Hello,

I am a Montrealer.

I think you want to say Sherbrooke *East*.

Not sure that there is a 3000 Sherbrooke West, but there might be.

[Debconf-discuss] (past) DebconfShirt Photo - bring your shirts!

2017-07-30 Thread Rhonda D'Vine
  Hi there!

We plan to have a special photo taken again this year too: A photo with
all the (attendee) shirts from previous debconfs, one from each year.
For coordinating this I've put up a page in the wiki about it:
https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf17/DebconfShirts

Please add your name in there and put an X into the columns for the
previous debconf shirts you brought along, if you are willing to
participate in this special photo. In case you don't want to be in the
photo but can offer missing shirts for someone else to wear that would
be a great information too.

We'll do some selection once enough people are put in and I'll try to
contact the people once the location for the photo is set. Try to not
get your selected shirt dirty before the photo. ;)

Let's make this a great and diverse picture again! We need you!
Rhonda

Thanks for suggesting that option Hideki. I do not have Amazon account

Also, for anyone coming from the US, I believe t-mobile provides
call/text/data in Canada and Mexico with no extra charges, but I'd
suggest double-checking your particular arrangement to be sure. I
imagine that also means that you could buy a prepaid sim before leaving,
-- or even postpaid, and only keep it for a month (assuming they no
longer have contracts).

(Note that you do have to enable data roaming in the settings, but
t-mobile confirmed that it wouldn't incur any extra costs.)

Given the number of interested people, I wonder if we should turn it
into an unofficial day trip option (and move it to the 'day trip' day)?

I was about to have this one:
https://debconf17.debconf.org/talks/80/
but it's more the no-sports variant and should even be for children.
There is clearly room for more!

[Debconf-discuss] Borrowing a Mobile Phone for DebCamp/Conf

2017-07-30 Thread Philip Hands
Hi,

It seems that none of the 3 mobiles that I have with me are willing to
play in Canada for one reason or another, so I could do with borrowing
one.

I'm guessing that someone on the way to DebConf, or here already, has a
spare phone gathering dust in a drawer somewhere (I know I do *sigh*) so
if that is you, and you're happy to lend me it, please mail me.

BTW I don't care how dumb the phone -- in fact, the dumber the better if
that means a decent battery life. I also don't care about data, just
calls and SMS.

Cheers, Phil.

I'm curious if any of these 3 mobile phones have quad-band GSM support. If so,
then those would work fine in Canada. Rogers still runs a 2G network so as
long as your phone supports 850/1900 MHz for GSM ("2G"), as quad-band phones
do, you can use their network (nearly all worldwide carriers have roaming
agreements with Rogers).

It's pretty rare for a phone built in the past 5 years or so to not have
quad-band GSM, though it's possible some parts of the world still don't have a
lot of them.

Then 2G should work very well for you. And if you want a prepaid SIM from
Rogers, it shouldn't be too terribly expensive either.

Eitherway, both issues are on the radar for Riot. We're suffering

ymmv.

In other news, we'd love to support usage of Matrix at Debconf (and
Debian is our production distro of choice as a team, ever since Potato!)
