Idle threats and inciting people to harass contributors, great policy.

Really I'm just jealous though. Man, it would be *sooo* sweet if the only thing
I had to worry about in my life was a few lines of boilerplate text on 0.0001%
of the emails I get daily! That would indeed be the life.

Yep.

CYGWIN_NT-5.0 PC09 1.3.21s(0.77/3/2) 20030302 23:00:55 i686 unknown unknown Cygwin

Completed the smoke. I was discussing a longstanding Cygwin issue yesterday
with some other smokers and we all agreed that there is still a glitch in
cygwin that /we/ think cygwin is to blame for.

Running the complete test from the prompt completes without error, but when
started from a script in the background, there are still messages that get a
 added and unexpectedly yield instead of plain , causing
these tests to fail: Expected Foo, got Foo

$CYGWIN is "tty ntsec binary"

If you can fix this, you can add Cygwin to one of the systems where smokes on
bleadperl yield a full-O (all OK) report.

Enjoy, have FUN! H.Merijn

Cygwin and other open source licenses

2003-03-04 Thread Kasper Nielsen
Hi,

I was just browsing Slashdot and came across this interview with
Professor Eben Moglen. (see below)
I’m currently doing a project at my university that uses the cygwin.dll
for windows compatibility.
My project is licensed under some special open source university license
like most universities has.
However after having read the interview it seems to me that I’m
violating the license by not using the GPL for my work but some other
open source license with my university requires.
Am I right?

- Kasper

---
 2) Clarifying the GPL
by sterno
One issue that I know has come up for me is how the GPL applies in
situations where I'm using GPL software but I'm not actually modifying
it. For example, I write a Java application, and it is reliant on a JAR
that is GPL'd. Do I then need to GPL my software? I haven't changed the
JAR in anyway, I'm just redistributing it with my software. The end user
could just as easily download the JAR themselves, it's just a
convenience for me to offer it in my package.

Eben:

The language or programming paradigm in use doesn't determine the rules
of compliance, nor does whether the GPL'd code has been modified. The
situation is no different than the one where your code depends on static
or dynamic linking of a GPL'd library, say GNU readline. Your code, in
order to operate, must be combined with the GPL'd code, forming a new
combined work, which under GPL section 2(b) must be distributed under
the terms of the GPL and only the GPL. If the author of the other code
had chosen to release his JAR under the Lesser GPL, your contribution to
the combined work could be released under any license of your choosing,
but by releasing under GPL he or she chose to invoke the principle of
"share and share alike."

the rest of the interview can be found on

There is no *need* for a separate package - but it would make life easier
for those who want to help regression testing.

The testsuite can't possibly be run after every commit on all target
platforms. Red Hat may have a lot of resources, but I don't believe for a
moment that it they can run the testsuite on a couple of thousand machines
after every commit.

I never said it was a necessity - or even implied it. I said "wouldn't it
be great if" (or WIBGI for short). I think it would be a good idea to have
a separate testsuite that I can just install & run whenever a new snapshot
gets launched. I think it will be of help to signal regressions and I want
to be of help if I can. I *know* not having a license disclaimer does not
deprive me of CVS access - I also know that I don't want to have to
compile Cygwin every time I want to run the test suite - and the test
suite as is just happens to depend on new-cygwin1.dll (to test a
just-compiled Cygwin DLL).

OK, I'll admit I've never tried that (I haven't had the time and/or will
to look into it further than just "darn, doesn't work - oh well..".

And, as I pointed out, you don't have any of my machines. Of course the
testsuite does not test everything, but I would be surprised if it doesn't
test anything at all.

But hey, if you don't think it'll be useful, I won't insist :)

BTW: I will run the testsuite against the latest snapshot and see if I get
any regressions, of course - I'll let you know :p

RE: Control the cygwin terminal with escape sequences

2003-03-04 Thread Philippe Verdret
Hi Igor,

After updating cygwin on my pc, i try again:

% perl -e 'system("stty raw -echo") ; print "\e[H\e[J"'

which doesn't clear the screen.
I use the ActiveState Perl, 5.8.0, bash 2.05b.0(8) and cygwin-1.3.20-1.
Can you send me a command line which work? I will try it.

