Hundreds of people wandered into Pershing Park on the morning of Sept. 27 
activists looking for a protest, nurses in town for a conference, lawyers 
headed to work, and a cyclist training for a race. And there was Chief 
Charles Ramsey with his troops, ready to arrest them all.

By 2:25 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, lawyer Julie Abbate had arrived at D.C. 
Superior Court under the close watch of U.S. marshals. Once in the 
building, Abbate says, she was put up against a wall and patted down. The 
officers then told her to pull down her green slacks and underwear, squat, 
and cough. "I thought they were kidding," Abbate says. "They weren't." She 
felt stupid. "Every order I obeyed even 'Take off your fucking pants and 
cough.'" Orders to take off your pants and cough are standard operating 
procedure for processing an arrestee in D.C.

But standard procedure took on a new meaning in the mass sweep that 
corralled Abbate and more than 400 other innocent people in Pershing Park 
on Friday, Sept. 27. It was the first day of a protest that was supposed to 
shut the city down, spread the gospel of anti-globalization, and plead for 
a U.S. foreign policy based on peace and love.

Many bystanders, such as Abbate, wandered into the fray, unaware of the 
police department's protocol for handling civil demonstrations. She ended 
up being arrested that morning in Pershing Park, at 15th Street and 
Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The charge was failure to obey a police order, the 
same rap applied to her fellow arrestees. She spent five hours handcuffed 
on a bus. Eventually, she was hogtied wrist-to-ankle on the floor of the 
police academy's gym. That lasted for another 12 hours.

On Saturday morning at 5 a.m., Abbate was transferred to central booking 
downtown. She and other Pershing Park arrestees crammed into a cell 
consisting of cement floors, one bench, and one toilet. They had to form a 
"pee wall" to prevent officers from watching them go to the bathroom. 
Officers took their time processing them; some even threatened to leave 
them in custody through the weekend.

"That's what you get," taunted the officers, according to the 36-year-old 
Abbate.

Eight hours later, they were transferred to Superior Court, where they went 
through the squat-and-cough routine. They were moved to a cell that became 
so crowded that arrestees had to stand on the toilet to make room. "It was 
exhausting, infuriating, bewildering, maddening," Abbate says. "It made me 
feel really, really helpless."

Police Chief Charles Ramsey viewed the treatment of Abbate and her 
cellmates as something of a coup. As the whole drama at Pershing Park 
unfolded that Friday morning, Ramsey looked on from the middle of 15th 
Street. He leaned against a standard-issue riot baton he used for a cane as 
his troops rounded up the 400-odd arrestees. The arrests were choreographed 
so well, all he had to do was wait.

One man, maybe two, hollered questions at Ramsey. Why are those 
demonstrators being detained? What did they do wrong? These were easy 
questions to ignore, especially if you were accompanied by an entourage of 
blue.

Metrobuses 8733 and 8734, two of many filled with Pershing Park arrestees, 
were shoving off to muted applause from activists. Soon the riot cops 
trotted away, two by two. Then the bike cops left, with their supervisor 
shouting, "Thanks to everybody!" Ramsey started back to his cruiser.

Ramsey shuffled against his makeshift cane down Pennsylvania Avenue. He 
took his time, turning back once to see that everything was quiet. On this 
day, downtown was his living room, where cops could double-park, set out 
rolls of police tape, form pop-up police lines, and arrest 400 people 
without dirtying a uniform.

At a late-afternoon victory lap before the media, Ramsey took to the 
bouquet of microphones assembled in front of police headquarters and

A couple points.
The first concerns means and ends. The claim made in this article that 
means and ends are the same thing is a common enough point. But its really 
not true. To be sure it is important that there be a corellation between 
means and ends, but there are good reasons for distinguishing between them.

I want to live in a society in which all decision-making about the things 
that effect us will be as democratic and open as possible. I also think it 
is important that these values be reflected in the organizations that make 
up the movement that brings about that society, because if they aren't they 
won't succeed. But the society we live in places constraints on how open 
and democratic our organizations can be. The requirement under capitalism 
that many of us work ourselves to death to feed and clothe ourselves and 
our families puts real limits on our fullest participation in the 
democratic life of our organizations. Similarly the repression directed by 
the state against our organizing work often makes it impossible for us to 
be as open and transparent as we would prefer.

Taking both of these examples its not to difficult to see how insisting on 
the identity of means and ends can result in choosing means that sabotage 
actually achieving ones ends.

This contradiction is actually one of many that we confront in trying to 
make a better world out of the materials available to us in this one. The 
direct route is not always the one that leads you where you want to go. 
Often the path has twists and turns and you need a sophisticated map and 
compass to keep yourself oriented. Without a theoretical grounding that 
enables us to understand how contradictions like this function -- a theory 
of dialectics -- we can get into situations in which we are simply walking 
in circles rather than steadily ascending a spiral staircase.

The second concern is the relationship between individualist varieties of 
anarchism and so called anarcho-capitalism. There are definitiely real 
differences. But there are also similiarities.

The first is their class character. Like all petty bourgeois ideologies, 
individualist anarchism starts of by denying that it even has a class 
characater and insists that it transcends such things. Individualist 
anarchism, like classical liberalism, accepts the abstraction of the 
individual from their social and historical context that is really just an 
ideological reflection of the alienated nature of our lives and labor. The 
individual as self-contained vessel of pure desires is an ideological 
construct with no relationship to reality and is essentially a high 
faluting variation on the idea of the individual as consumer.

Individualist anarchists may rhetorically reject important aspects of 
capitalism like private property, but they pose no real threat to it. The 
elevation of the supposedly subversive character of shop-lifting, for 
example, reveals the profound strategic poverty of this perspective. 
Private property relations can only be destroyed by the working class and 
only if it is well organized. This organization is always experienced as a 
threat to the sacred autonomy of individual in the eyes of the petty 
bourgeoisie, because rhetoric aside the petty bourgeois notion of the 
individual makes no sense except as an owner of property.

The similarities between individualist anarchist visions of a new society 
and more classical petty bourgeois fantasies of the Robinson Crusoe variety 
is striking. (The common theme of the return to nature in both is consonant 
with the denial of the class character of the project.)

FINALLY: THE TRUTH ABOUT THE MURDER OF SAMORA MACHEL
On June 25th, 1975 thousands cheered as Mozambicans celebrated their
independence from over 400 years of Portuguese rule. Soldiers from
the revolutionary army, Frelimo raised their weapons in triumph.
Peasants saluted their new flag of green, black and yellow. Samora
Machel, Mozambique's new president declared, " Our perspective is to
form a new society in Mozambique. Our options are various: in the
first place we want to wipe out misery which in our country means
hunger, lack of hospitals, and products. We are against
exploitation." If there's one thing Machel understood about a
successful revolution against the Portuguese, is that it had to have
the complete support of the people it sought to liberate. For that
reason the liberation strategy that Samora and Frelimo put into
motion succeeded; Mozambique's' was a people's revolution, and
Frelimo the people's army.
In October of 1986 Machel died in a "mysterious" plane crash on South
African soil. Now, a former member of an apartheid death squad has
confirmed that the death of Mozambique's first president was not an
accident, but murder. The man making this revelation is a Namibian
national, Hans Louw, who was once a member of the notorious Civil
Cooperation Bureau (CCB). Despite its innocuous name, this body was
one of the most sinister of the apartheid regime's special units,
dedicated to clandestine operations, up to and including murder,
against the regime's opponents. Louw is currently serving a 28 year
term for murders not connected with the CCB, in Baviaanspoort Prison
near Pretoria. Louw claims that he was part of a "clean-up team"
whose job was to go to the crash site, and finish off the Mozambican
President if he survived the disaster. In fact, the back-up team was
not activated, because the original plan - to lure the plane off
course by using a false navigation beacon - worked, and Machel died
on impact, as the presidential aircraft smashed into a bleak hillside
at Mbuzini. Louw said the false beacon was put in position by members
of the apartheid regime's Military Intelligence. A second man, Edwin
Mudingi, says now that he was also part of the operation, and
confirmed that Louw was on the team. Mudingi's unsavoury past
includes membership of the Selous Scouts, a unit in the armed forces
of the illegal Rhodesian regime of Ian Smith that was responsible for
many atrocities.
Samora Machel was an internationalist. He supported and allowed
revolutionaries fighting white minority regimes in Rhodesia and South
Africa to operate within Mozambique and he earned their wrath in
return. Frelimo deputy Rafael Maguni just last October told the
Mozambican parliament "The conspiracy of which Samora was a victim
was an expression of the destabilization strategy used by the
apartheid regime in the region, which sought to block the African
National Congress (ANC), and had our country as a major target". At
the time of that speech Maguni predicted that the truth of the murder
of Samora Machel would come out. Today, he has been proven right.

How to Kill the Golden Calf?

Times of fright. The world lives in a state of terror, and the terror 
disguises itself: it claims to be the work of Saddam Hussein, an actor 
already very tired of working as the enemy, or Osama Bin Laden, 
professional intimidator.

But the real author of the planetary panic is called the Market. This 
character has nothing to do with that place in the neighborhood were one 
goes for fruits and vegetables. It is an almighty terrorist without a face 
that it is everywhere, like God, and believes to be, like God, eternal. Its 
many interpreters announce: "The Market is nervous", and warn us: "Do not 
irritate the market".

Its thick criminal record makes it fearsome. It has spent its life stealing 
food, assassinating jobs, kidnapping countries and fabricating wars.

To sell its wars the market sows fear. Fear creates a climate. The 
television is in charge of making the towers fall down every day. What is 
left of the Anthrax panic? Not only an official investigation that found 
out very little about those lethal letters: it also left a spectacular 
military budget increase for the USA. And the millions that the country 
spends on the death industry is not just chicken feed. Barely a month and a 
half of those expenses would be enough to end misery in the world, if the 
numbers of the United Nations do not lie.

Each time the Market gives the order, the red light alarm blinks in the 
danger metering machine; the machine changes all suspicion into evidence. 
The preventative wars kill just in case, not for the evidence. Now it is 
the turn of Irak. Again the country that has been condemned has been 
punished. The dead would comprehend: Irak has the second largest oil 
reserve in the world, which is just what the Market needs to assure 
combustibles for the wasteful consumption society.

Mirror, mirror: Who is the most feared? The imperial powers monopolize, by 
natural right, weapons of mass destruction.

In the times of the conquest of the Americas, when what is now called the 
Global Market was born, smallpox and flu killed far more indigenous people 
than the sword and the harquebus. The success of the European invasion had 
bacteria and viruses to thank. Centuries later, those providential allies 
were converted into war weapons by the world powers. A handful of those 
countries monopolize the biological arsenal. A couple of decades ago, the 
USA allowed Saddam Hussein to launch epidemic bombs against the Kurds, when 
he was pampered by the West and the Kurds were receiving bad press, but 
those bacteriological weapons were made with stock bought from a company in 
Rockville, Maryland.

