  Two things:

1. http://cygwin.com/acronyms#PPIOSPE. Redirected to mailing list.

2. http://cygwin.com/faq/faq.setup.html#faq.setup.what-packages

  As you surmised way back at the start of the thread, make isn't part of the
default selection, you'll need to rerun setup.exe and select it in the package
chooser.

The messages you are receiving ("No Remote Directory.", "Permission denied.")
point out a problem with the user's HOME directory.

It would be better if you specify the steps you used for testing:

- Did you create /etc/passwd and /etc/group on the server;
- Are they local users or domain users;
- Have you tried rlogin?
- Do you get the server's welcome message and prompt for a passwd (if not then
check `which rsh` you are using -- Windows has it's own rsh command).

Rene,

Both of those files were created on the server, in the correct directory. The
users are domain users. Rlogin works through Cygwin, and it prompted me for
the password. Rsh still does not work though.

And to all those condemning me for using rsh, I'm sorry, I'm only an intern and
I do what I'm told (I tried getting them to switch to ssh, but they wouldn't).

For example:

   M-x compile
   make mchps95.gfc clean

in which 'mchps95.gfc' is a F95 application linking with a Cernlib build
made with an old version of GFortran: this cause about 2000 link errors.

Beside this, I observe other core dumps, also starting (always from X)

It is not simple to give details, often the failures are at random.

They are very simple and standard (from the build script):

LDFLAGS='-Wl,--enable-auto-import -Wl,--enable-auto-image-base' \
../configure --prefix=${prefix_dir} || return 1

make LD='$(CC)' || return 1

make LD='$(CC)' install prefix=${dest_dir}/${prefix_dir_name} \
 || return 1

cd ${dest_dir}

find ${prefix_dir_name} \! -type d | \
   tar cjfT ${base_dir}/emacs-${rel}.${build}.tar.bz2 -

where ${prefix_dir} is /usr/local/emacs and I install the final package in
this way:

   tar -xjf emacs-${rel}.${build}.tar.bz2 -C /

Compiling a Linux kernel using Cygwin

2007-07-27 Thread Claudio Scordino

Hi all,

  I have to compile a Linux kernel using Cygwin on Windows XP (I know, it's a
very silly thing, but it does not depend on me, unfortunately...).

I already have a gcc cross-compile toolchain for my target (arm) installed on
Windows.

I already installed gcc-core, gcc-g++, binutils, cpio, make, patch, tar, vim,
gettext, libintl and libncurses on cygwin (do I need something else?).

Since I assume that I need symbolic links, I use an ext2 filesystem on a USB
PenDrive, using the ext2fsd driver for Windows.

However, I'm receiving a lot of errors, everywhere.

Some of them:

1) Sometimes when compiling, I receive the error "cannot mv file A to B: invalid
request code".

However, the system allows me to manually copy file A on B and then remove file
A (which is almost the same thing, so I wonder why the mv command does not work).

2) I'm not able of doing a "make menuconfig" even using the host gcc.

The system does not find ncurses libraries. But I've installed them!

Does anybody know how to solve these problems ?

More general question: did anybody build succesfully a Linux kernel under
cygwin?

Any hel and suggestion is very welcome.

Many thanks in advance,

  Claudio

After contacting our email administrator, we found that the rejected

Can the list server be configured to remove or obfuscate the

Hi,
I am new here, I just wonder if someone can help me to access a remote sshd
server with a client machine installed with Putty?
The remote server I tested is in the same lab. Since many people in this lab
need to use this super computer, I try to install a cygwin sshd server on
the super computer to make it a server.
 A: I have already done this part. When I typed “net start sshd”, it starts
and “ssh localhost”, it asked me the password. After I gave it password, it
said the connection has been established successfully.
  I followed the exact the step described by this link:
http://pigtail.net/LRP/printsrv/cygwin-sshd.html. It included these steps
 mkpasswd   -cl   >   /etc/passwd
 mkgroup   --local>   /etc/group

B: I installed putty on another machine in the same lab, and tried to

accessed this super computer. I never succeed.
I inputted IP address of the super computer and keep all of the rest
parameters default.
It always said timeout. Never log on the server.