Many thanks,
Philippe

And answering:

Philippe,

Works for me (using cygwin-1.3.20, bash-2.05b-8 and perl-5.6.1)... You
might want to report your problem properly, as described in
. Also, check that your perl one-liner
outputs exactly the right sequence (by piping it to "od -c", for example).

If you want to distribute your software in source code form only and
sources for cygwin1.dll are not a part of the distribution, then you are
free to chose any license you want (including proprietary) for your
software.

Thankyou for your comments everyone...

On my home PC (WinXP, latest cygwin), runas immediately exits - there's
no password prompt and no processes are started:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (~) % runas
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (~) %

On my work PC (Win2k, latest cygwin) I get the following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (~) % runas /user:Administrator 'notepad.exe'
Enter password for Administrator:RUNAS ERROR: Unable to change echo mode
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (~) %

Any other useful information that I could supply?

And DTFS?

Thanks again,

Jon.

Why *don't* you want to compile Cygwin when you run the testsuite?
"../src/configure && make", wait a while, all done.

tetex installation wierdness.

2003-03-04 Thread Janus Nicolay Christensen
Hello,

I am experiencing a problem installing the tetex LaTeX distribution
on one machine (called dkms1301) but not the other (called test).
When running the Cygwin setup program I select the following
packages:
* tetex
* tetex-base
* tetex-extra
* ghostscript

On test the installation works, but on dkms1301 some bits seem to be
missing, including the 'latex' symlink in /usr/bin. I have attached
the installation logs from test and dkms1301, and as is evident the
same packages are installed on both machines, so it is not a case
(as far as I can tell) of a missing package (I would have liked to
attach cygcheck outputs also, but I cannot. access the dkms1301
today, and cygcheck output from only one machine offers little in
way of comparing the two installations.)

Has anybody experienced this and if so, what can I do to solve it?

By the way: what are those "compress_bz::error called" messages in
the log files?

I'll write a script that does what's needed to apply the testsuite to the
currently-installed Cygwin DLL - it's not that hard either.

Because I want to test the snapshot Chris wanted to have tested - not some
random build after the snapshot was made.

But, I guess the conclusion of this thread is that it wouldn't be great if
...

OK, I can live with that :)

Thanks for the feedback.

Turns out this was a problem in the Novell client I was using, applying the
patches in nt483pt6.exe from novell.com cured it.

You are confused with your configure line. Your --build flag is very
incorrect.

Either: Drop the --build flag, use the rest as-is to build a cygwin1.dll
dependent version of setup.

Or: Use the configure line as-is from
http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin-apps/setup.html.

Interesting indeed. Something very weird is happening, if a non-null pointer
if causing a segfault on being deleted. I wonder if it could be a
double-free. I'll fiddle with this.

Manu: Just to confirm, this is setup from HEAD of CVS, showing version 2.312
on it's splash page?
Also, could you send the output of 'find' run from your local package
directory? (as an attachment)

"Redundant" is hardly the word. "Ludicrous" is perhaps better.

Last time I checked, it's not possible to force a non-disclosure
agreement or any other form of contract on someone just by having them
read it. Some sort of verbal or written consent is required ... at

Re: Malloc array size limit

2003-03-04 Thread Fabrizio Impagnatiello
Thanks a lot.

I tried.
Sorry, but the suggestion to define the heap_chunk key in Windows registry did
not work. My application globally allocates about 560 Mbyte memory but no
single data structure can be larger than 128 MB.
IT is compiled with gcc 3.2-3 under cygwin 1.3.20-1 environment. Nevertheless,
if the run-time path is set to the cygwin1.dll version 1.3.12 I can run any
array sized program (no 384 MB limit!) without using any heap statement!!

So I believe that there is a bug in cygwin DLL since version 1.3.13.

If you have any other suggestion, Welcome!!

Bye from Italy

Hi. When will the Cygwin's setup have a option to maximize and/or
resize the window of the setup itself? It's very anoying to scroll the
bars all the time, and there are 2, the vertical and the horizontal
ones! Please fix this.

