Call for inquiry into F18 Hornet crash.
Lawrence calls for US jet fighter crash inquest Federal MP Carmen Lawrence wants the US to give a full explanation of how one of its planes overshot a runway at Pearce air force base, north of Perth. The F18 Hornet, from the USS Abraham, had been taking part in training exercises with another fighter jet and the accident happened on their return to base. It is one of 20 of the jets currently stationed at Pearce, taking part in exercises at the Lancelin bombing range. The jet damaged its surface and fuselage during the crash. An investigation is being carried out by the US navy. Dr Lawrence says she wants the results of this investigation to be made fully available to the Australian public. "I think it's important we know exactly what's happened and whether it's likely to be repeated," she said. "I'm confident the Australian Defence Forces would want to know why this has occurred." http://abc.net.au/news/justin/nat/newsnat-18jan2003-50.htm On Friday night 17th January protesters at the Narangba Food Irradiation Plant where attacked by police. Police arrived at the protest camp late on Friday evening and without warning set police dogs on the protesters at the camp. One protester was punched in the face by a dog handler and had his nose broken. When placed in the back of the paddy wagon his ankles where smashed by police with batons and he and another male were then sprayed with capsicum spray. Two others where arrested and assaulted including one local and ironically charged with assault. Locals where pushed over and abused by police and one young local boy was punched in the jaw by an officer. An older woman was also pushed to the ground. Things at the camp it seems are hotting up with the call from State Development to vacate the site by 8am Monday morning. Undercover police were spotted hiding in bushes near the camp, one of them constantly circling the camp on a trail bike with its lights off. The police seem intent on arresting as many people as possible before Mondays eviction and are stooping to all levels to do this. People are needed at the camp immediately. So please come along and show your support. Pic. http://www.melbourne.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=40780&group=webcast
Re: Desert Spam(The war)
hi, Does n't that also mean that the US will have to time well the ending of the war or the fall of iraq(If iraq is to fall-that we will have to wait and see). Usually we have oil reserves which can last three months from the start of the war.How ever then the US will not be able to sell it-until the reserves of other countries dry out. That would mean that it cannot let iraq fall at an early stage of the war.No body will buy the oil from US then and US will not be able to cover up the cost of the war or may be even make profit of it. So if US tries blitzkrieg-iraq may fall in less than 100 days but they can't afford that to happen. They would have to wait till the other countries oil reserved dry out-sell the oil-make the money and then invade iraq. It also would mean that there can be no more countries around iraq drawn fully into the war for US. If Iran or Israel would attack iraq then the US oil equation will not work. There are also enough sects in and around iraq who will fight their way into iraq once they find iraq is going to fall at any point during the war.So US will want iraq be able to defend its territories till it can sell the oil.Once that is done-it can have its free run on iraq. It also might mean a long campaign the arieal route -missiles and bombs from planes. The ground troops will be only pressed only when iraq would be ready to be fell. US seems to run a very big gamble for very big money. Will have to see how well it works and what surprises iraq can come up with. Australians against non-UN attack on Iraq: poll A new survey of public opinion on Australia's involvement in a potential war with Iraq shows only 6 per cent would support a conflict without United Nations endorsement. The AC Nielsen poll published in metropolitan newspapers today said 30 per cent of Australians would not support a war with Iraq under any circumstances. According to the poll, 62 per cent of Australians believe the nation should only be involved as part of a UN-approved attack. http://abc.net.au/news/justin/weekly/newsnat-18jan2003-29.htm
Eight Mile.
Longish thread follows review... In Eminem''s debut film, 8 Mile, we get a glimpse of the profound contradictions underlying this white rapper's ascent to fame. The semi-autobiographical movie is set in Detroit's 8 Mile Road area, a predominantly Black ghetto at the city limit --the colour line of the city. 8 Mile chronicles Jimmy "Rabbit" Smith's struggle to record a demo and to eventually get a record deal while trying to survive the drudgery of work and life in a trailer park. The movie seems to show that rap is the language of the working class and impoverished, that it resonates across colour lines. However, it's apparent to me that 8 Mile cannot escape the fact that rap has everything to do with "race", so Rabbit's struggle to gain recognition as a rapper in an all-Black milieu is characterized by some very interesting anxieties around Blackness and whiteness. The movie opens with Rabbit "choking" on stage at a rap competition in a local club. The all-Black audience boos Rabbit, illuminated on screen in bright lights, as he strains to utter a word under the pressure of the glaring crowd veiled in shadows: Rabbit has ventured into the heart of darkness, if you will. Indeed, Rabbit's presence is met with constant hostility in this subculture. Despite the tension, Rabbit's all-Black "crew" of friends is a constant source of affirmation and comic relief: the only purpose of the Black characters is to provide a foil for Rabbit. Besides the role of sidekick, Black people are a source of fear and antagonism for Rabbit, not only within the hip hop scene but within the workplace as well. For instance, in the factory that Rabbit works at, he is under constant surveillance by his Black foreman. In one scene, Rabbit stands in line at the lunch truck while his Black co-workers rap about their hard working conditions. We can see that rap here is an organic expression of working class discontent. However, one Black worker's rap is homophobic and targets an openly gay co-worker. Rabbit--apparently the great white gay liberationist--intervenes and puts the (stereotypically) homophobic Black rapper in his place by lambasting him with witty raps in front of everyone else. 8 Mile blurs fact and fiction, so the audience can't help but see Rabbit as Eminem, so this scene is particularly corny considering Eminem's virulently homophobic lyrics in real life. An especially interesting aspect of the movie is Rabbit''s allegiance to and, at the same time, discomfort with whiteness. Besides Rabbit, in this movie, white people are clearly uncool. Rabbit seems to be embarrassed by the white, working class culture that he comes from as personified by his bingo-playing, hard-drinking mother with her Southern drawl. While hanging out with a friend in front of his trailer, Rabbit mockingly raps about living in a trailer park with his mom along to "Sweet Home Alabama", Lynyrd Skynyrd's homage to Southern pride*, while his mother's boyfriend blasts the music in the background. Rabbit, through his parody, tries to distance himself from the racist legacy of his heritage. In contrast, in other instances, Rabbit is deeply invested in upholding white supremacy. A subtext of the movie is Rabbit's need to protect white, female sexuality. For example, he savagely beats up a Black man whom he catches having sex with his white love interest, Alex. The movie also evokes the racist stereotype of the Black rapist who lusts after white flesh. We learn that a little girl was raped in one of the many abandoned buildings on 8 Mile by a Black man. Rabbit is finally convinced by his friends that they should burn down this building to prevent further such occurrences because it could have been his little sister Lily (named aptly for the white, virginal purity she represents). In the movie's climax, Rabbit is back on stage at a rap competition, but this time he lets loose his incredible talent. All his Black opponents make reference to his whiteness, racism, and intrusion. In his victory rap, Rabbit claims his whiteness. He refuses to deny his identity and the guilt that the other rappers try to provoke. However, Rabbit goes on to "out" his archenemy, Papa Doc, as a privileged rich kid who went to a private school, as if to say that because he is from a trailer park and a "broken family" that he has a more legitimate claim to rap than this bourgeois Black man. By the end of the movie, Rabbit forges his independence from the Black subculture he had penetrated into to go on to record his own demo without the help of the Black producers and promoters whom he had relied on thus far. As he walks off into the streets, we know he will fulfil his American Dream. His white privilege will enable him to outdo the Black community he learned his trade from. Like the real-life Eminem, Rabbit's intensity and sharp lyrics set him apart from white rappers like Vanilla Ice, whom he is disparagingly likened to by

Recently, people from around the country met in Phoenix, Arizona to discuss the creation of an organization around the "Bring the Ruckus" draft proposal that was distributed nearly two years ago (http://www.illegalvoices.org/ruckus). The meeting drew folks from places like Atlanta, Los Angeles, Portland, Washington, D.C., and Massachusetts. The purpose of the meeting was to lay the groundwork for a new revolutionary formation. Over the past year, Bring the Ruckus (BTR) has built its current membership through discussion and debate over the draft proposal as well as through a "Fight the Power, Build the Power" speaking tour in the spring of 2002, which included Washington D.C. and the West Coast. Through developing interest via face-to-face interactions, we have managed to slowly build a presence in the cities represented at the meeting. The meeting took place on November 9-10, 2002. The first day was committed to political discussion and the second day to building the organization. The meeting was made up of mostly men, though people of color and women were represented. There were several people from Phoenix, but representatives or entire collectives were present from various cities as well. The political discussion encompassed everything from our individual politics and political work to our analysis of the world. Topics of discussion included the function of whiteness/race in American society today and its relation to class, settlerism/colonialism compared to the race traitor analysis, feminism/women's liberation, and intersectionality/avoiding laundry list approaches to oppression. We also discussed the significance of the creation of several new federation-type organizations around the country as well as the anti-globalization and anti-war movements. The second day's discussions addressed the formation of an organization. It began with the participants confirming their political unity based on the previous day's discussions and figuring out where that discussion would lead us in regards to building the organization. Based on the first day's discussion, we established six criteria for political work within this new organization-in-formation. These criteria are: · It must address systems that attack working class people of color By strategically focusing not only on the working class but also on people of color within this class, we ensure that our work is focused on those most impacted. · It must be consistent with a feminist praxis Our politics must include a gender analysis and our practice must consistently challenge systems of patriarchy both in society and within the organization. · It must attack white supremacy Undermining the system of white privilege challenges one of the greatest barriers to revolutionary consciousness among the working class. · It must have the potential to build a dual power Our work must challenge state power or prefigure a challenge to state power, it must pose a revolutionary or potentially revolutionary challenge to that power, and it must prefigure a new society in some small way · It must have the potential to further the development of revolutionary consciousness among the working class We will measure success by the impact on consciousnesses on the people we work with. We will work for the greatest amount of awareness of capitalism's contradictions among the greatest number of people. · It should stretch the boundaries of political organizing Rather than rely exclusively on the strategies and tactics of the past, we will encourage creative methods of resistance. When discussing our political work, we found that a clear majority of us were doing work around police, prison and immigration issues. Further, we also agreed that these issues most closely fit the six criteria. We therefore agreed to focus on anti-police and anti-prison work, with the understanding that a) locals are free to develop their own strategies and ways of doing this work according to local conditions, as long as it's consistent with the six criteria; b) other kinds of work that fall outside of these two areas but meet the six criteria are also welcome; and c) these areas and the specific work we're doing within them are all subject to critique at the upcoming national meeting. Once common criteria and work was hashed out, a basic structure for the group was agreed upon. It includes a coordinating committee, locals, and various work groups responsible for organizing the next meeting, putting together another tour, and editing the discussion bulletin. Once the committees were formed, the role of each was defined and their accountability to the larger group established. We then filled the committees with volunteers, except for the coordinating committee, which was nominated and chosen by the entire group. There was some concern as to what the committee should look like in terms of gender and race. We agreed t

Brissie anarchs action prior to vicious repression.
Brisbane Anarchist occupy a Nuclear facility posted by asger on Sunday January 05 2003 @ 10:49PM PST At 8am (Monday 6/1/03) protestors performing a media stunt (involving a dragon attacking actors dressed as nuclear technicians and security guards) outside the fences of the facility were let in by a lone security guard. As the 'Dragon' crossed the road, the single security guard unlocked the main gate. Protestors assumed some agreement had been negotiated, and 20 people (including the corporate media) entered the grounds of Steritech's nuclear food irradiation site. Protestors continued their theatre performance, and then occupied the nuclear material containment pool room. At no time did the 'official' security make an attempt in either word or deed to stop them. After half an hour the security guards locked the gates and refused to let out the remaining 15 people, until police arrived at about 9am. During that time some protesters got out by creating holes in the fence, or climbing over the fence. Police eventually allowed protestors the option of leaving, despite protestations of security guards who "wanted everyone to be arrested". Six people climbed the walls of the containment area, hoisting flags and banners, and refused to leave. They made a statement to the effect that they were "community health and safety inspectors" and found the site to be "unsafe" and "insecure" and would occupy the site and reopen it as a Community centre for the Deception Bay youth (many of whom dirt-bike in the area). They observed that the formwork in the containment area walls was already cracked to the ground. The containment pool's integrity is paramount to the prevention of radiation leakages into the environment. The pool is ten metres deep and may often fall within the water table, as the construction is sited on the edge of a paperbark wetland which feeds directly into Moreton Bay. A stand off with police ensued until the Tactical Response Unit (qld's riot police) were called in about midday to remove protestors from the premises. (No further details of this are avaiable yet, check www.brisbane.indymedia.org.au for updates.) The successful action of activists calls into serious question the claims by the Steritech Corporation that the facility will be 'safe' and 'secure'. ALF press release.
North American Animal Liberation Front Press Office ALF Spokesperson Steps Down, Encourages Others To Step Forward The following is the final communication from (former) ALF spokesperson David Barbarash: Effective immediately, I am resigning my position as North American spokesperson for the Animal Liberation Front and ending my tenure with the ALF Press Office. I have held this voluntary position since the summer of 1999, and after three and a half years I've come to some conclusions and perspective about the work and role of a public spokesperson. I have enjoyed the work immensely, and it has been very rewarding to me personally, but I do believe that, overall, my position is not necessary for the furtherance of animal liberation. In fact, in some cases, I believe that it is detrimental to the overall movement forward. Too many times I have not been able to convey the message that needs to be heard - the suffering of animals, our collective responsibility to end this suffering and the animal carnage which continues seemingly unabated. Too often I have not been given the space in the media to explain why it is that the ALF take the action that it does, and the underlying reasons why people would want to risk their freedom to save animal lives. Too often the story has been about me, about the "person behind the Press Office," the only public face of the underground movement. Granted, I can understand the interest in such a story, but this is not what the Press Office or my role was established for. I now believe that there is no real need for an "official" public face to represent the Animal Liberation Front. The ALF will continue to take direct action long as long as there remains animal suffering, torture, and murder, regardless if a public spokesperson exists. A public spokesperson does not encourage more ALF action; continued animal abuse is the driving motivation. I also believe that the existance of an ALF Press Office and a media spokesperson give reason for other groups and individuals to NOT speak up in support of the underground movement. My role has allowed others to step aside and not take a positive public stand on illegal non-violent direct action. To those in the animal rights/liberation movement who are surprised by my resignation or upset about the lack of a public voice for the ALF, I say this: Now is your opportunity to step forward! Now is the time for your local animal rights group to put out a press release in support of the ALF when they next strike in your area. Now is the time for you and your friends to organize and garner public support for the ALF when next they raid that fur farm in your town or state, or destroy those meat trucks at the local slaughterhouse, or paint slogans on the neighbourhood fast food outlet. Now is *your* time, Animal Rights Person/Animal Rights Group! Let's face it: A few dozen public spokespeople across the continent, all speaking up in support of the ALF is a much better situation than that one public face you see and hear about all the time. The story isn't about me, it's about the animals, and the brave people who risk everything to save them. My resignation is a step toward re-focussing the media away from a persona, and toward the real issues of animal exploitation, by removing the one story they love to persue: the media guy. And it is an opportunity for the animal rights movement to step up the fight and play a more critical role in this struggle. Although I am resigning my position as public spokesperson, the ALF Press Office will still exist and will be run by several anonymous people. The Press Office will still be a recipient of anonymous communiques from the ALF underground, and the Press Office volunteers will continue to send out those communications to the media. The primary delivery service that the ALF Press Office will now be utiliziing is the Animal Liberation Frontline Information Service email list. I strongly encourage reporters, editors, and all media to subscribe to this service, which is also the primary method of press release delivery by the Earth Liberation Front Press Office. To subscribe simply go to http://www.waste.org/mail/?list=frontline-news and subscribe your email address. Effective immediately, the ALF Press Office can now be contacted at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Emails sent to our old address will be forwarded on for a short time until the account is permanently closed. There is now no telephone contact for the ALF Press Office. All phone lines have been disconnected. The mailing address post office box will remain open for now, until other arrangements are made. On a final note, donations to the ALF Press Office are still gratefully accepted by the people who will now take on the responsibility. As well, donations to help cover the cost of legal expenses incurred in my fight to retrieve the property seized by the recently-determined illegal RCMP search this past

