[Debconf-discuss] Tango tonight

2008-08-14 Thread W. Martin Borgert
People who want to go to a milonga (freely spoken: a tango
party) meet at 22:30 hrs in the lobby. We will walk about
twelve blocks to a nice little place called "La Rada",
Jujuy 1673. AFAIK, at the same place is a tango class at
20:00 hrs, if you are enthusiastic. The entrance fee of the
milonga is probably 5..10$ (pesos).

[Debconf-discuss] Official group photo today 2pm

2008-08-14 Thread Tiago Bortoletto Vaz
Hi all,

The Debconf official group photo will be taken today at 2:30pm (14:30h).
Once our official photographer[0] didn't attend this year, we are doing
a coletive effort in order to do it with good quality as he did on last
DCs.

Debconf photographers will now check a good place to take that picture -
it's not defined yet. So please guys try to be ready at the hotel
reception at 2:00pm so we guide you. We know it's the lunch time, but
the other non-conflicting time would be 5pm, which there is not enough
light in case of the weather is not perfect.

Please help us to disseminate this, once this event has just been
published :\

Regards,

[Debconf-discuss] (UPDATE) IMPORTANT: renting bus for the day back from MDQ to EZE/B

2008-08-14 Thread Ana Guerrero

Hi,

Marga told me we are not enough people for reting buses back to BA/EZE on the
17th. So we won't rent them.
So start doing your bus reservations if you are going to EZE. If you are going
to BA retiro, it should not be hard get a bus back.

[Debconf-discuss] Capoeira practice

2008-08-14 Thread Marco Túlio Gontijo e Silva
Hello,

the Capoeira practice will happen in the Hotel Astor tomorrow (Friday,
August 15) at 19:00 pm. Please come with comfortable clothes that give
you mobility in uncommon positions. The idea is to start with a small
talk about the history of Capoeira, do some basic moves, and then make a
Roda, in which everyone can play.

Capoeira is a fight, dance and game created by african slaves in Brasil,
with a lot of elements from the african culture.

See you there.

[Debconf-discuss] MDQ-Retiro on Sunday / BA accomodations

Also, are there any BA accomodations people can recommend for

There are printers only at the front desk. I think they will let you
print a copy of a reservation. Just bear in mind that if everyone does
it, it will be a reasonable amount of ink that someone has to pay for,

I think it is a very unfortunate choice of timeslot. Today at that time
there is Luciano's talk about the openssl failure, which I believe is of
interest for most of us. On the contrary, tomorrow schedule has a *hole*

I've spoken with front desk, and they say they can handle 250 people
printing bus receipts, provided you don't mind using the backs of
previously printed pages. So, feel free to print away.

Come on people, you are trying to fix the wrong problem. We nned 40 people
to rant one bus starting IN FRONT OF OUR HOTEL going VIA EZE to Buenos Aires.
We are here about 200 people. Guessing only half of them will leave here on
Sunday we should be able two fill two of these busses. Why not asking your
table mates at dinner at which day they will leave MDQ and what might be the
reason that they not registered on the wiki? I hate if people are just lazy
and it is even worse if a certain number of people who were not that lazy
have to suffer from this and have to register for a bus for themselves.

So please come on people, fire up your browser, don't be stupid and enter
your plan to leave Mar del Plata. It can not be that hard to go to

http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf8/MDQ-return

and even gain profit for yourself.

Thanks to all those who just did their homework.

Kind regards

Andreas.

Well, the scheduleing of the Luciano-talks was very unfortunate in several
aspects and triggered certain problems. I was aware of this - but sometimes
events are just in parallel. BTW, there is *no* hole in the schedule -
that's just the coffee break.

> I really would like to participate, /me hopes in a push of one day

Well it actually is just scheduled for tomorrow because it was a complete
success. All people with a towel went into the sea (OK, there were only
two of them ;-)) and I can asure you that it is much easier than in the morning
because the sand outside stored some warmth over the day ...

So whoever likes to join tomorrow be AT THE BEACH at 17:30 (not in the
entrance hall - we might meet at entrance hall at 17:15).

See you

AFAICS, there 36 people interested in taking said bus, and i'm sure that it can
go to both places (Retiro and EZE). Even if we don't fulfill one bus, i for

Well, because I've learned that somebody tried to watch us swimming but
missed us - Let's just meet 17:15 in the entrance hall ...

