Bullshit Tim. The card holder (person paying) has an interest rate tacked
on their payments -EVERY MONTH-. It's right there at the bottem of your
statement.

Now, let's talk about the 1-3% transaction charge and who -actually- pays
it. How do you explain 'cash discounts'? I'll tell you how chucklehead,
the individual vendors crank their prices up 2-5% to compensate. Why?
Because -most- people use credit cards even for small purchases like soft
drinks and hamburgers.

Now this segues right into that oft repeated (and completely wrong I might
add) CACL statement about 'the payer pays everything'. What is wrong with
that statement? It violates a prime basic tenent of both economics and
game theory. What might that be?

Independence of transactions.

There -is- a distinction between individual -contests- and the -game- as a
whole (without even getting into iterated games). Something this view
completely breaks. It creates a reduction to absurdity and eliminates the
ability to make distinctions in the market. Why?

Because it reduces the market to a single player, payers.

Poor economics and game theory. You'd think you'd know better.

More of of the CACL 'payer pays it all'...

No, that is -not- where the cost of the bricks, mortar, and such come
from. Where they -do- come from is the alternation of each agent in a
market from buyer to seller. It is this dynamic and the potential for
profit (which long term causes inflation) that drives economics.

Each transaction -must- stand on its own two feet, otherwise the concept
of 'market' and 'voluntary exchnage' go by the wayside.

Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Tue, 30 Apr 2002 12:07:55 +0200

Hello!

The GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG) is GNU's tool for secure communication
and data storage. It is a complete and free replacement of PGP and
can be used to encrypt data and to create digital signatures. It
includes an advanced key management facility and is compliant with the
proposed OpenPGP Internet standard as described in RFC2440. This new
release has a lot of features beyond OpenPGP which will be included in
a soon to be published RFC2440 successor.

Version 1.0.7 has been released yesterday and is available at most
mirrors (see below) now. If you can't get it from a mirror, use the
primary location:

  ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gnupg/gnupg-1.0.7.tar.gz (2.3MB)
  ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gnupg/gnupg-1.0.7.tar.gz.sig

Due to some new translations and the work we did over the last 11
months, the diff against 1.0.6 is somewhat large:

  ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gnupg/gnupg-1.0.6-1.0.7.diff.gz (1.3MB)

MD5 checksums of the above files are:

  d8b36d4dfd213a1a1027b1877acbc897 gnupg-1.0.7.tar.gz
  99d92e0658972b42868d7564264797ad gnupg-1.0.6-1.0.7.diff.gz

Some new things in this version:

* Secret keys are now stored and exported in a new format which
uses SHA-1 for integrity checks. This format renders the
Rosa/Klima attack useless. Other OpenPGP implementations might
not yet support this, so the option --simple-sk-checksum creates
  the old vulnerable format.

* The default cipher algorithm for encryption is now CAST5,
default hash algorithm is SHA-1. This will give us better
  interoperability with other OpenPGP implementations.

* Symmetric encrypted messages now use a fixed file size if
possible. This is a tradeoff: it breaks PGP 5, but fixes PGP 2,
6, and 7. Note this was only an issue with RFC-1991 style
  symmetric messages.

* Photographic user ID support. This uses an external program to
  view the images.

* Enhanced keyserver support via keyserver "plugins". GnuPG comes
with plugins for the NAI LDAP keyserver as well as the HKP email
keyserver. It retains internal support for the HKP HTTP
  keyserver.

* Nonrevocable signatures are now supported. If a user signs a
key nonrevocably, this signature cannot be taken back so be
  careful!

* Multiple signature classes are usable when signing a key to
specify how carefully the key information (fingerprint, photo
  ID, etc) was checked.

* --pgp2 mode automatically sets all necessary options to ensure
that the resulting message will be usable by a user of PGP 2.x.

* --pgp6 mode automatically sets all necessary options to ensure
that the resulting message will be usable by a user of PGP 6.x.

* Signatures may now be given an expiration date. When signing a
key with an expiration date, the user is prompted whether they
want their signature to expire at the same time.

* Revocation keys (designated revokers) are now supported if
present. There is currently no way to designate new keys as
  designated revokers.

* Permissions on the .gnupg directory and its files are checked
  for safety.

* --expert mode enables certain silly things such as signing a
revoked user id, expired key, or revoked key.

* Some fixes to build cleanly under Cygwin32.

* New tool gpgsplit to split OpenPGP data formats into packets.

* New option --preserve-permissions.

* Subkeys created in the future are not used for encryption or
signing unless the new option --ignore-valid-from is used.

* Revoked user-IDs are not listed unless signatures are listed too
or we are in verbose mode.

* There is no default comment string with ascii armors anymore
except for revocation certificates and --enarmor mode.