Report from occupied Palestine.
The Tel Aviv suicide bombing and illegal foreign workers By Jaggi Singh Dispatch from East Jerusalem, for No One Is Illegal - January 6, 2002 [The following dispatch was prepared for members of the No One Is Illegal campaign in Montreal. The No One Is Illegal campaign confronts and challenges the Canadian state and its racist policies against immigrants, refugees and indigenous peoples, and works in solidarity with similar efforts worldwide. For more information e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] For previous reports from Palestine, e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] ] [East Jerusalem, January 6, 2002] -- The double suicide bombing at the Central bus station in Tel Aviv yesterday evening is dominating headlines internationally. The attack resulted in at least 23 deaths, and over 100 injured, many very seriously. Israel's predictable response is to tighten the military occupation over Palestinians, meaning more restrictions on movement, more curfews, more checkpoints, more humiliating searches, more military incursions, and the closing of at least three universities, including Al-Najah University in Nablus. Targeted assassinations, home occupations and house demolitions are sure to follow within the next hours and days, as will Palestinian civilian deaths. Just in the limited period between December 26, 2002-January 1, 2003, 15 Palestinian civilians were killed by Israeli Occupation Forces, including 5 children (according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights). And just as surely as Israel will increase its attacks in the occupied territories, more suicide attacks against civilians in Israel will follow, as the logic of collective punishment that Israel applies to Palestinian civilians is returned in kind by the members of various militant groups, both secular and Islamic, who all rushed to take credit for the latest terror attack. At least six of the people killed in Tel Aviv, and a large proportion of the injured, were foreign workers, many of whom live and work in Israel illegally. The bombings occurred in a district of south Tel Aviv with a large concentration of foreigners (there are 80,000 foreign workers in Tel Aviv alone). Migrant labor in Israel comes mainly from Africa, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Southeast Asia (predominantly Thailand and the Philippines), China, Latin America as well as Palestine. Many of the foreign worker victims and their relatives have been reluctant to seek medical help, or to inquire about their friends and relatives. According to the Jerusalem Post, a hospital spokesman at the Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv said that "many of the wounded were refusing to identify themselves for fear of deportation, and that some had been left at the hospital's doorstep by friends who hastily quit the area." In response, Israel's Interior Minister publicly announced that no deportation proceedings would be launched against foreigners who were wounded. Israeli TV news broadcasts, normally in Hebrew, included police appeals in English to foreign workers to seek medical help without fear of deportation. And the PR-savvy Israeli Foreign Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, will be visiting the foreign worker victims in hospital. The immediate Israeli government response to the situation of foreign workers as suicide attack victims belies the day-to-day treatment of foreign workers here, when they're not sympathetic "Palestinian terror" victims like other Israelis, but just cheap labor. For the last year, foreign workers have been a convenient scapegoat for an Ariel Sharon government that needs lots of scapegoats. The year 2002 was Israel's worst economic performance -- with negative growth -- since the formation of the state in 1948. High unemployment has been blamed, in racist fashion, on the influx of foreign labor. Adam Baruch, writing in the Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv this past November, described the campaign against foreigners as an atrocity. In his words: "The propaganda of the immigration police against the foreign workers is developing into a cultural, humane and political atrocity. The television broadcast against foreigners is becoming more and more violent. The foreign workers are presented as "people enemies". Their humanity is transparent, non-existent. The fact that the Israelis "imported them" and is taking advantage of them is being denied. The propaganda incite the unemployed to act against the foreign worker. The propaganda presents those who employ foreign workers as "traitors". If you insert the word "Jew" instead of "foreign worker" in this propaganda - you will get anti-Semitism." In a speech on unemployment last January, the Israeli Minister of Social and Labour Affairs, Shlomo Benizri, said: "The main problem we are dealing with right now is reducing our dependence on foreign workers ... It is shameful that Israel is number two on the list of [Western] countries with the highest proportions of foreign workers." [Foreign workers account for
Anarcho-feminism.
The following is the text of an anarcha-feminist manifesto from around 1971, reprinted in a pamphlet called Quiet Rumours: Blood Of The Flower: An Anarchist-Feminist Statement We are an independent collective of women who feel that anarchism is the logically consistent expression of feminism. We believe that each woman is the only legitimate articulator of her own oppression. Any woman, regardless of previous political involvement knows only too intimately her own oppression, and hence, can and must define what form her liberation will take. Why are many women sick and tired of 'movements'? Our answer is that the fault lies with the nature of movements, not with the individual women. Political movements, as we have known them, have separated our political activities from our personal dreams of liberation, until either we are made to abandon our dreams as impossible or we are forced to drop out of the movement because we hold steadfastly to our dreams. As true anarchists and as true feminists, we say dare to dream the impossible, and never settle for less than total translation of the impossible into reality. There have been two principle forms of action in the women's liberation movement. One has been the small, local, volitionally organised consciousness-raising group, which at best has been a very meaningful mode of dealing with oppression from a personal level and, at worst, never evolved beyond the level of a therapy group. The other principle mode of participation has been large, bureaucratised groups which have focused their activities along specific policy lines, taking great pains to translate women's oppression into concrete, single-issue programmes. Women in this type of group often have been involved in formal leftist politics for some time, but could not stomach the sexism within other leftist groups. However, after reacting against the above-mentioned attitude of leftist males, many women with formal political orientations could not accept the validity of what they felt were the 'therapy groups' of their suburban sisters; yet they themselves still remained within the realm of male-originated Marxist-Leninist, Trotskyist, Maoist rhetoric, and continued to use forms of political organisation employed by the male leftist groups they were reacting against. The elitism and centralisation of the old male left thereby has found, and already poisoned parts of the women's movement with the attitude that political sophistication must mean 'building' a movement around single issue programmes, thereby implying that 'we must be patient until the masses' consciousness is raised to our level.' How condescending to assume that an oppressed person must be told that she is oppressed! How condescending to assume that her consciousness will grow only by plodding along, from single-issue to next single issue. In the past decade or more, women of the left were consistently intimidated out of fighting for our own liberation, avoiding the obvious fact that all women are an oppressed group. We are so numerous and dispersed that we have identified ourselves erroneously as members of particular classes on the basis of the class of 'our men', our fathers or our husbands. So women of the left regarding ourselves as middle-class more than oppressed women, have been led to neglect engaging in our own struggle as our primary struggle. Instead, we have dedicated ourselves to fight on behalf of other oppressed peoples, thus alienating ourselves from our own plight. Many say that this attitude no longer exists in the women's movement, that it originated only from the guilt trip of the white middle class male, but even today women in autonomous women's movements speak of the need to organise working class women, without concentrating on the need to organise ourselves - as if we were already beyond that level. This does not mean (if we insist first and foremost on freeing ourselves) that we love our oppressed sisters any the less; on the contrary, we feel that the best way for us to be true to all liberation struggles is to accept and deal directly with our own oppression. Why Anarchism? We do not believe that rejection of Marxist-Leninist analysis and strategy is by definition political naiveté. We do not believe it is politically naive to maintain the attitude that even a 'democratically centralised' group could be considered the 'vanguard' spokeswoman for us. The nature of groups concerned with 'building' movements is: 1) to water down the 'more extreme' dreams into 'realistic' demands, and 2) to eventually become an organ of tyranny itself. No thanks! There is another entire radical tradition which has run counter to Marxist-Leninist theory and practice through all of modern radical history - from Bakunin to Kropotkin to Sophie Perovskaya to Emma Goldman to Errico Malatesta to Murray Bookchin - and that is Anarchism. It is a tradition less familiar to most radicals

Memoirs of an Urban Guerrilla.
Direct Action: Memoirs of an Urban Guerrilla Reviewed by Jonathan Slyk Direct Action: Memoirs of an Urban Guerrilla by Ann Hansen (Between the Lines, 720 Bathurst St, Suite 404, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 2R4, Canada, www.btlbooks.com; and AK Press, 674-A 23rd St, Oakland, CA 94612-1163, & POB 12766, Edinburgh, EH8 9YE, Scotland, www.akpress.org; 2001) 493 pp. $19.95 paper. From the opening pages describing the spectacular arrest on a winding mountain highway to the finely-grained portraits of daily existence within the claustrophobic world of underground sabotage, this sprawling adventure reads at times so much like a plot lifted from an espionage thriller that its hard to imagine such remarkable events occurring in a young, white, idealistic womans life. But for the author, living the dream as an urban guerrilla was anything but glamorous, even though there were occasional thrills and moments of triumph. In the early 1980s, Ann Hansen was part of a west coast anarchist group that would go on to engage in the most notorious anti-authoritarian armed resistance in Canadian history. Calling itself Direct Action, the five-member cell began a D.I.Y. lifestyle that included shoplifting, dumpster diving and auto theft before stepping up to what culminated in the bombings of both a B.C. Hydro substation on Vancouver Island and a cruise missile guidance system manufacturing plant in Toronto. This was back in the days when direct action meant something more than giant street puppets or going limp at demos. A time when punk, peace, anti-nuclear and environmental protests all converged in a way not dissimilar to todays anti-globalization movement. The exploits of Hansen, Brent Taylor, Doug Stewart, Gerry Hannah and Julie Belmas, later dubbed "The Squamish Five" by the media (after the nearby logging town where they were eventually arrested), reached national cult status by the time of their capture and subsequent trial, but within a few short years had receded into relative obscurity. All received lengthy prison sentences. Hansen, the eldest, got life and did seven years of hard time before being paroled. Expecting a tough-talking, streetwise ex-con, I was somewhat surprised to hear a warm voice sounding like a childrens librarian on the other end of the phone. "What do you think of the cover?" she asked me nervously. "Do you think its, you know, too similar to those planes and buildings in New York?" As fate would have it, the first copies of Direct Action landed on the Toronto publishers desk the morning of September 11. Not surprisingly, the books release was delayed for a month. Also previously receiving the manuscript were three of the other four former memberswho gave their approval. Hysteria over terrorism and the current fear surrounding dissent have kept publicity and speaking engagements low profile. Several weeks after our initial conversation, at an all-day grill in downtown Vancouver, Ann Hansen and I are wolfing down breakfast and talking about politics, running a small business and the book that finally spells out what really happened all those years ago. Hansen, who by law cannot receive money from the book, says the writing experience was cathartic. "When I got out of prison, my whole political identity was disintegrated. It took me ten years just to recover emotionally. It was only after my cabinetmaking business ended, when I was mentally more free, that I started to think about that period in my life again." The memoir, she says, was intended as both an historical document and a cautionary tale for would-be guerrillas. Yet it can also serve as a basis for discussion around tactics (which are explicitly detailed), since it highlights the uneasy relationship between pacifists and more militant activists and discloses some of the righteous condemnation that often divides the wider milieu in general. The sense of time and place in British Columbia are accurately conveyed, as is most of the political dialogue, reflecting a local anarchist scene that was strongly influenced by eco-feminism. Direct Actions critique of civilization was at least as sophisticated as any other of the time, which, considering it was largely an intuitive grasp of Leviathan by individuals in their early twenties, and Perlmans classic work Against His-Story had yet to come out, is a tribute to their nascent understanding. Access to thousands of pages of police wiretap and bug surveillance transcripts allowed Hansen to literally recreate verbatim much of the psycho-dynamics among the group members, producing a slice of reality that is dramatic without being maudlin. And the narrative device of interspersing the cops perspectives, whose characters are fictionalized, helps to heighten the sense of jeopardy. My only problem with the book is it seems overly drawn-out with the entire last quarter devoted to preparation for a Brinks robbery, and no less than three p

