Nice explanatory picture at...
http://www.pcquest.com/content/technology/101081001.asp

The (over-a-year-old) article also states:
"The downside is that you cant make out whether the plane is a spy plane
or not.

"However various companies are working on making it viable for detecting
stealth aircraft. For instance, Roke Manor Research (www.roke.co.uk),
UK-based has developed sensor technologies which can work with cellphone
base stations to detect stealth aircraft."

Detecting moving objects is one (simple) thing. Tracking them while
identifying the type of object (stealth plane vs civilian, motorbike vs
car, etc) is a different issue, naturally.
What kind of resolution can be obtained from a few hundred meters (say,
for mass-public-monitoring-services) if grounded base stations can make
out high-altitude aircraft?

Further, are there any known defenses against this kind of passive
technology yet? Solitary surveillance aircrafts would surely have a harder
time achieving countermeasures than a person on a cellphone amongst a
crowd of bystanders. Intereference? Decoys?

One time pads

2002-10-16 Thread Sarad AV

hi,

An extract frm this months cryptogram goes as below.

On the other hand, if you ever find a product that
actually uses a one-time pad, it is almost certainly
unusable and/or insecure.
So, let me summarize. One-time pads are useless for
all but very specialized applications, primarily
historical and non-computer. And almost any system
that uses a one-time pad is insecure. It will claim
to use a one-time pad, but actually use a two-time pad
(oops). Or it will claims to use a one-time pad, but
actually use a steam cipher. Or it will use a
one-time pad, but won't deal with message
re-snchronization and re-transmission attacks. Or it
will ignore
message authentication, and be susceptible to
bit-flipping attacks and
the like. Or it will fall prey to keystream reuse
attacks. Etc.,
etc., etc.
-

Though it has a large key length greater than or equal
to the plain text, why would it be insecure if we can
use a good pseudo random number generators, store the
bits produced on a taper proof medium.

how about this way

P=Plain text
C=Cipher text
R=Pseudo random bits(the pad)

To transmit a secret frm point A to Point B

Choose ur agent-Send cipher text(C) to B.
If( Cipher text C is intercepted,do not send R.)

without R, C cannot be decrypted

Else(If C is securely transmitted to point B,choose an
agent and send R to point B)

If R is intercepted the secret remains safe, since they
donot have C.
If initially C was intercepted ,R is not send, another
pad is chosen.

It is assumed that the agent is trust worthy. Also the
agent has to send receipt
for the safe arrival of C at point B before R is
transmitted.
It is also assumed that cryptographical secure pseudo
random numbers are use.

Cryptography does not address the problem of dishonest
users-does it?

The difficulty for attaining highest security is more.

why do we always have to rely on the internet for
sending the pad?If it is physically carried to the
receiver we can say for sure if P or R is intercepted.

can some one answer the issues involved that one time
pads is not a good choice.
Thank you

Regards Sarath.

Amazing Track Record: Up 100.38% in the Last 160 Days!

2002-10-16 Thread Adam Oliensis
Title: Special Offer

  Dear Ralph,
It's been 160 days
since I launched my new online advisory, The Agile Trader,
and things are going great. I've made 74 simple-to-follow buy and
sell recommendations, and the net result has been a 100.38% profit.
Imagine a 100.38% gain in a crazy up and down market like this!
Recently I was
watching a CNBC market wrap-up show that featured an interview with
a famous "money management reporter." This big name reporter was
only too eager to tell tuned-in investors that they shouldn't look
to make 20% to 30% on their money a year. "Those days are behind
us for now, and investors should be happy with 4% to 6% a year!"

Hogwash! Don't settle for
  tiny profits or even losses...
Although The
Agile Trader is new, I'm not new to generating huge profits.
I've already shown thousands of investors like you I can deliver
big profits on a steady basis. My track record speaks for itself
and proves that those idiots on CNBC are hopelessly misinformed.
Before launching The Agile Trader I edited a similar
advisory for another financial publisher. Contract limitations don't
allow me to tell you the name of that publication, but I can tell
you that during the five months in which I edited that letter, my
trading recommendations were up 114% and were annualizing over
  273%.
Most of the "experts"
on Wall Street may not want to believe that kind of track record
can exist, but the TRUTH is: Following my advice would have delivered
you a 100.38% profit over the last 160 days!
Wall Street's "experts" don't

care about you -- I do!
If you want to
play it safe and will settle for 4% on your money, don't subscribe
to The Agile Trader. I'm only interested in investors
who want to really make money. Look, the profits I've generated
are not flukes. The Agile Trader has become a money
machine. While most of the gang on Wall Street is whimpering and
moaning about the topsy-turvy market I've been celebrating one great
trade after another. My subscribers are swimming in profits. Now
it's your turn. I don't want you to miss a single trade. So here's
a special charter subscription offer that makes signing up very
  easy...
No risk! The first 30 days are
  FREE!
I don't want there
to be a single doubt in your mind about subscribing to my new investment
advisory, so I'm going to give you the first 30 days FREE. Don't
take a single recommendation; instead just follow what I recommend
and see how well I do. You'll be very impressed!
Sign up today
and become a subscriber to The Agile Trader and you'll
  immediately start receiving...

