How could I do that if I use news.gmane.org server? It doesn't allow me to
type in any fake address - every new one is checked whether it exists or
not. Address taken from "from" field must be valid.

Thanks.

This ends this discussion. Take gmane-specific issues to gmane, please.

Read the README carefully in /usr/doc (currently rebase-2.2.README).
Particularly the part about stopping *all* Cygwin services (e.g.,
inetd) and make sure you don't run rebase (or rebaseall) from within rxvt.
Well the problem disappeared (unfortunately because I accidently removed
the file that I was grepping). Would I rebaseall?

At a guess your small script (that works) doesn't use `Fcntl' while
your larger script does. So, rebase'ing might help here as it does
look similar.
My larger script does indeed have a call to lock a file but the path
taken in the code shouldn't have called it.

please include ispell package as an optional download in cygwin

2003-08-30 Thread Glen Peterson
I am an XEmacs user under Windows XP and I need a spelling package to help
me. Ispell was my only option. After spending a few hours trying to
compile ispell and finding I was missing certain required libraries, I found
a precompiled version for cygwin at:

http://www.math.auc.dk/~dethlef/Tips/download.html

I unzipped that (it worked immediately under cygwin), and added the ispell
bin directory to my path in order to make it work with XEmacs. If you
included ispell with cygwin, that would save almost all the trouble of
adding spell-checking to XEmacs.

Let me know if I can do anything to help get this package included. Thank
you very much for providing cygwin. It's a big help to me.

aspell is on its way (waiting for cygwin 1.5 - for no particually good
reason)... it is 'compatiable' with ispell and supposedly far superior.

Newbie Help: IMAP Server

2003-08-30 Thread Chris Withers
Hi there,

I'd like to get an IMAP Server up and running on my Windows desktop machine to
serve up my old archived mail.

In the abscence of any obvious, decent Open Source IMAP Servers for native
Windows, I turned to Cygwin.

Ideally, I want to be running either Cyrus or Courier, but after a cursory
Google I couldn't find any examples of those being run on Windows or under
Cygwin. That said, I'm sure either of them could be run under Cygwin, has anyone
here managed it?

Anyway, failing that, I ran setup.exe and selected the various uw-imap packages.
The seemed to install fine but now I'm a bit miffed. I'm having a hard time
finding installation and configuration docs for these packages.

That said, I think setup.py installed things okay, which leaves me with a few
questions:

1. How to I configure the IMAP demon, setup an account on it, etc.

2. How do I run it?

3. How do I configure it/cygwin so that is starts whenever the machine boots up?

If there's obvious docs that answer these, please point me in the right
direction :-)

Thanks for any help!

Chris

start with 'man 8c uw-imapd' (and see docs in \usr\doc\Cygwin)
The docs leave out a few tricks you need to get the latest version
working. First, you need to add Everyone to /etc/passwd. Corinna has
already mentioned this is not ideal, but if you want this version of
imapd to work, you need to do it anyway until it's fixed. Here's the
line:

Everyone:*:0:0:,S-1-1-0::

Other than that, the server just runs -- there are no configuration
files or anything. By default it will use built-in Cygwin
authentication, so use whatever username/password you would for the
rest of the system. However, if you want to use CRAM-MD5
authentication, you need to patch the source. I wrote a temporary
patch to get it working -- search the archive to find it.

2. How do I run it?
how about '/usr/sbin/uw-imapd.exe'
This will do nothing but let you interact with it on the console.
IMAPD is an inetd-based service, and must be launched by inetd or
xinetd. Read those docs in /usr/doc and it will say how to set up
inetd to enable IMAP.

3. How do I configure it/cygwin so that is starts whenever the
machine boots up?
cygrunsrv (see docs on this for how to setup cygwin services)
Note that you will be launching *inetd* as a service, not the IMAP
server directly. So make sure you clean up your configuration for
inetd if you're worried about security (by disabling the services in
inetd which you don't want running).

If there's obvious docs that answer these, please point me in the
right
direction :-)

You did the right thing. I spent several days getting uw-imapd
running. It's a great server, but there are a couple glitches on
Cygwin. I'd like to fix them myself if I can find some time...

"Automatic" mount update

2003-08-30 Thread Hannu E K Nevalainen \(garbage mail\)

Below I have enclosed a bash session that has me a bit baffled

Note that I have made attempts to have the active mounts saved into
/cygwin.mnt (as the two first bash command printouts shows). This is meant
to automate any CHANGES in the mount points between my OS changes (Dual
boot: W98SE and W2K Advanced Server).
{bash PPID/PID and "exit status" (s=) shown in the prompt}

The /F1 and /F2 mounts seems to have "stuck", I have "umount"-ed them
several times with all "tricks" and umount flags that I can think of beeing
relevant - still they show up next time I launch bash!

Do I need to "umount -A" in "~/.bash_logout"?
How would this affect any running rxvt/bash instances?
 (I do suspect problems)

Anyone here who can shed some light on the matter?

autoconf is a perl program. There were some releases of perl that had a
few issues with incorrectly using DOS line endings even on binary
mounts. Try upgrading perl to the most recent release (5.8.0-5 for
"regular" cygwin; 5.8.1-something for "test" or "experimental" cygwin)

I believe you need to use "umount -s /F1" and "umount -s /F2". I think
the -s and -u flags might be mutually exclusive, or, rather, one overrides
the other (thus, if you specify -su, only -u is recognized).

So, what's the problem? You seem to have gotten rid of the /F1 and /F2
mounts here... Can you please show a log of the invocation of a new "bash
--login -c /bin/mount" from the cmd prompt? Do the mounts show up again?
How about "bash --login -x -c /bin/mount"? Do you see where these mounts
are added?

Nope. Out of the ten machines I run Cygwin on at work (2000/XP Pro with
1.5.2/1.5.3s/CVS) I havn't seen anything like this.

Though come to think of it I was seeing a strange problem with sourcenav,
a month or so back, where running any cygwin program (from within sourcenav)
would result in a SEGV (e.g., `grep' and `cvs'). Never even attempted to
investigate it. (Probably should have at least mentioned it here)

Just putting that out there in case it might help, probably won't in any case
as the machine in question was really crapped out, anyway.

Does running, say

help at all?

I have not tried other combinations.

No, I think not. You replied to my message; with my e-mail address "attached"
to your reply, either by you or your MUA. Ala food for harvesters.

This is a defficiency in (current?) Cygwin perl, which AFAIK, was fixed in the latest
release. As a temporary fix, export the above variable in /etc/profile or system
wide (from within Windows).