Anarchist groups have been formed in South Africa, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Zambia, and elsewhere.
South Africa's pioneer anarchist was Henry Glasse, an English immigrant anarchist who had translated several of Kropotkin's works into English. But it was in the 1910s that Anarcho-Syndicalism came to be a force worth reckoning with. A group emerged around the weekly, the Voice of Labour, South Africa's first socialist newspaper, which went on to found the Industrial Workers of the World in Johannesburg in 1910. A second IWW-linked group, the Socialist Labour Party, aligned with the "political" IWW in the United States, was also formed at this time. Later IWW-aligned organisations such as the International Socialist League, founded in Johannesburg in 1915, and the Industrial Socialist League, founded in Cape Town in 1918, played a pioneering role in early black trade unionism. Repression, the formation of the Communist Party of South Africa in 1921, and purges in the Party in the late 1920s ended the early anarchist movement in South Africa. It is only within the last few years that revolutionary class struggle Anarchism and Anarcho-Syndicalism have re-emerged in Africa. Anarchist groups have been formed in South Africa, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Zambia, and elsewhere, to fight for a free and equal, classless society. Unfortunately, because of the repression of anarchism, none of these pamphlets are written in the indigenous languages of Africa and, as yet, none have been translated. Huntingdon's.
Another victory against HLS! -- Urgent action needed to maintain pressure! From the open publishing newswire: An amazing turn of events have unfolded over the last 24 hours. On Monday morning HLS press released that vivisection guru Kirby Lee Cramer and university professor John Caldwell resigned themselves from Huntingdon's board of directors. This public abandonment leaves Huntingdon with a huge gaping wound, as these two individuals were all that gave the board its scientific and business credibility. These are the two main directors animal rights activists have been targeting in the UK and the US. Kirby Lee Cramer has had his home address and phone number widely published, and the other companies he sits on the boards of have been under attack (weakening his position there.) This summer, as SHAC announced this new area of activism, an ultimatum was given to Kirby to choose between being welcome at all the other companies he sits on the boards of, or just stick with Huntingdon. Mr. Cramer choose wisely. The loss of these two individuals is the clearest indication yet that even those within Huntingdon admit it is a dying enterprise. They have chosen not to go down with the ship. As if this wasn't bad enough - HLS'S NEW DIRECTOR IS A SHAM! Mr. Muhammed Faruque is a 73 year-old business man from Karachi, Pakistan. He runs a family company that makes cement, sugar, and paper products. He has nothing to do with the pharmaceutical industry, and is reported to be making no financial investment in the lab. It also has been reported that he has a great deal of trepidation about joining the board concerning the animal rights threat he may face. Sounds like he needs some convincing! Social roots.
Solidarity and Responsibility: Fighting to win against capitalism and oppression. By Gary Kinsman Many activists involved in fighting racism, sexism, heterosexism, and other forms of oppression have been told by other leftists (often but not always white, heterosexual men) that these are not as important as the "central" class struggles they support. They may even view our struggles as diversionary or divisive. I remember being told this many times in the 1970s and 1980s as a gay liberation and socialist activist. By "class struggle" they seem to mean only the unions and the point of production -- offices and factories. While this is a very important front of struggle, it is only one arena of working class life and even here race, gender and sexuality are central aspects of the organization of workplaces and of exploitation. For some who argue this narrow view of class it is as if there is a working class that does not have a home, community and sexual life as if working class experience does not centrally include the relations of domestic labour, the reproduction of our capacities to labour, poverty, unemployment, immigration, race and racism, sexuality and pleasure. As many have pointed out, you cannot possibly think and act politically about class relations in Canada without seeing their racialized and gendered character. The narrow notion of "class politics" still common in some parts of the left is not an adequate "class politics" at all. This view abstracts the working class away from the racism and the gender and sexual oppressions that are actually key to defining what class relations and struggles are all about. This empty abstraction is then used to construct a "false universal" image of the working class as white and mostly male and heterosexual. This false image of the working class can foster divisions in working class struggles when racism, sexism and heterosexism are not centrally addressed. The experience of class is never an abstraction it is a social relation between people. It is always lived in relation to gender, race, sexuality, age, ability, language, nation and other relations. Successful struggles to undo these forms of oppression and exploitation must recognize their intertwined character. This is why an anti-racist, feminist, class politics that addresses all forms of oppression is needed in today's organizing. I examine these questions in the context of the Fighting to Win perspective developed by the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) which is about moving beyond token or symbolic forms of protest to developing our own forms of power and wining victories through our own struggles. Autonomy and Interdependence When it comes to oppression and capitalism we need to recognize the specificity of each form of oppression which creates the basis for autonomous struggles against racism, sexism, heterosexism and other forms of oppression. Oppressed people need to build their own power against the forms of oppression they face. At the same time autonomy on its own is not enough. This is because all of these forms of oppression are constructed in and through each other and in and through the relations of capitalism. This is why we need to bring our various struggles together to build a broader counter-power to that of the capitalists and their state relations. Capitalism in a concrete historical sense is racist and sexist. Fighting racism can be fighting capitalism and fighting sexism can be fighting capitalism. The fight against capitalism is thereby enriched by seeing how central fighting gender and racial oppression, for instance, is to developing a radical anti-capitalist politics. So we need to recognize the need both for autonomous and united struggles and for building a solidarity that learns from and builds upon the autonomy of the various struggles of the oppressed and exploited. Solidarity yes, but solidarity on whose terms? In recent years, given the growth of our movements against oppression, some of the arguments against taking up the struggles of the oppressed are made in a more subtle fashion. One variant is that in the name of solidarity against a common enemy whether it be the Harris government in Ontario or the struggle against the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) we should not raise our specific concerns and demands around racism, sexism, sexuality and other struggles. We should instead, it is argued, unite against our common enemy with the hope that after this enemy is defeated that somehow our needs will get addressed. This boils down to an unacceptable argument for the postponement of our struggles against oppression, as well as not seeing how central oppressed people's needs are to battles against the Harris government and capitalist globalization. This raises important questions about solidarity in our struggles. Solidarity is central to Fighting to Win as OCAP has stressed. But we alw

