Re: A question of self-defence - Fire extinguishers & self defence

2001-07-25 Thread Andrew Woods

If you look at the Reuters image of Carlo holding the fire extinguisher,
he's holding it below head-level. In my opinion, that leaves three options:
Carlo was going to chuck the extinguisher underhand (and sideways to the
vehicle, so it would've bounced off) at a low velocity, or Carlo was
holding the fire extinguisher out in front of him as DEFENSE, or he was
merely holding a fire extinguisher. It's not clear how much time elapsed
between the picture of Carlo alive, and the next image, which is him lying
on the ground with his brains all over the ground. However, the gun is can
be seen and it's pointed at his head, so I assume it wasn't very long.
There's an image of Carlo under the land rover, with the cop who shot him
covering or wiping his face. Neither man in the jeep were wearing gas masks
with face shields, but every other carabinieri member seen in the series is
wearing them.
The other thing that may not have been mentioned is that there were
Carabinieri within 30 feet of the land rover, and that Carlo was in the
Green Zone, supposedly the safe area for protests. There are pictures of
about 10 fellow members of law enforcement a short distance away, including
one with both hands on his forehead area. He appears anguished.
There's an image of Carlo under the land rover, with the cop who shot him
covering or wiping his face.
there's a PDF on indymedia.org with the pictures i'm talking about at
http://italia.indymedia.org/local/webcast/uploads/carlo-photofile.pdf. Most
of this analysis is paraphrased from the pdf, but it seems reasonable.
this may be a repeat of the powerpoint presentation post, but it's more
cross-platform.

RE: 2600 - bell toll signals

2000-07-27 Thread Andrew Alston

For the purposes of information only:

The Greek home direct number still accepts certain 2400/2600 hertz tones
(its a toll free number for doing reverse charge calls to greece, Im not
sure what you would call from the US to get to it), and last I heard you
could still use an old style bluebox to dial anywhere in the world on that
exchange as of about 6 months ago. Im not sure if this is still current, or
if US exchanges filter those tones.

Cheers

Andrew

You are refering to R1 signalling which is obsolete. Most developed
countries use out-band signalling now. Some American phreaks of a few
years back claimed Alaska and Hawaii still used this, although this is
probably out of date.

Modern blueboxers use C5 and R2 international signalling and there
is plenty of information on the net. Google for it. If you can't
use the web then you are unlikely to be able to get this to work.

This has cypherpunk relevance more for obscuring the source of
telephone calls than toll fraud.

I have to day that I strongly disagree with the above. There are
several current offline ecash systems which do not require expensive
(or even require at all) systems on checking double spent value.

Specifically I am referring to Mondex. While there are several
disadvantages to Mondex, and the fact that it is not truly anonymous,
it does currently allow secure offline transactions.

QUEST A.SESE SEIKO
Subject: urgent mail
FROM: QUEST A. SESE SEIKO
REQUEST FOR AN URGENT ASSISTANCE STRICTLY CONFEDENTIAL
I am QUEST A. SESE SEIKO from Zaire, presently known as Democratic Republic of Congo.
I am the son of late president Mobutu Sese Seiko of Zaire, Republic of Congo. I got
your contact from Chambers of Commerce and Industry here in Holland. I now decided to
write to you on a business which would be to our mutual benefit if you willing and can
assure me of your trust and capability.
Upon the death of my father, I left the shores of my country due to pressure and
insecurity directed at my family over the wealth of my late father. Due to the above
circumstance, I was only able to leave my country with the sum of US $18,000,000.00
cash, which I have been able to transport with the use of a courier company to Holland
where I am presently based.
Your assistance is needed here in investing this money, because my ststus presently
(Political refugee) coupled with the fact that I am totally ignorant of
investment/business because I was in school when the unrest in my country claimed the
life of my father and changed my living conditions.
For your assistance and co-operation, I have decided to bequeath to you, 20% of the
total sum involved while 5% is mapped out for any miscellaneous expenses that we may
incur during the process of transferring this money to your country, the balance will
be held in trust for me, by you.
It is 100% risk free in the sense that I have taken proper care of all the formalities
regarding to this transaction.
I am presently 26 years of age with presently no living relatives, I expect to
withdraw this fund from the security firm where I deposited it for safekeeping only if
I am convinced that you can accommodate the money.
The bottom line is that if you are interested, you have to meet with me here in
Holland if possibble,so that we get to know one another and sign an agreement to
protect both our interest as stipulated in this letter and then proceed to conclude
with the security company. I say this for there is a say that goes like "seeing is
believing" and I am aware that due to the scale of this business and coming from one
not previously known to you, you may find it hard to believe.
Items on the things I want are:
Helping me to bank the money in a safe account.
Help me to get residential papers and giving me directions as to what to invest on
like research on health products commercially viable or in accordance to your
directions.
Please give me a reply as soon as you receive my message to enable me finalize with
the security company where I deposited this cash for safety.
Thank you and God bless.

