Re: Close to libiconv now?

2002-02-09 Thread Charles Wilson

I've rebuilt it using the latest (cygwin-devel) libtool. It seems fine
-- passes all the tests. It's packaged using "my" script mechanism, and
only needs some Cygwin-specific documentation and prefix changed from
/usr/local to /usr and it would be ready for inclusion in cygwin.

HOWEVER

I cannot support additional packages at this time(*). I'm perfectly
willing to hand the completed package over to someone else for
maintainance -- as long as I can wash my hands of it. I built it as a
test of libtool -- but I do NOT want to support it.

Any volunteers?

--Chuck

(*) okay, *one* more -- pkgconfig -- is in the works. but that's it. I
mean it. ;-)

Free 30 Day Trial (Business Opportunity)

2002-02-09 Thread David L. Wynn

Greetings:

This message is being sent to you because you have either sent or requested
information regarding business opportunities. My name is David Wynn and I am offering
you the opportunity to own your very own business. This business requires that you
have a computer, be familiar with Internet/Email functions and know how to copy/cut
and paste.

As to the salary, it's totally up to you, as you will be running your own business,
the sky is the limit. What you will see represents a completely legal money making
business that anyone can run out of their home to generate a significant residual
income. You will receive full instructions and I will always be available to help you
and answer any questions you may have.

This is not a chain letter, money game, tele-com scheme or any of the multitudes of
dubious "business" offers that come through your e-mail box. This business will easily
generate a residual income of $2000 to $6000 every month with only a part-time
commitment (about 10 hours per week). A full-time commitment (about 30 hours per
week), based on statistics gathered from my current clients (and my own personal
experience), will translate into an income of $10,000 or more per month!

To prove my sincerity and confidence in this opportunity, there is NO CHARGE to join.
You will receive all the information to get started plus the first month's information
package ($90 value). If by a remote chance you are not satisfied with the program
after the first month and want to discontinue, you may by all means do so, and I will
not contact you again.

But on the other hand, if you are satisfied with the program and wish to continue
after the first month, that is when you would have to pay $90 for the next month's
information package. Since you DO NOT pay anything until after you are already
earning an incredible residual income, you have absolutely nothing to lose.

Re: how can I compile my code to run in windows ??

2002-02-09 Thread Randall R Schulz

Hello,

You must make it possible for Windows to locate the cygwin1.dll. If your
binary is in the same directory as cygwin1.dll, the system will find it (so
apparently the two are not co-located).

Putting the name of your Cygwin bin directory (in Windows format, e.g.
"D:\cygwin\bin") in your system-wide PATH environment will allow Windows to
find the DLL. (I can only confirm this under Windows 2000. That suggests it
would work under NT 4 and XP, too. Whether ME or 98 will work this way,
too, is something I do not know.)

Alternatively, you could launch your application via a ".bat" file that set
the PATH before executing your binary.

Lastly, you could put your program in the Cygwin bin directory and launch
it via a shortcut. That's probably not the best solution, since it mingles
your binaries with the Cygwin's own. I usually think it best to keep my
additions to the system (any system) in a place of their own.

Good luck.

at + bash

2002-02-09 Thread David

Hello

I am having a problem running perl in an at command on windows nt
because perl says it can't find some @INC libs I added. So, I'm
trying to run perl in a bash shell:

at 12:00 /every:M,T cmd /c "bash -c 'perl script.pl'"

However, bash will not start, saying:

bash.exe: warning: could not find /tmp, please create!

I checked the environment and have TMP=c:\tmp and for that matter
TEMP=c:\temp

But, when I run df, I only see
c: ... /chgdrive/c
i: /chgdrive/i

And I don't see the cygwin mounts c:\sys\cygwin ... /, etc.

I tried running mount in the at command but it doesn't do anything.

Please send your suggestions to me, copy the list:

Thanks,

David

Program behaves differently when called from script.

2002-02-09 Thread Rodrigo Medina

Hello,

I want to report a very strange behavior of bash (?, I really don't know), that
appeared after installing the last version of cygwin (the cygwin1.dll is of
Jan 21 2002, the previous one was of Dec. 2001). Everything was OK with the
new version, (I actually compiled succesfully xdvik), exept for the following
extrange behavior:

The program xmodmap of XFree86 works differently when its is called from
a shell script than when it is called from the terminal. The xmodmap program
is the sameone. More precisely if I run xmodmap directly everything is OK:

rmedina@LIMON ~
$ xmodmap .Xmodmap

rmedina@LIMON ~

$ cat script
#!/bin/sh
xmodmap .Xmodmap
exit

I get:
rmedina@LIMON ~
$ ./script
Standard: not found
For: not found
R.: not found
FUNCTIONS:: not found
.//xmodmap: 7: Syntax error: Unterminated quoted string

rmedina@LIMON ~
$

The beginning of the .Xmodmap file is the following:
rmedina@LIMON ~
$ head .Xmodmap
! Standard IBM-Microsoft 101/102 spanish keyboard map.
! For XFree86
! R. Medina. 2002/01/07