In military matters as in everything else the Market preaches freedom, but 
it does not like the slightest competition. Saddam Hussein is very scary. 
The world supply is concentrated in the hands of a few in the name of 
universal security. The world shivers. Tremendous threat: Iraq could use 
bacteriological weapons again; even worse, they could have nuclear weapons 
sometime. Humanity cannot allow that danger, proclaims the dangerous 
President of the only country that has used nuclear weapons to assassinate 
a civilian population. Could it be that it was Iraq who exterminated the 
elderly, women and children in Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Millenium landscape:

- People do not know whether tomorrow they will be able to find something 
to eat, or whether they will lose their roofs, or how will they survive if 
they get sick or experience an accident; - People do not know whether 
tomorrow they will lose their jobs, or if they will be forced to work 
double in exchange for half, or if their pensions will be eaten by the 
wolfs in the stock market or by the inflation mice; - Citizens who do not 
know if they will be assaulted around the corner, or if their houses will 
be emptied, or if someone desperate will stick a knife into their bellies; 
- Peasants who do not know if tomorrow they will have land to work and 
fisherman who do not know if they will find rivers or seas that are not yet 
poisoned; - People and countries that do not know how they will pay their 
debts multiplied by usury.

Are these daily terrors the work of Al Qaeda?

The economy commits transgressions that are not published in the 
newspapers: every minute 12 children die of hunger. In the world terrorist 
organization that the military power guards against, there are one thousand 
millions with chronic hunger and six hundred million overweight.

Strong currency, fragile life: Ecuador and El Salvador have adopted the 
dollar as their national currency, but the population emigrates. Never have 
those countries produced so much poverty and so many immigrants. The sale 
of human flesh abroad generates loss of roots, sadness and currency. The 
Ecuadorian people forced to look for work elsewhere have sent to their 
country, in 2001, a sum on money higher than the banana, shrimp, tuna,

Internet Stokes Anti-War Movement

This weekend's anti-war protests were the first mass demonstrations in 
memory to occur before a conflict, a testimony to the organizing power of 
the Internet, observers say.
While the Vietnam-era anti-war movement took years to gather momentum, 
hundreds of thousands of protestors turned out in dozens of U.S. cities on 
Saturday to protest a possible war in Iraq.
The two biggest gatherings took place in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. 
Estimates of the turnout are contentious -- authorities cited 100,000 for 
both cities, while organizers say crowds topped 850,000 -- but it's 
probably safe to say the marches were the biggest since the anti-Vietnam 
War protests of the 1960s.
The rallies attracted a broad spectrum of protestors, from campus 
firebrands to elderly Republicans. Many religious groups were involved 
("Who Would Jesus Bomb?" read one banner), as well as trade unions, a wide 
range of political groups and a lot of ordinary citizens.
The disparity of protestors is a sign the anti-war movement has gone 
mainstream, observers said, and it's thanks not to the media, but to 
hundreds of anti-war websites and mailing lists.
"Never before in human history has an anti-war movement grown so fast and 
spread so quickly," wrote historian and columnist Ruth Rosen in the San 
Francisco Chronicle. "It is even more remarkable because the war has yet to 
begin. Publicized throughout cyberspace, the anti-war movement has left 
behind its sectarian roots and entered mainstream culture."
Howard Rheingold, author of Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution, also 
believes the Internet played a defining role in bringing the movement 
together.
"The last time the U.S. contemplated war -- 1991 -- the Internet was still 
an isolated phenomenon, confined to a relatively small population of 
enthusiasts," he wrote in an e-mail. "Now, not only are most of the 
citizens online, but online activism has had years to mature and perfect 
its techniques."
"Saturday's rallies were unique in the long history of anti-war activism in 
the U.S. in that, to my knowledge, never before have hundreds of thousands 
of people protested a possible war," wrote Peter Rothberg, who is associate 
publisher of The Nation and maintains the ActNow weblog, in an e-mail.
However, Rothberg said people took to the streets not because of the 
Internet per se, but because of their shared opposition to a pre-emptive, 
unilateral strike against Iraq.
"There's no question that the Internet has provided a terrific new tool for 
organizers who are growing increasingly adept at employing the medium to 
best advantage," he wrote. "I hesitate to give all or even preponderant 
credit to the medium, though. I think the message, and the very real fact 
that lots of folks oppose an invasion of Iraq, are what got people out on 
the streets."
Nonetheless, protest organizers said the Net played a key role in 
disseminating the anti-war message, motivating and mobilizing people, and 
efficiently communicating details like travel plans.
"The Internet played a very significant role," said Sarah Sloan, an 
organizer with International ANSWER, the group that planned the rallies. 
"It made a major difference in getting our message out there, especially 
because the mainstream media isn't covering the anti-war movement."
Sloan said for many people, joining the movement was as simple as typing 
"anti-war" into Google and being directed to hundreds of anti-war websites.
The United for Peace website, for example, one of the anti-war movement's 
major clearing houses, includes news, contacts, background information, 
fliers, printable posters, contacts for scores of local activist groups and 
comprehensive travel arrangements to the protests from 300 different U.S. 
cities.
"Without that resource, it's hard to find out how to get involved," Sloan 
said.
Sloan said the Internet also allowed the Sunday protests to go 
international. Protestors in 32 countries held street demonstrations. 
"There's no way the event would have been international without the 
Internet," she said.
Of the hundreds of different groups involved, almost all have websites and 
e-mail lists. As well as inspiring, organizing and mobilizing people, the 
Internet gives protestors the sense they are part of a larger movement.
"Before the Internet, people felt blacked out by the media, because it 
doesn't represent their views," said Andrea Buffa, a spokeswoman for United 
for Peace. "Now, because of the Net, they feel like they're part of a 
movement. They're no longer isolated. It helps mobilize people, gets them 
to move."
United For Peace is organizing an Oil and War protest action on Feb. 4 at 
local gas stations around the United States. Activists are encouraged to 
print out the Web page and hand out copies at the pumps. "There's no way we

POLISARIO SAY, "FORGET ABOUT IT"
The Polisario Front fighting to end Moroccan rule over the occupied Western 
Sahara on Monday rejected the latest United Nations proposal for a 
settlement of the conflict. The Sahrawi guerrilla movement said the plan 
presented last week by UN special envoy for the Western Sahara James Baker 
offered nothing new. The Polisario described Baker’s proposal as "just 
another repetition of his Framework Agreement," which outlines Western 
Sahara as an autonomous Moroccan province. The Polisario said it is, "…the 
same framework plan that was already rejected by all the parties to the 
conflict except Morocco and which the Security Council had already refused 
to accept." Emhamed Khadad, Polisario’s coordinator with the UN, said that 
"any proposal that does not take into account the inalienable rights of the 
Sahrawi people to self-determination will not have our approval."
Baker has been surprisingly persistent in proposing a pro-Moroccan solution 
to the conflict, given the continuous resistance of his employers, the UN. 
The ex-US Secretary of State has been seen defending US interests in the 
region. Morocco is one of the US' closest allies in Northern Africa. 
Further, US oil companies are involved in the search of oil off the Sahara 
coast, contracted by the Moroccan government. Baker himself is known to 
have close ties to Kerr McGee, the US oil company given rights to exploit 
possible Sahrawi offshore oil. In addition, the Bush administration is in a 
hurry to begin the drilling off of Western Sahara.
The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) was declared by Polisario in 
1976 and has its seat of government in Tindouf. The SADR was admitted in 
1982 to the Organization of African Unity, leading Morocco to withdraw from 
the pan-African body, which last year was formally transformed into the 
African Union.

Endless War.

Friends,
Just a few hours after sending out my e-mail on Jan 12, the one headed 
Americans, oppose the threatened war, I got a reply from Monty Neill with a 
paper that the Midnight Notes group in Boston had written to the anti-war 
movement in the U.S. It is one of the most insightful analyses I have seen 
of what the U.S. government is up to, and draws conclusions about what the 
anti-war movement must do if we are to succeed, conclusions I'm sure are 
correct. I think it is "must" reading.
Their paper, titled "Respect Your Enemies--The First Rule of Peace: An 
Essay Addressed to the U. S. Anti-war Movement ", points out, for example, 
that Iraq is not being targetted only for its oil but for the bigger goal 
of doing away with OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries), 
which, I had not realized, operates as an oligarchy OUTSIDE OF NEO-LIBERAL 
CONTROLS. It is not subject to World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations, 
nor to the pressures that the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World 
Bank (WB) and other agencies of international control use to coerce 
so-called sovereign nations into obeying neo-liberal dictates. The U.S. is 
aiming for total control of all oil and gas production worldwide, in an 
attempt to revive profits for U.S.-based capital.
They end their essay as follows:
We believe that if the antiwar movement emphasizes the fact that the Iraq 
invasion is part of an overall strategy of endless war that will jeopardize 
the U.S. population's life, liberty and property in order to try to secure 
an economic system that will continue to be in deep crisis, then we can lay 
the foundation for a major change in the political debate and sentiment in 
this country. (And lest we be misunderstood, we do agree that one 
continuing, necessary task of the anti- war movement will be to bring to 
the attention of the U.S. population the massive casualties around the 
planet that will ensue from the endless war to preserve capitalism.)
5. Conclusion: No Fear
The Bush Administration's policy is not a product of crackpots, it is a 
desperate initiative to try to militarily save a failing world economic 
system. Many people in South and Central America, Africa and Asia have lost 
hope in finding themselves in this system and are trying to recreate their 
lives outside the precincts of neoliberalism. The same threatens to happen 
here in the U.S. That possibility, and not the machinations of Al Qaeda or 
Saddam Hussein, is the Bush Administration's deepest fear.
Now it is time to learn from the wisdom of an enemy philosopher, Thomas 
Hobbes, the defender of the absolute state. In the epigraph we quoted, 
Hobbes locates the source of peace in three passions: Fear, Desire, and 
Hope. The Bush Administration has effectively used Fear to stifle 
opposition. It correctly claims that the right not to be killed is the 
greatest human right. It has asked for a carte blanche to defend that right 
and impose Peace on the world through the sword. Bush often pointed to the 
cinders of the World Trade Center towers to win the "war powers against 
Iraq" resolution, for the Fear is real. Not accidentally, however, the Bush 
Administration spokespeople have forgotten the other passionate sources of 
Peace -- Desire and Hope. They know that they cannot stimulate these 
passions even rhetorically without rousing derision throughout the planet. 
Their economic and social system is that bankrupt. This is the Bush 
Administration's deepest weakness: it cannot win on the basis of Fear of 
Death alone.
That is why our movement cannot simply trade Fear for Fear with the Bush 
Administration, or be amplifiers of the Fear on which the administration 
thrives. We cannot best them in this game. Of course, it is our civic duty 
to point out bureaucratic failures and hyperboles that endanger people in 
the U.S. or abroad and, if we have good evidence, to point out past, 
present, or future U.S. government complicity with Al Qaeda and Saddam 
Hussein's regime. But unless we can call to the other passionate sources of 
Peace, we will be as bankrupt as the Bush regime and its supporters.
The antiwar movement should, therefore, speak to the Desires and Hopes of 
the people of the U.S., from universal healthcare to a healthy environment. 
We also need to bring the demands of the anti-globalization movement of the 
1990s into our demonstrations, forums and programs, especially the wisdom 
behind the slogan, "This Earth is Not For Sale," i.e., an end to the 
privatization of the gifts of the planet and its history. We can work out 
the details, it is the direction that is crucial now.
We leave you with a historical example in support of our thesis. The most 
effective way the threat of nuclear terror was answered in the 1950s was 
not the antinuclear war movement, but the black revolution in the U.S. and 
the anti-colonial movement around the planet. Black people in the U.S. and

4 Marines killed in helicopter crashes
Four US Marines died today when two helicopters crashed in south Texas 
while assisting in an anti-narcotics mission.
Captain Joe Koppel says the AH-1W SuperCobra helicopters from the HMLA-775 
squadron based in Camp Pendleton, California, crashed near Zapata, Texas.
He says the pilot and co-pilot of each aircraft, the only people on board, 
have not survived.
He says the cause of the crash is still under investigation and the names 
of the four officers are being withheld.