THE PROBLEM

The US and international healthcare industry are currently in a major crisis. There is
a huge shortage of skilled healthcare specialists, doctors and nurses, and since 9/11,
many qualified professionals are finding it impossible to immigrate into countries
desperately needing medical personnel.

THE SOLUTION

True Health Incorporated is a full service specialist, medical equipment and medical
professional supplier to the healthcare industry. Its primary clients are Great
Britain's National Health Service (NHS), BUPA International and the private Nursing
Home Industry. The Company also delivers recruitment services to the NHS; specializing
in the provision of locem radiographers and nurses.

MD, NURSE SHORTAGES REACHING CRISIS LEVELS

WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- Shortages of surgeons, pharmacists and nurses in hospitals across
the United States are reaching crisis levels and may worsen over the next several
years, health care experts warned. The nursing shortage -- more than 126,000
positions currently remain unfilled -- has become so severe it is endangering the
lives of patients and is a primary reason for overcrowding in emergency departments
and cancellation of surgeries, according to a report by an Experts Roundtable panel
convened by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
The Society for Thoracic Surgeons recently warned that a shortage of heart surgeons
looms within a few years and a survey of hospitals found pharmacists, X-ray
technicians and therapists are leaving at such an alarming rate it already is
impacting the quality of care patients receive.

JOHNSON C0-SPONSORS LEGISLATION TO ADDRESS NURSE SHORTAGES

January 24, 2003 Washington, DC- U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) recently co-sponsored
the Nurse Reinvestment Act to address areas with critical nurse shortages in an effort
to provide more opportunities to recruit and retain quality nurses. "Our national
health care system has many problems that need to be addressed," Johnson said. "At the
top of that is the severe shortage of nurses.

TRUE HEALTH'S SUBSIDIARY - WESTMERIA

True Health through its wholly owned subsidiary, Westmeria for 20 years has developed
a reputation for getting medical personnel in where they are needed fast. Now with

On a special Teachers Day, a kindergarten teacher was receiving gifts from

overhead, and said, "I bet I know what it issome flowers." "That's
right" the boy said, "but how did you know?" "Oh, just a wild guess," she
said. The next pupil was the candy store owner's daughter. The teacher held
her gift overhead, shook it, and said, "I bet I can guess what it isa
box of candy." "That's right, but how did you know? " asked the girl. "Oh,
just a wild guess," said the teacher. The next gift was from the son of the
liquor store owner. The teacher held it overhead, but it was leaking. She
touched a drop of the leakage with her finger and touched it to her tongue.
"Is it wine?" she asked. "No" the boy replied. The teacher repeated the
process, touching another drop of the leakage to her tongue. "Is it
champagne?" she asked. "No" the boy replied. The teacher then said, "I give
up, what is it?" The boy replied, "A puppy!"
My mother and I were standing at he check-out in the supermarket as the
cashier scanned the things we bought. When the price of a bottle of orange

stopped wheat she was doing and disappeared down one of the aisles to check
the price. she soon returned and said that the price was $3.95. When she
handed my mother the change, a five cent coin rolled onto the floor. Much to
my amusement, as the cashier bent over to search for it, my mother said "Oh,
don't bother, it's only five cents."

First, make sure your filter for mattd is listed before your filter for
cypherpunks. Also, because it seemed like mattd's from: header was somewhat
variant, i have it matching just "mattd". Then there's a "make status:
read", a "transfer to: trash", and a "skip rest". Good luck.

Dearest Choate,
The title you're looking for is "Minority Report". The trailer seems good,
and indicates potential despite the fact that it's a Spielberg movie
starring Tom Cruise. It's yet another movie based on a Phillip K. Dick
story, which means it will have little resemblance to the story at all.

If one of the addresses was not ever used for legitimate purposes,
then blocking all addresses that sent to this address should be an
effective filter.

Also, with the low cost of storage today, storing message hashes
of known spam wouldn't take much space (not to say that this would
be a good way of identifying spam).

I was pondering recently the usage of a "web of trust"-type system
whereby one could use communal whitelists with decreasing trust
going outward as well as the opportunity to selected trusted
sources - perhaps using authentication authorities for PK's
as authoratitive whitelists, or not, as per ones choice. (Since
PK's require identification for the issue of certs, it at least
provides some chain of evidence. However, this negates the opportunity
for anonymity).