Both super computer and putty are installed under windows XP professional.

You probably need to open port 22 in the WinXP firewall.

RE: Compiling a Linux kernel using Cygwin

2007-07-27 Thread Bob McConnell
Cross compiling on Cygwin is not foolish at all. I have two commercial
SDKs set up that way and know of more than a few other people doing just
that. I target both ARM7 and Motorola CPUs. In both cases the SDK
installed on top of my existing Cygwin configuration and just worked.

But you might have some luck finding applicable help on the Digi support
forums . The Digi ConnectME and
related devices use the ARM7 and are available in configurations
optimized for Linux. Basically they put the CPU, RAM, flash Ethernet and
serial ports all in an RJ-45 connector shell. The original version used
Cygwin and GCC with the NetSilicon NetOS 6 kernel, but due to customer
demand they added options for Linux.

You will find the Linux support forums under Embedded Modules and
Microprocessors.

I'm going to assume that this is a Cygwin based toolchain. If this is
not the case, then you want to be talking about your build environment
with whoever built your toolchain, not the Cygwin mailing lists.

Did you install these using the Cygwin setup.exe, or did you get them
from some other source? If you try to mix and match, say, mingw or
Microsoft Services For Unix utilities with Cygwin, you're going to run
into problems.

> Since I assume that I need symbolic links, I use an ext2 filesystem on a USB

You shouldn't need to do this - Cygwin supports symbolic links just
fine.

I suspect this is a symptom of using the ext2fsd and the PenDrive. As I
mentioned, you shouldn't need to do this - Cygwin will handle symbolic
links perfectly well.

For cross-compiling a kernel, though, you may want to use a managed
mount; this will help you avoid some file name case-sensitivity issues
that crop up in the kernel source code (ex, the netfiler code uses file
names that differ only in case). Read up on managed mounts in the the
Cygwin FAQ:

  http://cygwin.com/faq/faq.using.html

Short instructions for using a managed mount

  1. Create a new, empty directory:
 $ mkdir -p /usr/src/kernel

  2. Mount it as a managed directory:
 $ mount -o managed c:/cygwin/usr/src/kernel /usr/src/kernel

  3. Change into the managed mount directory:
 $ cd /usr/src/kernel

  4. Extract the kernel source in the managed mount directory:
 $ tar -xzf

> 2) I'm not able of doing a "make menuconfig" even using the host gcc.

IIRC, you'll need to patch menuconfig to build properly under Cygwin...
though the problems that I can remember dealt with libintl, not with
ncurses.

What errors do you see when you do "make menuconfig"?

> Does anybody know how to solve these problems ?

Possibly :-) We will probably need a bit more information (as I've
asked for above) in order to help you, though.

> More general question: did anybody build succesfully a Linux kernel under

I used to work for a company (http://www.timesys.com) that did (and
still does) support cross-compiling Linux under Cygwin. So yes, it is
indeed possible - and, frankly, not all that difficult, either.

This is an invalid testcase in several ways.

It only "works" inasmuch as the compiler recognises that 7 is a constant
and replaces the call to sqrtl() with a value. Any nontrivial use of
sqrtl() however will result in a linker error, so this testcase is not
doing what you think it is.

Also, you didn't include math.h, which if combined with -Wall would have
given you an "implicit declaration of sqrtl" warning. As it is you're
relying on the fact that ancient C conventions allow for calling a
function without first seeing a definition or declaration for that
function, but in the modern age doing this is extremely bad because the
compiler has to guess as to the argument types.

how to build cygwin using itself

2007-07-27 Thread zooko

Folks:

I started by following these instructions:

http://cygwin.com/faq/faq.programming.html#faq.programming.building-
cygwin

Which say to check out "what you need" from CVS, linking to these
instructions:

http://cygwin.com/cvs.html

Which say to check out "winsup".