US. Promises to Hold Iraqi Oil 'In Trust' Wed Jan 22,12:34 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell promised that a U.S. 
military occupation would hold Iraq's oilfields "in trust" for the Iraqi 
people.
In an interview with U.S. newspapers on Tuesday, released by the State 
Department on Wednesday, Powell said the Bush administration was studying 
different models for managing the Iraqi oil industry if the United States 
invades.
"If we are the occupying power, it will be held for the benefit of the 
Iraqi people and it will be operated for the benefit of the Iraqi people," 
he said.
"How will we operate it? How best to do that? We are studying different 
models. But the one thing I can assure you of is that it will be held in 
trust for the Iraqi people, to benefit the Iraqi people. That is a legal 
obligation that the occupying power will have," he added.
Powell said the U.S. military would not want to run Iraq for long after a 
possible invasion but he declined to speculate how long U.S. troops would 
stay in the country.
"There is no desire for the United States armed forces to remain in charge 
or to run a country for any length of time beyond that which is necessary 
to make sure that there is an appropriate form of government to take over

President Bush said this Iraq situation looks like "The rerun of a bad 
movie." Well sure, there's a Bush in the White House, the economy's going 
to hell, we're going to war over oil. I've seen this movie, haven't I? How 
many have seen this movie?
I had a terrible nightmare last night. I dreamt it was the year 2015. The 
Bush twins were president and we were just getting ready to fight Gulf War 
III. It was a nightmare.
As we prepare for this war with Iraq, President Bush wants to make one 
thing perfectly clear: This is not about oil... It's about gasoline.
President Bush said Saddam Hussein is like a rerun of a bad movie. And 
today Madonna said, "Leave me out of this. Why is my name dragged into this?"
France said today they may veto the use of force in Iraq. The French afraid 
to go to war? I can't believe that. That's unprecedented.
Germany said they will not go to war against Iraq either. However, they say 
they would consider taking over Poland again.
Yesterday national elections were held in Cuba and there was only one 
candidate on the ballot there and experts are dismissing the Cuban 
elections as "a big farce." Well, sure, you can't be that close to Florida 
without something rubbing off. They're only 90 miles away.
Threats charge case...Chief Magistrate faces court
Queensland's Chief Magistrate Di Fingleton is expected to make her first 
court appearance this morning on two charges.

Ms Fingleton is facing a charge of threatening a witness and attempting to 
pervert the course of justice.

She has been stood down on full pay pending the outcome of the case.

The charges arose after a judicial review in the Supreme Court last year, 
in relation to a row between Ms Fingleton and other magistrates.

Her case will be mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning.

JEWISH ACTIVISTS DISRUPT LIEBERMAN CANDIDACY ANNOUNCEMENT
Citing Lieberman's support for Israeli military violence, activists 
challenge candidate.

STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT—Jewish activists disrupted Sen. Joseph Lieberman’s 
announcement of his presidential candidacy at Stamford High School and 
hisfirst campaign stop at the Stamford Diner. Holding placards and banners, 
30 members of Jews Against the Occupation (JATO) chanted, "U.S. funds 
Israel’s War… Jewish Voters Say No More!" Two activists were arrested 
during the demonstration. JATO calls for an end to the Israeli occupation 
of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem as well as an end to U.S. 
military and economic aid for Israel.

"Senator Lieberman claims to speak for American Jews when he calls for 
unconditional U.S. support for Israel. But increasingly, Jews in the U.S. 
and Israel reject the violent Israeli repression of Palestinian civilians," 
says Malcah Rosen of Stamford, one of the demonstrators.

JATO activists protested Israeli use of U.S. aid to finance human rights 
violations. Both the seizure of Palestinian land and collective punishment 
of Palestinian civilians, which are illegal under the Geneva Conventions, 
are made
possible by U.S. military and economic aid.

"Israel does not use U.S. aid for the purposes of advancing democracy and 
freedom. U.S. aid both directly and indirectly supports the military
infrastructure enabling mass detentions and killings of Palestinian 
civilians, as well as the destruction of Palestinian society. As Jews 
around the world voice their opposition to this war against a civilian 
population, United States
tax dollars perpetuate it," says Rebecca Levitsky of New York City.

Challenging Senator Lieberman’s position that the Israeli occupation is 
necessary, New York City resident Karen Goldman observes, "Lieberman has
characterized ending Israel’s military violence as ‘a crime of weakness’ 
and affirms an unconditional ‘special relationship’ between the U.S. and 
Israel. We must sever this relationship until Israel demonstrates a true 
interest in
peace and fair negotiation. As Israeli officials speak more and more of 
their intentions to engage in massive ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from 
the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, we cannot allow the United States 
to continue to support the greatest crimes of this conflict."

group! This group was recently created by a non-monogamist anarchist
couple desiring to create a forum where all self-identified anarchists
believing in any form of non-monogamy or polyamory can get together
and share ideas, concerns and feelings relating to these two topics.
We encourage most kinds of associated dialogue, such as--

- feelings or problems regarding one's personal anarchism or
non-monogamy
- theoretical connections between non-monogamy and anarchy/anarchism

We want to make this a safe place for open and honest communication
(necessary for non-monogamy, and, for us, anarchy), particularly since
we all have extraordinarily radical ideas in comparison to the culture

world. Sectarianism, dogmatism, in-fighting and bickering between
different anarchist factions will not be tolerated here. Likewise, all

including accusations like, "But you're not a *real* anarchist." That
has no place here. We feel that such behavior disrupts the possibility

I have been an anarchist since May 2001, during which period "smash
the state" has been a continuously running mantra in my head. I
consider that I've been non-monogamous since November 2002. Right now
that's the focus of my anarchism--I really feel that I've begun to
live anarchy as a result of this change in my perspective. I've read
the book "The Ethical Slut" and I think it's the greatest thing since
sliced bread--and kind of consider it my bible. I used to be an
English major, and I still enjoy literature (of course) and am also a
bit of an internet junkie. Wilhelm and I recently started studying
Nonviolent Communication, and I'm really excited about it. I think
it's a great tool for non-monogamist practice, and for the rest of
day-to-day life as well. I'm excited to see what kind of discussion
unfolds here!

I have been an anarchist for about seven years and have read
thoroughly on the subject. During most of this time I have considered
the areas of psychology and interpersonal relations to be a very
important area for anarchists to focus on. However most of that was
just lip service; I usually never really gave it much thought or
attention. Since being with Diane I have really fleshed out my
understanding of what anarchist psychology and interpersonal relations
is all about and have begun looking into things like emotional
intelligence, radical honesty, nonviolent communication, autonomy
respecting relationships and now, of course, non-monogamy. I now
consider a uniquely anarchist interpersonal relations to be absolutely
essential and of primary importance for anarchy.

Organizers' Conference and Winter Rendezvous near warm and wild Santa Cruz, 
California, on February 14-17. There will be exciting discussions centered 
around movement building and strategy, as well as time set aside for skills 
sharing and fireside fun. Join with other like minded people in building a 
stronger Earth centered movement. If you live far away pool resources and 
sent one representative from your local group or bioregion. We need to hear 
what's going on in your neck of the movement!
The focus of this year's conference will be "Safety and Effectiveness." We 
will focus on direct action safety as well as the strategy and skills our 
movement needs to be more effective. With the recent, tragic deaths of two 
treesitters, Horehound and Naya, the importance of proper training will be 
stressed. Experienced trainers will be onsite to review training 
techniques, nonviolence tactics and movement building skills.
It is no secret that the organizing committee, Santa Cruz EF!, has been 
dealt heavy blows this year, including Naya's death and the devastation at 
Ramsey Gulch. Despite this, and because of this, we welcome the opportunity 
to invite folks from different regions and struggles around the world to 
our home to discuss many of the important issues facing our movement in

OUR CAMP Home to some of the oldest, grandest and tallest trees, a land of 
deserts and the Pacific Ocean coast, California is remarkable in its 
diversity. We will be camping at Arroyo Seco, just east of the Ventana 
Wilderness. There are trails for hiking, and the brave can swim or raft in 
the Arroyo Seco River. The daytime temperatures may get into the 70s with 
overnight lows down to slightly below freezing. We will be in a US Forest 
Service campground, so water and toilet facilities will be available. The 
group campsite can hold 50 people (with a 10 car limit), and there will be 
additional campsites with 10 people per site (three cars maximum), a short 
walk away.
GRUB, FIRE AND FUN We are working to set up a community kitchen but be 
prepared to cook your own food in the event that doesn't work out. You 
should also be prepared to keep your food safe from local critters, 
including the occasional black bear. The Warrior Poets Society's annual 
"Night to Howl" will be on February 16. Poets, singers, musicians, 
rabble-rousers and ranters are invited to share their work. Please bring 
dry firewood so we can have warm nights around the campfire. Don't bring 
weapons, drugs, unruly pets or bad attitudes. There will be rangers driving 
around the camp area, so behave yourself or keep well out of sight.
THINGS WE NEED! We are still looking for some things to pull off this 
conference. If you can provide them please let us know as soon as possible. 
The main things we need are more tarps and tents, $ and climbing gear. We 
also need you to spread the word and bring your friends! Whether its

FINALLY: THE TRUTH ABOUT THE MURDER OF SAMORA MACHEL
On June 25th, 1975 thousands cheered as Mozambicans celebrated their
independence from over 400 years of Portuguese rule. Soldiers from
the revolutionary army, Frelimo raised their weapons in triumph.
Peasants saluted their new flag of green, black and yellow. Samora
Machel, Mozambique's new president declared, " Our perspective is to
form a new society in Mozambique. Our options are various: in the
first place we want to wipe out misery which in our country means
hunger, lack of hospitals, and products. We are against
exploitation." If there's one thing Machel understood about a
successful revolution against the Portuguese, is that it had to have
the complete support of the people it sought to liberate. For that
reason the liberation strategy that Samora and Frelimo put into
motion succeeded; Mozambique's' was a people's revolution, and
Frelimo the people's army.
In October of 1986 Machel died in a "mysterious" plane crash on South
African soil. Now, a former member of an apartheid death squad has
confirmed that the death of Mozambique's first president was not an
accident, but murder. The man making this revelation is a Namibian
national, Hans Louw, who was once a member of the notorious Civil
Cooperation Bureau (CCB). Despite its innocuous name, this body was
one of the most sinister of the apartheid regime's special units,
dedicated to clandestine operations, up to and including murder,
against the regime's opponents. Louw is currently serving a 28 year
term for murders not connected with the CCB, in Baviaanspoort Prison
near Pretoria. Louw claims that he was part of a "clean-up team"
whose job was to go to the crash site, and finish off the Mozambican
President if he survived the disaster. In fact, the back-up team was
not activated, because the original plan - to lure the plane off
course by using a false navigation beacon - worked, and Machel died
on impact, as the presidential aircraft smashed into a bleak hillside
at Mbuzini. Louw said the false beacon was put in position by members
of the apartheid regime's Military Intelligence. A second man, Edwin
Mudingi, says now that he was also part of the operation, and
confirmed that Louw was on the team. Mudingi's unsavoury past
includes membership of the Selous Scouts, a unit in the armed forces
of the illegal Rhodesian regime of Ian Smith that was responsible for
many atrocities.
Samora Machel was an internationalist. He supported and allowed
revolutionaries fighting white minority regimes in Rhodesia and South
Africa to operate within Mozambique and he earned their wrath in
return. Frelimo deputy Rafael Maguni just last October told the
Mozambican parliament "The conspiracy of which Samora was a victim
was an expression of the destabilization strategy used by the
apartheid regime in the region, which sought to block the African
National Congress (ANC), and had our country as a major target". At
the time of that speech Maguni predicted that the truth of the murder
of Samora Machel would come out. Today, he has been proven right.

