dates of debconf 18 fixed ?

2018-03-06 Thread Ralf Treinen
Hello,

sorry if I missed a message. I just wanted to know whether the dates
of debconf 18 are fixed and certain? There are currently interesting
prices for air tickets to Taipeh, so I reckon this is a good time
to book.

I suppose Sat, July 28, will be the arrival day for those who just
want to attend debconf? And that talks are planned to continue until
Sun, August 5?

I am also interested in such an option.

accomodation in Hsinchu downtown?

2018-06-19 Thread Ralf Treinen
Hi,

is there any advice for people who are considering taking accomodation
downtown? In particular,
- can you recommend any booking sites for Taiwan? Rakuten used to be
quite good for several Asian countries, but these days they only seem
  to cover Japan.
- what are the options for public transport between downtown and the
  campus?

we have settled for the Forte Hotel Hsinchu. Central location downtown,
close to the railway station, and on the bus line recommended on the
wiki for transport to the conference site. Booked via Hotels.com. Expect
around 60 euros per night if you book without breakfast.

local transport: airport -> Hsinchu downtown

2018-07-23 Thread Ralf Treinen
Hello,

can you please give some advice for those who want to go from Taoyuan
airport directly to the area of the downtown train station (TRA), for
instance because they have accomodation in that area? Is it
possible/advisable to take a train that goes directly to Hsinchu
TRA station? Otherwise, if one takes HSR, there seems to be a shuttle
train from Hsinchu HSR to Hsinchu TRA. Can one pay this train with
EasyCard? Or do you recommend to take a bus?

the wiki page says:

  Taiwan Customs Regulations

You can import up to TBD kilograms of cheese per person.

The variable TBD seems to be not initialized. Are we at least sure that
the value is not null?

Maybe it would help if a speaker could ask explicitely to have a
chairperson who will act as a moderator if necessary? This is less
visible than just not allowing for questions at all. And knowing to
have a moderator by your side (figuratively speaking) is certainly
reassuring.

I remember a business trip to Jerualem in 1998. When travelling back we
had to queue at the airport for our security screening for at least one
hour (if my recollection is right) and then I had to go through a
security screening, with a nosy officer asking all kind of
questions about which places I had visited, with whom I have talked
(we had done a private trip to the westbank the day before the business
meeting), asking me to show her my name badge from the conference I
had visited, asking to show her the slides of my presentation, and
asking me to explain to her some parts of my presentation. If I remember
right I did not have a laptop with me during that trip.

I have never been treated like that at an airport, and I am not
looking forward to repeat that experience.

so that means we meet at the entrance of the university campus, and not
at the hotel as it is indicated on the wiki?
