bootfloppies on powerpc prep

2002-04-29 Thread Rubin

Hi all,

has anybody succesfully tested a boot of debian woody through
bootfloppies on powerpc prep?

I've succesfully booted the last diskset from testing on a Bull Estrella
Series 300 (motorola powerstack 4000 II) but it hangs on initialization
of the Symbios Logic 53C825A which at init, keeps resetting itself into
oblivion.

I'm also suspecting I might need a bootloader instead of just the
openfirmware (which is a FirmWorks OpenFirmware 1.2 RH11 - got it from
Bull); any ideas about that? yaboot seems to load but doesn't do
anything afterwards (kernels won't boot) and I have not been able to
find a binary version of quik which might do the trick.

As a side note it looks like the kernel does not pick up any boot
parameters given at the openfrmware command-prompt.

Also note that the install.txt on the ftp.debian.org is very out of date
(1999, scarce details about bootfloppy based install). If I get
succesful with this (as in: actually get debian powerpc to run on it) I
would like to rewrite this document.

Hope to hear from fellow prep-hackers soon!

Rubin.

Update: bogl complains about unknown screen type 2 with both 16 and 256
color display on my Falcon. Mono

The pixel format might be the problem:

include/linux/fb.h:#define FB_TYPE_PACKED_PIXELS0
include/linux/fb.h:#define FB_TYPE_INTERLEAVED_PLANES   2

is precisely what I get for mono or color modes, respectively.

Packed pixel format is in use for lots of other hardware so I'd assume it
is supported in some way?

Normally I'd say go to packages.debian.org/quik -- but I know it
doesn't show up because the package archives are i386-centric. If
you'd like, I could email you one. It's much more finicky that yaboot,
though, and normally needs to install a boot block from inside linux.

I've fixed this. Does this also need to be done for
parmfile.example1:

 dasd=192-191 ro hostname=debian.domain.com ip=192.168.0.42
 peer=192.168.0.1 dns=192.168.0.2 netinterface=iucv1
 netmodule=netiucv iucv=tcpip:gateway

and parmfile.example2:

 dasd=192-191 ro hostname=debian.domain.com ip=192.168.0.42
 netmask=255.255.255.0 gateway=192.168.0.1 dns=192.168.0.2
 netmodule=lcs chandev=noauto;lcs0,0x1000,0x1001,0,1,0

?

Could you please provide a patch, as I have no idea how this
should work?

Nope, I don't think bogl supports packed pixels at all. Christian and I
discussed this before if I remember right.

Oh Yes!!! ALT+F1, sorry the mistake, i was very tired. :)
I got it after selecting 'Initialize a Partition'.

I used the bf2.4 flavour. Thank you to Chris Tillman and Eduard Bloch for the
tips.

I'll try these tonight. I'm reporting soon.

Jeez, how dumb am I? I was thinking of planar pixels. Packed pixels
should indeed be fine.

Assuming that it isn't possible to fix bogl for whatever reason, the
best option would be to write a small helper program that does

fd = open("/dev/fb0", O_RDWR);
ioctl(fd, FBIOGET_FSCREENINFO, &fix);
close(fd);
if (fix->type == BAD) exit(1);
exit(0);

and add logic to /sbin/udbootstrap to invoke this thing and make it fall
back to non-UTF8 mode in the bad cases.

Bug#143404: More information

2002-04-29 Thread Meelis Roos

I just had the same problem with my Digital Celebris GL 5133 ST.

SYSLINUX makes the floppy drive emit strange noise and the boot fails
(debian old & new, redhat, slackware 8.1-current). Openbsd floppy boot
crashes with protection error. Freebsd & DOS boot fine.

Swapped 3 floppy drives, 2 floppy cables, 5 floppy disks and 2 computers
of the same type. Still the same! Looks like an incompatibility between
syslinux and digital celebris BIOS.

I copied the kernel to raw floppy (with dd), rdev it to /dev/fd0 and got
the installer to work.

Still, after the install it insists of looking for a root device at
00:00 and fails. It seems to completely ignore what I pass to
root=/dev/blaah. root is on /dev/sda2, scsi adapter and sda1 and sda2
partitions are detected just fine but somehow it insists on using 00:00
as the root device (missing filesystem drivers?). Still digging at it.

Yes, it can't hurt. These numbers are usually changed by the administrator
to match the system being installed, but a more correct example is helpful.