Woman killed by car while picketing at GE 'She felt very strongly about the union' - By Megan Woolhouse [EMAIL PROTECTED] The Courier-Journal Kjeston Michelle Rodgers put on her long black leather coat and said goodbye to her three daughters just before midnight Monday, before heading out to join fellow General Electric workers on the first day of a twoday strike. Amanda Rodgers, 19, said her mother, who was known as Michelle, was excited to go, despite the freezing cold and dark early morning hours. ''She felt very strongly about the union.'' But shortly before 5 a.m. yesterday, Michelle Rodgers, carrying her picket sign near an entrance to GE's Appliance Park, was struck and killed by a Hollow Creek police officer driving south on Fegenbush Lane. She died at the scene, according to Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Jo-Ann Farmer. The police officer, Roy Truax, who was on duty, was not injured. LA Jan 11.
THE protest for the anti war ceremonies was outstanding. Solidarity was the key. From my best judgement there was about 15-20 thousand people out in the streets with signs, drums, and respect for all. The LA anarchists came out, but i was disappointed by the number. I think there were 150-200 freedom fighters in black. Everyone was on their best behavior and there was no damage or arrests. I would set the number of police involved was around 3-400 coppers. That means if the oinks make 25 bucks an hour---then it was a waste of (min figure) $10,000 per hour. WHAT A WASTE!!! This crowd was very enthusiastic and was much more of a "mix" than typical protests. ALSO, Saul Williams recited spoken word, and the Ron Kovic led the march. There was also a band playing that included "slash" from Gn'R. THE PEOPLE ARE MOBILIZING. REMEMBER: THE BIG ONE IN SAN FRAN. IS SET FOR JAN 18...so get involved. Indonesia.
After a wave of militant protests and direct action from students and unions in Indonesia, the government there has said that it will reconsider its plans to pay off IMF/WB debts by raising the prices of fuel oil, electricity, and telephone service. The effects of these price hikes were mostly shouldered by the poor. The fuel oil hikes have been devastating to Indonesia's rural communities, who depend on kerosene for cooking, as well as fuel for farm machinery. The cost to Indonesian's urban population has been just as great, with the newly impoverished forced to depend on government handouts of rice to eat. Those handouts are handled by the Bureau of Logistics (Bulog), widely seen as corrupt in the wake of scandals in the wake of failed disaster relief efforts. The protests in Indonesia have been an embarassment to the regime of President Megawati, whose Nationalist party was elected after a similar wave of protests forced out her three predecessors, former dictator Suharto, his immediate successor B.J. Habibe, and moderate Muslim cleric Abdurrahman Wahid. Protests in cities on the island of Sulawesi, including the commandeering of fuel trucks in Makassar and the stoning of the Nationalist headquarters in Palu, forced Megawati to cancel visits there. Additionally, student protests outside the presidential palace were stopped just short of siege. The protests started just after the announcement of the price hikes, and are taking place as IMF technocrats visit the country to rate Indonesia's "progress" with structural reforms. The protests have caused a split in the president's party, and as a result the government announced on 15 January that it would delay hiking telephone costs, and would also reconsider the fuel oil and electricity hikes. The government hopes that this will cool off students and labor militants, who have demanded the resignation of the president and vice president. Establishment politicians have been raising concerns over this talk, especially ahead of Indonesian elections in 2004. Those elections will be the first under Indonesia's new Constitution, which was revised to eliminate set-aside seats for the military (a base of support for Suharto's Golkar Party) as well as the direct election of the president. http://www.infoshop.org/inews/stories.php?story=03/01/16/8594057 More story and pics.
INS yellow stars campaign.
[ The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: 01/16/03] INS expands reach of registration rules Deadline Feb. 7 for men of largely Muslim nations By MARK BIXLER The Atlanta Journal-Constitution The U.S. Department of Justice is expanding a controversial initiative that requires men from several largely Muslim nations to be fingerprinted, photographed and interviewed by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Students, tourists and businessmen from Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan and Kuwait will join visa holders from 20 other countries required to register, according to documents to be published today in the Federal Register. The government also is giving a second chance to foreign nationals, mainly from the Middle East, who missed recent deadlines to register. The Justice Department required male students, tourists and businessmen from five Muslim countries to register by Dec. 16. It set a Jan. 10 deadline for men from 13 other mostly Muslim nations, but advocates said the government did little to publicize the requirement. "At least 60 percent of the people didn't know," said Akeel Hanano, president of the Georgia chapter of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. The documents say those who missed the deadlines can register without penalty at INS offices nationwide from Jan. 27 to Feb. 7. Visa holders must register if they arrived on or before Sept. 30 from Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates or Yemen. The documents refer to "an act of grace" for people who "remained unaware of the requirements." In Georgia, Hanano tried to spread the word by posting fliers at mosques. Foreign-student advisers such as Doug Podoll of Georgia State University sent e-mails and letters. The government says its Special Registration initiative will ensure compliance with visas and "identify wanted criminals and known terrorists," but Juliette Kayyem, a Harvard University terrorism expert, said it "satisfies no national security interest." At least 500 foreign nationals in California and a handful in Georgia and other states were detained while registering, mainly for immigration violations. They may be deported. Meanwhile, a Feb. 21 deadline looms for visa holders from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. http://www.accessatlanta.com/ajc/news/0103/16register.html < Protesters Force Indonesian Gov't to Rethink IMF Austerity Measures | War is not the Answer (Corp. news on Pittsburgh convergence) > Reverend Chuck0 writes on Thursday January 16 2003 @ 07:29AM PST: [ reply | parent ] An anarchist journalist with the DC Independent Media Center talked to local INS officials on Tuesday and found out that the plan is to screen all male foreign nationals (including those from Europe, Asia, South America, etc.) within the next two to three years. Pittsburgh Convergence.
War is not the Answer The upcoming Regional Antiwar Convergence may be the biggest protest Pittsburgh has seen in 30 years. In a round-table conversation, some local activists talk about dissent and street-level action -- INTERVIEW BY GEOFF KELLY (Pulp) "All that one can say is that if we act as if peace were necessary and possible, we are more likely to achieve it than if we don't." -- Sir Michael Howard In his book The Invention of Peace, the British military historian Sir Michael Howard suggests that peace is much more complicated and high-maintenance than war -- which may be why it breaks down all the time. "Peace is not a natural state of society," he writes, "any more than war is a natural state of society. Conflict is what is endemic and, if you like, is natural. There is only going to be peace if those conflicts can be managed and subsumed. That is what peacemaking is really all about." Precisely how to manage and subsume conflict is a sticky problem, difficult in one's daily life, let alone on a global scale. The important thing, according to Howard, is simply to try. The antiwar movement in this country is a chimera because it is presented in the media incompletely, in fits and starts, viewed from a distance with misunderstanding and sometimes -- especially on the brink of war, when its counterpoint to what passes for prevailing opinion is most needed -- with mistrust. Only when tens of thousands of dissenters converge and take to the streets, as they did famously in Seattle in 1999 and last October in Washington, D.C., does the substance and scope of the country's activist community compel people to take notice. But, of course, activism on behalf of peace and social justice does not begin or end at mass demonstrations. "When people get to the street, it's almost always not the first option," says Tim Vining, executive director of Pittsburgh's Thomas Merton Center, an organization that tackles a wide array of social issues. "I mean, people think that we read the paper at the Merton Center and we say, 'Okay, let's go have a protest.' That's a lot of work." Vining has been hard at work in recent months, along with dozens of activists from Pittsburgh's numerous progressive organizations, planning the Pittsburgh Regional Antiwar Convergence. Between January 24 and January 26, organizers expect thousands of dissenters to take to the streets in protest of the George W. Bush administration's escalation of military action against Iraq. Protesters are expected to gather from all directions; no doubt the January 18 antiwar march in Washington, D.C. will feed the ranks. The Convergence's organizers promise that it will be the largest antiwar protest Pittsburgh has seen in at least 30 years. Pulp invited a number of local activists to meet at the Thomas Merton Center's Bloomfield office for a round-table discussion on the nature of activism, the current climate for dissent and next weekend's Convergence. Taking part were Vining; Edith Bell, a board member at the Merton Center and a member of the Raging Grannies; veteran activist Vincent Scotti Eirene of the Duncan and Porter House; Saleh Waziruddin of Zi Activism, who was recently called one of 10 young Pittsburghers to watch by Pittsburgh magazine; Toni Bartone of the Pittsburgh Organizing Group, whose members are integral in planning the Convergence; and Maura Jacob and Claire Schoyer of Pittsburgh Association of Peacemakers and Proactive Youth, an organization linking high-school activists across the city. What follows is excerpted from that conversation, which touched on everything from organizing techniques, the nature of nonviolence in a violent world and the definition of "idiot savant." While we talked, Edith Bell made bandages for protesters who might be injured in confrontations with authorities during the Convergence. Does street-level action promote dialogue and compromise or does it polarize people, push them into extreme positions? EIRENE: I think the street stuff is absolutely important because it's making the invisible dissent visible. It also breaks up the false unanimity, the illusion that somehow everyone is going along with this. If it alienates people -- well, it's sort of like in a romantic relationship: Things have to fall apart before they can come together. BELL: If it wouldn't have been for the street protests during the Viet Nam era, that war would have gone on and on and on. That helped to turn it. And right now, you see all these polls that have been taken -- 70 percent of the people are with the president? When you talk to people, nobody is. I don't know where they take these polls. And the media doesn't cover it, so unless we go into the streets and make a big brouhaha, the media is not going to cover our phone calls and the letters we write in protest. VINING: When people get to the street, it's almost always not the first option. That happens when we see the system not
Greek resistance.
Hello comrades, After a series of summits all around Europe, the EU bosses come to visit their partners in Greece and make decisions for us - without us. We announce that they will find us on their every step in our cities. We gonna be present wherever they go, and we gonna be by the side of the workers and the common people who resist in any possible way to the brutal capitalist globalisation. Because of that, some of the anti-authoritarians and anarchists (both groups and individuals) in Greece decided to create the "Anti-authoritarian Movement Salonika 2003" in order to organise our resistance against the plans of the local and global bosses. The first unofficial summit in Greece is taking place in the city of Nafplion at 24/01 and the subject of the summit is going to be about the working conditions and unemployment. We gonna be there to protest our opposition to the modern conditions of slavery. Our website is www.resistance2003.gr , and the first information is in Greek and Spanish (there's gonna be English and German soon). For contact and more infos email us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] We wish to listen opinions and suggestions from anyone interested in coming to Greece for the anti-summits. Basic tactical training in urban warfare from UK facists in Kanada.
INFORMATION ABOUT CANADIAN SOLDIERS BEING TRAINED IN URBAN TACTICAL WARFARE BY THE U.K. MILITARY IN OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD STREETS! ...from Fredericton Residents for Education on the Economically-motivated Deployment Of the Military (F.R.E.E.D.O.M.) In December, the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment (2RCR - mechanized infantry) engaged in the largest live-ammunition combat exercise in the Commonwealth at CFB Gage town - half an hour outside of Fredericton, NB. The troops fired almost $5 million worth of munitions during the night time training. It is unknown if shells using depleted uranium were used. Over the next six months, this group of unfortunate soldiers may be deployed anywhere in the world on behalf of a U.S.-led coalition within 72 hours (Daily Gleaner, December 28, 2002). As part of the 2RCR preparation for battle, Canadian soldiers, instructed by the BRITISH MILITARY, are engaged in basic tactical training in urban warfare on the downtown streets of Fredericton (Telegraph Journal, January 9, 2003). Overhead, military helicopters fly above Frederictons universities and residential neighbourhoods. The pilots fly low enough that their green camouflage bellies can be seen clearly from the ground. Armored vehicles, equipped with the latest military technology, travel on local highways with student driver signs displayed on the rear (Daily Gleaner, January 11, 2003). On February 18 and 19, 2RCR will participate in a paper military exercise during which soldiers will study infrastructure and consider it in the context of a military operation (Daily Gleaner, January 14, 2003). The Fredericton Mayor and City Council have already granted permission for this special event without consulting residents (on January 13). When F.R.E.E.D.O.M. called City Hall yesterday, we were told to contact CFB Gagetown for information. The City Hall clerk said they knew nothing beyond a nebulous, one-line statement. A transcription of the minutes from the last council meeting will not be available to the public until they are passed at the next council meeting. There will be a FULL GALLERY at the next open City Council meeting - with many more spilling outside. The mayor has some explaining to do! WE WONT ACCEPT OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD STREETS BEING USED TO TRAIN SOLDIERS FOR AN URBAN WAR WE DONT CONDONE! WE WANT THE U.K. AND U.S. MILITARY PERSONNEL DEPORTED FROM OUR COMMUNITY! On February 18 and 19, F.R.E.E.D.O.M. encourages all Fredericton and New Brunswick residents to walk through OUR STREETS with information pamphlets describing the very real threat of depleted uranium sickness (2000 of the 4,500 soldiers who served in the previous Gulf War experienced severe sickness upon their return), the probability of many more Canadian friendly fire deaths (1/3 of U.S. coalition casualties in the previous Gulf War resulted from friendly fire) and the cruel injustice of continued U.S. aggression against Iraq. We will do our best to educate these young and impressionable soldiers. Perhaps we can save their health, their lives and their consciences by convincing them to stay at home. Some residents may choose to carry pots and pans to make noise when they see U.S. or U.K. soldiers trying to instruct younger recruits in matters military. More creative, and equally legal, strategies to come. This is our community. These are our sidewalks. In the meantime, please contact Fredericton Mayor Les Hull and other city council members. In your own words, explain why you, personally, feel it is unacceptable to use our community to train soldiers for a war we do not condone. Dr. Richard Dafe Branch Manager EcoBank International. Idumota Branch Lagos Nigeria. I am Dr. Richard Dafe The Branch Manager of EcoBank International,Idumota Branch,Lagos Nigeria. I have an urgent and very confidential business proposition for you. On December, 1997, a Taiwanese Oil consultant/contractor with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Boris Chen made a numbered time (Fixed) Deposit for Twenty-Four calendar months, valued at US$25,000,000.00 (Twenty- five Million Dollars) in my branch. Upon maturity, I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but got no reply. After some months, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his contract employers, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation that Mr. Boris Chen died from an airplane crash ( Singapore Airlines). On further investigation, I found out that he died without making a WILL,and all attempts to trace his next of kin was fruitless. I therefore made further investigation and discovered that Mr. Boris Chen did not declare any kin or relations in all his official documents, including his Bank Deposit paperwork in my Bank. This sum of US$25,000,000.00 is still sitting in my Bank and the interest is being rolled over with the principal sum at the end of each year. No one has ever come forward to claim it. According to Nigerian Law, at the expiration of 5 (five) years, the money will revert to the ownership of the Nigerian Government if nobody applies to claim the fund. Consequently, my proposal is that I will like you to stand in as the next of kin to Mr.Boris Chen so that the fruits of this old man's labour will not get into the hands of some corrupt government officials. This is simple, I will like you to provide immediately your full names and address so that the Attorney will prepare the necessary documents and affidavits which will put you in place as the next of kin. We shall employ the services of two Attorney for drafting and notarization of the WILL and to obtain the necessary documents and letter of probate/administration in your favour for the transfer. A bank account in any part of the world which you will provide will then facilitate the transfer of this money to you as the beneficiary/next of kin. The money will be paid into your account for us to share in the ratio of 70or me and 25or you and 5% be used in settling taxation and all local and foreign expenses. There is no risk at all as all the paperwork for this transaction will be done by the Attorney and my position as the Branch Manager guarantees the successful execution of this transaction. If you are interested, please reply immediately via the private email address below. Upon your response, I shall then provide you with more details and relevant documents that will help you understand the transaction. Please observe utmost confidentiality, and be rest assured that this transaction would be most profitable for both of us because I shall require your assistance to invest my share in your country. I can be reached through this email address. I do urgently await your response or reach me through my confidential and private fax 234-9-272-1684. Best regards, Dr. Richard Dafe ___ EC Plaza!!! Open Letter to all Members of the Canadian Armed Forces:
January, 2003 Friends, As soldiers, you have sworn to protect Canada and Canadians, even at the risk of your own lives. Few occupations require such dedicated commitment and potential sacrifice, and we cannot help but feel in our hearts a touch of the fear and anxiety which must be facing you and your families. But Canada and Canadians are not under threat from the people of Iraq, against whom a massive escalation of war is likely to be launched soon. Most of the world is amazed that the U.S. is hellbent on war, desperately seeking a pretext, any pretext, no matter what the cost, no matter if there is no substantial reason offered. (Although the media only covers a small percentage of it, we're sure you are aware of the massive demonstrations against war across North America and Europe.) To this moment, there has been not one shred of evidence of an Iraqi link to Osama bin Laden, not one shred of evidence that Iraq is planning a war of aggression against its neighbours, not one shred of evidence that Iraq has the current capacity to launch weapons of mass destruction. This is not to defend in any way the brutal dictatorship of Saddam Hussein, but we need to ask ourselves why there is such a focus on Iraq when Canada, the U.S., and U.K. support dozens of similarly brutal regimes around the globe, all of which commit gross abuses of human rights. A cursory glance at the website of a reputable organization such as Amnesty International confirms this. You likely have your own suspicions about this intentional war, which clearly seems more about gaining Western control over Iraq's huge oil reserves than unfounded allegations about weapons of mass destruction. Indeed, just look at the casual response to North Korea's nuclear weapons program, one far more advanced than anything Iraq possesses. But you are probably not allowed to voice these concerns, because your duty is to follow orders. It is in this context that we want to speak with you as fellow Canadians genuinely concerned about your safety as well as the welfare of the people who have the most to lose in this planned war: the people of Iraq, already suffering from the massive bombardment of 1991, from the deadly radioactive legacy of over 300 tonnes of depleted uranium dropped on that country, and the devastating sanctions which have claimed over a million lives. Indeed, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning group International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War estimates immediate casualties of a war against Iraq could number in excess of half a million people. This does not include the massive refugee crisis, famine, and environmental disaster that is likely to befall the region as well. Indeed, the United Nations estimates 10 million Iraqis could be put at risk of disease and hunger following an invasion, and failure to provide immediate assistance in such a situation would prove lethal. It is in such troubled times that we are all faced with difficult choices. As soldiers, some of you have told us that yours is not to question but simply to serve, to serve those who send you overseas to fight. But we believe at this crucial time that as soldiers, you DO have a choice: a choice to act morally, legally, safely, to avert the even greater humanitarian disaster that awaits the Iraqi people. Quite simply, we are encouraging you to lay down your weapons and refuse to fight. Under international and Canadian law, this is not only your right, it is also your obligation under the below-mentioned Nuremberg Principles. And as law-abiding citizens, we have a responsibility and a commitment to support you in coming to and dealing with your decision not to fight. If thousands of men and women like yourselves refused to fight, it would make current and future war plans difficult, if not impossible, to carry out. We also write because you, like the veterans of the 1991 war against Iraq, will likely return home and receive little or no support or compensation whatsoever from the War Dept. in dealing with deadly Gulf War Syndrome (radioactive poisoning from exposure to depleted uranium) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (suffered by one-third of Gulf War vets) The white men who send you to war (John McCallum, Bill Graham, and John Chretien, among others) will not be sharing with you some key information. You have a right to know the following: A. Like all wars, the escalation of the ongoing war against the Iraqi people is illegal. It violates some of the most basic precepts of international laws and treaties to which Canada is a party, including: *the Treaty Providing for the Renunciation of War as an Instrument of National Policy (aka Kellogg-Briand Pact, agreed to in 1928) * the Declaration of St. Petersburg (Declaration Renouncing the Use in Time of War of Explosive Projectiles Under 400 Grammes of Weight) * Resolution on the Non-Use of Force in International Relations and Permanent Prohibition on the Use of Nuc

Re: Petro's catch-22 incorrect (Re: citizens can be named as enemy combatants)
John Kelsey wrote: No policy toward anyone isn't possible once there's any kind of contact. There are terrorists who'd want to do nasty things to us for simply allowing global trade, or for allowing trade with repressive regimes like Saudi Arabia or Nigeria, or for selling weapons to countries with bad human rights records. Osama Bin Laden might not hate us, but *someone* would. Baloney. The terrorists have made it pretty clear what their gripe with the U.S. Government is, and it has nothing to do with trade, the American lifestyle, or the elusive freedoms that Americans supposedly enjoy. It has everything to do with US troops stationed in nearly every country in the world (specifically, Saudi Arabia), meddling in Middle Eastern conflicts (the never-ending Israeli-Arab feud), and the steady stream of Arab corpses that Clinton and the Bushes have produced over the last ten years or so (thousands of Afghani civilians killed by US bombs in the last year or so; the bombing of Iraq that has stretch uninterrupted from the beginning of the Persian Gulf War to the present day). Neutrality and noninterventionism work spectacularly well as a foreign policy. Just take a look at Switzerland: seven centuries of peace and freedom, with the exception of a few years during the Napoleanic era, and never a problem with terrorists. Even if we were just an economic giant with little foreign policy, we'd still have an impact by which countries we chose to trade with How about "Friendship and free trade with all, entangling alliances with none," to quote Thomas Jefferson? A trade policy that doesn't choose favorites avoids any problem of others wishing to influence U.S. trade policy.

The crimes affecting our corporate partners include computer hacking, intellectual property crimes (criminal trademark and copyright infringement) and identity theft. These crimes are costing the high technology community billions of dollars and stunting the acceptance and growth of these technologies to support our economy. Antiquated investigative methods and poor individual accountability for Internet communications are some of the greatest challenges facing law enforcement. The solution to some of these challenges may lie within the academic community. The talk will focus on several brief case studies relating our greatest challenges in fighting high technology crime. Re: Petro's catch-22 incorrect (Re: citizens can be named as enemy combatants)
John Keley wrote... "There are terrorists who'd want to do nasty things to us for simply allowing global trade, or for allowing trade with repressive regimes like Saudi Arabia or Nigeria, or for selling weapons to countries with bad human rights records." Hummm...kind of an odd argument, don't you think? Should it still be called "terrorism" if there exist those that oppose a world-wide oppressive and corrupt regime that in turn props up any petty dictator that smells as rotten as we are? "Osama Bin Laden might not hate us, but *someone* would." Well, perhaps we fucked with the wrong guy. In other words, its one thing to piss off a small number of people, but if you keep stomping around the globe screwing people over and spouting tired rhetoric, you're bound to attract the attention of someone with enough money, networks, determination and religious zealotry who makes it their mission in life to take you out. Perhaps its no big coincidence that OBL is Saudi and that we've supported and propped up the repressive Saudi regime for years. (He's also stated many times that one of his goals is to topple the corrupt Saudi regime and to remove American control.) It's funny...but I think I just understood what "infidel" means... "Even if we were just an economic giant with little foreign policy, we'd still have an impact by which countries we chose to trade with, and if someone could improve their fortunes by several billion dollars a year by finding a few gullable guys to strap dynamite to themselves and blow up shopping malls and such, I'm sure they'd do just that." Perhaps we should try it and see? Ah well. But remember, it just might be that OBL and Co are not just half a dozen guys in a Pakistani cave. Perhaps there are thousands who are almost equally angry, and every time the Israelis use one of our whiz-bangs to kill their kids, we add a few more to the roster of those willing to strap dynamite to themselves. BTW...a Muslim co-worker sardonically stated recently that our new war with Iraq is just a way to show more smart missle "advertisements" to the petty dictators we peddle our stuff to. -TD _ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