* The command "primary" in the edit menu can be used to change the
primary UID, "setpref" and "updpref" can be used to change the
  preferences.

* Fixed the preference handling; since 1.0.5 they were erroneously
matched against against the latest user ID and not the given one.

* RSA key generation.

* Merged Stefan's patches for RISC OS in. See comments in
  scripts/build-riscos.

* It is now possible to sign and conventional encrypt a message (-cs).

* The MDC feature flag is supported and can b

Actually it does. It actually means that for that cash transaction you're
paying for a credit card transaction (-most- consumers pay with a card so
the merchant incurs the handling fee) you -didn't use-. You gave away
-free- money.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha hasome master economist crypto anarchist.

Where do you think those 'cash discounts' come from? They subtract the
credit handling charge! Imagine that. Works great when a cagely merchant
recognizes a trend in his local clientelle away from credit purchases.

A credit card does one thing, it lets you borrow somebody elses money at
interest so you can buy stuff now that you'd normally have to wait on.
It's a very conventient, portable, timely loan agent. Time <> Money.

I would switch to a better card provider then if I were you - here in
the UK, that interest payment only kicks in if you don't clear the
balance when making your payment - ie it is the cost of the *loan* they
are providing you not the cost of the purchase (if nothing else, if it
were the cost of the purchase then it would be a one-shot rather than
ongoing cost)

> Now, let's talk about the 1-3% transaction charge and who

Indeed so - and in the UK, the CC "merchant account" provider *will*
yank your account if you do that and they catch you. obviously, the big
players wouldn't have this happen to them - but then, the big players
won't give you a cash discount as a policy either (although individual
branch managers often will)
However, the fact that many merchants choose to "work around" the
restriction if the customer pushes for a discount, does not alter the
fact that
a) the 1-3% is SUBTRACTED from the payment they receive, not ADDED to
the bill of the customer
b) the CC companies frown on even a HINT that a CC is more expensive for
the customer than cash, and have enough tame lawyers to make it very
expensive for any merchants they catch doing it.

> Independence of transactions.
There is no such thing, outside of very theoretical models. every time
you are offered a bundle deal, a loyalty card, a special discount -
anything - you break the model. Item pricing will commonly vary based on
a lot of factors - the customer-merchant relationship, the quantity of
stock, expected value of stock, recent sales, and of course the true
value of the offered payment. However, it is a convenient fiction, as
almost all of the transactions will go ahead at the offered price;
usually, anything but a tiny retailler (or a medium sized one offered a
big transaction) will refuse to treat - either you take the offered
price or you don't. Enough choose "don't" though, and the price will
drop, which of course is in itself a negotiation of sorts.

Still more steganography tools.

2002-05-20 Thread Peter Wayner

To help flog the second edition of Disappearing Cryptography and
encourage a general education in things steganographic, I'm
continuing to roll out Java applets on the book's website.

This week I've added a few new features to last week's applet that
let you hide information in the noise of an image. That is, replace
the least significant bits of an image with either an ASCII text
message or random data. You can replace anywhere between 1 to all 8
of the image's bit plane. I think it's amazing how much you can stuff
in an image before it starts to degrade.

The new features allow you to examine the least significant bits of
an image. One option will delete the seven most significant bit
planes and keep only the least. Another option lets you compare the
most significant with the least, although it depends a great deal on
the image.

This experiment has its problems. Video cards don't always offer
enough precision. You'll get more consistent results if you use a
higher setting on your video card. The JPEG images don't have enough
resolution. Also, this system relies upon 24-bit color, a file format
that's rarely found in nature. More sophisticated systems can target
compressed images.

Try it here:

http://www.wayner.org/books/discrypt2/bitlevel.php

You can try earlier applets like this one for hiding information in
the order of a list of items:

   http://www.wayner.org/books/discrypt2/sorted.php

Or this one for hiding in the voice over to a baseball game:

   http://www.wayner.org/texts/mimic/

Source code protected by the GPL available for all of these. Just ask.

Databases, for people who must guard sensitive information in their
database:

This might help...

2002-05-20 Thread webmaster0617c68

Hi,

I'm also an online business owner and I'm interested in building strong
business relationships. This internet is such a jungle, sometimes a good
tip can really help.

I remember how it feels to continually pay for advertising my website
and to always be in lack of traffic unless I would get more money out
of my pocket again and again.

I felt like that untill the day I discovered a great resource. It explained
to me how to get my traffic for free. Not the regular methods we see
everywhere. Tactics that worked for me immediately. It made all the
difference for my website. Since then, I'm experiencing great results
without paying a dime in advertising.

If you would be interested to know where I got that information, simply
click on the following email address (send a blank message). I'll be happy
to send you the link.

mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Respectfully Yours,

Matthew
