Tetex installation problem on cygwin

2005-02-15 Thread Kim Youngbae
Dear Cygwin:
Recently I set up cygwin on XPpro SP2 with setup.exe (version 2.457.2.2)
including tetex package. After installation, I started tetex but it has
been stopped
with following message:
-

$tex a.tex
This is TeXk, Version 3.141592 (Web2C 7.5.3)
file:line:error style messages enabled.
%&-line parsing enabled.
kpathsea: Running mktexfmt tex.fmt
tcfmgr: no info for file `fmtutil.cnf' in map
`/usr/share/texmf/texconfig/tcfmgr.map'.
fmtutil: config file `fmtutil.cnf' not found.
I can't find the format file `tex.fmt'!
-

And the following is tcfmgr.map
-
# file rel dir search path progname
config dvipdfm/config other text filesdvipdfm
config.ps dvips/configdvips config-
modes.mfmetafont/misc .mf -
pdftexconfig.textex/generic/config .tex-
fmtutil.cnf web2c web2c files -
mktex.cnf web2c web2c files -
updmap.cfg web2c web2c files -
XDvixdviother text filesxdvi
-
I assumed a path problem, and
I type the following in cygwin.bat file.
set TEXMFCNF='/usr/share/texmf/web2c'
But It does not works.
Is it a problem of configuration or installation of tetex?
I attached output of cygcheck -svr

Possibly a perms problem on the web2c files. See if this helps:

Correct. Cygwin relies entirely on the underlying 'doze OS for file-system
support, device drivers, and so on. Since there is no 'doze support for jffs2,
there is no way to format and mount such a filesystem under cygwin.

  http://cygwin.com/acronyms#PTC, of course ;-)

That's because ttere are several projects mirrored there. If you look at the
top level directory listing at http://www.cygwin.mirrors.pair.com/, you'll see
that it has a copy of the entire sourceware.org directory tree. Only stuff
under the cygwin subdirectory is cygwin related; the stuff under jffs2 is indeed
Linux-targeted.

That's NTFS, BTW, but it seems fine under both cygwin and DOS to me. The only
thing I couldn't get to work was "copy AAA aaa" or "cp AAA aaa"; that didn't
work under either.

That's just the drive that we use for thought process monitoring as part
of cygwin's continued efforts to provide feedback for homeland security.
Don't worry you'll be forgetting that this error ever existed as soon as
you download the next version of cygwin.

Thanks, that helped.
Now, currently the users have a telnet client called
'Reflections' that supports 'dynamic' fonts controlled
from the home-grown, internal application. On some screens
the fonts are large because there is not much data displayed.
On other screens the fonts are small due to lots of data
displayed.

Is there some application already within cygwin that would
support this dynamic font thing?

kerberos

2005-02-15 Thread Kevin Van Workum
There is a site that I need to access via kerberos. Has anyone built the
kerberos clients on cygwin? I have a windows version of kinit, which lets
me get a ticket. I can then use putty's ssh to login. I'd like to use the
cygwin OpenSSH to do this. If I try, I get:

debug1: Authentications that can continue: external-keyx,gssapi-with-mic
debug1: No more authentication methods to try.
Permission denied (external-keyx,gssapi-with-mic).
Maybe there are some environment stuff that OpenSSH needs to use my token?
I'm new to kerberos, so I don't know what external-keyx and
gssapi-with-mic are. Am I stuck using Putty?

Could this be a problem with 1.0-1 ping utility?"

setup package format v. rpm, reasoning?

2005-02-15 Thread Linda W
I can imagine during the early development of cygwin, the rpm
package types were rather "unsupportable" -- especially on a
"first install", since no unix shell or coreutils are available.
However, after the basic support is installed, what was the reasoning
for keeping packages in YAPM (YetAnotherPackageManager).
It seems even a bit more surprising considering Cygwin's early
roots coming from a RedHat...
Why is the current setup.exe "format" still the preferred format?
Would it be beneficial to start having the packages moved toward
rpm format? It would be useful, at times, to do the equivalent
of an "rpm -qf ", or "rpm -qi" for info, etc...Yes,
one can continue to reinvent the wheel by writing utils that parse
file lists in /etc/setup, but it seems that would be 'reinventing'
the wheel for no great purpose...
So I guess I'm curious why Cygwin uses YAPM since RPM has been
ported? I'm not looking for any religious debates -- just
technical/engineering reasons why a different package. I'm not
"sold" on the rpm package manager, just wondering why the need
for creating another format?

It's weird -- I tried installing an RPM, and among files that
were listed as 'missing' were /bin/rm, /bin/sh, /usr/bin/perl
and libc -- I can see RPM not knowing about the libc package
name, but the filenames? I know they're installed, so what's
the scoop?
Thanks,
-linda

There's been plenty of discussion of this so if you're interested in the
details, see the email archives. In particular, take a look at a recent
thread (within the last couple of months) on the cygwin-apps list
discussing setup alternatives and RPM. I think that thread in particular
provides many of the answers you're looking for.

It would require a new setup.exe. The current setup program is a pure
windows program. This is needed because it doesn't require using any
cygwin program or package. If it used, say for example the
cygwin1.dll, that dll couldn't be updated because windows won't allow
files to be changed while they are in use.

So, the new setup would need create a temporary cygwin environment
that is totally separate from any already installed cygwin environment.
The environment could have rpm and do updates pointing to the cygwin
environment being updated.

Or setup would need non-cygwin programs that know how to use rpm.
Both of these would require rewriting setup from scratch. Do a search
for discussions about why setup.exe hasn't been changed.

It's weird -- I tried installing an RPM, and among files that
were listed as 'missing' were /bin/rm, /bin/sh, /usr/bin/perl

the scoop?
rpm uses it's database to determine what is there or not. While
/bin/sh, etc, may be on the system, they aren't in the rpm database,
and hence the error.

Cygwin's early roots did not come from Red Hat. They came from
Cygnus. That's what the "Cyg" stands for.

I could duplicate this. It is fixed in the latest snapshot.

Actually, not to worry. I already sent them an advance copy of cygwin
1.5.13. They don't seem to be all that worried about this problem now.

Btw, I urge everyone to try the latest cygwin snapshot!

For the record: mkfs.jffs2 takes as input a directory and an
option device table file, and turns that directly into a file
containing a jffs2 filesystem. So, OS support really isn't
required.

Getting mkfs.jffs2 to build & run under Cygwin is not all that
difficult. I've done it before, and gotten permission from my
employer to package it for Cygwin - what I lack at the moment
is time :-/ Until then, if anyone is interested in helping
push this through as a proper Cygwin package, I'd be happy to
talk to them about it.