Mrs. Roseline Coleman
Dear friend, I am Mrs. Roseline Coleman wife to the late Chife Paul Coleman from Sierra Leon. I am writing you in absolute confidence primarily to seek your assistance to transfer our cash of thirty Million Dollars ($30,000.000.00) now in the custody of a private Security trust firm in Europe the money is in trunk boxes deposited and declared as Precious stones by my late Husband as a matter of fact the company does not know the content as money, although my husband made them to under stand that the boxes belongs to his foreign partner.Source of the money: My late Husband Chief Paul Coleman , a native of Mende District in the Northerh province of Sierra Leone, was the General Manager of Sierra Leone Mining co-operation (S.L.M.C.) Freetown . According to my Husband, this money was the income accrued from Mining Co-operation's over draft and minor sales. Before the peak of the civil war between the rebels forces of Major Paul Koroma and the combined forces of ECOMOG peace keeping operation that almost destroyed my country, following the forceful removal from power of the civilian elected President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah by the rebels. My Husband had already made arrangement for I and my two children to be evacuated to Ivory coast with the CERTIFICATE OF DEPOSIT he made with a security firm in Europe through the aid of U.N evacuation team. During the war in my country, and following the indiscriminate looting of Public and Government properties by the rebel forces, the Sierra Leone mining coop. Was one of the target looted and it was destroyed. My husband including other top Government functionaries were attaked and killed by the rebels in November 2000 because of his relationship with the civilian Government of Ahmed Tejan Kabbah. As a result of my husbands's death , and with the information we got that the rebelsa are out for us the burden became too much for me to handle coupled with the ill health of my dauther she died in the process as i could not afford her a decent medical care. Our only hope now is in you and the boxes deposited in the Security Firm To this effect, I humbly solicit your assistance in the followings ways. 1. to assist me claim this boxes from the security Firm as our beneficiary 2. to transfer this money (USD$30M) in your name to your country 3. to make a good arrangement for a joint business investment on our behalf in your country and you, our Adviser/ Manager For your assistance, I have agreed with my only surviving son that 20% of the total amount will be for your effort and another 10 % to cover all the expenses that may incur during the business transaction, Last, I urge you to keep this transaction strictly confidential as no one knows our where about. ASSISTANCE.
FROM THE DESK :MR. VICTOR UZEME, Head,Auditing Department, Union Bank, plc. E-MAIL:[EMAIL PROTECTED] BUSINESS PROPOSITION I know this will reach you as a surprise, need not to worry as we are using the only secured and confidential medium available to seek for foreign assistance / partnership in a business transaction which is of mutual benefit. I work in the Auditing Department of the Union Bank Nigeria Plc, which I have served as an auditor and accountant for eighteen years. Presently I am the head of the Auditing Department. It is the tradition of the Union Bank Nigeria Plc to audit all dormant accounts at least once in five years. During the course of this exercise, it was discovered that an account containing the sum of USD$18.5 Million (Eighteen Million, Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) belonging to a foreign businessman, Engineer Peter Heindrich, who died five years ago in a ghastly air crash involving a Nigerian carrier, ADC Airline, is yet to be collected as none of his relatives has come forward for the claim. At this discovery, the auditing department then reported its findings to the Board of Directors, who after series of meetings has no choice other than to follow the Federal Government of Nigeria directive on unclaimed funds. Nigerian financial law clearly states that if an account remains dormant for a period of five years, six month notification should be given to the account owner after which the fund will be declared UNCLAIMABLE and then transferred into a trust fund solely operated by the Federal Government. In other similar circumstances, there has been cases where funds transferred to the Federal Government Trust Fund were either misused or stolen by senior government officers. This will definitely not be any different since the same government who could not account for the previous funds are still the same people hoping to manage this one. Having this in mind, myself and Two other top management staffs of this bank has decided to secretly scout for any foreign businessman who will assist us in the transferred of the said sum. If you agree to work with us as a team, we will furnish you with all that is required for the transfer to be effected while you will stand as a cousin / next of kin of late Engineer Peter Heindrich. The Union Bank Nigeria Plc is quite ready to hand over the fund to anyone who can come forward with proofs of genuine relationship with the deceased. My colleagues and I have access to the archives of late Peter Heindrich, we will provide you with all that you need to know. Also since we are working at top positions here at the banks head office, endorsing approvals in your favour will not be a problem as long as our direct involvement in this transaction is not mentioned to anybody. We heard from some reliable sources that some members of the board of directors are working to see that the fund is declared unclaimable because the Union bank stands to retain for itself the interest that may have accrue for the five years period the money was dormant. We on our part really want to trace any relative of the deceased but time is not on our side since the six months notification as stated in the constitution is fast eating up. At the successful transfer of the fund to your account, you will retain for yourself 30% of the total amount, 10% of the total amount shall be set aside to cover all expenses that may be incurred during the course of transfer. My colleagues and I shall retain the balance 60% . I wish to on behalf of my colleagues state categorically that this transaction is 100% risk free as long as you stick to our instructions. If anything goes wrong along the line, it can be easily traced to us since the file of the deceased has been termed classified by the bank. Myself and my colleagues (who are also involved in this deal) are among the privileged few who has any knowledge about the fund. Bearing this in mind, we have therefore put in place all machinery that will bring this transaction to successful completion. This we can 100% guarantee. If this proposal is okay by you and you do wish to take advantage of the trust we hope to bestow on you, then kindly get to me immediately via my e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] please provide me with your most confidential telephone and fax numbers where I can reach you immediately. Awaiting your urgent response. Yours truly, MR.VICTOR UZEME NOTE: THIS TRANSACTION SHOULD BE TREATED WITH UTMOST CONFIDENTIALITY. - This mail sent through MailService.MS -> http://www.MailService.ms

Before, I was thinking that he was talking about the passage where Onan pulls out and spills his seed on the ground, which, somehow, became a prescription against masturbation, although reading it, especially in context, is clearly just about pulling out. Or possibly against birth-control. "Thou shalt not pull out.", thus saith the Lord, "or in any other way deprive thy partner of the power of thy final orgasmic thrusting." 8-) Weird, isn't it, that this became so associated with masturbation that a very successful company -- "Onan" -- even would choose their name for generators, i.e., "self power" or "do it alone", etc., from that passage. Even weirder that it doesn't have the slightest thing to do with jacking off, but with someone not willing to accept their (at the time) societal duty to support his dead brother's wife and father her children. -- Harmon Seaver CyberShamanix http://www.cybershamanix.com

Shannon Peace Camp.
Peace Camp Established at Shannon Airport On one of the coldest nights of 2003 thus far, a Peace Camp was established [ 1 ] in the evening of 4 January at Shannon Airport. The camp kicked off with a twenty-four hour Women's Peace Camp, and quickly began to draw a huge amount of attention from the dominant Irish media. From 7 January to 12 January, up to thirty arcraft belonging to or chartered to the US military have passed through Shannon airport, and many of these have been observed and photographed by peace activists at the Shannon Peace Camp. Flights have been continuing, through the eve of protests planned on Saturday, 18 January. The Irish government has admitted that no searches are being carried out to ensure that these aircraft are not carrying weapons or war materials, thus breeching the country's constitutional status of neutrality [ audio ]. Coffee is about culture, about the sensual; it is about life from the bottom up, writes John Newton We rolled into Port-Bou on the French-Spanish border at dawn. The train stopped, we got off to stretch our legs, the first time those legs had touched Spanish soil. It was here it happened, the thunderclap of love at first sight. First sight, and first sniff as I walked in the door of my first Spanish cafe. Coffee and tobacco and garlic and that seductive olive smell that hangs over everything, everywhere. Silent men in shabby clothes and berets stood in a row sipping tiny cups of sin-black coffee, others of which lined the bar waiting to be drunk. As the men came in, they'd grab one and down it, then signal for another. These were farm workers on their way to the fields. Then (long ago, Franco's time) with no more than three words of Spanish (si, no, ole!), I had to point to get a coffee. The man behind the bar pushed it towards me. I took a sip. Hooee! What was that? I'd just had my first carajillo, half-coffee, half-brandy, the Spanish way to start the day. The jolt of the coffee and the fire of the brandy impart well-being, strength and confidence. Everything becomes at once clearer, and pleasantly fuzzy. In The World of Caffeine, authors Bennett Alan Weinberg and Bonnie Bealer suggest that, "One way to explain the industrial revolution is as the inevitable consequence of a world where people suddenly preferred being jittery to being drunk." In other words, they began their day with coffee rather than, as they used to in northern Europe, beer soup. This black and white split between two drugs, this assumption that to drink means to be drunk is so American, and the carajillo - the combination of the two drugs, in perfect disharmony, one revving up, the other fuzzing up - so Spanish, so Mediterranean, that it goes a long way, in retrospect, towards explaining my choice of one culture over the other. European - especially Italian - coffee is, in the words of Neapolitan writer Luciano de Crescenzo "not simply a liquid, but something that is, so to speak, halfway between liquid and air; a concoction that, as soon as it touches the palate, is sublimated and instead of going down goes up and up until it enters the brain where it nestles in a companionable sort of a way so that for hours on end a man can be working and thinking, 'What a wonderful cup of coffee I had this morning."' De Crescenzo's dreamy paean to coffee's magical powers is supported by science. "Caffeine's stimulating effects," write Weinberg and Bealer, "largely depend on its power to infiltrate the central nervous system." Caffeine passes through the blood-brain barrier "as if it did not exist" so as soon as you skol your espresso or sip your way through your cappuccino, the caffeine has been absorbed into your bloodstream, so that its concentration is virtually the same in "blood, saliva, and even breast milk and semen". But coffee is more than caffeine, it's culture. And how we take our daily hit says much about us. Dr Ernesto Illy of Italian premium coffee roaster Illycaffe believes that coffee divides the world in two. Writing in the New Yorker on Starbucks' plans for opening in Italy, Michael Specter quotes him as saying: "In the world there are espresso drinkers and there are other people ... In Italy, we are espresso drinkers. Americans are other people." So then, are mainly cappuccino-drinking Australians. Coffee is also about technology. What did America adopt as their main coffee-making tool? A French device designed to boil and spoil coffee: the percolator. And how can we forget that other American contribution, instant coffee? Let's try. The Germans did slightly better with the filter. But the Italians, beginning in the 19th century, designed and perfected the most efficient and effective method for turning ground coffee beans into a powerful, concentrated liquid, the espresso machine. The full story is told in a book by Australian coffee roaster Ian Bersten, Coffee Floats Tea Sinks. From Angelo Moriondo's 1885 machine, the first to control the supply of water and steam separately, to the first one-cup espresso machine made by Luigi Bezzera in 1901, to Desiderio Pavoni's addition of a steam valve to the Bezzera machine and down to Giovanni Achille Gaggia, whose 1947 machine was the first to present us with crema, that mantle of fine pale froth on the top of an espresso that signifies excellence in making. Gaggia's significance, according to Bersten was that " ... the machine was in control of the bean. The bean could hold nothing back." Especially in the hands of a good operator, now universally known as a barista. Two years flying around Australia judging a Barista of the Year competition gave me time to scrutinise these curious couriers of the coffee age. About 20 or 30 young men and women would prepare coffee for us - the same coffee, the same machine. And we