RE: Control the cygwin terminal with escape sequences

2003-03-04 Thread Igor Pechtchanski
Philippe,

First off, there is no need to send the message directly to me -- I read
the list.  Hence the "Reply-To".

Secondly, I used the exact line you quoted in your message
(perl -e 'print "\033[H\033[J"'). It worked.
The only difference I can see is that you use ActiveState's perl, whereas
I use the Cygwin native perl. I'm not even going to ask why (yet).

Did you try piping the output of the perl command to "od -c"? What did it
show? What is the value of your CYGWIN variable? Are you running this in
an xterm, an rxvt, or a command window? Did you attach the output of
"cygcheck -s -v -r" as indicated in ?  Please
provide the above information if you want people to be able to address
your problem.

FYI, I just tried your command with ActiveState perl, and it works too,
provided you have "tty" in your CYGWIN environment variable.

PUTENV works fine if debugged with insight gdb but fails if in a standalone program !

2003-03-04 Thread gilles bourgeois
hi folks,
i am using getenv/putenv from stdlib (my source comes from UNIX world).
the point is that getenv works fine, but I CANNOT modify variables with PUTENV !!
Actually, if I debug with "insight gdb" a little foo.c using setenv , it works fine !!!
I really do not undestand why (I suppose it is a question of shell environment) , so
I wonder if some of you ever succeed with a simple putenv wriiten in a tiny C program ?
thanks

Ok. Let me clarify. I didn't actually read the disclaimer. In my
addled mind I thought "notify the sender" meant notify the sender's
company. I would never advocate complaining to some hapless victim of a
company policy. Yes, I wasn't thinking clearly, no, I am not back
pedalling.

I was COMPLETELY WRONG to have implied that the *sender* should be
contacted and I, again, apologize.

Where in the world is this coming from? Did you just wake up this morning
and decide you were going to be a jerk?

I did indicate that I was reconsidering implementing Igor's suggestion
in another message. Maybe you missed it. So, once again I must
acknowledge the fact that I wasn't entirely clear. I was wrong.
Whatever you like. I am now again thinking about ways to do this.

Hmm.  I'm sure this is one of those self-deprecating attempts at humor;
using profanity to call someone juvenile. Tastes in humor vary widely,
I guess.

It's rather "ironic" that you have so many important things to worry
about but you still take time out of your busy schedule for name
calling. I guess that must be pretty high up on your priority list.

I hadn't see this in the FAQ or the mailing lists. At first I thought
this was only via sshd, but even when I'm at the console, a window pops
up with the following:

  End Program - /cygdrive/c/dev <<-- title bar

Windows cannot end this program. It may need more time
to complete an operation.

To return to Windows and check the status of the
program, click Cancel.

If you choose to end the program immediately, you will lose
any unsaved data. To end the program now, click End

Any ideas?

Why is everybody assuming that a random host on the internet is running
a dns server on port 53? Consider this senario:

  I put my machine on the internet. I then put a udp listener at port
  53. I then distribute software that knows how to create a udp packet
  to port 53 on my host. I can send anything I want to to that port,
  files, passwords, registry entries... Just because its going to a
  DNS port does not mean that its DNS data. It just means that its
  data for the service at that particular IP Address/Port number.

Now if you filter to certain hosts that you KNOW are running dns on
port 53, then that is different. However that means you must keep
updating the filter lists since I know my ISP changes my DNS servers
almost every time I dial up. (My guess is they have a couple of DNS
server per class C subnet/POP, but that's just a guess).

Running ZoneAlarm gives you a hint that something bad may be going on
when a program that shouldn't be making DNS queries starts making
them. Or alternatively starts making queries tothe DNS port
on joe blow's computer rather than a local network computer.

Can you be more explicit about 'some bits'? The symlink is not in the
package, it should be created during postinstall, by
/etc/postinstall/post-texmf.sh.

> Has anybody experienced this and if so, what can I do to solve it?