NASHVILLE - Why don't people vote their own self-interest?
Every few years the Republicans propose a tax cut, and every few years the
Democrats pull out their income distribution charts to show that much of
the benefits of the Republican plan go to the richest 1 percent of
Americans or thereabouts. And yet every few years a Republican plan wends
its way through the legislative process and, with some trims and
amendments, passes.
The Democrats couldn't even persuade people to oppose the repeal of the
estate tax, which is explicitly for the mega-upper class. Al Gore, who ran
a populist campaign, couldn't even win the votes of white males who didn't
go to college, whose incomes have stagnated over the past decades and who
were the explicit targets of his campaign. Why don't more Americans want to
distribute more wealth down to people like themselves?
Well, as the academics would say, it's overdetermined. There are several
reasons.
People vote their aspirations.
The most telling polling result from the 2000 election was from a Time
magazine survey that asked people if they are in the top 1 percent of
earners. Nineteen percent of Americans say they are in the richest 1
percent and a further 20 percent expect to be someday. So right away you
have 39 percent of Americans who thought that when Mr. Gore savaged a plan
that favored the top 1 percent, he was taking a direct shot at them.

ADL Alerts Federal Government Terrorists May Use "E-Currency" to Transfer 
Funds on Internet
New York, NY, January 21, 2003 … As the government moves to freeze the 
finances of terror groups and their supporters, the Anti-Defamation League 
(ADL) today alerted the U.S. Customs Service that terrorists may seek to 
conceal financial transactions using a unique form of online currency.

The potential abuse by terrorists of an Internet currency that enables 
deposits and transfers of precious metals using online trading accounts, 
"merits serious attention" by those government agencies who track sources 
of terrorist financing, said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.

"While we know of no links between e-currency and terrorism at the present 
time, e-currency merits serious attention given the record of Internet use 
by terrorists and the abuse of similar devices by domestic extremists," 
said Mr. Foxman.

In a letter to U.S. Customs Commissioner Robert C. Bonner, ADL said that 
terrorists may find e-currency appealing because it enables large amounts 
of currency to be exchanged electronically without leaving a record of the 
transaction. Because of its anonymity, economists and Secret Service 
officials have recently expressed concern about the potential for money 
laundering using e-currency channels.

About half of the system's physical reserves are located in Dubai, United 
Arab Emirates, apparently for financial reasons, but also to help in the 
marketing of e-dinar, which was launched in September 2000. E-dinar is 
affiliated with the Islamic Mint, a private organization dedicated to 
reviving gold and silver currencies described in the Quran.

guards reduce men to sniveling, quivering jellyfish -- like the parole 
board wants -- or are some of these prisoners harboring a seething rage, a 
hatred and lust for revenge so deep that citizens will have to pay with 
their lives when these men get out? The justification for the death penalty 
in some minds is "At least they can't kill again." But most of the men in 
High Security will get out..."

Standing Deer Wilson. As many of you know, Standing Deer was a close friend 
and brother to Leonard Peltier for the past 25 years.
He had long been a vocal supporter for Leonard, and in the past year 
assisted in organizing Houston events and radio programs dedicated to 
Leonard's freedom. More recently, Standing Deer joined the LPDC's Board of 
Directors and was an active member. The LPDC is saddened and greatly 
regrets his passing. More information will be forthcoming as details are

Man, 70, found stabbed to death in townhouse
An elderly southwest Houston man was found stabbed to death in his townhome 
Tuesday.
A man visiting Robert Hugh Wilson, 70, called 911 after discovering his 
body in the bedroom of the home in the 11000 block of Chimney Rock shortly 
after 7 a.m., police said.
Nothing appeared missing, detectives said, but the back door was pried open 
and there were signs of a struggle. "It looks like (the assailant) took the 
murder weapon with him," said homicide Sgt. Doug Bacon.
Police hadn't determined the motive for the city's 13th reported homicide 
this year.

Yanner attacks Australia Day plan

FIERY Aboriginal activist Murrandoo Yanner has denounced Aboriginal 
involvement in Australia Day, saying there is no reason for indigenous 
people to celebrate when they find themselves excluded for the rest of the 
year.

The former ATSIC commissioner said yesterday January 26 should remain as 
"invasion day" until indigenous inequalities were overcome.
"What the hell is there to celebrate on one day of the year when the other 
364 days in the year you're f...ed over by the same system you're 
celebrating?" Mr Yanner said yesterday from Burketown in north-west 
Queensland.

"We have got nothing to celebrate other than survival. So f... Australia Day."

Mr Yanner's comments were in response to Brisbane Council of Elders 
chairman Herb Bligh who has urged Aborigines to take part in official 
Australia Day celebrations this weekend in the name of reconciliation.
Mr Bligh stood by his comments yesterday and said he had received a lot of 
support for his position.

Mr Bligh, who says Aboriginal participation in the Australia Day ceremony 
is "long overdue", has been supported by north Queensland ATSIC leader 
Terry O'Shane, who says the past should be left behind.

But Mr Yanner said the only Aboriginal people embracing Australia Day were 
those who had benefited from the system.

"It's alright if you've done well," he said.

"But you won't see too many poor blackfellas saying let's celebrate 
Australia Day."

Mr Yanner said indigenous people needed to be properly included in the 
country's economic, social and political systems.

He said a treaty between black and white Austraia would help reverse some

Hi Michael

You are not alone in recommending closer collaboration between
different groups within our sector - although I would hesitate to
include any group that envisages any kind role for a state in the
future society, in our sector. Cooperation should be predicated on
the understanding that we are working towards a society in which
there is neither a state nor a market - the tweedledum and tweedledee
of global capitalism
The groups that fall within this sector are diverse and many. It is
clear to me that none can claim a monopoly on the truth and that
there is unlikely to be just one particular right approach to
realising a non-market non-statist future. We need to begin to think
in terms of a pluralistic model of social transformation in which
different approaches are seen as complementary rather than competing
The WSM's own approach of "abstract propagandism" coupled with
electoralism certainly has an important role to play in all this but
clearly it is only one peice of a much larger jigsaw. If the WSM did
have all the answers then clearly it would be a very much larger
organisation than it is and we would be far closer to socialism than
we are. As it is. after nearly 100 years of existence it is fair to
say the organisation is barely managing to survive . Which is a great
pity given the enormous amount of effort its members have devoted to
the organisation in the past.

I and others in the World in Common group would very much like to see
closer cooperation between the WSM and other groups in our sector.
Of course there are important differences between these groups but
even more important are the commonalities that we share. This is
something we can all imaginatively build upon given the will to do so.
However I do not consider it is remotely plausible or even desirable
for everyone in our sector to constitute themselves into one single
organisational entity. Even if this were formed it would very soon
succumb to demoralising schisms. A much preferable approach is a
federalistic one which allows for theoretical and practical
differences between groups and yet faciliates a degree of cooperation
between them that is presently barely in evidence
At the end of the day if we don't learn to extend the hand of
friendship and solidarity to others in our sector we will remain as
we are - a small and ineffectual movement wracked by tribalistic and
sectarian infighting.

Rivkin mounts raid on Securenet's $70m cash

Securenet is finding that having too much cash can be as much of a problem 
for a struggling tech stock as having too little.

A group of the e-security company's shareholders, led by Rene Rivkin, 
formally launched a move on Securenet's $70 million cash reserves yesterday.

The shareholders have requested a general meeting to vote on handing $68 
million of the company's cash back to shareholders at 90c a share - which 
represents the majority of the company's market value at yesterday's 
closing price of $1.03.

"This is not a Farooq Khan type deal," Mr Rivkin said, with reference to 
the Perth businessman who is well known for raiding struggling tech 
companies to gain control of their cash reserves. He said the company was 
informed of the shareholders' intentions last week.

Securenet's shares traded as low as 70c in November, representing a 
substantial discount to its cash backing. A business valued at a negative 
figure by the market should not have $86 million in the bank, Mr Rivkin said.
The proposal is intended to leave the company with $18 million for 
operations, according to Mr Rivkin. But Securenet reported cash reserves of 
only about $70 million at the end of December last year, which means it 
will be left with substantially less.

The company is arguing that the money will be needed to fund its strong 
organic growth this year, technology licensing costs, and further 
acquisitions in a market where tech valuations have hit rock bottom.

Securenet released a market update last week - one month ahead of its half 
year results - confirming it was on track to double revenues and break even 
for the year.

"These financial statements will demonstrate significant earnings 
improvement in the first half of 2003," said Securenet chairman David 
Greatorex.

Securenet has struggled in recent years, the shares dropping from a peak of 
more than $15 in March 2000.

The market would come back when it understood the company was operating in 
"a very hot sector" of the market, said Securenet managing director 
Geoffrey Ross.

Last year Securenet reported a loss of more than $50 million, including $43 
million in extraordinary items.

Russia Military See U.S. Iraq Attack in Feb -Report

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's armed forces have obtained information that the 
United States and its allies have already decided to launch military action 
in Iraq from mid-February, news agency Interfax said on Wednesday.
The agency's specialist military news wire AVN, quoting an unnamed 
high-ranking source in the Russian general staff, said U.S.-led operations 
would be launched once an attacking force of 150,000 had been assembled in 
the Gulf.
"According to the information we have, the operation is planned for the 
second half of February. The decision to launch it has been taken but not 
yet been made public," the source told the agency, which has generally 
authoritative contacts in the Russian military and political establishment.
The source added that the main aim of the war would be to secure control of 
Iraqi oilfields.
It was not indicated by what means the Russian military had obtained such 
information -- it was not clear if it had been acquired covertly by Russian 
intelligence services or by a direct tip-off from Washington, which would 
be keen to avoid any misunderstandings with Moscow if it does launch a war.
The United States says it is building up a force estimated to reach more 
than 150,000 by the end of next month. Britain is sending a further 30,000 
troops. No other allies have come forward with significant military 
commitments so far and some, notably France, Germany and Russia are against 
rapid action.
"The military operation against Iraq will be conducted by a combination of 
means -- strikes will be from the air, land and sea. The war will be short, 
lasting about one month," the Russian source was quoted as saying.
The source added that the main aim of the operation was not so much to 
topple Iraqi President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) but to secure U.S. 
control over Iraqi oilfields.
"Hussein is the pretext. The real aim of the military action is control 
over Iraqi oil," he said.
Russia, together with France which is also a permanent member of the U.N. 
Security Council, are cautioning against U.S action in Iraq now while U.N. 
arms inspectors are continuing to search for evidence of weapons of mass 
destruction there.
Russia has a major commercial interest in Iraqi oil and has made clear its 
eagerness to exploit Iraq's huge reserves once U.N. sanctions on Saddam are 
lifted.
This is another reason why the global mobilization against war on February

