Which means it's only brltty which is running, and orca is not managing to start, which is surprising for a mere power failure. You can try to make sure that /etc/xdg/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/80_orca-dm-wrapper.conf still contains [SeatDefaults] greeter-wrapper=/usr/bin/orca-dm-wrapper as documented in https://wiki.debian.org/accessibility#lightdm_accessibility Samuel

Well, possibly when it's related to accessibility, but here it's really not, and thus you won't get expertise on the matter from debian-accessibility@. I have thus Cc-ed debian-boot@, since that's where expertise on the matter is. Normally, debian-boot should be able to help non-sighted people too. > I tried to install it on an unused laptop I'm having, using the iso > downloaded from this torrent: > https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/10.4.0+nonfree/amd64/bt-dvd/firmware-10.4.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso.torrent > > It started wonderfully, speech came up immediately and the installation went > smoothly until it tried to connect to the Internet. I don't know more about the potential tricks with iwlwifi, thus leaving up to debian-boot. Samuel

Re: Can't start lightdm.
Hi Samuel, Well, lightdm and Mate started normally when I rebooted the machine about a day later. ODD! Next time something like that hapens I will try systemctl restart lightdm of course as root. Thanks for the info. I don't know, since it's only on the TODO-list of debian-accessibility for now. Better ask the debian live team. debian-accessibility has no particular knowledge on how the live images get built, run etc. Samuel

I just tried again with a 10.4 firmware iso, without problem. Is Orca running at all as a user in the session? Samuel
Re: problem with enabling orca in newest debian
Hi Orca talks in the login screen, but if oulseaudio is rubning, when you log in, orca becomes silent. In my case, I've tested it a couple of times and the problem is pulse. I don't understand why Debian is beeing released again and again with the same problem. Please, when using speech syntesis installation mode, run pulse as root by default. > El 18 jul 2020, a las 19:22, Adri Orjales > escribió: > > > Hi > Try disabling pulseaudio, as specified on debian accessibility page > https://wiki.debian.org/accessibility > Cheers > > >>> El 18 jul 2020, a las 19:12, Nsoft the Rapper oficjalnie >>> escribió: >>> >> >> Hi, i am using 10.4, so the newest version available. >> I downloaded an .iso for i386 architecture with firmware drivers. >> Regards. >> >> >> sob., 18 lip 2020, 19:04 użytkownik Samuel Thibault >> napisał: >>> Hello, >>> >>> Nsoft the Rapper oficjalnie, le mer. 15 juil. 2020 19:53:21 +0200, a ecrit: >>> > i decided to install debian on it. >>> > I installed it normally, and when it booted, i logged in. >>> > On login screen, i am able to hear orca, but it don't wanna talk after >>> > logging >>> > in. >>> >>> Which version of Debian did you install? >>> >>> Samuel

Is the lightdm-started pulseaudio still running in that case? (that said, in my tests it is, but that is not preventing from the user-started pulseaudio to be working) (note that it's not an "orca becomes silent": the orca running in the user session is not the same as the orca running in the lightdm session). > In my case, I've tested it a couple of times and the problem is pulse. Which version of Debian did you test this with? > I don't understand why Debian is beeing released again and > again with the same problem. Because nobody is actually working on discussing with maintainers of the pulseaudio stack to find an acceptable solution. > Please, when using speech syntesis installation mode, run pulse as > root by default. That'd open way too many security concerns, since pulseaudio is *not* meant to be run as root, and thus doesn't contain all the corresponding required security cautions. Samuel

RE: Installation Issue
Thank you very much Samuel, I really didn’t know about Debian Boot. I asked on the Debian User list instead, and a few very nice people kindly sent me suggestions which finally allowed me to finish the installation. I’d like to apologise once more for not knowing about the impressive number of mailing lists before posting here. I’ll only ask about accessibility here in the future, now I’m starting to understand how everything is being organised. Best regards and thank you one last time.