There were complaints before about the missing latex symlink, but I've
not managed to get a useful bugreport (that's why I'm including the
symlink in the new tetex-bin package).

There are several things you can do. Last week, new tetex packages
were released. You can rerun setup.exe and your problems may go away
(if you need xdvi, see
http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-apps/2003-03/msg00045.html)

If you cannot or do not want to update tetex:

  * Make sure that you have all dependencies installed:

   ash clear cygutils cygwin ed diffutils fileutils findutils gawk
   grep jpeg libkpathsea3 libncurses6 libpng12 perl sed sh-utils
   textutils termcap tiff zlib

esp. packages from base, that were missing from the previous tetex
release, ie:

   clear diffutils fileutils findutils gawk sh-utils textutils

  * If you're updating tetex from an earlier version, you may need to
uninstall and then reinstall cygutils

  * Reinstall tetex-base (or run /etc/postinstall/post-texmf.sh[.done])

  * If the symlink is all you're missing, you can create it by hand:

ln -s /usr/bin/tex.exe /usr/bin/latex.exe

Greetings,
Jan.

Richard,

Well, it's only going to work if you have a single Cygwin shell window
open. That's usually the case for me. (I've never tried it with X
running.) For the record, by CYGWIN variable is "binmode ntsec" (and
now the "ntsec" is redundant--I guess it's just a leftover of times gone by).

I would prefer something without the word "DISCLAIMER" so that I

It almost seems like there is a good use for mime lurking here somewhere.
Although I did say that we don't strip mime attachments, it is possible
to turn this on. If we had something like an X-mime-disclaimer type
I could have the mailing list software strip that automatically.

Then it would be up to the sender to figure out how to get the trailer
to show up in the message. Hmm. Maybe not a good idea after all.

How about something like --END OF MESSAGE--?

Yeah, I modeled the suggestion after MIME, but it seems most disclaimers

no good...

[build failure] xemacs-21.5-b11 on Win2000+Cygwin

2003-03-04 Thread David A. Cobb
I first sent this to the Xemacs lists, where I didn't get any response.
The error is so totally disastrous that a release should not have
happened if this bites every Cygwin installation.

Which makes me suspect my Cygwin is broken.

How can I tell? Specifically, how do I tell what the configure proc was
trying to do when it got an error compiling "junk.c"

Sitting around waiting out the blizzard, I figured it would be a good
time to see about compiling Xemacs-21.5-b11.

Starting with what should have been a simple build . . .

+ make clean
make: *** No rule to make target `clean'. Stop.
+ ../configure i686-pc-cygwin --compiler=gcc --without-x --extra-verbose
--with-site-lisp=yes --package-path=/usr/local/lib/xemacs/ --with-pop
--debug --error-checking=all
   Defining PACKAGE_PATH_USER_DEFINED
checking whether ln -s works... yes
   Defining EMACS_MAJOR_VERSION = 21
   Defining EMACS_MINOR_VERSION = 5
   Defining EMACS_BETA_VERSION = 11
   Defining XEMACS_CODENAME = "cabbage"

One small surprise is the following early error message in sysout
(rather than configure.log) . . .
checking for GNU libc... no
Extracting information from the machine- and system-dependent headers...
conftest.c:44: parse error before `=' token
   Defining SYSTEM_TYPE = "cygwin_nt-5.0"
libs_machine = ''

The configure ends horribly with:

   Appending "Makefile.in" to $ac_output_files
   Appending "lib-src/Makefile.in" to $ac_output_files
   Appending "src/Makefile.in:src/Makefile.in.in:src/depend" to
$ac_output_files
creating ./config.status
creating Makefile.in
creating lib-src/Makefile.in
creating src/Makefile.in
creating src/paths.h
creating lib-src/config.values
creating src/config.h
creating lwlib/config.h
lwlib/config.h is unchanged
creating ./Makefile
junk.c:19: parse error before string constant
<
creating ./GNUmakefile
junk.c:16: parse error before string constant
creating lib-src/Makefile
junk.c:7: parse error before string constant
creating lib-src/GNUmakefile
junk.c:7: parse error before string constant
creating src/Makefile
junk.c:7: parse error before string constant
creating src/GNUmakefile
junk.c:7: parse error before string constant

And all of ./Makefile & ./GNUmakefile are empty. (0 bytes)

So that it applies cleanly against setup HEAD.