However, it turns out that if you just follow those instructions and
checkout "winsup" then you'll be a very perplexing error message
about __assert_func being undefined. This is because, as Brian
Dessent kindly explained to me, you also need to checkout newlib.

So I propose that the cvs.html page instruct people to checkout both
"winsup" and "newlib".

Unfortunately now that I have "winsup" and "newlib", then I get
another error:

---
In file included from /c/playground/cygwin/src/newlib/libc/include/
dirent.h:6,

 from ../../../../../src/newlib/libc/posix/execvp.c:9:
/c/playground/cygwin/src/newlib/libc/include/sys/dirent.h:10:2:
#error " not supported"

---

Could someone give me a hint as to what other steps are necessary to
build cygwin using itself?

Thanks!

Regards,

Zooko

the instruction of setting up sshd in cygwin is too vague

2007-07-27 Thread shiliang Wang
Thanks to let me know which instruction is correct one.
I got the trouble with the official instruction. I just wonder if you can
give me some help, I am new in this area?
My goal is establishing a vista or XP professional base sshd server in
laboratory so that everyone in the lab can use this computer to do data
analysis with ssd client application.
I thought the best thing is that everyone can work simultaneously and
interface in every client computer is easy to use such as windows system. I
even don't know if cygwin can realize this goal or not?
Yesterday, I tried the official instruction following the protocol described
in your email.

1. choose the package.
I chose the openssh, xorg-x11-base, tcp_wrapper.
2. after installation, I tried to run ssh-host-config under /usr/bin, but I
cannot even find a subfolder named bin under /usr folder. Instead, I found
ssh-host-config file under C:\cygwin\bin. It is unexecutable file. So I ran
ssh-host-config under the prompt in cygwin bash shell after I started it.
3. There are many opitions I can choose. I input ssh-host-config -d -c
options -w pwd
I thought the user sshd_server is a default user name. if is that
meaning that I have to set up a sshd_server name in user accounts under XP
professional? Can I change user name? what is the password for sshd_server?
Is it pwd ?
4. I logged off and logged on with another user name different with
sshd_server
   Start cygwin bash shell and run ssh-user-config. Ssh-user-config -d -p
word 5. then I tried to ssh myself using ssh localhost
   the error message appeared and it said that connection is refused.
5. how to open port 22 in winXP firewall
The instruction is vague and unclear. I thought it causes a big problem for
beginner like me.
Hope you can help me out. I really need some helps.
Thanks in advance!

Best

Shiliang

Is the xemacs-emacs-common package required for emacs 22.1 ?

"cvs co cygwin"

This doesn't work for me:

---
$ CVSROOT=:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/src cvs co cygwin
cvs server: cannot find module `cygwin' - ignored
cvs [checkout aborted]: cannot expand modules
---

Hm. Looking at the CVS layout it appears that I might need "src/",
which is the common parent of "winsup/" and "newlib/".

I'll try that.

...

Hm, I can see that this is going to take a long time to cvs co. I'll
report back later how it works.

Okay, sorry, "winsup" is the right name of the module, not cygwin. But
checking out the module "winsup" should have gotten you the toplevel,
etc/, include/, libiberty/, newlib/, and winsup/:

winsup  -a src-support naked-winsup naked-libiberty naked-newlib
naked-include

http://sourceware.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/CVSROOT/modules?rev=1.70&content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup&cvsroot=src

If you did "cvs co winsup" and only got a winsup directory and not all
those others, then something is wrong with your cvs client
configuration.

And again, just to make sure: you are running the toplevel
configure/make, right?

> Hm. Looking at the CVS layout it appears that I might need "src/",

That would be extreme overkill, as src is home to a large number of
projects, of which cygwin is just a small subset. The modules file
above shows how the various subdirectories are parts of various
projects.