The wrestler Shawn Michaels has sent a cease and desist to Sean Michaels 
demanding that he not use that name. The wrestler (real name Michael Sean 
Hickenbottom) is claiming to own the trademark and wants Sean Michaels to 
relinquish the name and the website www.seanmichaels.com.
Look for this to grow into a media event, it has all the trappings of good 
tabloid TV. A Black guy and a white guy, a wrestler and a porn star, 
ratings gold.
Word is that Sean (The pornstar) is going to counter sue and ask that Shawn 
(the wrestler) use another name.
I'm no legal authority but my basic copyright law knowledge tells me that 
whoever had the first commercial use owns the trademark, registered or not..
I believe that they both actually started using the name around the same 
timethe mid 1980s but my gut tells me that Sean the pornstar beat Shawn 
the wrestler to the punch by a few years.
If my college classes from years ago on patent and trademark law were 
correct there is also a stipulation that if you do not attempt to protect 
your trademark it can fall into public domain, so waiting 15 years or more 
to try and strip Sean of his name prolly won't sit well in the judges eyes.
My prediction both guys will still use the name and Sean will keep his website.
Sadly it is gonna cost Sean to defend this attack. If there is justice 
Shawn should have to pay all attorneys fees and court costs if he 
looses...Indeed I expect he is trying to bully Sean into giving up the name 
by out spending him.

the highest bidder, award-winning investigative journalist Greg Palast has 
uncovered disturbing evidence confirming as much. Palast's exposés of the 
theft of the 2000 election, the financial ties between the Bush and the Bin 
Laden families, and how these connections kept the FBI from perhaps 
preventing the horrific events of 9/11 have thrown fear into the hearts of 
media pundits. There has been a near-complete news blackout of the 
explosive findings documented in Palast's book, The Best Democracy Money 
Can Buy. First released in England, where he reports for the BBC and The 
Guardian, Palast's collection of writings is finally being published in 
America by Penguin/Plume books with 40% new material. In an exclusive 
HUSTLER interview, the author discloses the truth on high crimes in high 
places that the mainstream media is afraid to touch.

HUSTLER: Tell us about your new book. I know you've been able to get your 
groundbreaking exposés published in England and Europe, but, up until now, 
your stuff has been too controversial for the American media to touch.

PALAST: Not a chance in America, until now, thanks to the book.

HUSTLER: What kind of material do you have in the book?

PALAST: How about this for an example: After Daddy Bush left the White 
House, he went to work for a company called Barrick Gold Corporation in 
Canada, something you haven't read in the United States. The first thing he 
does is pick up a big, fat check and stock options from Barrick Gold 
Corporation for, essentially, selling them the presidential seal and the 
presidential Rolodex. And he writes letters to dictators like [former 
president of Indonesia] Suharto, saying, "Give these nice guys gold-mining 
concessions."

HUSTLER: What is Barrick Gold?

PALAST: It was founded with money from Adnan Khashoggi, the arms dealer. 
You may remember that Adnan was the bagman in the guns-for-hostages, 
Iran-Contra scandal. The sheikh got out, then Bush got in. You have to ask 
yourself a question: What would a Canadian gold-mining company do with a 
used president? Well, it turns out that before he left office, Daddy Bush 
put in motion an expedited process for laying claims to gold in the United 
States. It allowed Barrick Gold Corporation and a couple of other operators 
to lay claim to the largest gold mines in America. To stake a claim on $10 
billion worth of gold ore, Barrick paid the U.S. Treasury less than $10,000.

HUSTLER: I would have gone for that, myself. I could have scraped together 
$10,000.

PALAST: All I can say is that Barrick was very, very grateful for the gold 
mine. But the public got the shaft, and Daddy Bush got the job. And George 
W. got the donations. That's the other thing that has been unreported here: 
People don't realize how much easy squeezy [campaign money] is flowing in. 
That includes things like parallel spending and soft money and hard money, 
which, by the way, hasn't ended. You know that our Congress has passed 
campaign-finance reform, so-called. What they did was eliminate soft money, 
but they doubled the amount of hard money. It's just Viagra for campaign 
donations. Our big problem is that we held something closer to an auction 
than an election in America. A lot of the reason [George W.] Bush raised 
all that cash-that easy squeezy-is because of his father's business 
connections. You're never quite sure where the Bush family's bank account 
ends, and the campaigns and our American policy begins.

HUSTLER: Did Barrick get anything else from Bush Sr.?

PALAST: He helped Barrick secure a gold-mining concession in Tanzania. Now 
the gold-mining concession was owned by another Canadian company, named 
Sutton, which Barrick hoped to get the rights from. But there was a 
problem: The land was worthless, because there were Tanzanian miners 
already on it who had the rights to the mine. That's why, in the first week 
of August 1996, Sutton bulldozers ran across that property with military 
police firing guns to chase off the miners. In the process, they sealed up 
the mine pits and, unfortunately, there were 50 miners still in the mines, 
buried alive, say witnesses. That's information that has not been reported 
in the United States. You can't get that word out for nothing, because 
Bush's gold-mining company terrorizes journalists who dare breathe a word 
about it. They terrorize newspapers; they've been terrorizing wire 
services, and so you don't get the story.

HUSTLER: They threaten legal action?

PALAST: They threaten legal action, and they bring legal action. They sued 
my paper, The Guardian; they said it's all a lie. That's the most 
prestigious newspaper in the world. They tried to get me to back up and say 
that no one died. I held firm, and there was nothing that they could do. I 
wasn't in Tanzania, and I didn'

IN 1908, THE GREAT CATALONIAN ARCHITECT Antonio Gaudi was retained to 
design a grand hotel for New York City. The location chosen was the site 
upon which the-twin-towered World Trade Center would eventually be built 
between 1962 and 1974. This American patron of Gaudi was an extremely 
affluent financier who actually owned the land bounded on the north by 
Vesey Street, on the south by Liberty Street, on the east by Church Street, 
and on the west by West Street (which later became connected with the West 
Side Highway). Of course, at the beginning of the 20th century, the 
financier's actual land holdings were not as sharply defined by streets as 
the World Trade Center would become. Then the lower west side of Manhattan 
was zoned for low residential and light commercial buildings, such as shops 
that sold parts for wireless telegraphy and crystal sets. How the landowner 
came to believe he could obtain a zoning variance that would allow him to 
build what would have been the first really tall skyscraper for New York 
City remains only one of the many mysteries surrounding this project. 
Perhaps the fact that the American architect Cass Gilbert (1859-1934) had 
just finished a modest-sized gothic skyscraper on West Street (1905-07), a 
trial run for the huge Woolworth Building (1911-13) built on Broadway near 
City Hall Park, that became the financier's impetus.

Charges falsely levied against Jeremy Rochelle, 21, San Francisco, and 
Jonah Zern, 25, Oakland, at Saturdays major anti-war rally in San Francisco 
have been dismissed. The two were held in SF City jail for two days and 
released on Martin Luther King Day on their Own Recognizance. The charges 
are dismissed pending investigation, a normal charge for protest dismissals 
that give the District Attorney the right to re-introduce charges for one 
year.

The community with national and international support played a major role 
in supporting Rochelle and Zern, both while they were in prison and once 
they were released. Supporters made calls of support to the District 
Attorney, Mayor and the Jail and organized a rally of approximately 60 
people outside the jail calling for their release. The Guild recognizes 
that courts are more likely to do the right thing if people create the 
political climate for them to do so. Said Riva Enteen of the National 
Lawyers Guild.

Supporters expressed concern that Zern and Rochelles arrests were 
politically motivated. Many police were seen watching protestors committing 
illegal actions, while Zern and Rochelle who had done nothing, but are 
prominent activists in the Bay Area were targeted. â?? Post 9-11 is not a 
war against terrorism its a war against dissent, there are serious attacks 
against constitutional rights of speech and association. said Enteen

Zern, a substitute teacher in Oakland, further expressed concern that money 
diverted from social spending to a war on Iraq would also lead to deepening 
poverty and more prisoners. Most people I met in prison had committed 
either crimes of poverty or were singled out as black people. I want to 
make sure that my arrest helps to shine a spotlight on the bigger issues of 
the prison industry and how deeply it is hurting communities of color. If 
the United States goes to war with Iraq, money will be taken away from poor 
communities and will lead to even worse conditions and more prisoners.

dollars. But he reckons 'gonzo marketing' could still lead a renaissance,

One of the things Chris Locke has never told me - and this is remarkable 
from a man famous for interviewing a talking horse - is that if only people 
had listened to him, the "internet bubble" might never have happened. It is 
still not too late for big companies to save themselves billions of 
dollars. The problem is that most of them don't understand what he's saying.
It's not hard: it just doesn't fit their preconceptions. Locke's message is 
that the internet is not a mass medium, so mass marketing and advertising 
based on the old, broadcast model are counterproductive. All those internet 
business plans based on "aggregating eyeballs" are doomed to fail. The web 
is not print, and it's not becoming television.
Even if everyone gets high-speed fibre to their home, with the net carrying 
digital radio and TV-quality pictures, it doesn't restore the broadcast 
model's power. "I have a rap here," says Locke, throwing his arms in the 
air. "Broadcast - broadband - some people think it's the same thing. Video 
on demand! It's a jukebox! But we still have this bottom up effect on the 
net, and the technology to create movies has gotten way cheap, dudes. So 
you are not going to be limited to Hollywood blockbusters, you're going to 
get lots of 10 minute videos - Atomfilms - and that's going to erode your 
market.
You can broaden the pipe as far as you want, but if everybody can play, 
it's not broadcast any more. There isn't that control of the passes. The 
channel is out of control and that makes it a different game."
What replaces mass market, broadcast advertising is Locke's "gonzo 
marketing", which is not really marketing but "market advocacy" through 
participation, sponsorship and support. The internet replaces the 
us-and-them relationship (creative people broadcasting to couch potatoes) 
with a network of conversations, which is all markets are, really.
It's the difference between a media empire such as AOL CNN IPC Time Warner 
and 100 million bloggers. The explosion in the popularity of blogging, 
peer-to-peer file-sharing, cooperative (open source) programming and 
similar movements means Locke's ideas are now being taken seriously by 
major corporations including merchant banks and the BBC, the latter having 
paid for his latest trip to London. But he has been saying the same things 
for at least eight years, both as a big company employee and as RageBoy, a 
"seriously maladjusted mental case and towering egomaniac with an advanced 
case of Tourette syndrome".
RageBoy is the alter ego who can, and must, break the unwritten rules that 
govern the way things are done. His success shows that "winning through 
worst practices" - the subtitle of Locke's book, Gonzo Marketing - works on 
the web. RageBoy didn't exist eight years ago, but Alan Meckler did. I know 
because I met him at the first internet trade show he held in the UK in 
March 1994. Guardian's Online had yet to be launched, and I was struggling 
to describe Mosaic, the first popular browser, and explain how the world 
wide web worked. Meckler, who published the first internet magazine, told 
me all about a project this guy Chris Locke was developing: MecklerWeb.
It would be the web's first cybermall or portal. I felt like a Tiger Moth 
pilot being shown a thumbnail of Boeing's plans for the 747. MecklerWeb 
crashed and burned on the runway, possibly because Meckler engaged reverse 
thrust during take-off. Gordon Cook, editor and publisher of the Cook 
Report, summed it up at the time: "On Friday October 14, 1994 Alan Meckler 
remade MecklerWeb into the very hardcopy-publishing, advertising-based 
structure that Chris Locke, its creator had said could never work in the 
new electronic world of the Internet. Indeed MecklerWeb will now be run on 
the very attributes of print publishing that Locke set out to prove no 
longer viable when he created it."
Locke went to Internet-MCI "to try to float the same kind of notion", he 
says, but by that time, the media companies - Murdoch's News Corporation, 
Time Warner, Disney, etc - were starting to appear on the web. "They said, 
'Of course we know it's not television', but they still had the broadcast 
mentality," says Locke. "It's all about we-tell-you content that's 
developed behind the scenes at high cost and then shot out through cannons, 
and the whole purpose is to have a carrier wave for advertising.
"The broadcast model is command and control: from the inside it's work 
orders come from the top, check your brain at the door, shut up and do what 
you're told," he adds. "With respect to the outside, it's: 'Buy our 
fabulous product, do it today!' But it's the same voice of command and 
control: "You're going to do what we tell you.' And the internet just goes

Fear and Pain in Paya, Attack Leaves Four Dead

Four Kuna indigenous authorities were assassinated this weekend
and two US and one Canadian reporter were kidnapped by a Colombian
paramilitary group that attacked the villages of Paya and Pucuro, in the
Darien, this past weekend.
A group of 150 paramilitaries assassinated the leaders of the
Kuna Paya village Ernesto Ayala, mayor; San Pascual Ayala, second mayor,
and Luis Enrique Mart**nez, village commissioner. One of the US reporters
is Robert Pelton of the Discovery Channel.

