Bug#156308: boot-floppies: installation on NFS root doesn't work

2002-08-11 Thread Paul Stoeber

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.23

CD image: debian-30r0-powerpc-binary-1_NONUS.iso
MD5: 59437e412f1779b603dca0a677b20e82

Note on version number: /sbin/dbootstrap identifies itself as belonging
to boot-floppies 3.0.23 in the opening "Release Notes", but the list
of package sources

MD5: 2162652a5bd38112f2c6f8c0bb4403d6
says it's version 3.0.22. Huh?

My machine (iBook Firewire) doesn't have any mass storage devices except
a CD-ROM drive, and in this test nothing is plugged into the USB or

After passing the yaboot prompt I have the following installation dialog

Bug#156334: boot-floppies: [powerpc] Installation of kernel fails when path to kernel contains spaces

2002-08-11 Thread Chris Tillman

Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2002-08-11
Severity: important

Mac users often times download items to their desktop. If the debian
archive folders are downloaded to the desktop, they actually reside in
/Desktop\ Folder/ . In this situation, the installer correctly finds
the archive mirror files, but the installation fails after the user
agrees that it is the right path.

After moving the archive files out of /Desktop\ Folder/ on to the root
of the partition, the install proceeds normally. I believe the spaces
need to be escaped in the code, if they appear in the pathname. There
must be a nice routine to do this in C, I don't know... but it looks
like the place to fix it up is around line 1506 in choose_medium.c.

Bug#156337: boot-floppies: Console 2 message doesn't appear

2002-08-11 Thread Chris Tillman

Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2002-08-11
Severity: minor

There is a helpful message mentioning the nano-tiny editor
which is available on the installer ramdisk, in

scripts/rootdisk/prototype/etc/profile

However, this message no longer appears in console 2.
Instead an unhelpful one-line message appears.

| I would really like the slang frontend working. And I would really
| like a way to test the installer without booting it from CD. Please
| try to get 'make demo' running with the slang frontend. :-)

enabling it in the udeb build and running make demo seems to work fine
for me, at least. And you want to turn off debconf debugging.

however, it won't fit on a floppy after you enable it -- we'll have to
work on that one, it seems.

(Or it might -- seems like I forgot to stop linking in the table
library to rfc822db; instead of the meagre 1k, I got rid of about
16k. Weee.)

Re: cdebconf state

2002-08-11 Thread Tollef Fog Heen

* Tollef Fog Heen

| *shrug*. If somebody does it without breaking rfc822db, please go
| ahead.

I was bored today, so I rewrote it using tsearch and friends. Seems
to work fine so far, and that shaved about 1k off the rfc822db
library. (And it won't bloat the image, since tsearch et al are
already used in main-menu and udpkg.)

However, I had to break binary compatibility once again, else it
wouldn't work. According to the man page for tsearch, that is how it
is supposed to work. Silly stuff. (The change is putting tag as the
first item in the struct template and struct question). This means
that I will bump the dependency stuff to libcdebconf0.3 and everything
linking against libcdebconf will need to be rebuilt. Sorry. :(

However, it seems to me like cdebconf should be about ready to be
uploaded now and we'll be able to get further with the rest of the
installation system.