  My market
updates three times a week via e-mail. I'll keep you completely
updated on my buy and sell recommendations. I'll never leave you
hanging, and I'll always keep you fully informed on my market
strategy and exactly what I'm thinking.

  My urgent
buy and sell recommendations via e-mail as they occur. I always
give explicit trading instructions in my updates, but when something
crucial happens intraday, I have the technology to reach you instantly.
I can get information from my desktop computer to yours in a matter
of seconds, so you'll NEVER miss a trade.

  iShare trading:
Besides giving you buy and sell recommendations on individual
stocks, I'm also going to give you a revolutionary new service
that specifically trades iShares and Exchange Traded Funds. I've
set up my trading workstations to screen and sort these new trading
vehicles that allow you to invest in entire sectors, indices,
and even emerging markets. I think you'll be blown away. I've
even got some specific hedging strategies, including going long
and going short specific baskets of these iShares.

Re: One time pads

2002-10-16 Thread David E. Weekly

Naive question here, but what if you made multiple one time pads (XORing
them all together to get your "true key") and then sent the different pads
via different mechanisms (one via FedEx, one via secure courier, one via
your best friend)? Unless *all* were compromised, the combined key would
still be secure.

As for PKI being secure for 20,000 years, it sure as hell won't be if those
million-qubit prototypes turn out to be worth their salt. Think more like
5-10 years. In fact, just about everything except for OTP solutions will be
totally, totally fucked. Which means that you should start thinking about
using OTP *now* if you have secrets you'd like to keep past when an
adversary of yours might have access to a quantum computer. I'd put 50 years
as an upper bound on that, 5 years as a lower.

Not quite right. My understanding is that quantum
computing can effectively halve the length of a
symmettric key, but that does not take it down to zero.

Thus, a 256 bit key would, in a QC world, be as secure
as a 128 bit key today, which is to say, pretty good.

It's the asymmetric algorithms which have problems.

Prepaid Online shopping

The innovative solution provides an attractive alternative to electronic

The new solution, known as "Ticket Surf", consists of a scratch card with a
password for online transactions. To use the card people simply enter the
password on a participating partner site and click. They can then select
their purchase and pay immediately. The card password is checked on the
Ticket Surf platform to approve the transaction and debit the corresponding
amount. Once the credit has been exhausted the card is disposed of.

Volunteer customers who signed up for the trial received a 15-euro card that
they use via a special France Telecom portal until November 30. The first
Ticket Surf service available is sending SMS (Short Message Service)
messages via the Web to cellphones.

"By providing this extremely flexible means of payment France Telecom aims
to energize the e-commerce market. This is an excellent lever to multiply
the volume of online transactions. A significant number of content providers
are very interested in the concept and we're already looking at the
development of combined prepaid Internet services and phone cards," says
Gilles Moro, project manager at France Telecom R&D.

However, I am not. I am a human being, and value the lives of

snagging dissidents with the no-fly list

2002-10-16 Thread Major Variola (ret)

McCarthyism Watch

We will be regularly updating the site with examples of
the New McCarthyism that is
sweeping the country.

October 16, 2002

More Anti-War Activists Snagged by "No Fly" List

The No Fly list is still up and running. The FBI and the
Transportation Security
Administration have a list of suspicious people they
distribute to the airlines, and the
airlines check the names of their passengers against
this list. The existence of the list was
first reported here on this web site and then in the
June issue of The Progressive, after a
group of peace activists were detained in Milwaukee on
April 19.

On August 7, two more peace activists found themselves
on the list. Rebecca Gordon
and Jan Adams were detained by San Francisco police at
the airport there, reported
Alan Gathright of The San Francisco Chronicle on
September 27.

Gordon and Adams, veteran peace and justice activists in
the Bay Area, work on a
newspaper called War Times (war-times.org).