According to local witness Luis Caicedo, "We found three corpses
chopped up by machetes with bullets in their head in the mountains so we
couldn't take the corpses back because the land was still being guarded
by the paramilitaries."

Gilberto Vasquez, mayor of Vasquez, was also murdered. His body
was found with a bullet in the back of his head inside his house in the
village.

This same paramilitary brigade had captured, just hours before,
the US Discovery Channel reporter Robert Pelton and two other reporters,
Marc Wedever of Canada, and another US journalist that is unidentified.

Migdonio Batista, a correspondent for the radio station Voices
without Borders of the Darien, who resides in Paya indicated that the
paramilitaries, in addition to killing the village authorities, robbed
all of the belongings of the only radio station office in the village.
He also said that the armed paramilitaries robbed the chickens, ducks
and pigs and murdered the dogs. Upon leaving the village they dropped
explosives in local trucks so that they could get away without being
followed.

Another resident, Victor Maritinez, explained that since last
Saturday afternoon, when they were attacked by the Colombian
paramilitaries, the residents have not eaten anything and have only
drank water from the river. Also, as of 48 hours after the weekends
murders the National Police had not arrived with any help or protection.
The "Prensa" newspaper confirmed that as of two days after the attack
there was still no response from the border patrol.

Isidro Ayala, whose father was assassinated in this attack,
explained that the indigenous had to confront the paramilitaries with
bows and arrows and with wooden beams to defend their property and
families "because there hasn't been any police in this place for two
years."

Paya is a community with 530 indigenous residents located in the
mountains of Pinogana and about 2 hours from the Colombian border. After
the attack, there was only 50 residents remaining in Paya. The rest of
the town was seeking refuge in the Boca de Cupe community or in the
nearby mountains. Pucuro, a close by village, was entirely abandoned by
its 20 residents. The paramilitaries arrived in Pucuro, burnt 5 houses
down, and after finding no residents assassinated Gilberto Vasquez, who
had been taken prisoner in Paya.

ACERCA/ASEJ received this action alert from The Kuna Youth
Indigenous Movement asking for international solidarity to conndemn the
violence of Plan Colombia that has contributed to this murder of

Future War: Non-Lethal Weapons in Twenty-First Century Warfare
by Colonel John B. Alexander, US Army (Retired)
(1999, St. Martin's Press, 254 pp.. $24.95)

Colonel John Alexander never met a war he didn't like.

As an unofficial spokesman for the Military-Industrial Complex, Alexander
has written a book called Future War in which he continues to ply his
trade -- promoting war -- and most importantly advocating those
all-important expendables called "weapons systems."

The oxymoronic "non-lethal weapons" which Alexander touts are anything but.
They include exotic systems like electromagnetic weapons, chemical and
biological warfare, so-called physical restraints like goop guns, etc.,
acoustic weapons, as well as information warfare technologies, which include
good old-fashioned military propaganda -- like his book itself.

Without questioning the wrong-headed abstruse US Government policies of
war-making, he includes a brief history of War's Greatest Hits in a chapter
called "Are We the World's Police Force?"

Alexander's answer is an unequivocal yes. These include -- Restore Hope:
Somalia; United Shield: Somalia Round II; Uphold Democracy: Haiti; Bosnia;
The Idaho Rebellion (just kidding).

Internet Bashing
In a chapter called "Information Warfare," Alexander sounds the alarm
about -- you guessed -it -- the "dangers of the Internet." You see, those
nasty hackers, crackers and phrackers are out to get the Information
Infrastructure.

How do we know? Alexander says so. "It is predicted that anti-hacker
software sales will increase from $1.1 billion in 1995 to greater than $16
billion in 2000," he writes. "The President's Committee of Critical
Infrastructure Protection noted the increased likelihood of computer
terrorism and recommended that research and development, now $250 million
annually, should be increased $100 million per year until $12 billion is
provided on a yearly basis."

No matter what the "security" problem, all we need to do is spend more
taxpayer dollars on the Military-Industrial Complex.

Secret Life of John Alexander
Virtually disregarded in this book is Alexander's spooky background as a
Psy0ps (or psychological operations) expert, as well as a psychic warfare-
mind control operative.

According to Alex Constantine, author of Virtual Government (Feral House,
1997), Colonel John Alexander has displayed a long term interest in the
paranormal and "has actively promoted psychic metal bending among government
personnel using the techniques pioneered by Jack Houck of
McDonnell-Douglas."

Before his "retirement," Alexander had a 32-year career in the Army,
including a stint as director of Advanced Systems Concepts Office, US Army
Laboratory Command Alexander was also chief of the Advanced Human Technology
Office & Security Command (INSCOM) and ran the "non-lethal" weapons lab at
Los Alamos in New Mexico.

Alexander allegedly also has a doctor's degree in thanatology, the science
of death.

British reporter Armen Victorian concludes that John B. Alexander is an
active operative assigned to a covert military group "specializing in
dissemination of disinformation," collectively known as the "Aviary." In a
recent interview, David Morehouse, author of Psychic Warrior, (St. Martin's
Press, 1996) reports that "Alexander was a Special Forces officer in Vietnam
who commanded a Montagnard battalion. Others say he was a member of the
Phoenix Project [the notorious CIA assassination program]. When he came out,
he worked with the intelligence community and he never left."

Later Alexander led a CIA harassment campaign against Morehouse. Alexander,
the "retired" colonel working for the CIA, Jim Schnabel and Joe McMoneagle
were all actively involved in spreading disinformation Campaign against him
on the Internet, says Morehouse.

Politically Incorrect Warrior
And why was Morehouse harassed? Morehouse was a whistleblower who wrote a
book called Non Lethal Weapons: War Without Death (1996, Greenwood
Publishing) with a politically incorrect perspective. "Conventional weaponry
is designed to kill. The new hybrid conventional weaponry is designed to
maim. Non-lethal weaponry, by this definition, must be anti-materiel and not
anti-personnel," said Morehouse in a recorded interview.

"My book takes a very philosophical approach to the concept of non-
lethality," Morehouse continues. "It talks about what conventional weapons
have done in this century. They've taken the lives of 170 million innocent
human beings' lives -- doctors, lawyers, professors, housewives, children --
not warriors. 80 million of them were summarily execut

TURKEY: Conscientious objector Mehmet Bal arrested again


Turkish conscientious objector Mehmet Bal was arrested again yesterday. 
Three officers of JITEM, the secrect service of the Turkish gendarmie, 
visited the place where he was staying, and demanded that he followed them. 
It could be observed that they left the house, and met a police van parked 
around the corner. There they had a discussion with the police, which 
didn't want to arrest Mehmet Bal. For a couple of hours his whereabouts 
were unknown - something even more worrying as JITEM is known for torture 
and unlawful executions.
Later it was found out that Mehmet Bal was at the recruitment office in 
Yenisehir. Four lawyers went their and demanded to talk to him, which was 
only granted after two hours of discussion, and a phone conversation 
between the highest military prosecutor and the chairperson of the lawyers 
chamber. They were only allowed to see him for 10 minutes.
Mehmet Bal declared himself a conscientious objector on 24 October 2002, 
and announced that he was not willing to continue to serve in the military. 
He presented himself on the next day, and was arrest (see TK12718-251002). 
He refused to wear a uniform, and was severly mistreated. In protest he 
started a hunger strike (see TK12718-011102).
On 27 November, Mehmet Bal was released, and got order to present himself 
to the recruitment office. There he got order to report to "his" unit 
within two days - which he didn't do.


The whole process of his arrest is very unusual. Normally a deserter would 
be arrested by the police.


Mehmet Bal's situation is not yet clear. Mehmet is in good spirit, and 
decided not to eat for the time being - until his situation is clear.

authorities, demanding the recognition of Mehmet Bal's human right to 
conscientious objection.

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- With U.S. forces building in the Gulf, Iraq's neighbors 
prepared to meet Thursday to discuss ways to avert a war and likely urge 
Baghdad to cooperate more with U.N. arms inspectors.

Turkey, anxious to demonstrate to its public that it is doing all it can to 
avoid a conflict, was to host the foreign ministers of Iraq's neighbors -- 
Iran, Syria and Jordan -- as well as Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

"I don't agree with the assumption that there will definitely be a war," 
Turkish Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis said in a newspaper interview. "Peace 
could still be salvaged. War could still be prevented."

To achieve peace, Iraq had to be more "proactive" with U.N. weapons 
inspectors, he said, adding that Baghdad could guide them to weapons sites 
in an effort to show that Iraq is not a threat.

Turkish and Arab diplomats have stressed that the delegates will not call 
for Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein to step down and go into exile as a way of 
avoiding war.

"Such issues are not on our agenda," Yakis said. "We do not consider it 
appropriate for a state to develop such scenarios for another state."

The ministers will gather at a former Ottoman palace on the banks of the 
Bosporus.

But Iraqi opposition leaders said any solution short of Saddam's removal 
was unacceptable.

"If the regional countries are able to persuade him to disarm and comply 
with the U.N. resolution, that's fine. But it's also Saddam's oppression 
that we are concerned about," said Hamid el-Bayati, of the Supreme Council 
of Islamic Revolution in Iraq in a telephone interview from London.

He said Saddam's exile may be on the table even if the participating 
countries deny it.

"We know that some Arab countries raised the issue with Saddam himself," 
said el-Bayati. He said the subject was first raised by Qatar's foreign 
minister in a recent meeting with the Iraqi leader where Saudi officials 
were also present.

Sharif Ali, another Iraqi opposition leader based in London, said Saddam's 
possession of weapons of mass destruction was not the only point of 
contention with the Iraqi people, but also his oppressive rule.