Your original patch contains 2 hunks:
1) remove some code
2) add it back later in the function

Hunk 2 has been comitted to cvs HEAD, but Hunk 1 has not.

remote cygwin/sshd multiuser conflict with console login

2003-03-04 Thread James D Below
Hi Everyone.

I am in the process of setting up remote access to our W2K server(terminal
services enabled) via ssh.

I have sshd up and running and users can login remotely to the server. Sshd
is also running under an account with network access (not SYSTEM)

The problem is that if a user is logged in at the console, the users that
login via ssh will inherit the network drive mappings from the console.
That wouldn't be so bad but when the ssh users disconnect the drives (net
use X: /d), the console users drives are also disconnected.

Does anyone know why this happens and how one might work around this?
Also, the users that use a terminal service connection (RDP), there drive
mappings don't interfere with the ssh sessions.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

thanks.

1.3.20-1 CYGWIN ; csh,bash and ./config

2003-03-04 Thread Konstantinos Makrodimitris
Hi,

I am trying to run a configure file
./config  Cygwin-i686
in order then to :
cd Cygwin-i686
make
The file “config” is like:
_
#!/bin/csh -f
goto begin
syntax:
 echo ''
 echo 'Usage: config [debug] [tcl] [fftw] [/][.comment]'
 echo 'Environment variable NAMD_BUILD_BASE may point to scratch
directory.'
 echo ''
 echo ': '
 ( cd arch ; ls -1 *.arch |sed -e 's/\.arch//' | egrep -v 'template' | pr
-3 -t)
 echo ''
 exit 1

begin:
 if ($#argv < 1) goto syntax
 if ( $1 == debug ) then
   set use_debug = 1
   shift
 else
   set use_debug = 0
 endif
.. .
_
I take:

bash: ./config: /bin/csh: bad interpreter: No such file or directory

Changing the first line of the “config” in sh mode
#!/bin/sh –f
I take:

$ sh ./config Cygwin-i686
goto: not found
syntax:: not found
Usage: config [debug] [tcl] [fftw] [/][.comment]
Environment variable NAMD_BUILD_BASE may point to scratch directory.
Also
ln -s /bin/bash.exe /bin/sh.exe
didn’t work
Could you please give me your advice.

My Best,
Konstantinos Makrodimitris

Malloc array size limit (2)

2003-03-04 Thread Fabrizio Impagnatiello
Again on same issue.
if I compile the following source with -mno-cygwin option, the EXE code
allocating up to 1 GByte runs good.

#define Meg 1078516
int a[220*Meg];
int main(int *argc, char **argv)
{
int i;

for (i=0; i<220*Meg; i++) {
a[i] = 102 + i;
}
printf("A[1]=%d\n",a[1]);
return 0;
}

If the option is removed, the cygwin1.dll fails.

Well, obviously, if you don't use cygwin, then you don't get any limits it
imposes. I suggest you try setting heap_chunk_in_mb using the *exact*
regtool invocation given here:
http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/setup-maxmem.html

And then *make sure you have closed all cygwin processes*. Reboot if
necessary. Then retry.

Max.

Hmm, and here I am with my 8-line signature...

Seriously, though, I'm a firm believer in freedom of speech. If people
*want* to include 50-line disclaimers in their signature (and take the
resulting abuse), I don't think we have the right to stop them. I was
proposing a way for people to get rid of the annoying things required by
company policy that they *don't* want in their messages (and currently
have no way to remove).

Re: 1.3.20-1 CYGWIN ; csh,bash and ./config

2003-03-04 Thread Igor Pechtchanski
Konstantinos,

First off, the script is written for csh. Why would you expect sh or bash
to be able to interpret it? These shells use different syntax.