Fear and Loathing in Afghanistan.
Become As High As You Can Be Become As High As You Can Be. In a case riddled with hypocrisy, the United States Air Force this week began prosecuting two F-16 pilots, Major Harry Schmidt (37) and Major William Umbach (43), for killing four Canadian soldiers and injuring eight others in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan last April 17. ... If found guilty, each could face up to 64 years in jail, dishonorable dismissal and the loss of all pay, allowances and retirement benefits. ... The first prosecution witness, a senior US officer, Col. Lawrence Stutzriem strenuously defended the militarys war zone procedures and accused the pilots of disregarding them. Stutzriems testimony was entirely in line with the findings of twin US-Canadian military investigations, which recommended the charges. He described as extremely unusual Schmidts request to use 20-mm cannon fire to strafe ground forces he thought were attacking him and Umbach, who was flying alongside in another F-16. Stutzriem said he heard an air controller advising Schmidt to hold fire while they checked into reported surface-to-air fire, but within three minutes Schmidt declared self-defense and dropped his bomb. There was nothing CAOC could do for them [the Canadian soldiers], Stutzriem testified. The air crew was in complete control of the situation. Stutzriem also said he would have expected a skilled aviator such as Schmidt, a Top Gun fighter pilot school instructor, to have known about the Tarnak Farms firing range without having to be briefed in advance. Those killed were Sgt. Marc Leger, 29, Cpl. Ainsworth Dyer, 24, Pte. Richard Green, 21, and Pte. Nathan Smith, 27. All were members of Alpha Company, the third battalion of the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry, who had been engaged in a live-fire exercise at Tarnak Farms. ... They had been flying at 23,000 feet, far above the 600-feet range of the small arms that the Canadian soldiers were firing. Instead of evading any danger by climbing in altitude, and then waiting for confirmation before unloading their bomb, they simply assumedno doubt in line with the general conduct of the war in Afghanistanthat the people in their sights were armed supporters of the ousted Taliban government. Yet, it is also obvious that the airmen have been made scapegoats by the US military and the Bush administration. The official report itself acknowledges that the pilots were never told that the Canadians were training with live ammunition because the command center did not require such exercises to be reported. ... Moreover, Schmidt and Umbach were nearing the end of what would be a 20-hour shift, despite Air Force regulations limiting shifts to no more than 12 hours. They also wore night-vision goggles, which can distort peripheral vision and depth perception. But perhaps the most damaging revelation is that the Air Force gave the pilots Dexedrine, the stimulant dexamphetamine, allegedly as part of a fatigue management program for their long flights from Kuwait to Afghanistan and back. There were also no-go pills, usually the depressant Ambien, to help them sleep. The investigative report said the pills were not a factor, but experts have questioned that conclusion. According to Harvard University neurology professor Clifford Saper, the drug may make a pilot misjudge his abilities or a situation. The military maintains that the pills help keep pilots alert, but amphetamines are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to combat fatigue and are listed by the Drug Enforcement Administration as a Schedule Two Narcotic, in the same category as Cocaine. Amphetamines are known on the street as uppers or speed and are addictive. In an investigative report, the American ABC television network said there were reports that during the Gulf War, American pilots became psychologically addicted to the go pills. Yet, the report claimed, the Air Force has informed pilots they could be considered unfit to fly certain missions if they did not voluntarily take the pills. Dr. Robert DuPont, a former White House drug czar and a leading US authority on drug addiction, told ABC: Its a frightening concept to me from my experience in dealing with amphetamines to have it as a routine activity... people who get strung out on amphetamines are usually crazy. Theyre paranoid, they stop eating. Their judgment is impaired and they do very bad things. They are among the sickest of all drug addicts. As the hearing opened, there was further evidence of a whitewash to protect more senior officers. ... Apart from the protection of higher officers, the pilots have been targeted for unusually harsh treatment for definite political reasons. The first is to cover up the roots of such reckless conductthe military aggression unleashed by the US against the people of Afghanistan. The use of disorienting stimulant drugs in and of itself ensures
Allied Assault.
Is Dos is Good... Game server flaw poses attack threat By Robert Lemos Staff Writer, CNET News.com January 17, 2003, 3:04 PM PT Multiplayer game servers that let players attack each other in virtual worlds could be the latest tool for online scofflaws to digitally attack other computers on the Internet, a security firm said Thursday. In an advisory posted to the company's Web site, security consultancy PivX Solutions stated that popular multiplayer games that have servers supporting the GameSpy network--such as "Quake 3: Arena," "Unreal Tournament 2003" and "Battlefield 1942"--could be used to magnify a denial-of-service attack, in some cases by as much as 400 times. "This attack will go right through a lot of firewalls right now," said Geoff Shively, chief technical officer for the Newport Beach, Calif.-based company. "A single server can theoretically produce enough data to flood a T-1 (connection, or 1.5 Mbps)." The flaw occurs because servers that include the GameSpy networking code automatically send responses to queries for status information and don't verify the sender's address. An attacker can just ask the server for the information, but forge the data so that the packets appear to come from a fake address. When the game server responds, the large amount of information sent in reply goes to the target of the attack instead. Other games that PivX believes are vulnerable are "Quake," "Quake 2," "Half-Life," "Tribes," "Return to Castle Wolfenstein," "Medal of Honour: Allied Assault," "NeverWinter Nights," and "America's Army." Versions of the game servers that are released on the Linux platform are affected as well. "As a basic rule of thumb, if it supports GameSpy, it will likely be vulnerable," Mike Kristovich, a security researcher for PivX, said in a statement. David Wright, director of technology for GameSpy, acknowledged that the amount of data that the attack could generate was "significant." Yet he downplayed the seriousness of the flaw. "It is not something that is used often, because if anyone wants to do a denial-of-service attack, they are far more likely to use servers that they have taken control of," Wright said. GameSpy expected to send out guidelines to its partners on how to limit the effect of an attack. It also plans to provide a patch to limit the rate that the game servers would respond to requests for status. Such a fix is long overdue, said Marc Maiffret, chief hacking officer for vulnerability assessment company eEye Digital Security. Citing discussions between security experts about the susceptibility of "Quake 2" to the same technique when that game was released, he said that security experts have known about the problem for some time. "While this is not a new technique it is good that it is being 'rediscovered,' because obviously games are still vulnerable," he said. "It's a 'catch-22' situation where security, in some cases, has to be sacrificed in order to have the performance these network games require." The problem takes advantage of Internet data known as the user datagram protocol, or UDP. Unlike the more common transmission control protocol, or TCP, packets that make up the majority of Internet traffic, UDP data doesn't require a connection to be established between a server and client. That allows an attacker to send a UDP packet with a phony source address; when the victim server responds to the UDP data, it will actually be sending data--as an attack--to the target server specified in the forged source address. For the long list of game servers included in the advisory, UDP packets are used to send commands, say, to request the status of the server. By sending a constant stream of packets that include the address of a specific target, the much larger status information will inundate the target network. "'Battlefield 1942' is the best example of this," said Shively. "It sends a large amount of data in reply to a single request." By PivX's calculations, commands sent to a "Battlefield 1942" server at 4Kbps will turn into a 550Kbps attack on a target. He added that software developers could fairly easily correct the problem. "They just have to push an update to the most popular games, and they are set," he said. I want to tell you...
...how I wasted 90$ on virus scan. Court: Network Associates can't gag users By Lisa M. Bowman Staff Writer, CNET News.com January 17, 2003, 1:32 PM PT In a victory for free-speech advocates and product reviewers, a New York state judge has ruled that Network Associates can't prevent people from talking about its products. New York state Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Shafer issued a ruling, made public this week, prohibiting the security software specialist from trying to use its end-user license agreements to ban product reviews or benchmark tests. The judge called the company's attempted ban "deceptive" because it implied consumers who conducted the reviews would be violating the law, when they would not. Shafer has not ruled on damages. The New York attorney general's office began investigating the case after Network World Fusion magazine published an unfavorable review of the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company's "Gauntlet" firewall software in 1999. According to the ruling, Network Associates demanded a retraction and accused the magazine of violating its licensing agreement. At the time, the agreement stated that people could not review or test Network Associates products without prior approval from the company. The attorney general's office filed suit last year, claiming the licensing agreement's language may cause people to believe that they're breaking the law by reviewing the product without consent. "Such clauses censoring speech and criticism chill not only consumers' speech, but also prevent academics, consumer advocates and technology experts alike from openly and freely discussing software products," New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said in a statement. "Restrictions like these threaten to hinder the spirit of innovation and critical appraisal the public needs to keep software effective, efficient and safe." Network Associates said it plans to appeal the ruling. "I just don't see how we've deceived anyone," said Kent Roberts, executive vice president and general counsel for Network Associates. "Our goal here was to actually increase the amount of information available to customers." Roberts said the company inserted the phrasing in question into its agreements to help make sure reviews and benchmarks reflected the current version of the product. He said the ruling would not affect the company operationally, because it has been in the process of changing the language of its contracts for nearly a year. But it could also affect other software makers who insert such terms into their agreements. "I think they should be quite interested in the case," he said. Particularly, Roberts points to a part of the judge's ruling that requires Network Associates to notify the court within 30 days if it makes further changes to the disputed language. End-user license agreements have become a hot-button issue in the tech industry as more and more companies try to forge increasingly restrictive contracts. Some companies have tried to ban class-action lawsuits, requests for damages or reverse engineering of their products. The ruling in the Network Associates case is believed to be the first to prohibit bans on software reviews. The case doesn't necessarily have any immediate legal impact outside of New York state, but it may force other technology companies to tone down their licensing agreements or risk running afoul of consumer protection or free-speech laws. "It seems a very clear warning to software companies that these types of provisions are not a good idea," said Fred von Lohmann, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF. "The software industry is going to have to grow up and treat consumers with the same respect that other industries have been forced to." http://news.com.com/2100-1023-981228.html?tag=fd_top
Shane Robison signs his own death warrant.
IT glitches in homeland security By Shane Robison January 17, 2003, 7:38 AM PT The United States prides itself in being one nation. Yet in terms of technology, we are not yet one, but remain a nation of many--many systems, many standards and many databases. In the realm of homeland security, this is not good. Because the nation's information systems are not standardized or interconnected, hundreds of millions of Americans are at risk. This is an aspect of homeland security we can and must change. Information critical to homeland security needs to move like cars on an interstate highway, across borders and around the country with a common set of rules. It needs to flow horizontally among federal agencies, as well as vertically among federal, state and local governments. And perhaps most importantly, it needs to flow to those responsible for public health to provide us with early detection and to arm first responders with accurate information. We have the power to make this happen. We do not need to invent something new. The right technologies exist. We simply need the organizational ingenuity--and the political willpower--to put our know-how to work. So where do we start? Replacing the federal government's core information technology systems is not an option. That would take at least 10 years. Replacing the federal government's core information technology systems is not an option. A good place to begin would be with collaboration and data sharing across multiple government agencies, jurisdictions and disciplines. In other words, let's share what we've got. The Homeland Security Department should help by enabling the integration of watch lists with federal and civilian databases. A small group of systems engineers within Homeland Security, building on existing civilian solutions by using cutting-edge programming techniques, could drive fast development and rapid prototyping. They could deliver a cost-effective solution within six months. Longer term, we need to integrate relevant federal, state and local databases, so those who track terrorists can identify patterns of behavior that could alert us to possible attacks. Real-time data mining is already in use in retailing and readily adaptable to the needs of government. By applying pattern-matching techniques, this provides near real-time alerts when it identifies a particular pattern of behavior. This instant flow of information could be the centerpiece of our strengthened domestic-security efforts. At the same time, we must also respect a citizen's constitutional right to protect his or her own personal information. A long-term program must therefore be the re-engineering of the IT systems of all agencies responsible for homeland security. This initiative would require an updating, but not a complete overhaul, of the federal technology infrastructure. Security agencies must be able to create an information repository that can receive, synthesize and analyze unstructured data from many different sources--a task for which workable technologies already are available. It is also time to change the way agencies buy the technologies they need. Most federal agencies lag private industry in securing the best technologies, in part because of cumbersome purchasing procedures. The federal request-for-proposals process is compounded by an ineffective and outdated federal procurement cycle. The Homeland Security Department should not be seen as a bureaucratic burden. These impediments hobble Washington's ability to meet today's fast-changing priorities in national security. Companies are often asked to provide the government with multiyear, end-to-end IT solutions, yet the skewed federal procurement process often tilts toward the cheapest individual product, rather than more advanced solutions that can fulfill the missions more effectively. And because the procurement process works on year-to-year budgets, multiyear contracts--which lower the total cost of ownership--are rarely considered. The government and the private sector have a shared stake in streamlining the procurement process. The Homeland Security Department should not be seen as a bureaucratic burden but as an opportunity to promote more effective uses of information technologies in ways that enhance Americans' security and liberty. The new department can help the nation join its many sources of information into one communications highway. The stakes have never been so high, and the technological promise has never been so great. Shane Robison is Hewlett-Packard's chief technology officer and its senior vice president for corporate strategy and technology. http://news.com.com/2010-1071-981124.html This is another nail in Whit's coffin too.
Foreign entanglements
On Saturday, January 18, 2003, at 08:01 AM, Kevin S. Van Horn wrote: John Kelsey wrote: No policy toward anyone isn't possible once there's any kind of contact. I agree completely with this. The 911 attackers would not have gotten up the energy to attack over such a side issue as American consumerism or godlessness or whatever. Those things just don't generate the hatred. How about "Friendship and free trade with all, entangling alliances with none," to quote Thomas Jefferson? A trade policy that doesn't choose favorites avoids any problem of others wishing to influence U.S. trade policy. Exactly. --Tim May
Israel's WOMD.
Last KGB Spy to be Released in Israel Information about his arrest and conviction was kept secret within 10 years The most high-ranking Soviet spy detained in Israel, Marcus Klingberg, will be released from under house arrest in two weeks. Marcus Klingberg, 84, has been serving his 20-year sentence for revelation of Israel's secrets to the Soviet Union. He has been under house arrest since 1998. The punishment was commuted for house arrest because of the prisoner's poor health: he had suffered from several cerebral hemorrhages by 1998. Information about arrest of the Soviet spy appeared for the first time in 1991; by that moment, the leading Israeli scientist Marcus Klingberg had been in prison for eight years already. However, Israel's military censorship allowed journalists to report just basic information concerning the event, no details. Klingberg worked at one of Israel's most secret military objects. He was arrested in January 1983, and in four months, the man was accused of espionage in favor of the Soviet Union. His family had to keep the information about Klingberg's location secret. Sometimes the relatives even had to say lies to journalists when they were asked questions about Marcus. Currently, Marcus Klingberg is 84 years old. Within the years of 1957-1975, he took the post of vice-president of the secret Biological Institute near Tel Aviv and informed the Soviet Union about secret chemical and biological programs of Israel. This spy activity seriously undermined Israel's capability to protect itself from attacks using weapons of mass destruction. Yossi Melman, Israeli intelligence specialist, the co-author of a new book called "The Spies: Israel's Counter- Espionage Wars" says: "No doubt, the case of Marcus Klingberg is the most destructive spy scandal over the whole history of Israel." Marcus Klingberg immigrated in Israel in 1948. At the beginning of WWII he escaped from Poland and studied medicine in the Soviet Union. Then he served in the Israeli army as a doctor, worked in the Biological Institute in Nes Ziona and lectured medicine in the University of Tel Aviv. The Institute has been secret for several decades; its activity is still controlled by the military censorship. Scientists of the Institute have been working for Israeli military structures since the country became independent. In accordance with the information published abroad, the Institute started serious developments of weapons of mass destruction, vaccines and antidotes for different killing substances only at the beginning of the 1960s, when Egypt used a toxic gas during the civil war in Yemen. As Melman informed, Klingberg contacted the USSR for the first time in 1957, and soon after that he started his espionage activity. Over the years of his work at the Institute, Marcus Klingberg handed results of all researches, including those concerning antidotes developed in Israel, over to the Soviet Union. During the "cold war" the USSR cooperated with the Arab nations. The Israeli authorities decided that information about the vaccines developed in Israel became available for the Arab intelligence services, which certainly deprived the country of effective protection. Yossi Melman wrote that Klingberg was guided by ideological motives, although at the very beginning he could be recruited as an agent with the help of blackmail. Marcus Klingberg felt obliged to the Soviet Union, where he had found refuge from Nazis and studied medicine. He believed in the doctrine of the deterrent balance; he thought that peace would be guaranteed only in case if the West and the East would had the same weapon. Israel's foreign and domestic intelligence agencies, Mossad and Shin Beth has been suspecting Klingberg of espionage for many years, but shadowing brought no results. The scientist also successfully passed the lie detector test. In January 1983, Shin Beth officers decided to employ different methods. They informed Klingberg they wanted to send him to Malaysia where a chemical plant blew up. In several days, the man left home with a suitcase, but he was delivered not to an airport but to some apartment for interrogations that lasted for several days. Within ten days, Shin Beth investigators browbeat Klingberg and even threatened him with death, and finally wrung a confession from him. The scientists told about his relations with the USSR in detail. In his words, he wasn't paid for the information he provided. It is supposed that when the Soviet ex-spy is released, he will go to Paris where his daughter and grand-daughter live. Dmitry Chirkin PRAVDA.Ru http://english.pravda.ru/main/2003/01/15/42060.html
Charges of "spying" and "leading a terrorism organization"
China to put US-based dissident on trial for 'spying' BEIJING: A US-based Chinese democracy activist will be tried next week on charges of "spying" and "leading a terrorism organization," a US-based dissident group said Thursday. Wang Bingzhang, who was missing for six months before Chinese authorities admitted in December they had arrested him, is to be tried January 22 in the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court in south China's Guangdong province, the Free China Movement (FCM) said in a statement. Wang's daughter, who lives in Los Angeles, was notified by two law offices in Shenzhen Wednesday that they have been selected by her incarcerated father to represent him on the charges, FCM said. Wang's daughter could not be reached for comment. Wen Chao, a lawyer at the Guangzhou Pacific Law Office, told AFP he was representing Wang, but refused to comment further. Yang Min, an attorney with Nan Fang Law Office, could not be reached. Family members and friends have demanded proof Wang, 54, asked them to be his lawyers and requested the right to visit him, FCM said. The group and other dissidents claim Wang and two other overseas dissidents were kidnapped by Chinese secret agents near the Chinese border in Vietnam in June when they travelled there to meet Chinese labor activists. They last communicated with their families June 26 from near the border. China said it had formally arrested Wang December 5 for espionage and engaging in "violent terrorist activities," claiming he had been in contact with Taiwan's espionage organizations since the early 1980s and was paid by them for collecting "state secrets." Authorities released the other two, French resident Yue Wu and US resident Zhang Qi, who have both returned home. Beijing did not explain why the three had been in custody for so long. Lian Shengde, FCM's executive director, and other dissidents have balked at the charges and said Chinese officials have no right to try Wang when he was forcefully brought into Chinese territory, violating international law. http://www.jang.com.pk/thenews/jan2003-daily/17-01-2003/world/w8.htm
Set up by the CSIS?...or Mossad?
Lawyers for the federal government have dismissed suggestions that a Hamilton man convicted by a French court of supplying forged documents to a terror cell is an innocent man caught up in a conspiracy concocted by spy agencies. "There is no evidence of that," Justice Department counsel Howard Piafsky told a Toronto judge. "None." Mr. Piafsky, who is representing the government at the extradition hearing of 38-year-old Abdellah Ouzghar, scoffed at theories advanced by Mr. Ouzghar's lawyer, Rocco Galati, who has told the court that Mr. Ouzghar is the victim of a payback scheme orchestrated by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service after his client refused to spy for them. "He [Mr. Galati] seems to indicate that there was some sort of conspiracy," Mr. Piafsky said. "There wasn't." Mr. Ouzghar is at the centre of a high-stakes extradition case that will determine whether he will be sent to France, where a court convicted him in absentia for supplying forged documents to terrorists responsible for a string of attacks in Europe. Mr. Galati has dismissed the French case against his client as "smoke and mirrors," concocted after Mr. Ouzghar refused to spy for CSIS. Mr. Piafsky painted a far more sinister picture of Mr. Ouzghar, linking him to a long list of players in an international web of terror, including Ahmed Ressam, a former member of the Montreal Islamic community who was convicted in 2001 of plotting to blow up the Los Angeles airport. The court was told that Mr. Ouzghar, who used to lived in Montreal, often visited an apartment in Ville d'Anjou where Mr. Ressam lived. Mr. Ouzghar has admitted that he knew Mr. Ressam, but says that the association meant nothing -- he said in court that he knew Mr. Ressam only as a casual acquaintance. Mr. Piafsky also cited Mr. Ouzghar's links to Fateh Kamel, who also lived in Montreal at the same time as Mr. Ouzghar, and is described in investigative documents as a member of a terror cell. According to a French court document, Mr. Kamel was recorded on a European wiretap espousing violent fundamentalism. Mr. Galati told the court earlier this week that there is no actual connection between his client and the terrorists cited in the French documents. He said Mr. Ouzghar has been ensnared in a scheme that involved intelligence services in France, Morocco and Canada. Mr. Galati told the court that the scheme began after Mr. Ouzghar was visited by CSIS agents in 1996 and asked to provide information about other members of the Montreal Islamic community, including Mr. Ressam. When he refused, Mr. Galati said, CSIS trapped him by having him detained during a visit to Morocco, where secret police took away his passport and told him he would never get back to Canada unless he agreed to spy for CSIS. Mr. Piafsky told the court yesterday that there is no proof of any such scheme. "The evidence does not indicate any credible link between the French, Moroccan and Canadian agencies," he said. "He [Mr. Galati] seems to indicate that there was some sort of conspiracy. There wasn't." Mr. Piafsky said CSIS agents had visited Mr. Ouzghar four times, and that there had been an obvious reason for each visit -- as when agents visited him after Mr. Ressam's arrest in 1999, and again in 2001, shortly after the Sept. 11 terror attacks on New York and Washington. "It is obvious from the timing of the interviews why CSIS would be interested in talking to anyone who knew Ahmed Ressam," Mr. Piafsky said. "Each visit coincided with a significant event with which Mr. Ouzghar had a connection." Mr. Galati has subpoenaed CSIS agents involved in the case against his client, insisting that their testimony is vital to the court's decision on whether to extradite Mr. Ouzghar. Lawyers for the federal government have asked that the subpoenas be quashed. The judge is expected to rule today on whether the agents can be ordered to testify. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/PEstory/TGAM/20030117/UOUZGN/national/national/nationalTheNationHeadline_temp/5/5/26/
Polygraphs and Phrenology.
Lie detectors can be fooled January 17, 2003 Lie detectors can work in specific cases, but are of little use in general screening, a study has found. After interviewing polygraph experts at the CIA, FBI and other agencies, a panel at the National Academy of Sciences in America found that it is possible to fool a lie detector, especially if the test is conducted to screen for general criminal or spy activity and not for some specific act. The committee decided, that based on their study results, polygraphs cannot be relied on for mass screenings of employees because they may produce false results or can be fooled by someone trained to do so. Better detection system needed Thousands of polygraph tests are carried out each year on job applicants and employees, and there are inevitable disputes. The panel conducted the study by visiting polygraph facilities at several government agencies and examining large numbers of reports and published papers, attempting to understand both sides in the debate on polygraph accuracy. Their conclusion, tabled in a report entitled The Polygraph and Lie Detection (2002), was that although polygraphs can sometimes work, a better system is needed. They found that in untrained employees, screening for a specific incident, a polygraph test can discriminate lies from truth telling at rates well above chance, although well below 100%. The report notes that sometimes a person may appear to be lying on a polygraph when in fact he or she is anxious. The lie detector can also be fooled by someone who has training - which, in the case of government agencies, would be precisely the people they are trying to screen out. Other security relaxed The over-reliance on polygraph tests for screening can create a false sense of security that may lead to less vigilance or the relaxation of other methods of ensuring security, the committee found. Stupid Intelligence.
he Senate's recent impasse wasn't just over how much money will go to each party to pay for its committee staffers. In their insistence on a power-sharing agreement, Senate Democrats also pushed for a dramatic change in the staffing structure of the Select Committee on Intelligence. According to Senate Republicans, Tom Daschle and the chamber's Democrats backed a plan to divide the committee's staff into two groups, reporting separately to the panel's Republican chairman and Democratic vice chairman. Sen. Pat Roberts (R., Kan.), the incoming chair of the committee, is up in arms over the proposal. "We should preserve our Intelligence Committee staff as a single unified staff that works for the committee as a whole under the supervision of the chairman and the vice chairman," Roberts said in a fiery statement on the Senate floor Tuesday. "The minority apparently wishes to divide the committee staff for the first time in history into majority minority or partisan camps." Roberts said the panel has been a unique institution in the Senate and was envisioned from its start in 1976 to operate under different rules than other committees. He contends the committee has worked well and effectively with a professional nonpartisan staff as originally intended and should continue to do so. "The incoming chairman and our leadership and the entire Senate should not be party or bystanders to what has been going on in the Senate for the last week or so," Roberts said. "We should not be part of this hell for leather ride down a partisan trail of obstructionism into a box canyon of delay, confusion, like a herd of cattle milling about in confusion and delay." The committee has made no comparable change in its history. When the committee was formed in 1976, members were allowed to nominate one staff member each to be placed on the panel's payroll and handle that member's committee issues. But over time, it became clear that the staffers felt a greater sense of loyalty to their sponsoring member rather than to the committee as an institution, and according to committee reports, some staffers worked on nonintelligence issues for their member. That system was scrapped at the beginning of the first session of the 104th Congress, and replaced with a system where staffers were assigned to work with specific senators on intelligence-related work. Despite the dramatic change proposed by the Democrats, the proposal received scant coverage beyond Robert's description of the dispute as "the kind of sandbox silliness that prompts folks to wonder if this body is the United States Senate or a partisan Romper Room." The importance of an experienced staff can't be overstated, according to a retired intelligence officer. "Very often, people who are chosen for staff positions on congressional committees are chosen for political payback position," the retired officer said. "People who are on congressional staffs are there because they have family connections or something. In an area like intelligence, you need people to be there to learn all these complications and to get some kind of mutual comprehension and trust with people like me who lived in this world." "The intelligence business is very secret and arcane, and it's hard for average people to get a grasp on it," he continues. "Senators are very busy people. Some of the staffers have become... not quite experts, but they've come to have a lot of experience in these areas, and then some of the senators haven't. The key people are the staff because they stay and they come to understand the other side and therefore there's good communication between those in the intelligence business and Congress." Sen. John D. Rockefeller of West Virginia, the incoming ranking Democrat on the committee, did not have any reaction to Roberts's comments on the floor, according to a spokeswoman. Roberts ended his comments with a veiled warning that he will have limited patience for Democratic criticism of the administration and the performance of intelligence agencies that doesn't match the facts. "We hear statements that this nation is no better prepared, intelligence-wise that we were prior to 9/11," he said. "Well, nothing hurts the truth so much as stretchin' it, and that is not only not true but borders on the politics of opportunism... The sad thing is that we did not have to go down this road. I always figure that it's a good thing to be a bit nicer than is called for, but don't take too much guff. It's time to end the guff." Rational anarchist watch.
Cyber citizen spies on a Pentagon spook By George Edmonson in Washington January 18 2003 The man who heads the Pentagon's efforts to develop a computer program to keep an electronic eye out for terrorists is himself the object of scrutiny. Although the John Poindexter Awareness Office was launched as a joke website on November 29 it has attracted thousands of hits and hundreds of responses. "I would like to eliminate the surveillance of Americans from the war on terror equation," said Stephen DeVoy, the computer scientist who set up the Poindexter page as part of his site of disorganised resistance at www.breakyourchains.org. The site focuses on Poindexter, who is developing a program to sift through enormous amounts of individual data to detect patterns that could indicate terrorist activity. Visitors to the site are urged ... "if you see Mr Poindexter purchase something, travel somewhere or do, well, anything, send us a tip describing your observations." And, while the site contains information on others who work with Poindexter, Mr DeVoy said he has received no reports on any of them. Much of what he has received on Poindexter, a former national security adviser to president Ronald Reagan and convicted felon of the Iran-Contra scandal, has not been posted, Mr DeVoy said, because it appeared libellous or not legitimate. Mr Devoy, 40, a "rational anarchist," said he is self-employed and will not reveal where he lives because he has received death threats. He said the Government should not be involved in individuals' lives, and his site is an example of individual dissent against his country's tendency to spy on on its own citizens who do not conform. Right. THIS group of terrorists has made ITS beef plain. But one thing you learn about Terror with a capital T, which I've been studying since 1974, is that it has its own ideology completely separate from and independent of the nominal Cause. That is, a "Muslim" terrorist has more in common with a "Marxist" terrorist than with a rank-and-file Muslim, which explains the fact that diverse terrorist groups with seemingly irreconcilable ideological differences readily collaborate when it is to mutual advantage. By the same token, schisms in terrorist groups invariably occur based on disagreements over tactics and strategy - NOT ideology (though ideological justification is often found and proclaimed post facto). Appeasement definitely will not bring an end to terror - quite the opposite, in fact. So to the extent that Western governments pursue genuine anti-terrorist measures, they should be supported. When they implement the terrorists' own agenda by abridging the freedom of their own citizens, they must be opposed. Marc de Piolenc
Archimedes' palimpest.
NARRATOR (JULIET STEVENSON): This is the story of a book that could have changed the history of the World. Lost for over a thousand years, it contains a unique record of the world and mind of one of the greatest men ever, a mathematical genius who was centuries ahead of his time: Archimedes. DR WILLIAM NOEL (The Walters Art Museum): When the manuscript first arrived, you know, shivers ran, ran down my spine. I have never before in my life handled a book that is the only material witness to the mind of someone who died 2,200 years ago. DR ROGER EASTON (Rochester Institute of Technology): This is a manuscript of incalculable value to the history of science. That feeling, that, that excitement was, was my, my first reaction. PROF. REVIEL NETZ (Stanford University): I think it's fair to say that western science is a series of footnotes to Archimedes. People trying to come to terms with the problems of Archimedes, people trying to produce works that are as great as Archimedes, that are greater than Archimedes. This is the goal, this is the goal of western mathematics. NARRATOR: As scientists worked to recover the text from this fragile document, they are discovering that Archimedes was further ahead of his time than they had ever believed. If his secrets had not lain hidden for so long the World today could be very different from what we know. Archimedes' manuscript is one of the most valuable ever found. Sold at auction for $2 million. The buyer refused to reveal his identity, only that he was a billionaire who'd made his money in IT, but research institutes all over the world wanted to work on his precious manuscript. Bin Laden seemed most strongly upset about the reconquest of of what we call Spain, but which muslims call by another name. In the most recent communique (which may not be Osama Bin Laden but his successor pretending to be him) he gave a Leninist rant that the arabs are poor because the rich countries are rich, espousing the Marxist argument that simply being a citizen of a wealthy country is a crime deserving of death. This makes me suspect that the original Bin Laden is now a grease smear on some Afghan rocks, since the original Bin Laden was a Heideggerean, and would spit on any Marxist unless that Marxist was dying of thirst in the desert. --digsig James A. Guide to getting away with it
TAXPAYERS have funded a booklet that tells children how to dodge drug charges. It also offers students advice on keeping abortions secret from their parents and provides excuses for carrying weapons. More than 225,000 copies of Am I Old Enough? have been sent to 546 secondary schools. Produced by Victoria Legal Aid, with funding of almost $100,000 from the Attorney General's office, the book has been described as "a louts' guide to getting away with it". Parents, family groups and the State Opposition have roundly condemned the 62-page guide. It tells children who inject drugs how to avoid being caught. Advice includes: "Never carry drugs on you when carrying syringes or visiting a needle exchange. "Used syringes or traces of drugs can be used as evidence of using a drug of dependence. Always flush syringes with water after using." Drug users are warned that admitting to their habits could lead to charges, and young smokers are told: "It is not against the law to smoke or carry cigarettes if you are under 18." Children are given tips on weapons they can use and "excuses" for having them. They are told: "You may use some weapons like a sword, large crossbow or imitation firearm if you use it safely and if you can prove you have lawful excuse to use it. A lawful excuse could include using the weapon for work, for sport or for a weapons collection, display or exhibition." Students are advised on dealing with police: "You don't have to answer questions, except those about your name and address. If you decide to make no comment to the police, stick with it for every question. The police must tell you why they want your name and address. If they do not give you a reason, you should ask for it." The booklet also tells students that there is no age limit on buying condoms or having an abortion. "You may be able to get an abortion without your parents' consent if the doctor thinks that you are mature enough to understand what you are doing," it advises. Problem students facing expulsion are told to secure a place in a new school before the punishment is brought down. The guide has provoked fury among parents' groups. Stephen Franzi-Ford, chief executive of the Association of School Councils in Victoria, said: "Most parents would be horrified that this information has been handed out to their children at school. "It's basically about how to flout the law." Australian Family Association national vice-president Bill Muehlenberg said: "It is a government publication telling children how to beat government laws, the police and parents." A spokesman for Attorney-General Rob Hulls said the Government had committed $117,000 to the VLA for translating and improving a wide range of publications. "The Bracks Government is committed to providing all Victorians with access to justice," the spokesman said. "There's no use in having legal rights and obligations if you don't know what they are." He declined to comment on the concerns of parents about the booklet's content. But Shadow Attorney-General Victor Perton accused the Government of irresponsibility and double standards in supporting the brochure with taxpayers' cash. "If the Education Minister and Attorney-General actually read this booklet, they might take steps to make sure there are warnings about the dangers as well as advice on how to avoid getting caught using and trafficking drugs," he said. "It seems to be a 'How to get away with it' guide." Parents Victoria senior vice president Elaine Crowle said: "It encourages kids not to take responsibility for their actions." Tony Parsons, managing director of Victoria Legal Aid, defended the guide and said only three schools had returned copies. "It's focus-tested by schools, students and teachers," Mr Parsons said. "It's a book that provides a whole range of information and resources on a whole range of issues. "We have had fabulous feedback from schools, saying that it has fulfilled a valuable role in terms of the schools' life education programs and legal education." http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,5858148%255E661,00 .html