He said the Iraqi opposition would reluctantly accept a solution whereby 
Saddam goes into exile without fear of prosecution -- "to avoid bloodshed."

A regional meeting, four days ahead of a deadline when U.N. inspectors 
report to the Security Council on Iraq's cooperation, reflects the deep 
reticence in the region to support a U.S.-led war.

fragile economic recovery. Polls show that more than 80 percent of the 
Turkish public opposes a war.

The United States is asking to base tens of thousands of soldiers in Turkey 
to open a northern front against Iraq. Turkish leaders have been hesitant 
to approve any deployment and have suggested that the United States scale 
back its request. The NATO military commander, U.S. Marine Corps Gen. James 
Jones, is expected in Turkey on Friday.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said Wednesday that he was 
skeptical that the Security Council would easily endorse a resolution for a 
military attack against Iraq, but said the Baghdad government "has to give 
in to international regulations."

Ministers at the Thursday meeting are expected to adopt a joint statement 
that would call on Iraq to fully cooperate with the inspectors.

The meeting is expected to be followed by another regional gathering in 
Damascus, Turkish diplomats said. No date has been set for that meeting.

CARACAS -- Chanting "Chavez won't go," hundreds of thousands of people 
marched through Caracas Thursday to denounce a 53-day-old strike aimed at 
forcing Venezuela's embattled president from office.

The massive demonstration was a response to almost daily marches by foes of 
President Hugo Chavez.

The demonstrators marched within a few hundred meters of Plaza Altamira, 
the eastern Caracas square that has become symbolic of the anti-Chavez 
movement since insurgent officers set up camp there late last year.

Despite initial tension, there were no immediate reports of incidents, as 
the Chavez supporters, known as "chavistas," marched along a four-lane 
highway near the square.

"Once again, the lies have been uncovered -- they were saying this march 
would end up in a huge attack on eastern Caracas," said Vice President Jose 
Vicente Rangel, one of the demonstrators.

"This protest shows what the majority wants," he said, as the crowd 
chanted, "Chavez won't go."

At the march, pro-Chavez lawmaker Nicolas Maduro denied violence was planned.

"With their Nazi-fascist ideology, they have a racist view of the people, a 
delinquent people," he said. "This is a dignified and decent people."

The demonstrators who set off from eastern Caracas were to meet up with 
another march in downtown Caracas, a chavista stronghold.

"We are marching for peace and social justice," said retired rear-admiral 
Hernan Gruber Odreman, who helped keep the demonstration orderly.

Many of the demonstrators waved palm-sized copies of the constitution and 
wore red berets emblematic of Chavez, a former paratrooper.

Numerous marchers carried carried pictures of the 48-year-old president, 
while one man dressed as legendary revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara took 
out his cigar to join the crowd in chanting pro-Chavez slogans.

One group held aloft a sign saying "don't drink Coca-Cola" and a giant 
cardboard replica of a bottle of the soft drink that has been unavailable 
as a result of the strike launched on December 2.

"Chavez! Chavez!" chanted demonstrators at a bus terminal in southwestern 
Caracas, one of two gathering points for marches that were to converge in a 
central avenue. They also gathered at a park in the east side, setting off 
earthshaking fireworks.

"The people are in the streets defending their democracy, defending the 
revolution," Infrastructure Minister Diosdado Cabello told reporters as he 
took part in the demonstration.

"We have to support our president ... he's the man the country needs," 
Chavez supporter Atilio Mata, a 50-year-old grocer, told Reuters. He wore a 
red beret, the symbol of former paratrooper Chavez's left-leaning movement.

The pro-Chavez demonstration came a day after the Supreme Court issued a 
preliminary decision to call off the referendum the opposition planned to 
hold on February 2 in a bid to force Chavez from office.

Chavez called the ruling "fair," adding that "it eliminates the terrible 
uncertainty that was affecting the country."

The marches also marked the downfall of Gen. Marcos Perez Jimenez, who was 
deposed on Jan. 23, 1958, after a decade of iron-fisted rule. Four decades 
of democratic governments followed -- but "chavistas" believe Chavez, who 
was elected in 1998 and re-elected in 2000, is the first president to stand 
up for the interests of Venezuela's poor majority.

"We have to defend our democracy, our constitution," said Jose Garcia, 65, 
a retired customs agent.

"Chavez is the only president that has really, really stood up for the poor."

Opposition leader refuses to mince words.

In an unprecedented act for an Australian opposition leader, Simon Crean 
yesterday stood before 350 troops heading for the Persian Gulf and told 
them bluntly: "I don't believe that you should be going."

No leader since Arthur Calwell during the Vietnam War has openly opposed a 
military deployment and none has ever said so to the departing troops. Mr 
Crean's speech was hailed by Labor strategists as brave and coherent, but 
condemned by the Government as inappropriate. But Mr Crean said many 
families had approached him after his speech at Sydney's Garden Island, 
"saying to me that they were exactly the words they wanted expressed".

"I don't support the deployment of our troops in these
circumstances. I do support our troops and always will, and that 
distinction is fundamentally important," Mr Crean told the troops on the 
HMAS Kanimbla.

"The men and women of our fighting forces in a democracy are expected 
unquestionably to follow to accept the orders of the government of the day.

"You don't have a choice and my argument is with the Government, not you."

Mr Crean then gave a detailed account of Labor's policy position on a 
conflict in Iraq, saying the United Nations weapons inspectors should be 
allowed to complete their work before the military is mobilised.

The crew on HMAS Kanimbla appeared unperturbed by the Labor leader's comments.

"He still said he supports us, that's what matters," said Leading Seaman 
Cathy Pascoe.

Able Seaman Matthew Discombe, facing his first deployment, said he 
respected Mr Crean's position. "I thought he was honest, I thought what he 
said was pretty much to the point ... but I believe we should be going, for 
sure. It's a problem that needs to be dealt with and I believe Australians 
should be in there doing our part."

But Able Seaman Brooke Vogler appeared more guarded.

"I've got my personal opinion, but it's not up to me," she said.

"I'm here to do my job."

According to a Labor source, there was some debate within the party 
hierachy over whether Mr Crean should turn up to the farewell and what he 
would say.

Labor Left figures - some of whom oppose a war against Iraq under any 
circumstances - are understood to have urged him not to attend.

While Labor may end up supporting the troop deployment if a military action 
is launched under the auspices of the United Nations, Mr Crean's speech 
highlighted the deep divisions in the community about the deployment.

Australia's official Vietnam War historian, the Australian Defence Force 
Academy's Professor Peter Edwards, said there were some comparisons to the 
Vietnam conflict.

Calwell opposed sending the 1st Battalion to Vietnam in 1965, telling 
Parliament that Australia would regret it. But, unlike Mr Crean, Calwell 
was very much going against the public mood. He fought the 1966 campaign on 
the issue and was thrashed by Harold Holt.

It was not until 1969 that public opinion swung against the Vietnam War, 
Professor Edwards said.

Dotcom prince aims to net another fortune as a cyber garbo

Life is rarely dull for the obscenely rich.

This week Sean Howard was a fireman, rushing from his multi-million-dollar 
Double Island hideaway in far North Queensland to help save his 
multi-million-dollar homestead next to Kosciuszko National Park.

In coming months, Mr Howard - Australia's most successful dotcom 
entrepreneur - plans to spend time as a garbage man.

The man who took a cast-off email business from Kerry Packer and turned it 
into Australia's second-biggest internet provider, OzEmail, now wants to 
rid the world of the torrent of unsolicited and often lurid email, known as 
spam.

He and fellow OzEmail investors Malcolm Turnbull and Trevor Kennedy have 
taken "a seven figure" chunk of the $520 million booty they shared from the 
sale of OzEmail to the ill-fated US giant WorldCom in 1998 and put it into 
a start-up business that will filter the junk out of family email boxes.

Although Mr Howard has been an investor - and frequent loser - in a dozen 
or more tech start-ups during the dotcom boom, Spamtrap.net - as the 
company and product will be known - is his first personal venture since 
OzEmail.

"There are a lot of exciting things being done on the internet. This isn't 
one of them," he said. "We're doing something no one else really wants to 
do - cleaning garbage."

But it is not just an act of goodwill. "We see it as a great business 
opportunity, and plan to aggressively market it throughout Europe and the US."

He is "quietly bullish" that it could be the next OzEmail. It will be 
launched first in Australia in mid-February.

Two years ago Mr Howard bought the up-market Double Island resort off Port 
Douglas for $4.5 million. Last year he sold his $13 million pad in Neutral 
Bay. But it seems life in the sun can be less than satisfying.

Asked what the motivation was for the risky tech venture, he said: "It 
combats the boredom. We all have to do something with our lives, and this 
is something that does some good."

Mr Howard was driven to the idea by his own irritation with junk mail. As 
the user of one of the oldest email addresses in Australia - his original 
OzEmail address - he is on a lot of spammer mailing lists. More than 30 per 
cent of his email is spam.

A recent Federal Government inquiry into the economic damage being wreaked 
by spam said that, on average, 20 per cent of the mail we receive is spam, 
and the problem is escalating. Worldwide spam was a $17 billion problem for 
internet users, it said.

Where existing anti-spam products fall down, Mr Howard said, was that users 
had to download them, pay upfront and regularly upgrade them. For about $3 
a month, Mr Howard's service will work by diverting email from a 
subscriber's internet provider through a "trap" sitting on a separate 
computer, so that only the "friendly" mail is sent on to the customer. It 
will take a single simple change to a user's email settings.

The hard part has been developing a system with the intelligence to sort 
the unwanted spam from the wanted mail.

I am Vicky (age 23), he is Greg (age 28), she is Jasmine (age 20), I am his

We work a lot. Greg working on his projects ,me working on the site. I 
feel so tired. I have to keep on my work. Nicollet is better now, after many 
injections she feels fine. Rispek is fine too, sometimes he cry a lot, I 
guess that's how he talks  LOL. I took him to the doctor. I ask Greg to 
come with me but he refuse. We fire our maid, she was nice but she did not 
clean well as before. Still no phone. Jasmine still have a problems with her 
baby weight,, the doctor says the baby is healthy and is ready to come out, 
and they want to take it out, but Jasmine and Greg have to decide.. and they 
don't know what to do yet, she goes for ultra sound and check ups every two 
days. Jasmine is not sure what to do.. Greg says he would prefer to wait, 
but the decision is for Jasmine to make... maybe Monday the baby will come 
out... more tests will have Friday to see if the baby is growing faster...