How feasible are implementations of such 'distributed' whitelists?
(I'm assuming that entries from non-whitelist identified emails
are permitted to send through on a challenge-response basis,
and that once identified, users have the opportunity to add to
such whitelist).

And, is it possible to indentify a bit of information as coming
from a trusted source, without identifying that trusted source
and without resorting to the use of a TTP?

Freedom means what to you? Getting to vote once every four
or five years on what direction your country is going to
take?

What if freedom means an anarchive un-state?

Being forced to subjugate your views to those of others
on the basis of your geographical locality, while being
prevented from gathering with others who may share your
political views in sufficient numbers such as to be able
to succesfully secede is not freedom.

What is development? Market liberalisation? Socialism?
Statism or the removal of the state aparatus?

In statist, capitalist democracy, reduce or increase
taxes? Remove or increase social welfare and support?
Permit or restrict immigration?

If you are sold on blanket, unqualified terms such as
'freedom', 'development' and 'democracy', and are willing
to accept the empty rhetoric espoused by most politicians
without critical analysis, then you'd probably make a good
subject of the current system.

Or am I wrong?

RE: Where's Osama? (Re: OPPOSE THE WAR! We are going to ruin Iraq to get the oil. Who's next)

2002-11-16 Thread Andrew John Lopata
> Is there any overwhelming reason to believe that going back to
>Iraq would be any different?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer:
I'm no expert, but a friend of mine in the military suggested that invading
Iraq now would be a lot different than the Gulf War. He said that urban
combat, which will be necessary to depose Hussein, is the most difficult and
dangerous type of combat there is. The Gulf War was fought on a flat plane
with no obstructions or terrain differences (the desert) where superior fire
power has a great advantage. Other reasons to think that invading Iraq this
time will be much more difficult and likely cause many more U.S. causalities
include:
1. The troops the U.S. fought against in the Gulf War were mainly recent
conscripts with little training or motivation. Taking Baghdad will require
fighting veteran republican guard troops.
2. There is no clear objective to this invasion of Iraq besides deposing
Hussein. Ignoring the long-term consequences of this invasion (which is the
usual practice), the short-term prospects aren't good. There is no readily
available alternate government to install in Hussein's place. The resulting
destabilization in the region will likely result in a U.S. military presense
in the country for a much longer time than in the Gulf War.

Sir

First, I must solicit your confidence in this

secret. Though I know that a transaction of this magnitude will make any one
apprehensive and worried. But I am assuring you that all will be well at the end of

decided to contact you due to the urgency of this transaction.

Let me start by introducing myself properly to you. I am Andrew Davis, Manager, Lloyds
TSB, Chelsea, London, I came to know you through the internet and I want to count on
your reliability
to handle this confidential transaction, which involves the transfer of a huge sum of
money to a foreign account requiring maximum
confidence.

THE PROPOSITION

A foreigner, a French Citizen, Late Engr. John Pierre
(Snr) an oil merchant with the British Government until his death last two years in
the terrorist attack on World Trade Centre in New York USA on the Sept. 11/2001,
banked with us Lloyds TSB Chelsea branch and had closing balance as at the end of end,
20

01 worth US$7,800,000.00(Seven Million eight hundred United States Dollars), the bank
now expects a next of kin as beneficiary. Valuable efforts are being made by Lloyds
TSB Chelsea branch to get in touch with any of Pierre’s Family or relatives but to n

o avail.

It is because of the perceived possibility of not
being able to locate any of Late Engr. John Pierre’s next of
kin (he had no wife or children that is known to us).
A close friend of Mr. Pierre said he was Gay or homosexual. The Management, under my
influence as the manager, and Members of the Board of Directors has made arrangements
for the fund to be declared "Unclaimed" and subsequently be donated to the trust fu

nd for CHARITY HOMES in europe general.

In order to avert this negative development, some of my trusted colleagues and I, now
seek your permission to have you stand as next of kin to Late John Pierre (Snr)so that
the fund US$7.8 Million will be released and paid into your account as the benefi

ciary or next of
kin. All documents and proofs to enable you get this fund will be carefully worked
out. We have secured from the probate an Order of Mandamus to locate any of the
deceased beneficiaries, and more, so we are assuring you that this business is 100%
risk fr

ee.

Your share stays while the rest will be for myself and my colleagues for investment
purpose according to agreement within both parties.

As soon as we receive an acknowledgement of your acceptance of our mutual business
proposal, we would furnish you with the necessary disbursement ratio to suite both
parties without any conflict.

If this proposal is acceptable by you, do not take undue advantage of the trust we
have bestowed on you, get in touch with me immediately.

Best regards,
Andrew Davis,
Manager,