You aren't even building any part of Cygwin here, you're building
binutils, a totally separate project. You're also going to be building
gdb, insight, tcl, tk, possibly a simulator of some kind, and god knows
what else, before even getting to newlib and then winsup, because that
is how a combined tree works. I really doubt you want to do all this.

To fix the error, install the missing libraries. Though it indicates
some kind of configury error that it would try to link against -liconv
if required libs are missing.

They are very simple and standard (from the build script):

   ../configure --prefix=${prefix_dir} || return 1

   make LD='$(CC)' || return 1

These are (essentially) the same steps that are used in
the .cygport for creating the Cygwin version of Emacs.

Would you please do the following?

$ make distclean
$ LDFLAGS='-Wl,--enable-auto-import -Wl,--enable-auto-image-base' \
 ../configure --prefix=${prefix_dir} > configure.log 2>&1
$ bzip2 configure.log

and then include configure.log.bz2 as an attachment to an email

to find out what is missing from the environment that is used to
build Emacs via cygport.

It can be, depending on whether you need to use the 'b2m' or
'rcs-checkin' programs
that are normally included in emacs distributions. Because xemacs also
includes these
two programs, there was a conflict if someone attempted to install both
the emacs
and xemacs packages. (In many other distributions, conflicts like this
have been
resolved by creating packages with names such as 'emacsen-common'.) In
addition,
if you write programs in Emacs Lisp and want to use Emacs's tag feature,
then
you will need to install the 'ctags' package also because Emacs's
'etags' program

is not being included in the Cygwin Emacs package.

These requirements were listed in the announcement and in the Cygwin README
for Emacs.

file visible to Windoze but not Cygwin- possible causes?

2007-07-27 Thread Mike Marchywka

Hi,

I've got a short c++ program that is apparently corrupting memory as
I get link errors trying to overwrite the old executable after running it
because someone thinks the file is still in use by a process I can no longer
find.

The program is not visible to cygwin "ls" and "find" complains

$ find -name "*"
find: ./a.exe: No such file or directory

I can see it in Windoze explorer and delete it after rebooting as Windoze
no longer things the file is busy. None of the processes that used the
executable

seem to exist with "ps" or task manager.

What is going on with the file? Sometimes I get file-busy problems
while the anti-virus software is scanning giga-byte files I'm trying to
throw out but otherwise haven't seen a problem like this.

It seems to be a very specific failure mode as the program doesn't die
and moving around code and changing optimization flags just changed
the datasets on which the problem occurs. I haven't been able to
get it to occur with no optimizations specified but possibly I haven't found
the right data. Kind of odd for a flakey bug to be so specific.

I'm quite certain I have a simple dumb bug in my code but I am
curious about the specific problem it seems to generate.

Thanks.

Just some random toughts:

- Man rshd shows the meaning of the second error message you received,
"Permission denied.
   The authentication procedure described above failed."
so better test with the same user name that worked with rlogin.

- Windows 2003 server may have its own rshd service running; that could explain
why rlogin works (it's Cygwin's rlogin service) and rsh does not (it's Windows
shell service). The shell service may even be disabled by default in
/etc/inetd.conf (I don't know, I usually disable a lot of things there).

- Domain users may have their HOME directory on remote machines, mounted
directories, and that may be a problem which explains the access denied message.

uhm... if im not mistaken, this list is for the support of:
1) the usge of cygwin1.dll (for use in porting apps to cygwin for
later introduction into the source trees)

2) the installation of cygwin (meaning from setup.exe)
3) the general mongering of cygwin relating to the KERNEL not APPS
(app support should go to the maintainer of that package)

(i may be wrong) but shouldnt this be taken to cygwin-dev?

Developers like Brian Dessent know what they are talking about and know
when and where to redirect threads. You don't have to worry about
things like that.