   Tim May sees the contest as between the State and independent people. This is not true. It is the ruling elites against the people as 
a collective interest and as masses of individuals as it seems to always have been. The State is a cat's paw of the ruling elites. 
Other instruments of the ruling elites are huge corporations, central banks and major religions. The ruling elites seem to mainly exist as

   As far as Tim May's boast of the the burn-off of minority groups, we should hope that some of the groups would make common
cause with us for the defeat of he ruling elites. Cypherpunks , individually, may judge  as to what groups may be too stupid or

NEW YORK -- After years of running a complex tangle of Unix operating 
systems in its global IT server operations, consumer products company The 
Unilever Group is committing its technological future to Linux.
The company, which sells food products including Ragu spaghetti sauce, 
Hellman's mayonnaise and Bertolli olive oil as well as personal hygiene 
brands such as Dove soaps and skin creams, plans to adopt Linux for its IT 
systems in all 80 countries where it operates. The company made the 
announcement here at the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo yesterday in the 
Jacob Javits Convention Center.
"We believe ... that it will deliver all of our computing needs in the 
eight- to 10-year time frame," said Colin Hope-Murray, chief technology 
officer at Unilever, which is based in London and Rotterdam, Netherlands. 
"We want to be able to cookie-cut our systems and deliver them around the 
world" without having to worry about operating system compatibility issues, 
he said. The company today runs systems with the HP-UX, AIX and Tru64 
versions of Unix.
Hope-Murray said Unilever will make the migration from Unix to Linux to 
simplify and standardize its IT architecture as well as to duplicate the 
lower operational costs and increased performance the company has already 
seen using Linux for Web servers, e-mail servers, proxy servers and 
firewall applications. So far, the company has no cost-savings numbers to 
release, but anecdotal evidence bolsters its expectations, he said.
"We've got an awful lot of proof points," he said, including firewall 
servers that run three times faster under Linux, with cost savings of up to 
40%. "Every time we put in Linux, we are amazed and surprised at its speed 
and the reliability with which we can run it."
Why make the move now? Because the cost savings and performance gains 
answered any concerns about whether the operating system could help 
business, Hope-Murray said. In addition, the expected release later this 
year of the Linux 2.6 kernel will introduce new features, including 
real-time threading and improved journaling, that offer the tools needed 
for the transition.
Unilever is making its move in a very vocal way, he said, to encourage 
independent software vendors to bring out needed enterprise business 
applications for Linux.
"It's not really a leap of faith," Hope-Murray said, noting that Unilever's 
two largest IT suppliers, Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM, are committed to 
Linux and are ready to help with the project. "If our partners weren't 
committed to it, we wouldn't be doing it."

Digital rights under fire

newsmakers Robin Gross thinks international copyright laws are out of step 
with the people. So much so that the former Electronic Frontier Foundation 
attorney is launching a new watchdog group called IP Justice.
Her goal is to "promote balance in global intellectual property law." Gross 
says she wants to make sure people won't become targets of legal action for 
doing things like making personal copies of CDs, DVDs and e-books they've 
purchased.

Gross, who's officially unveiling the project in the next couple of weeks, 
envisions uniting programmers and online activists across the globe to make 
sure consumers get a fair shake in the copyright debate. She talked with 
CNET News.com about how digital technology is changing copyright law, why 
technologists and consumers should be concerned, and why she thinks the 
United States is one of the most "restrictive regimes" in this area.

Q: Why did you found IP Justice?
A: I felt like there was a real need to connect the like-minded groups all 
over the world who are battling against the expansion of copyrights and are 
concerned about protecting freedom of expression.

How will IP Justice differ from other online activist groups?
We'll differ in that our focus will be on international IP law. I think our 
focus will also be a little bit different because we're going to be 
principle-based. One of the frustrations that so many people have expressed 
to me is that the laws are just being bought and paid for by Hollywood in 
the intellectual property space, and they're so out of step with the 
public's principles about what's fair and what's just.

I really don't think that lawmakers have been given a fair hearing about 
what the public's rights are and what the public's concerns are.
What will some of those principles be?
One is the idea that we should have the right to control our own individual 
experience of creative works. When we're in the privacy of our own homes, 
and we're using DVDs or CDs that we own on the computers that we own, that 
Hollywood doesn't have a right to tell us how we can use that media. It's 
our property and our rights as global citizens to receive and express and 
impart information without the interference of the copyright holders.

How about another one?
We have the right to make personal private copies of lawfully acquired 
works. So if I buy a CD, I should have an affirmative right to make a 
personal-use copy of that without breaking any laws by attempting to make a 
copy. Unfortunately, the United States has a very dismal track record right 
now for protection of freedom in this area. It's truly ironic that the 
United States has such an international reputation as being the leader in 
freedom of speech, but when it comes to intellectual property, it's 
actually one of the most restrictive regimes in terms of what people can do 
with their intellectual property.

Practically, how do you see this list of principles promoting this balance 
that you seek?
The idea is to get groups and individuals from all over the world to sign 
onto to these principles, to endorse these principles, and we can sort of 
hold the lawmakers in check in that we can say these are our principles and 
you can compare them to the laws and see that there's a difference. Laws 
are going to have to change in some cases, and that's really the ultimate 
goal of releasing these principles--to get the lawmakers to understand the 
will of the public when it comes to intellectual property issues.

And you don't think they do right now?
I really don't think that lawmakers have been given a fair hearing about 
what the public's rights are and what the public's concerns are. They've 
got a very close connection with the Hollywood lobbyists, and their 
position seems to very closely reflect the views of the Hollywood 
executives. So I think they need to be reminded of the public and what they 
expect of lawmakers when it comes to protecting their civil rights and 
their civil liberties.

What about intellectual property holders such as the movie studios, the 
record labels and the software makers--don't they have a right to exert 
more control over their digital works when it's so easy to duplicate and 
transmit them to vast amounts of people?
You've only pointed out one half of the way that digital technology changes 
the picture. Sure, it makes it easier for people to copy and share works, 
but digital technology also makes it easier for copyright holders to 
restrict what people can do with their works. So it's not fair to say that 
this technology is...very harmful to these industries because it's actually 
providing them with more power than they've ever had before to control what 
people can do with their works. That point is often overlooked--that 
they're controlling it to the point that they're taking away from the 
public side of the copyright bargain.

2 Books on Hewlett-Packard Chief

eople tend to have strong opinions about Carleton S. Fiorina, the chief 
executive of Hewlett-Packard. Some greatly admire her brilliance, drive and 
achievement, while others dismiss her as mainly a shrewd corporate 
politician and a self-promoter. The fact that she is the highest-ranking 
woman executive in America certainly adds to the attention she attracts.
She is the subject of two books now heading to bookstores, and both 
chronicle her rise and her role in one of the most costly and vituperative 
proxy fights in history — her campaign to buy Compaq Computer last year, a 
fight she won by the narrowest of margins. To say that the two books take 
different sides is something of an understatement.In "Perfect Enough: Carly 
Fiorina and the Reinvention of Hewlett-Packard" (Portfolio), she is a 
Thatcherite heroine, steady and unflinching under fire. The author, George 
Anders, a senior editor at Fast Company magazine, writes, "Day by day, 
Carly Fiorina was fighting her way through problems that would have 
destroyed most other chief executives."
In an interview, Mr. Anders called Ms. Fiorina "a tough and aggressive 
leader in times that demand that," and he said she had been "totally right" 
about the wisdom of the Compaq merger.
In "Backfire: Carly Fiorina's High-Stakes Battle for the Soul of 
Hewlett-Packard" (John Wiley & Sons), she is decidedly less heroic — 
brilliant and steely, but shallow. "She had an electric presence, and an 
ability to adapt to any audience," writes the author Peter Burrows, a 
department editor at Business Week magazine. "And it all sounded so right."
In an interview, Mr. Burrows called Ms. Fiorina "quite a marketer, and 
she's done a good job of marketing herself." Mr. Burrows said that in his 
book he had set out to present "a complete picture of her" and that her 
tenure as chief executive since 1999 had left Hewlett-Packard 
"strategically, operationally and in terms of corporate culture worse off 
than before."
Ms. Fiorina helped with the research for "Perfect Enough," taking time for 
six interviews with Mr. Anders. She refused to cooperate with Mr. Burrows, 
who had covered the company for Business Week and interviewed her several 
times before. Ms. Fiorina was displeased with a critical article he wrote 
during the proxy fight, Mr. Burrows said.
It appears that Mr. Anders's book will arrive in most bookstores a week or 
two ahead of the competition. "We're on schedule, but they moved their date 
up," said Airie Stuart, an executive editor at Wiley.

Premature ejaculation is one of the most common sexual problems. The 
condition is most often described as being an inability to delay

definition of when ejaculation is premature is subjective. While some men 
have trouble controlling their orgasm upon entry, others consider 5-10 
minutes of copulation too little time. How long a man is able to last is 
not the important factor in diagnosing premature ejaculation. The crucial 
issue is if a man is satisfied with the length of coitus.
How is premature ejaculation caused?
Most men have experienced this problem at some time in their life. 
Premature ejaculation was once thought to be caused by drugs or certain 
infections such as urethritis, but popular wisdom suggests it is more 
psychological in nature. The exact cause of the condition, however, still 
remains a mystery.
Premature ejaculation often occurs during the first experiences with sex, 
and in this case is most commonly attributed to anxiety. The majority of 
men gradually learn to control their orgasm, and have no lasting effect. 
Some men will develop a longer-term anxiety toward sex, which can cause a 
prolonged experience with premature ejaculation.
Sexual behavior is also a factor. The longer the period since last 
ejaculating, the quicker young men typically reach orgasm. Younger men tend 
to ejaculate more quickly than older men, as experience seems to be 
associated with ejaculatory control.

What can I do to delay ejaculation?
Masters and Johnson method
The best way to fighting premature ejaculation is learning how to identify 
and control the sensations leading up to orgasm. The Masters and Johnson 
method does just that. The Masters and Johnson method requires a great deal 
of patience and practice, but is very effective. Follow the steps below.
You may want to start with masturbation. Begin by bringing yourself to a 
point relatively close to climax, and stop, allowing yourself to relax 
before starting again. Each time you do this, bring yourself closer and 
closer to orgasm until you cannot control it any longer. You may want to 
practice with the aid of a lubricant. We recommend trying Astroglide. 
Repeating this procedure a number of times on different occasions will help 
you learn where your point of climax is. Once you have an idea about your 
"point of no return" you should be able to direct stimulation from your 
partner leading up to orgasm. The best way to practice this method is with 
a caring lover, although you can try to prepare by yourself. With your 
partner, engage in non-coital stimulation (like masturbation or oral sex) 
and gradually allow yourself to reach that point just before ejaculation. 
At that point, signal your partner to stop (often this is done with a light 
squeeze or sound) and allow yourself to partially lose your erection. 
Repeat these steps several times to get the hang of it. You should practice 
these steps for several days before you attempt intercourse. Once you are 
ready to try intercourse, lay on your back and direct your partner to 
slowly allow you to penetrate. As soon as you feel that you are about to 
climax, signal to your partner or give a gentle push upward. Relax for a 
bit, then begin again. You should soon be able to control your ejaculation 
and enjoy having sex.
Although the method is extremely effective, it could take weeks before you 
get it just right. Remember, be patient and try not to put too much 
pressure on the situation. If you don't get it the first time, shrug it off 
and remember that you are working towards something that takes time. If you 
still have trouble, don't hesitate to contact a sex therapist for guidance.
Squeeze technique
The squeeze technique is really just a variation of the Masters and Johnson 
method, except that the assisting partner squeezes the tip or base of the 
penis just before the point of climax to essentially cancel the orgasm. The 
"squeeze" forces blood out of the penis and reduces the erection. You may 
want to use the squeeze technique if the Masters and Johnson method alone 
is not working.
Other techniques
Desensitizing creams are products which purport to lessen the sensations 
felt by men during intercourse so that they can last longer. The limitation 
that many men feel these creams have is that they make intercourse less 
pleasurable by decreasing stimulation.

I have to think that Matt is being satirical here. This is hardly news, as
any locksmith can tell you.

(This is one of the reasons that some lock companies restrict the sale of
key blanks, and others (such as Medeco or ASSA) require keys be made by
the original supplier, using unique key blanks.)