The original script failed because you don't have csh installed. Cygwin
does not have a "csh" package, but it does have a "tcsh" package that
makes /bin/csh a symbolic link to /bin/tcsh. Please install the "tcsh"
package. If you do have it installed, something is corrupted in your
installation, please re-install it using setup.exe. Note that you don't
need to reinstall Cygwin, just the "tcsh" package.
Igor
P.S. FYI, there is also an "ash" package that provides a "real" /bin/sh.

You do realize that csh and sh are totally different, right?
There is a csh-type shell for Cygwin, see the tcsh package.

Is this OK with the GPL?

2003-03-04 Thread John Morrison

New Windows Installers
* Safely install Cygwin with its environment automatically configured
for Windows OS machines.
* The Uninstaller features cleanup of registry settings and environment
variables.
* All toolsuites are consistent (Stout’s Law) in how you install them.

WinXP installation - can't access all of the package on the Select Packages page

2003-03-04 Thread Wuphons Reach
Trying to install Cygwin on a WindowsXP machine with
*small fonts* (but 1400x1050 resolution) and I'm
getting the problem that I can't see the scroll bar
that would let me select packages. In addition, the
(3) radio buttons in the upper right are bumped to the
right (I can't see anything after "Ex" on the 3rd
button).

I encountered the same error (no scroll bar) on the
"Choose a Download Site" page, except that I was able
to down-arrow until I found a mirror site that worked
for me.

This is the same problem as (which was never
addressed):
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2003-01/msg01847.html

Appearance settings are set to Windows XP style with
the normal font size (under Display Properties). Same
error when I switch back to Windows2000 style.

Ok, I'll try again. Though, note that I built the sources with MinGW and
its build environment, not with Cygwin.

Yes, I also suspect a double-free. I've commented "delete original" and naturally
setup.exe worked. (I have now Cygwin installed :)

Yes, I confirm.

cf find.txt. (build.sh and compress.diff are not in CVS)

[...]
> Please try this patch (against current CVS):

I've patched and rebuilt.
I have now: "Can't open (null) for reading: No such file"
This occurs in install.cc, line 173:

---
/* install one source at a given prefix. */
static int
install_one_source (packagemeta & pkgm, packagesource & source,
  String const &prefixURL, String const &prefixPath, package_type_t type)
{
  int errors = 0;
  Progress.SetText2 (source.Base ());
  if (!source.Cached () || !io_stream::exists (source.Cached ()))
{
  note (NULL, IDS_ERR_OPEN_READ, source.Cached (), "No such file");
  return 1;
}
---

Something strange, the original setup.exe no longer crashes, it seems that the
problem occurs when first installing Cygwin.

BTW, that registry entries are created during setup? I found
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Cygnus Solutions".
Is there other info stored in ini-files.
I need to remove all of Cygwin and install again, in order to reproduce the problem.
Uninstall packages seems to keep track of the previous installation.

The problem was determined to be a bug in Windows (MS's own sample wizard
code shows the bug).

That doesn't help you very much, but there is not a lot that can be done,
short of re-writing setup's windowing system.

Max.

I meant the one with all the tarballs and setup.ini, but never mind, since
the bug has gone away.

Umm. This bug is known to exist, but we don't know how to reproduce it.

That key, and its HKEY_CURRENT_USER counterpart.
Everything else is stored under the cygwin root.

Because then the window would be resizable, but the controls wouldn't resize
with it.

Sorry... reply sends it to you by default (only
noticed it as it flew out towards the SMTP server).

Not sure why that would be a problem... the controls
aren't going to care if they resize to match the
window (because the window is already one size too
small). The positioning and size of the controls
won't change, instead by stretching the canvas I'll be
able to see the bits of the controls that don't fit on
the current canvas.

So, ugliness and sloppy appearance for all, in order to deal with a rarely
encountered bug.

Why would it be ugly and sloppy? The only people who
are going to want to resize the window are those who
are encountering the bug. The rest of the folks are
just going to see a window that is exactly the same
size as it was before, only with a resizable border.

