[Debconf-discuss] parking for the week of debconf

2010-06-08 Thread David Bremner

Hi All;

I'm planning on driving down to Debconf from the east coast of Canada. I
need somewhere to park the rental car for a week. I don't need access
to the car during the week, but I would like it back at the end of
debconf. I can pay something ($100 for the week?) for parking, but I
don't really know where to start. Any ideas, hints, or kind offers are
welcome. We'll probably be bit tired after driving 9 hours or so, so
ideally it should not be too much of an ordeal to get from where we
leave the car to Columbia (the university, not the country).

[Debconf-discuss] possible smart card group buy?

2010-07-09 Thread David Bremner

Is there any interest in a gpg smartcard group buy?

   http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/Debconf10/Unofficial/SmartCardBuy

I think it doesn't make too much sense for me to order things to Canada
from Germany, and then take them across the border to the US; for one
thing, it is very last-minute, and just getting things to Canada could
take a couple weeks. But for a small order I would be willing.

They do look nice (personally I already have a couple of readers, so I'm
more interested in sticking with that form factor). Kernel-concepts
lists them at 49EUR; I didn't see a volume discount, but maybe somebody
with better German can suss that out.

After some consultation on IRC, I started an Unofficial/Talks hierarchy
on the debconf wiki for just this purpose. For the BoF's I am
coordinating on notmuch [1] and mathematical software [2], I encourage
people to edit the pages and or/send me email/IRC comments (

Err yes. The BoF is official, but the wiki page is not. Blame

[Debconf-discuss] PhD student in parallel/distributed computing sought

2010-08-06 Thread David Bremner

Hi All;

I missed the job BoF at debconf, so I'm taking the liberty of forwarding
an ad for a student. I'm at Debconf10 in NYC so feel free to track me
down in the next couple days, or send me email.

--

Candidates are sought for a 3 year funded Ph.D. student position
(subject to availability of funds, 1 year with renewal subject to
satisfactory performance and further availability of funds). The
position is to start September 1 2010, or as soon as possible
afterwards.

The selected candidate will design, implement, and experimentally
evaluate an open source framework for /parallel tree search/. Tree
search applications such as /SAT/ and /integer programming/ are
characterized by their use of divide-and-conquer to find a solution,
and by the use of a shared knowledge pool to accelerate the search.

Candidates should have a Master's degree in Computer Science or
equivalent. We are particularly interested in candidates with
background in one or more of the following:

- High Performance Computing
- Parallel Programming, particularly distributed memory models.
- SAT solvers
- Discrete Optimization
- Linux/Unix Systems Programming
- Batch systems and cluster computing

Candidates are encouraged to contact

    David Bremner

with a resumé and unofficial post-secondary transcripts.

The sources are in the debconf-data svn. I could make a collab-maint

I (and Cheryl) would like to visit Sarajevo for a few days after

Hi;

I have reason to believe that several people are travelling to Sarajevo
after debconf, but so far on the wiki I see Guido on Saturday and Cheryl
and I on Sunday. I'd be happy to (a) know when the buses leave

down and (maybe) some sight-seeing activities.

After talking about the conversion for several years on mail and IRC,
with a little bit of preparation the Debian Perl team managed to convert
almost 2000 packages from a monolithic subversion repository into
individual git repositories. Being together in Banja Luka made it
possible to fix the few wrinkles that arose, and to develop some new
tools to keep the team working smoothly.

I started a table on

The smart cards are EUR15-20 and the readers are EUR20 -> 60. I have a
couple SCR-335 (EUR35) that I have no complaints about. Other
possibilities include the GPF crypto stick in place of card+reader.

The old city (altstadt) is about 20 minutes away on the 31 bus; I got
off at Marstallstraße. No transfers are necessary, and it seems to run
every 10 minutes. There are many restaurants, and some shopping within
an easy walk.

I can recommend in particular walking up to the Schloss. The view at

itself. There seemed to be no problem with people hanging out on the
