Saturday is obviously not anymore available and anyway I, for myself,
will be in Central Park celebrating the Swiss National Day (an occasion
to meet some friends of mine):

  http://swisssociety.com/events/139/view_detail.html

Monday seems to be available: for what is "other locations" there should
be no problem for the time slot, while if we want a room, the "414
Shapiro" room is available only between

  http://penta.debconf.org/dc10_schedule/day_2010-08-02.en.html

I just submitted an event in Penta and I will discuss tomorrow with
DebConf10's organizers about the possible schedule. As far as I know,
the possible participants are maddog, Felipe and myself here in NYC and
maybe Axel via IRC. If anyone else is interested, please let me know
(directly or via mail) in case we will organize a sort of informal (and
thus not scheduled) BoF.

Thx, bye,

[Debconf-discuss] Thinkpad T4x Docking Station

2010-07-31 Thread Michael Banck
Hi,

my Thinkpad T42 reboots instantly (with no output) when I try to boot
the Xen hypervisor. I thought maybe it makes sense to wire up a serial
console, but a serial port is only available on the docking station/port
replicator, which I do not have.

Does anybody have a docking station or port replicator for a T4x or has
another idea how to get serial console going?

Thanks,

[Debconf-discuss] BoF: RC bug squashing (campaigns)

2010-07-31 Thread Stefano Zacchiroli
Hi everybody, it wouldn't be nice to campaign for preparing BoF in
advance and not doing it for a BoF I've submitted myself! So, if you
are interested in fixing RC bugs and in SPAM-ing planet about your
initiatives in that direction, then you're also invited to attend:

RC bug fixing + NMU = Fun
  http://penta.debconf.org/dc10_schedule/events/609.en.html

which is scheduled for tomorrow, at 11:30.

If you are attending, you're also invited to have a look at the
introductory slides [1] and to think about the following "working
questions":

* do you have NMU (campaign) experiences? good or bad ones?
* advertising NMU campaign: useful or just SPAM?
* is the goal of “more collaborative” RC-fix worthwhile?
* how can we motivate people to do more NMUs?
* (how) should we communicate about NMU campaigns?
* are current NMU rules (devref §5.11.1) good enough?
* is LowThresholdNMU useful anymore?
* do we need an “NMU” equivalent for package removals?
* provocation: as an NMU-er, is Maintainer a feature or a bug?

See you tomorrow!
Cheers.

[Debconf-discuss] Some quieter bars and cafes

2010-07-31 Thread Gabriella Coleman
So some of us have hit a few bars that were unbearably loud, and chock
full of teenage girls barely old enough to legally drink (but
immensely impressed by men in kilts). One place is the Heights (whose
outdoor rooftop seating/bar seems nice but we have never managed to
get there when that is open). 1020 is the other bar that is quite
loud.

I have scoped out a few places and asked around for bars and cafes in
the area that are quieter.

One bar is Amsterdam restaurant:

http://www.amsterdamrestaurant.com/

They serve food, have outdoor seating, and is quite large.

I am also currently working at Max's cafe (to escape the a/c and get
some coffee). It is pretty pleasant here and they have a full wine
bar, sangria, beer and a few other drinks and are open until 12 AM.
There is free wireless as well but you have to get the password from
the wait staff. This is a good place to work on your talk and bring a
group (though not huge) over for some drinks. They have side walk
seating as well, which is a ++ in this beautiful weather. They have a
wine happy hour from 5-7 as well.

[Debconf-discuss] Debconf runners: morning run planned Aug 1st 7:30am

2010-07-31 Thread Christian PERRIER
For tomorrow's morning run, I propose going through Riverside Park
down along the Hudson River, via the "Hudson Greenway". That involves
going through 114th St west for two blocks, then follow Riverside Park
and cross Henry Hudson Pkwy when possible to reach the Hudson
Greenway.

Then follow it down as long as we want..:-)

The general goal would be being back no later than 9am, probably
earlier even so that showered runners can attend the opening of Debian
Day.:-)

So, if interested, please join *at 7:30* on Sunday Aug. 1st in front
of Carman Hall building.

As usual, we'll adapt the pace to whatever is suitable for everybody,
so don't be afraid by those crazy freaks who happen to spend their
life running...:-)

I met with the VCTC folks this morning and they're enthusiast about
having some of us participating to their race. One can see this as a
nice way to do some free software advocacy and have opportunities to
talk about Debian..:-)

Running in kilt is even possible...and don't be scared: I noticed this
morning that all kind of runners are over there, so even occasionnal
runners can easily participate.

So, if interested, please register on
http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf10/5KRunningRace (registering
yourself means nothing...even if you happen to not be able to
participate...the real registration, that involves a $5 fee, is made
just before the race).

