[Debconf-team] Failing laptop
Hi, Unfortunately, my laptop has recently had its X crashing badly (needs a reboot to be able to start X again). It's totally unpredictable (it can work for days without a problem or crash multiple times in an hour); I'm suspecting a hardware problem. I've tried upgrading stuff (kernel, X, X video driver) but with no luck. I am giving a talk on Tuesday and I'd prefer not to risk it. I was wondering if the orga team has a spare laptop I could borrow for an hour. FWIW, all I need is a PDF viewer. Sorry for any inconvience caused. [Debconf-team] Debian enterprise/infrastructure track

As discussed on IRC, I'd be happy to be a track coordinator for an infrastructure/enterprise track, similar to the one we had back in New York. I generally prefer the term "infrastructure" rather than "enterprise", although I see the point that a "Debian Infrastructure" title might be mislead to mean "Debian*'s* infrastructure", especially due to my position in the project. "Debian large-scale deployments" would also be a nice, more lengthy title. I think I'll let the team have the final word :-) Daniel explained that part of the job is inviting people to give a relevant talk. I can't think of many people I could poke, so if anyone on the list has ideas, I'll be happy to hear them and follow them up. Oh, and for full disclosure: I was intending, and still am, to ask for partial sponsorship for my (quite expensive) trip; this has nothing to do with that and the two are not dependant on each other. I'm looking often at the registered talks but unfortunately I'm not sure there's enough to have a dedicated track. I can see 3-4 related to virtualization, plus another one that may be related to a general large infrastructure discussion. I haven't heard back from the people I pinged either, so I'm not really sure how to proceed. Do you want to wait until the end of the CfP in case the situation changes or do you need to start scheduling things ASAP? So, I re-read Moray's analysis from about a month ago¹. The numbers there are attendee counts, not accomodation counts, so they're off but I think we can apply some guesswork. Looking at that, it seems that the actual attendee count was over 325 for DebConfs 7 and 11 and 306 for DebConf10. So it doesn't look too bad, although it's Switzerland, which is very centrally located so it'll probably have more attendees than Cáceres or Bosnia. However, what's more worrying is that blog post's second graph, the "number of confirmed attendees", which has been 455, 415 and 450 for DebConfs 7, 10 and 11. Based on that, I think we can expect *at least* a similar count for DebConf13. I also doubt that >= 100 of those people will register with alternate accomodations, esp. when it's far away from the venue as you say. (all of the above are statistics of a small sample and guesswork, so I might be way off; I'd be interested in other people's analyses) Hence it seems to me that the only way you're going to pull this off is by overbooking until the very last minute and basically saying "we have more reconfirmed people than beds, but we've seen a trend of a 85% actual/confirmed attendees ratio in the past, so we're not expecting all of them to actually arrive". IMO, it might work but it sounds very risky. Taking risks is part of the organization process though, so if you're willing to risk it, I have absolute faith in you. I also remember someone saying that he also roamed around the hotel with his phone, altough I don't recall exactly who. Oh and FWIW, I wasn't using DebConf's VoIP but my own, but this wouldn't make a difference, it was one big single network. [Debconf-team] Update on sponsorship?
Joerg, Is it too much to ask for an update on what's going on with the sponsorship money? I'm a sponsoree, a member of the organization team and a member of the sponsorship committee; you would think I'd know what's going on and yet I have absolutely no clue. I think it's reasonable to ask (and get an answer!) for more information about the status and the delay. The fact that we don't have meetings anymore shouldn't be an excuse for not being transparent about this. You obviously have some spare Debian time, enough to propose non-critical changes to the project. Please try to devote some of it on informing your peers about important stuff such as this... Well, at least I would like Joerg (or whoever else is involved in this) to inform the *team* of any updates and even take some input if decisions have to be made. Really, is it too much to ask?