New Defence bungle found By GERARD McMANUS 19jan03 THE Department of Defence moved the goal posts three times to ensure a private health company won a $140 million contract to run Victoria's defence hospitals and health services. In a new defence contracting problem uncovered by the Sunday Herald Sun, documents show how the department bent government contracting rules to ensure MayneHealth won the five-year contract to provide hospital and dental services to 12,000 defence personnel. MayneHealth is due to take over the health services next month. As part of the deal, the private contractor does not have to pay for power, gas, phones, computer links, meals, maintenance, pharmaceuticals and transport of patients, according to tender documents obtained by the Sunday Herald Sun. It only has to pay a nominal $1 rental on nine hospitals and health facilities. MORE http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,5857173%255E2862,00.html
More Terrorists Practise in WA.
After Aum and the Muslims, now come the state terrorists... SAS in Iraq curtain raiser By SIMON KEARNEY 19jan03 A REMOTE firing range in Western Australia was yesterday being used by Australian and US forces to practise bombing raids against Iraq. Troops from the Australian Special Air Service Regiment rehearsed the dangerous role they may be given behind enemy lines in the Gulf. The Australians used laser guidance equipment and radios to call in strikes by US Navy FA-18 Super Hornet attack jets, a task similar to their role in US air raids in Afghanistan. The US aircraft flew from RAAF Pearce pilot training base in the Swan Valley to Lancelin bombing range 100km north of Perth where the SAS troops were in position. The aircraft had arrived in WA aboard the carrier Abraham Lincoln, which is moored off Fremantle. One aircraft was slightly damaged on Friday when it overshot the runway on landing. The pilot was uninjured. The exercise, which began on Tuesday and concludes today, also included night search and rescue training with carrier pilots and liaison with US Navy special forces, known as Navy SEALs. The SAS has increased the training tempo as troops prepare to deploy to the Middle East. Defence Minister Robert Hill confirmed the SAS was training with the US Navy pilots in what will be their likely role in Iraq, but said the exercise had no official status. "Although we don't talk about what they're doing, I think some of them are helping with targeting and marking on the range, but I haven't interpreted it as a joint exercise," he said. Senator Hill said if called upon, the SAS would fulfil a similar role in Iraq to that in Afghanistan. "It's not dissimilar, in terms of reconnaissance patrols, targeting specific threats and bringing in support to eliminate those threats," he said. The Abraham Lincoln air group commander, Kevin Albright, said the SAS troops were acting as forward air controllers and taking part in low-flying, night search and rescue training. "They're helping our controllers find the right targets and work the communications back and forth." The regiment's historian, Professor David Horner, said SAS operations traditionally involved reconnaissance patrols inside enemy lines, gathering intelligence and directing air strikes. Captain Albright said the training runs involved dropping practice bombs from fighter jets that have seen service over Afghanistan and Iraq. "They do a dry run first, acquaint themselves with the target area, make sure their procedures are correct, make sure they can see the target that the forward air controller is talking about. "We do usually two or three practice runs where we drop 25-pound (11 kilogram) practice bombs." Captain Albright said the SAS had been practising night-vision search and rescue missions with his helicopter crews. "They're doing low-level flying, practising those skills, so this is an opportunity for them as well." The Abraham Lincoln is due to leave Fremantle tomorrow, but the crew has not been told where they are going. The carrier group could use the coast off WA as a staging area before steaming to the Middle East. "It'll be one of three things. We'll go back to the Middle East, we'll stay in the 7th fleet in the operating area in the Pacific or we'll go home," Captain Albright said. http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,5856928%255E662,00 .html

