Using mutt to sendmail via remote SMTP

2008-08-03 Thread Bayu Adiwibowo
I using thunderbird to send this mail, recently i found that I can run
cygwin with my USB, so I wonder how to use cygwin MUA like mutt to
sending mail via gmail. As far in my research mutt look for sendmail
program in exim or other smtp program running in localhost to sending
mail, and this is not suite to my purpose.
Maybe anyone in this list can point me a way to make mutt sending mail
with remote SMTP server?

What does your "/var/log/fetchmail.log" say?
Probably a permission problem.

Yes, that's the way mutt works. mutt still uses the distinction between
MUA (mail user agent, that is, mutt itself) and MTA (mail transfer
agent, that is, something like sendmail, exim, and-so-on).

> Maybe anyone in this list can point me a way to make mutt sending mail

You need to install an MtA like sendmail, exim, postfix, or similar. You
may, however, use a very simple one like ssmtp (it is available with
cygwin). This might be your easiest solution.

   Spiro.

bash shell interface broken after install on Vista

2008-08-03 Thread Barry Gold
I installed cygwin on my new HP Pavilion machine running (ecch!) Vista.
I added a few items to the default install parameters (notably vim and
file), then started my download.

It got "stuck" about 80% through -- sat at 80% for over an hour.

I cancelled the install, and tried again with a different mirror. This
time it got stuck at about 32%.

I tried yet another mirror and finally got a supposedly complete
install. Then I started up a bash shell in a command window (using the
Cygwin shortcut).

I observe the following two symptoms:

1. Nearly all commands appear to complete without doing anything. This
includes "ls", "cat", "vi".

The following commands work properly:
 echo
 true
 false ($? == 1)
dirs
 if...then.fi
 test

2. exit doesn't exit. Instead, I get the following message:
4 [main] bash 1576 fork: child -1 - died waiting for longjmp
before initialization, retry 10, exit code 0x100, errno 11

My question is - is there some way to work around this?

For example, running bash as the login shell, and then running cmd.exe, does not fix the

Basically you need to set the env var CYGWIN to contain 'tty', if you already
have
something in CYGWIN, you might want to use:
(export CYGWIN="tty $CYGWIN"; cygstart bash.exe)...

You could set the env-var in a .bat file which then launches cygwin?

You can make the 'tty' setting permanently part of your CYGWIN var by adding
it to your windows environment (system properties, advanced,
Environ vars; user...)

That I can address: they are shell builtins. That is, they are
recognized by bash and processed by the bash program itself without
forking or otherwise involving another process. I find it hard to
imagine that anything in bash could work if those commands didn't.

Since you just installed Cygwin and didn't configure it much, have you
considered just uninstalling and reinstalling from a new mirror?

DESCRIPTION:

Speex is an Open Source/Free Software patent-free audio compression
format designed for speech. The Speex Project aims to lower the
barrier of entry for voice applications by providing a free

UTF-8 Terminal - How to?

2008-08-03 Thread Jerry DeLisle

Hi folks,

I am implementing UTF-8 encoding capability for gfortran. I can test fine on
linux platforms because the gnome-terminal has UTF-8 capability built in.

How can I achieve similar capability in a Cygwin terminal so that I can test the
gfortran Cygwin build? The gfortran library code paths are different on Cygwin
because of things like CR-LF line ends, so I really should test it.

Good suggestions welcome.

The mirror checking software runs four times a day to weed out bad
mirrors. It's very unlikely that a new installation would have problems
that were due to a mirror. It is possible that using an old mirror that
is no longer on the list would cause problems but that wouldn't be the
case with a new installation.

Commands which exit silently are usually caused by missing DLLs.
"cygcheck /bin/ls.exe" would tell you which DLL was missing and you could
install the missing packages.

Sorry but this is bad advice. There is no reason to use CYGWIN=tty unless
you have a clear need for it. Using CYGWIN=tty means that some non-cygwin
programs will operate incorrectly so I wouldn't suggest this technique for
a casual or first time user.

That's a good first step but if you don't have luck, you may need to
uninstall it. For more info, see the email archives on BLODA.

The mirror checking software runs four times a day to weed out bad

problems that were due to a mirror.

The original problem report mentioned it hanging during the download
or install, I forget which. I wondered whether it might have been
some odd networking problem with that particular mirror. (I've had
odd networking problems in the past, even in Linux.) It's also an
obvious fix technique, if it works, but he later said it didn't.

The problem seems to be that it can't run under the shell, because the

I ran it in a command window.

The hang is most likely during the postinstall phase, because some BLODA
is preventing the postinstall scripts from running. No postinstall = no
/etc/profile, which means PATH doesn't get set to include /bin, which
means normal commands don't work and only shell builtins function. No
postinstall/profile also means /bin/bash doesn't get copied to /bin/sh
which means any script with a #!/bin/sh fails to run also.

I doubt this would be a big issue but if you find something there, then
report it. I'd still recommend going for the install for all and if
necessary, installing as administrator to facilitate that as necessary.
FWIW, this is always an option when installing, just like whether you
want UNIX or DOS (shudder) files.

I hate Vista. And I'm not too fond of HP either, right now.

But I should note that I had no problems with cygwin on my previous
(Win2K) machine, which also ran NAV and lots of other potentially dodgy

Right. Depends on the version of the dodgy app many times. What's
clear from the above is that something is getting in the way of your
post install. As Brian said in another message in this thread, if
they don't run, you don't get allot of bootstrapping done that adds
things like '/bin' to your path and sets up profile files, passwd
and group files, and the like. So if you can't force this through
with 'setup.exe' in some way, you can go looking in '/etc/setup'
for the postinstall scripts to see which have run and which haven't.
But I'd stick it out with 'setup.exe' for the moment until you can't
get any further with it. It can be a bit of a pain to do what 'setup.exe'
does manually, though if nothing else works, it can be a god-send (or
at least help clarify any issues).

The difference is because the 387 in the main thread has its rounding
mode set to extended precision, whereas in the threads it's set to
double precision. Cygwin sets the control word to extended precision in
its crt startup code; apparently the Windows default for new threads is
double precision and it's not explicitly set by Cygwin in
pthread::thread_init_wrapper. Arguably it should set it there too for
consistency.

But the results are the same to 15 significant digits which is all you
can expect out of an IEEE double, so this is technically correct. The
excess precision issue with 387 math is well known, see gcc PR323.

If your architecture supports sse2 then you can use that instead of the
387 unit with -fpmath=sse2 (in conjunction with the relevant -march= of
course, or -msse2). The sse2 unit always does double calculations in
double precision, there is no extended mode, so this is not an issue.

You could also set the 387 control word yourself at your thread's start
function.

But only within the C:\Users\\ folder. The Icalcs of the

vista is interpretting files with identical cacls differently
depending on where they are in the tree.