I guessed a sunny spot seemed attractive and easy to find (because
the beach becomes shadowy at t his time and skyscrapers just leave
a small spot) - but this assumption was unfortunately wrong.

marga's sent a mail since this to -announce presenting the options. The
problem with getting one bus for everyone on Sunday is that'll it mean
people going in the evening have to turn up far too early and could just
get an earlier bus anyway.

I have 9 people so far for a direct bus to EZE getting in around 5pm or
so (ie suitable for people with flights after 8pm). If I can get 11 or
more (up to 16) then it can be done for AR$100 each. I mailed the people
who were on the wiki with flights after 8 earlier this evening, but if
you're name wasn't on the wiki and you're interested please email me;
the sooner the better as I want this to be sorted tomorrow morning.

[Debconf-discuss] Debconf morning run for Friday

2008-08-14 Thread Christian Perrier
It's fairly late to announce this but better late than never:

The Debconf runners will gather tomorrow Friday morning at 08:00 local
time in the lobby.

We plan to run for about 1h, or 1h15mins maximum and thus be back for
the first morning talk.

No planned direction to go. We'll see.

We will probably also schedule a last run on Saturday morning.

For those receips that were provided online, and I have only in PDF
format, is it ok to send them by mail and note that on the reimbursement
form? Otherwise, I need to use the front desk’s printing services
again...

[Debconf-discuss] BOF "Best practises in team-maintaining packages" - protocol

2008-08-14 Thread gregor herrmann
The BOF has taken place today; thanks to all who participated and
shared their experiences and ideas.

Tim Retout had agreed to take notes during the talk and provided me
with an awesome protocol - thanks alot, Tim!

I'm attaching this protocol to this mail; my only changes were a few
formatting things and some minor additions off the top of my head
(all grammatical errors are of course mine :))

As requested by some attendants at the end of the BOF I'll try to
arrange another BOF for Friday or Saturday, so that we can continue
the work.

If you are a member of one of the teams which has tools that might be
of general interest please send pointers and short descrptions to me,
I will try to compile a list.

(The protocol and the slides are also attached to the event in
pentabarf.)

Cheers,
gregor

debian-med, Andreas Tille
-
* Mailing list communication
* Attract members at debconf
* Infrastructure: QA-related web pages: bug overview, packages and
  descriptions
* Sponsoring for non-DDs
* Someone has written a policy covering package structure/VCS
* Using repository on alioth
* Some tools to build the web stuff
* Interesting to look at who posts to mailing list
* Need to make team have more than one active member
* Be friendly to new members
* Ask them to give an introduction
* The team is working well - small user group, not so many packages, makes
  things easy

debian-science
--
* Mailing list
* Not only a packaging team - fallback for packaging when package isn't
  covered by another team
* Share experience
* Four people
* Repositories on alioth
* Very new
* Has a written a policy
* Tools: git
* Challenges: to welcome new members always, because specific knowledge
  required
* Takes advantage of the debian-med tools
* Follows ITPs with debtags, should be more integrated
* Even if someone outside debian-science is packaging it, can see on
  qareport

debian-voip
---
* Mailing list, also via SVN commit logs
* Infrastructure: private buildd farm, builds svn trunk once per day,
  including sid, backports and Ubuntu packages
* Several non-DD members who commit to SVN
* svn with svn-buildpackage and upstream sources in svn
* No regular workflow for non-DDs getting packages uploaded; bump DDs on
  mailing list
* New members often come from them filing ITPs and then joining team
* Experiences: generally positive, often performs updates quicker than
  single maintainer
* Sometimes difficult having to learn different tools for each team

debian-ocaml - zack
---
* Mailing list, IRC channel
* SVN repository, slowly moving to git
* Enables commit access to every DD, but this isn't often used
* Web report
* Own policy since 2002
* No team-specific problem, but collaboration difficult when every team has
  own conventions. Lack of a common way to document team-specific procedures.
* No common usage of distinction between Uploaders and Maintainer between
  different teams

debian-perl - gwolf
---
* Organised around PET - web page to see overview of needed work
* Also coordinate on lists and IRC
* Alioth repository accepts commits from non-members
* Packages listed in LowNMU
* PET aims to remove need for RFS mails
* Communication via "invalid" changelog entries (i.e. notes at the top of
  debian/changelog)
* Work with svn-buildpackage
* Great success story, good integration

ruby-extras - lucas
---
* Very different to debian-perl
* Fairly standard team
* svn-buildpackage
* cdbs class for ruby packages
* uscan
* Difficult to know who is reponsible for packages within team ->
  one single responsible person per package (in Maintainer)