[PATCH] corrects search order of directories for include files for gcc 3.2

2003-03-04 Thread Andre Bleau
I observed that with Cygwin's gcc 3.2, /usr/include/w32api is searched
before /usr/include, even when gcc is called without -mwin32 nor
-mno-cygwin. If somes files exist with the same name in both
/usr/include/w32api and /usr/include, such as mapi.h or the files in the GL
subdirectory, the later are never used. IMO, this is wrong.

With Cygwin's gcc-2, /usr/include is searched before /usr/include/w32api
when gcc-2 is called without -mwin32 nor -mno-cygwin.

I need this issue to be settled before I can prepare an updated version of
the OpenGL package.

Here's a patch that sets the search order to:

gcc -mno-cygwin :
 /usr/i686-pc-mingw32/lib/../../include/w32api
 /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-cygwin/3.2/include
 /usr/include/mingw
gcc -mwin32 :
 /usr/i686-pc-mingw32/lib/../../include/w32api
 /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-cygwin/3.2/include
 /usr/include
"plain" gcc or gcc -mcygwin
 /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-cygwin/3.2/include
 /usr/include
 /usr/i686-pc-cygwin/lib/../../include/w32api
I tested the patch by modifying the specs file by hand.

The patch is for /usr/src/gcc-3.2-3/gcc/config/i386/cygwin.h

So, basically, those of us who are encountering a
show-stopper bug that prevents us from installing
Cygwin (unless we choose to install the full version,
which is an interesting task in itself when you can't
see that the 3rd radio button is "Expert") have less
to complain about then those who will experience a
minor cosmetic issue?

That strikes me as a very strange prioritization that
a purely cosmetic issue would take priority over
working around a functional bug (regardless that
Microsoft has changed the rules).

Am I correct in understanding then that:

a) there are no plans to deal with this bug
b) those people who are experiencing this bug are
thrown to the wolves
c) this list is not interested in bugs that can't be
fixed in an elegant manner

I can't believe I'm actually chiming in on this one...

If you add some sort of END marker, you might as well add
a BEGIN marker of some sort as well, in case over-zealous

It's not a minor cosmetic issue. It's a sloppy first impression for *every*

Workaround: Change your font/DPI settings.

What do you want us to do? (Given that "Make setup ugly" is not an option)

This list is interested in all bugs.
But we won't use a fix which has greater disadvantages than advantages.

Apart from what "John P. Rouillard [EMAIL PROTECTED]" wrote in another

Which leads to the conclusion that the answer to the above question(s) is:
"Any information that exists on the computer".

Another side of it:
 I have the same "paranoia" as Geoffrey Hausheer, and I firmly believe that
it has kept my computer setup _clean and functional_ for long periods of
time - where friends and workmates have had _plenty_ of trouble.

Another part of the same "paranoia": Before doing any 'more than minor'
setup-changes or software installs I do a COMPLETE backup. For obvious
reasons (see initial message in this thread).

 So far I have considered a Cygwin update to be 'minor' - but I'm beginning
to reconsider, WRT the amount of problems that seem to rise from that...
(reading this ML is what makes one wonder... ;-)

Re: why is bash trying to access my DNS? [OT]

2003-03-04 Thread Randall R Schulz
John,

I get it.

Well, on my system, running Norton Personal Firewall, each distinct
programm that attempts to access the Internet or to which a connection
is attempted (and which is not known to be and has not been granted
access rights) produces an alert. I take it this much is like ZoneAlarm.

In NPF one can continue to individually grant and deny these attempts
or choose to grant or deny them "forever" (which just causes a new rule
to be added to NPF's database--those rules can be edited.) NPF also has
a "zones" notion that allows different protection regimes to be applied
to different zones. Zones are defined by IP addresses or ranges
thereof. I never reflexively hit "grant" on those alerts. Most of the
time if I'm going to grant (not deny), I'll make it a rule and not have
to bother again.

NPF seems to know in detail (beyond just file name) the applications to
which its rules apply, since when I re-install something (say wget)
using the updated application triggers an alert from NPF again.

Perhaps the free version of ZoneAlarm does not provide as flexible or
readily accessible a facility for defining new access control rules?
All I really recall about it was that it (I was actually using one of
the "premium" non-free($) versions) caused my system to lock up when I
used Internet Connection Sharing. That was a couple of years ago. I
dumped it after a couple of those incidents.