"We get to the airport at 9:30 in the evening for an
11:30 flight to Boston on ATA,"
Gordon tells The Progressive. "As we go to the check-in
counter to check in our
baggage, the woman takes our IDs and types in our names,
and then says, 'There's
something wrong with my computer.' So she goes and gets
another woman, who types
our names into her computer. She, too, says, 'There's
something wrong with my
computer. Please step aside so we can check the other
people in.' "

Gordon says she and Adams thought there might be a
problem with their e-tickets. But it
was more serious than that, as they found out a few
minutes later when one of the airline
employees told them, "You both turned up on the FBI No
Fly list, and we've called the
San Francisco police. They are coming over to talk to
you. In the meantime, one of us
has to stay with you, so please come along with your
baggage," Gordon recalls.

Gordon says the woman from the airlines seemed
bewildered. "We were standing there
in the middle of the airport, and I'm sure she's
thinking these are just garden-variety
middle-aged white dykes," Gordon says.

"I can't imagine why this is happening," the airline
employee said, according to Gordon.

"And I said, 'Well, I can tell you why. We work on a
paper that opposes the war on
terrorism.' Her eyes got kind of big, and she said,
'Oh.' "

Gordon says three uniformed members of the police then
came, took their IDs, and
called headquarters. They wouldn't let her even get a
drink of water.

"After ten or fifteen more minutes, one of the officers
told us, 'You aren't on the master
list,' and they handed us back to the airline, Gordon
says.

But the airline was still suspicious, and circled a big
S on their boarding passes. "I assume
it means search, and then a red S was put on it," Gordon
adds. "In fact, at the gate we
were selected for search and they did the usual search
procedure, the wanding and the
shoes.

Before I got on, I asked the ticket agent if this is
going to happen every time. She said, 'I
don't know, but I'd recommend that you get to the
airport early.' "

For its part, the San Francisco police has little
comment.

"We had no report of any of our officers stopping them,"
says Larry Ratti, a
spokesperson for the police at the airport.

"Whenever anyone comes up on the No Fly list, we come
out in one or two minutes and
the situation is cleared up. Generally, they would make
a police report if they detained
people for any length of time."

Ratti says the department gets calls about suspicious
people at the airport "maybe one a
day, one every two days." Some of these calls come from
the No Fly list, "but we don't
differentiate," he says. "It's just a
suspicious-type-person call."

I ask Gordon what conclusion she draws from this
experience.

"This is harassment," she says. "It's to let us know
that they've got their eye on us."

Adams agrees. "Nothing felt very threatening in the
episode--except that they are doing
it," she says. Adams adds that she was singled out for
searching on her return trip from
Boston, as well.

This is a favourite bipedal pastime. We all support it. It's good and fills one
with joy and satisfaction.

Major tournaments are called "wars" and we hardly can wait for the next big
one.

Lower castes and serfs are brainwashed to refrain from it; it's the sport only
for nobility (and wide-spread games would ruin the profits.)

Therefore your failure to understand is understandable.

Yeah. What we have to do for that is start thinking about ways
to apply Kerberos and similar technologies to real-world problems
besides the inside-an-organization ones they were originally designed for.

OTPs won't help a bit for that problem.
They're fine for transmitting new data if you've already sent a pad,
but they're useless for storing secrets, because you can only decrypt
something if you've got the pad around, and you have to burn the pad after
use.
Storing the encrypted secret message on your regular computers
while keeping the pad locked up in the safe is unlikely to be
any more convenient than keeping the plaintext locked up in the safe.
I suppose you could secret-share a one-time-pad,
but you could just as easily secret-share the secret message.

Re: One time pads

2002-10-16 Thread Sam Ritchie

ACTUALLY, quantum computing does more than just halve the effective key
length. With classical computing, the resources required to attack a given
key grow exponentially with key length. (a 128-bit key has 2^128
possibilities, 129 has 2^129, etc. etc. you all know this...)
With quantum computing, however, the complexity of an attack grows only
polynomially. Hence a MUCH MUCH more agreeable time frame for brute force
attacks. Good stuff, eh?

Yes, sorry -- I should have clarified as "you should start thinking about
encrypting data transmissions using OTP *now* if you'd like to send secrets
you'd like to keep..." -- destroying both pads after transmission should be
obvious. I wasn't attempting to address secure data storage.

Don Simpson is famous for a lot of stuff,he sounds like an honoury

One of his tricks was (I think) to write two memo's about a script moving

Depending on box office, one or the other would be destroyed.
It looks very much like the dry drunk is putting this concept into wider

PC sound cards, which all sample below 100 kHz, are only adequate for
processing narrow band signals. Too bad most ofthe really interesting
radio apps require MHz of bandwidth. See
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuradio/gnuradio.html for a Linux based SDR
which support both narrow and wideband processing.