Lehmann: Don't call me racist By JON PIERIK 19jan03 DARREN Lehmann denied he was a racist last night after being found guilty of racial abuse and banned for five one-day internationals. The Australian middle-order batsman and South Australian captain is the first person to be suspended by the International Cricket Council for racial abuse. Lehmann was found guilty and banned by match referee Clive Lloyd for an outburst after his dismissal against Sri Lanka in Brisbane on Wednesday. He had admitted shouting the words "black c" as he walked into the Australian dressing room after being run out in Australia's victory over the tourists. A contrite Lehmann apologised again yesterday after the three-hour closed hearing in Adelaide. "I meant no offence by my comments and again would like to apologise for making them," he said. "I accept the penalty handed down and would like to say once again how regretful I am that the incident took place. "I would like to thank the Sri Lankan team for their support and understanding in this matter." Members of the Sri Lankan squad had overheard Lehmann's slur and immediately complained to Lloyd. The South Australian was charged with a level three offence, which carries a sentence of two to four Tests and four to eight one-day internationals. Lehmann and his solicitor, Greg Griffin, had asked for the minimum suspension of four one-day matches. Mr Griffin brought up Lehmann's impeccable record, the fact that his slur was not aimed at an individual and that Sri Lankan coach Dav Whatmore had praised him as a person and cricketer at the hearing. "Darren is not a racist, he does not have a racist bone in his body," Mr Griffin said. "He's very disappointed, but he was very gratified by the testimony and support he received from the Sri Lankans. "But it doesn't lessen the fact that he feels quite devastated by the result of the suspension. "This was an unfortunate outburst for which he has paid a very high price." Depending on how Australia fares in the VB Tri-series finals, Lehmann, 32, could be unavailable for Australia's first World Cup match against Pakistan in South Africa next month. He will miss Tri-series matches against England in Adelaide today, against Sri Lanka in Melbourne on Tuesday and the best-of-three finals series starting in Sydney on Thursday. Lloyd said: "In my decision, I took into consideration Darren's impeccable record and other matters put to me about his standing and reputation in cricket. He has apologised for his remarks. "Darren's comment could be interpreted as deeply offensive and I do not think we can condone such things in sport or in life." Lloyd said he hoped the suspension served as a warning to all players. Lloyd said he had warned all three teams before the VB Tri-series began that bad behaviour could harm their World Cup prospects. "But he (Lehmann) still has a chance of playing there and playing a very major role," Lloyd said. Players union chief Tim May said the ICC could have handled the matter better. "We have got some concerns about the lead-up which basically gets down to a casual hearing and also some public comments made by ICC officers," he said. "That's something I would like to privately address with the ICC to ensure the process can be as clean as possible in the future." http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,5856925%255E662,00 .html

"We have nuclear weapons"
How not to use a mirror "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)" This biblical phrase is carved on the portal of the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters located in Langley, Virginia, in the United States. The Book of John contains the story of Jesus Christ performing a miracle by bringing a dead man back to life. The CIA seems to be telling its members to treat intelligence like the truth, because intelligence protects the life of the United States. A nation's intelligence activities consist of four branches: intelligence gathering, information analysis, undercover operation and anti-espionage. Researchers say being seduced by one's own "mirror image" is a key cause of intelligence failure. This refers to a phenomenon in which intelligence analysts are captured by their own way of thinking and fail to see the enemy as it is. The analyst's mentality is compared with that of Narcissus, a handsome youth in Greek mythology who was fascinated by his own appearance reflected on the surface of a pool of water. He drowns himself to gain freedom from self worship. In psychoanalysis, the infantile ego-forming period, from 6 months to 18 months after birth, is called the "mirror stage." Intelligence experts cite the 1973 surprise attack by Egypt-Syria forces on Israel as a prime example of intelligence failure, resulting from the mirror image phenomenon. At that time Israel concluded that Arab nations would not bring on a war they could not win. Right before the surprise attack, General Moshe Dyan was assured that "since Israel has the advantage in armed forces and Arab nations know this, they will not take hostile action." Actually Egypt's president, Anwar al Sadat, shared General Dyan's assessment. But the Egyptian leader concluded that a war was needed to correct the imbalance. The intelligence failure by Israel was due to the naive assumption that Mr. Sadat would be rational like Israel. Analyses are rife on North Korea's intention to announce its withdrawal from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. The majority of them seem to construe the North's intention as a ploy toward the United States for a guarantee of the North's security. Is this the mirror image effect, judging Pyeongyang on the basis of our own rationality? That one day North Korea may announce, "We have nuclear weapons" is horrible to contemplate. Police 'admit' killing website editor.
Russia: Police 'admit' killing website editor. Two police officers were quickly detained last week on suspicion of carrying out the contract murder of military web site editor Vladimir Sukhomlin, beaten to death with baseball bats Jan. 4. Two police lieutenants from the town of Balashikha outside Moscow, identified by the Izvestia newspaper by the names, Goncharov and Vorotnikov, were detained on 9 January. They were said to have told police they had received $1,150 to kill Sukhomlin. The suspects also reportedly named the person alleged to have paid them, the director of a St. Petersburg company. The death of Sukhomlin, 23, was a shock to his friends in Russia's Internet community, who knew him as Cliver, and to military experts. "He was killed by the criminal structure that our police have turned into," the his father, Moscow State University professor Vladimir Sukhomlin, told the Moscow Times. "And these are police officers, who are supposed to be protecting us. That's what's horrible. They are a criminal organisation." Moscow Times report.
The spy who was left out in the cold.
Muslim spy who infiltrated Bin Laden's terror network in London Interview by Jake Tapper The murder of a policeman and the discovery of a ricin factory are the latest evidence of al-Qaeda activity in Britain, so why then did we abandon Reda Hassaine, who infiltrated its London network? IM VERY HAPPY," Reda Hassaine said, a few minutes before almost breaking down in tears. His joy came from his role in gathering evidence against Abu Qatada, an extremist Muslim cleric said to be a key al-Qaeda figure, who had just been arrested in London. That was last October. Less than three months later, his usefulness compromised after he was told his cover had been blown, Hassaine has been dumped by his former handlers in the intelligence services and left out in the cold, an unprotected target for the Islamist extremists he once spied on. Hassaine, 41, is an Algerian Muslim who has infiltrated militant Islamist groups for the secret services in Algeria and France, for Scotland Yards Special Branch and for M15. He says that Abu Qatada and Abu Hamza, another London-based Islamist, raise money, encourage people to kill, claim assassinations. He knows because he has seen them at work. Hassaine has a sad face and a stammer that improves with each bottle of Chianti, though it is fast replaced by melancholy. He chain smokes as he describes his journey from up-and-coming Algerian reporter to down-on-his-luck London ex-spy. His story is a reminder that Muslims themselves have been the biggest victims of the rise of Islamist extremists. And its not difficult to discern the moral in his tale: that worldwide indifference to the horrors of Algeria in the 1990s helped pave Osama bin Ladens path to the World Trade Centre. Moreover, Hassaine suggests that the West has been and probably still is unprepared to fend off the Islamist threat. On September 11, I was happy in one way, he admits. He was, of course, horrified by the attacks, but for years Ive been trying to warn people about what the Islamists are doing. Now I know George Bush is with me. Now I know Tony Blair is with me. In the early 1990s, during Algerias brief flirtation with democracy, Hassaine was an official in the populist hotchpotch of opposition groups known as the Islamic Salvation Front, or FIS. He quit when he realised that the partys chosen path to power was a campaign of violence and murder. The policemen first. Then the journalists. They had lists of people to be killed, he says. More than 120 foreign citizens were murdered. A car bomb was driven into the national police headquarters in 1995, killing 42 and wounding 265. Entire villages were massacred. Human rights organisations estimate that up to 100,000 Algerians have been killed since 1992. They started to kill everyone, says Hassaine. Kill, kill, as much as you can. How can I explain this to Westerners? These kind of people, they had been brainwashed in Afghanistan. When I left Algeria, people wanted to kill me. My closest friend, 35 of my colleagues, had been killed by Islamists. They were taking babies and putting them in ovens. Hassaine says the Wests mistake was to view such atrocities as an internal matter for Algeria. In fact, the extremists behind them were already feeding Osama bin Ladens al-Qaeda network. In 1994, Hassaine and his family fled to London. I was not going to let my baby get put in an oven, he says. He was able to leave only by making a deal with the Algerian security services to help them spy on Islamic extremists. Then in 1998, as France prepared to host the World Cup, its law enforcement agencies anticipated terrorist violence. A man from the French Embassy in London, whom Hassaine knew only as Jerome, recruited him to obtain information about any possible attacks. They were giving me the chance to get revenge, Hassaine says. A bin Ladenist newspaper was set up, with Hassaine as editor. People knew me as a journalist in Algeria, so it was a nice cover. He began providing the French with as much information as he could glean from days and nights spent praying, eating, talking with various extremists. When the French didnt come through with an offer of citizenship, Hassaine volunteered to help the British. In 1999, Special Branch asked him to infiltrate the now notorious Finsbury Park mosque in North London, where the imam, Abu Hamza, preached jihad to the likes of the shoebomber Richard Reid. Hassaine was already familiar with Abu Hamza and his ally Abu Qatada both of them among the top supporters in London of Islamic extremists in Algeria. He held them responsible in no small way for what had happened in his home country. According to the BBC, Abu Qatada has circulated a pamphlet revelling in the murders of Algerian policemen, while Abu Hamza once issued a fatwa urging the assassination of various Middle Eastern public figures as well as a two-year-old Algerian child.