Yes, I'm now unable to reproduce the problem. Maybe it occurs only after
"Download from Internet" + "Install from local directory" as I've done
initially.

At first glance, it occurs with the patch you suggested, when uninstalling
packages. Apparently, it is reproducible.

I'll try to download and install again to see if I can reproduce the segfault.

When *uninstalling*? I've only ever seen it when installing.

Anyway, it's definitely not reproducible. It seems to come and go for no
obvious reason.

Hi,
Please google rpm cygwin first.
here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cygwin-rpm/
Unfortunately, it had discontinued. You can download old binary package
rpm-3.0.6.tar.gz.
Note: If you have installed popt, please remove the conflict files in rpm-3.0.6.tar.gz.
BTW: Are these i386 motif rpm files for cygwin?

Hello,

I can't seems to rung enscript in Cygwin. I'm getting the following error
messages:

lpr: can't open 'prn' for writing
lpr: The printer name is invalid.

After I added the enscript package, my lpr doesn't work. Now I can't even
run enscript. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

Thanks,

Yes, Install and Reinstall works fine, Uninstall shows a dialog box which
appears until the cows come home.

So my case is particular, that bug always "works" for me :)

Re: why is bash trying to access my DNS?

2003-03-04 Thread David Means
Randall:

There's nothing that a legitimate DNS server can elicit from a client.
Although, in some special cases, clients can be hacked by specially
crafted DNS responses.

However, if a system is infected with a trojan, then obviously said
system has the potential to be used as a zombie for attacking any
server. In this instance (regarding DNS), ZoneAlarm would do you some
good provided that you never send DNS queries outside of ones network.

But exactly how plausible is that? What I'm questioning is this: how
helpful is the DNS activity alert on ZoneAlarm? Unless it's looking for
the myriad of DNS vulnerablities listed at CERT and other similar
resources, then it's a farily usless check, IMHO. And given that it
appears (from my limited perspective) to be flagging normal DNS traffic,
then I'm of the opinion it's quite useless indeed for the application in
which it's intended to be used, and has in this instance raised concern
where none is actually warrented.

But to answer your original question regarding the data that can be
"sneakily sent via a DSN request", check this out:

For OpenSSH 2.5.2 or greater under Cygwin: access without using a password
or with single-login. Assuming you want to connect from machine A to
machine B using ssh.

== blank passphrase

1) generate private/public keys on A
   $ ssh-keygen -t dsa
   press enter when it asks for the filename
   press enter when it asks for the passphrase (yes, a blank passphrase)
   this will generate two files: ~/.ssh/id_dsa and ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub

2) put ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub from A into ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 on B
   $ cat ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub | ssh B 'cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2'

3) make sure all files are not writable or readable except by owner
   do this on A and B
   $ chmod a-x,go-w,o-r ~/.ssh/*

4) verify it works
   $ ssh B ls -la

== single-logon

1) generate private/public keys on A
   $ ssh-keygen -t dsa
   press enter when it asks for the filename
   enter a passphrase
   this will generate two files: ~/.ssh/id_dsa and ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub

2) put ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub from A in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 on B
   $ cat ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub | ssh B 'cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2'

3) make sure all files are not writable or readable except by owner
   do this on A and B
   $ chmod a-x,go-w,o-r ~/.ssh/*

4) use ssh-agent to manage passphrases
   $ eval $(ssh-agent)

5) make agent aware of passphrases
   $ ssh-add # enter the appropriate passphrase for each remote host

6) verify everything works
   $ ssh B ls -la

[ANNOUNCEMENT] Updated: pdksh-5.2.14-2

2003-03-04 Thread Elfyn McBratney
This package contains pdksh, the Public Domain Korn Shell. Homepage of the

This is an update to fix the lack of the postinstall script run. There was
an error at the top of the file, a double '#' bang on the shebang line which
meant that the script would be ignored when executed. This is now fixed and
files such as /etc/profile.ksh will now be installed.
