphical installer which is more or
less identical to the newt frontend. We have to discover a way to make
use of the capabilities[1] of a more sophisticated frontend while not
being to intrusive with the current design of d-i.

I had some discussions about that with some people and there were some
vague ideas but until now there was no agreement of how it should be
done. So I would like to raise the discussion here, to collect ideas
and perhaps come to a solution.

Sebastian

Do you have time to fix at Debian bug #203056 and #203058?

2003-07-28 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Hello

You are listed as the maintainer of the Debian package e2fsprogs. The
latest uploaded version (1.34-1) break the new Debian installation
debian-installer. The bugs are reported into BTS as #203056 and
#203058. Do you have time to look into these problems, and fix them
as soon as possible? We d-i developers would appreciate it a lot. :)

If you can't fix them soon, we will add a workaround (linking
/bin/ldconfig -> /bin/true) until it is fixed. It would be better to
get a proper fix from you. :)

Does /target/var/cache/apt/archives/debconf_1.0_32_all.deb
exist? Even if it does, maybe it got corrupted; you could
delete it and try again, it should be replaced.

The current version seem to run bterm and display also characters
outside of ISO-8859-1. Should this bug be closed?

I think the message displayed below should be printed even when the
debconf priority is "critical" because it can (will) break the system,
well, not the system you are installing, but the installed system.

According to debconf-devel(7) for me it's clear:
critical:
Items that will probably break the system without user
intervention.

Are you sure you want to automatically partition the disk ?
This will destroy the partition table on all disks in the machine.
REPEAT: THIS WILL WIPE CLEAN ALL HARD DISKS IN THE MACHINE!
If you have important data that are not backed up, you may want to
stop now in order to do a backup. In that case, you'll have to
 restart the installation later.

When trying to display UTF-8 characters in the console, it seems that
only the ASCII and ISO-8859-1 characters are displayed. Chinese and
russian characters are represented as white squares. See the attached
screenshot for an example.

We need to find a way to load extra glyphs into the linux console.

Bug#203245: installation: buffer overflow when choosing a hostnqme (install option : network)

2003-07-28 Thread Robert CHERAMY
Package: installation
Version: unavailable; reported 2003-07-28
Severity: normal

(sarge-i386-netinst.iso downloaded today)

I choosed to install with the "net" option. While giving the hostname, I
tried to give a domain name (by the way I did not found a way to give
it) by entering it in the hostname : "topaze.bougon.org".
I got the message telling me the name was incorrect, but after that, the
default proposed hostname looked like a buffer overflow to me :
[default = debian xze.bougon.org "*
go]>

* is a white square but I can't reproduce it...

Hope it helps...

Bug#203250: installation: Not ASCII characters are not printed correctly

2003-07-28 Thread Robert CHERAMY
Package: installation
Version: unavailable; reported 2003-07-28
Severity: normal

I downloaded the autobuild sarge-i386-netinst.iso today.

I choose installation in french language ; while "Partition a hard
drive" (it is not translated in French by the way), the message
Veuillez choisir l'un de ces disques, pour y crACer des partitions.
came by. The message should be
Veuillez choisir l'un de ces disques, pour y créer des partitions.

I think there is perhaps an unicode printing problem here.

Hope it helps,

Bug#203254: installation: Installer segfaults while downloading base system

2003-07-28 Thread Robert CHERAMY
Package: installation
Version: unavailable; reported 2003-07-28
Severity: normal

[I downloaded autobuilded sarge-i386-netinst.iso today]

While installing the base system, the installer made a Segmentation
fault while downloading
http://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/debian/pool/main/c/console-common/console-common_0.7.22_all.deb
I checked, the file exists on the server.

There were many unsucessful downloads before, as
http://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/debian/pool/main/u/util-linux/bsdutils_2.11z-4_i386.deb
But I checked, and the file exists and can be downloaded by http.

I'm unsure what I can do to provide more information. Hope it helps
anyway.

Cheers,

What do you mean "net" option?

The domain question is asked at priority medium. I'm not sure why, maybe
it should be higher? "high" at least, perhaps?

This sure is a bug, I just fixed it in CVS.

In the boot prompt, I choosed net instead of the default installation :
boot: net

creating own debian distro

2003-07-28 Thread Omar Armas

I want to make a customized debian distribution targeted to security. I
know Adamantix exist, but I want to make it a little easier.
My idea is that one be able to just insert the boot disk and the system
installs a minimum of packets, close ports, ask for NAT and transparent
proxy, install and configure snort-mysql, web reports, webmin, etc.

Where can I find documentation to make such a project? I'm beggining to
develop under Debian, until now I have only customized some .deb's and
made a net-install disk with 2.4.21, but haven't found info to make
something like Bonzai but with another focus.

Also I don't know whether this list or debian-devel be the correct place
to this question.

Hope you can orient me.

Thanks,

Omar

I don't know what should be done with all the 'installation' bugs. I
guess the proper thing is to clone&close, but that feels a bit silly.
One Of These Days, we should go through all the 'installation' bugs and
see which have been fixed.