I hope that this will not conflict with another DC10 event (I'm
fearing the group photo) as we'll have to leave no later than 17:45
(sorry5:45pm). I apologize in advance to last speakers for that
day whose talks could be missing some of us.

[Debconf-discuss] Debconf runners: report from Sat 31th morning run

2010-07-31 Thread Christian PERRIER

> more of your time.
>
> I plan to join the "Saturday morning group runs" of the Van Cortland
> Track Club (the place where we'll be running a local 5K race next

I ended up going there alone, which isn't indeed a big surprise, given
the early meeting time, after a party where some ppl came back quite
late..:-)

Anyway, I'm really happy of that idea of joining a group of local
runners just to share some time around.

I finally left Columbia at about 7:15am and easily found my way to Van
Cortlandt Park...by just taking a 1 train up to the end of the
line. Nice ride, by the way to ride an early morning train up to
Bronx, which involves a few parts outside in a "standard" NY
neighbourhood, with more views of the "real city" (slightly different
from Times Square, of course).

I easily met with the local runners group in VC Park. They were very
welcoming and happy to learn that someone went through their website
to just find a cool way to avoid running alone in NYC.

Their group run starts with an altogether small ride for 1 mile or so,
then the groups split, depending on the distance and pace they want to
run. I easily connected with the 10-milers who happen to run the same
pace than I do and they brought me to their "Aqueduct" loop that goes
up North along a great trail in woods that happens to be built above
an aqueduct bringin water to NYC, than back in a small valley along a
golf course.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?source=s_d&saddr=116th+st+and+broadway,+manhattan&daddr=87+3rd+ave,+brooklyn&hl=en&geocode=FS2ubgId02aX-ymdzCHAPvbCiTFsKtPTuIgZkQ%3BFYTIbAIdmiGX-ymH6VQfrVvCiTESun5NNJ_1PQ&mra=ls&dirflg=r&ttype=dep&date=07%2F29%2F10&time=1:53pm&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=112674109703111277943.00048c8f0429ae50e9be5&ll=40.907286,-73.881855&spn=0.061884,0.149345&t=h&z=13&start=0
gives an idea of this nice 9 mile loop.

After the run, the group gathers together again and has breakfast in a
restaurant in the neighbourhood. I had a very pleasant chat with many
different people, all sharing the passion of running.

They were very interested by the fact that we're indeed to plan coming
back for their Thursday race
(http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf10/5KRunningRace). I think that
thy will enjoy a lot having a group of various running geeks coming to
their cross-country race. Don't forget saving your DebConf10 tee-shirt
for that day! I'll make a special announcement about the race, again.

Well, in that case I would definitively like to participate... if the
DPL will run in kilt together with us! Zack, I guess that after being a

The problem is the unusual Columbia repository path:

They now seem to support /debian too, in addition to their unusual one.

Jimmy, you made my day, thank you!

Araki-san, would it be possible to add the Columbia University mirror to
cdn.debian.net, please?

For the debian-mirrors@ people, maybe the Columbia mirror information on
 should be updated as well.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

I can do that for a while, giving that anyway I have debian.ch
merchandise and I will coordinate the Debian Merchandise BoF:

  http://penta.debconf.org/dc10_schedule/events/683.en.html

However, I do not want to be there all the time, if possible, given also
that I would like to attend some events and have to meet other people in
NYC. If that is possible, feel free to drop me a mail.

Thx, bye,

You can pass an option to the booting kernel to set up a serial console,
as well as the serial port speed and stop bits. Such as this:

   console=ttyS0,38400n8

However from here there's a snag; I don't have my port replicator with
me (and I don't think it would matter, as I think the port replicator
for the T61 is different than the T42 anyway), and the only other
option is to use a USB->serial converter. That's something I _do_ have
with me, however at the point that the kernel is booting it likely
won't connect the USB->serial converter, so I'm not sure if you could
instead pass something like:

   console=ttyUSB0,38400n8

and actually have it work.

This afternoon on my walk, I stopped in Martin Brothers Wines & Spirits
and purchased a couple relatively inexpensive Spanish vintages. While I
did not find any from Extremedura, which was my target, bottle #1 is
satisfactory ;)

Martin Brothers is a fairly small store, but seemed to my untrained wine
eye to have a wide variety from many regions and a wide price range.

Thanks. I used your example to print out the participant list.

However, it seems the list was encoded in unicode (utf8) and not latin1.

So I changed

| \usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}

to

| \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}

Otherwise some UIDs were garbled (at least on my system). For example,
your name on my PDF output with latin1 became "Rogà c rio Theodoro de
Brito" instead of "Rogério Theodoro de Brito" as utf8 correctly
displayed.

I had the same problem with a2ps, but I don't think there is a way for
a2ps to read unicode (see bug #180236). There seems to be an
alternative called u2ps though.