Comment by Tincho: Important not to restrict people helping out on different
packages

pkg-gnome - kov
---
* Mailing list, IRC
* Quite a few active members, two or three who push the work forward
* Always trying to recruit, gnome large and complex
* Bug triaging is a challenge
* svn-buildpackage, with gnome team-specific layout
* Some work being done on gnome policies, but mostly already integrated in
  debhelper
* Does have interactions with other teams, but mostly these contain the same
  people
* Status page

Comment by gwolf:
* pkg-perl recently discussed whether to move to git, and decided that we
  would be using VCS in a centralised way
* SVN tree is huge; on the other hand in the ruby group, the upstream

I have 16 now, so if you haven't already emailed me then unfortunately I

[Debconf-discuss] Wire handcrafting BoF (or Debian earrings live HOWTO)

2008-08-14 Thread Sarah
Well... in fact it'll be more like a(nother) workshop if we manage to
borrow enough pliers.

So, if you asked or thought about getting some of these shiny red
swirls you've seen around for your ears (or your *friend's, *parents,
son/daughter's, pet's, etc), come to the 1st floor tomorrow (15th) to
the loud hacklab at 5pm and build them yourself.

The Debian earrings are easy to do, and if you prefer you can do any
handcraft you want (I'll provide some materials). Just if by any chance
you have a plier that could be useful, bring it.

See you!

[Debconf-discuss] (Off-topic) Interesting national ID documents during DC8 KSP

2008-08-14 Thread José Miguel Parrella Romero
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Greetings,

I enjoyed some national ID documents in this year's KSP [0]. I'm used to
see passports where the passport number has been perforated using laser
in all the pages except the first ones. I know there are some passports
which don't have the perforations, but wherever I see them I accepted as
a fact that they match with the passport number.

However, at least two of the passports I checked didn't match. I had to
look for the machine readable part of the passport in order to verify
it, and it seems like the "real" passport number is the perforated one,
and not the one that bears the "passport number" inscription [1]

Some brazilians used a form of national ID card which didn't have an
expiration date [2] -- this is unusual since you're usually expected to
come back in five years or so for that kind of documents. The photo in
the brazilian passport has a (prominently located) date, which usually
isn't the same as the passport's expedition date. I was told that you
have to take the picture before and bring it with you when you're
getting your passport.

Mexican passports have longer or shorter durations depending on how much
you pay on taxes when you request it. It probably has a legal framework,
but I find it terrible when governments impose travel restrictions for
their own citizens based on money requirements. Example given, in order
to travel outside Venezuela and get your 600 USD allowance (the only
legal way to get foreign currencies), you have to get a credit card,
which is almost impossible if you are under 25.

I recall seeing spanish passports written in their autonomic languages
- -- they had labels in EU languages, as well as catalonian, galician
and basque -- I didn't see that in recent biometrical passports, and I
was told that you can now choose which language would you like your
passport written in.

My own national ID card had a "typo" in my birthdate (which zack and
atomo64 promptly noticed), which is April 25th., 1987, but they typed
"987" as the year, thus making me 1021 years old, which is NOT NICE.

So, for a funny ending with a political touch, I found some people
browsing through my passport looking for a United States Visa, which had
"good" and "proper" information about me. Curious, at least.

Thanks for Don and Anibal for taking care of the KSP, and everyone who
participated this year!

[0] Not as much as Jacobo: http://raw-output.org/20080815/blacklights

[1] I assume that governments "reuse" older passport books and numbering
in order to save money. And since several countries here are changing
their national documents recently... well.

[2] They don't need a passport to come to Argentina, due to MERCOSUR,
that's why they used that card. We venezuelans aren't supposed to need a
passport either for the same reason, and we were stamped with MERCOSUR
stamps at the airport. The situation in South America regarding free
travel is tricky, but hopefully improving, check:
