I just downloaded the 7 or 8 ISOs from an site in Great Britain and made an attempt to
install. You should know, purely from a mechanical view, that after installing the
packages from the first CD the machine simply went to a black screen and stayed there.
I had no idea of what might be going on. When hitting Enter after waiting for a
message of some kind to appear, the machine finally asked for the second CD, but you'd
never have known where you were in the process until you hit Enter. That surely cannot
be what you intend.

That notwithstanding, I could not get X-Window to install, a rather important matter.
You have a very attractive work product in Debian 3.0. Its a shame I can't use it; I'd
like to.

The installer uses mklibs.py for library reduction. It sounds
like you want a version without reduced libraries, although that
might not fit on a floppy anymore. But to get it, I would say you
would need to get the source for boot-floppies

apt-get source boot-floppies

and then build it after figuring out how to switch off the reduction.

Just my .02

Contrary to the documentation, there is no "ide" folder in

ATA 100 Hard Disk Problem

2002-08-12 Thread Christian Heller

Hi,

I've got a new ATA100 hard disk and tried to install Debian 3.0 Woody
from new CD-ROMs I just bought. Unfortunately, the boot process doesn't
get any further than the messages below. The ATA seems to be recognized
and supported but not so the partition table. My hardware (only drives) is:
hda: WD, HDD
hdb: LS-120
hdc: Pioneer, DVD-ROM
hdd: -
hde: Maxtor, ATA100, 60 GB, HDD

--- 8< ---
...
hda: WDC ...
hdb: LS-120 VER5 ...
hde: Maxtor 4d060H3, ATA DISK drive
ide0 at ...
...
hde: 120069936 sectors (61476MB) w/2048kiB Cache, CHS=119117/16/63, UDMA(100)
...
Partition check:
hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4
hde: unknown partition table
--- 8< ---

Well, it doesn't go any futher. I tried all four kernels offered at the
boot prompt but only bf24 seemed to recognize the ATA controller.
What's wrong?

Thanks,
Christian

ATA 100 Hard Disk Problem, No 2

2002-08-12 Thread Christian Heller

Me once more. I've just found this link:
http://www.geocities.com/ender7007/

It explains some things but doesn't tell how to manage the kind
of boot problem I have. In section 6 they write about Debian.
In section 7 (SuSE) they mention that it also fails with a partition
check.