!
! FUNCTIONS: Spanish 'xmodmap' keyboard file for dynamically altering
!the X server's keysym array that it sends to X clients.
!
! How it was made: With xmodmap -pke the original map was extracted,
! which was an English International keyboard. The keys to modify

rmedina@LIMON ~
$

It seems that xmodmap, when it is called from the script, does not process
correctly the comment character "!".

I hope that someone can tell me if I am missing something.
bye.

Since, AFAIK, no one has ever formally submitted the patch, it is likely not
to ever be in the cygwin distribution.

I suppose they have a different working, try changing the "magic" line in the

It doesn't necessarily have to be on your website. If you release a CD with
the binaries + sources, you're covered.

You basically just can't rely on anyone else to provide the sources for you.

"Best" way to build a DLL?

2002-02-09 Thread Nousiainen

This seems to be the most complicated thing .. building a DLL file.
So, what is the best and recommended way to do the job using recent cygwin tools?

I've read autobook (http://sources.redhat.com/autobook/autobook/autobook_toc.html) and
it gives some good advice (I'm using autotools in my project), though there are some
problems
I've encountered. It recommends using _LTLIBRARIES and libtool to build DLL, and as
far as I know the building process of a DLL file is already integrated in gcc and ld,
so is the document
outdated? (I have to use both C and C++ code in my project, and when specifying
AC_PROG_CXX in configure.in file the configure script doesn't succeed, because it
tries to execute a file
called ltconfig which doesn't exist. I really don't have a clue what to do here...)
Dllhelpers (http://www.neuro.gatech.edu/users/cwilson/cygutils/V1.1/index.html) show
another, simple way (using the new dll features of ld) to build the file and it is the
only way I have
managed to build a working DLL. However, I don't have an idea how to get this working
smoothly with autotools.

So, what should I do? I'd appreciate if someone gave me an example of the
configuration files for autotools (Makefile.am and configure.in).

Re: Cygwin CVS

2002-02-09 Thread Charles Wilson

Please keep all cygwin-related email on the cygwin list. I've redirected
replies to go there.

Currently, cvs on cygwin is only supported as an interactive (e.g.
non-service) application. It is *possible* to have the inetd daemon run
it in :pserver: mode, but that takes some effort -- see the mailing list
archives over the last 30 days for some pointers.

The easiest thing to do is to get sshd running on the repository
machine, and on your client machine simple set:

CVSROOT=:ext:hostmachine:/repository/path
CVS_RSH=ssh

Then, you can use the normal commandine cvs client on your client
machine -- and it will connect to the repository machine via ssh.

home directory ended up in /usr/bin and not /home. As far as I could see
from /etc/profile it should be created in /home. Has anyone else
encountred this problem?

Any help would be appriciated!

Regards,
Mattias

Uh, no. There is no need for the mount command. It will royally confuse
things if you use it.

/tmp is created by setup.exe.

TCSH startup scripts failure

2002-02-09 Thread Michael

Hi

As of the latest version of Cygwin, there is a flaw in the tcsh startup
scripts in /etc and /etc/profile.d that causes tcsh to fail if $HOME
contains a space (eg "/home/John Smith")

Lines such as
if ( -r $HOME/.cshrc ) ...
will cause errors unless changed to
if ( -r "$HOME/.cshrc" ) ...

This appears to have been fixed for bash.

Cheers
Michael

Quick question, please help!

2002-02-09 Thread Simara

Christopher,

I've read your posts about Interix, and I know you are not happy about it,
but here comes the ugly question again:

How could I compile or use Xfree with Interix, I sure would use cygwin but
my boss really digs Interix because it is not emulated, and our tests with
most ported apps is really faster than using interix (way fast), please
help! or they will start coding the apps in visual basic and our current
linux boxes will have to be migrated to windows...

Thanks and sorry for the ugly question.

My original patches were inside the Cygwin DLL, Glenn moved them outside.
Now I'm intending to move some of them inside again. Is it OK given that
special disclaimer?

> Do you want to be the ksh maintainer for the cygwin distribution?

Yes, I'd volunteer for this job.
But...

- the AT&T build system is quite different from the GNU standard autotools,
so I' m not sure about how to post the sources.
- I might become UWIN tainted in two months or so. My job seems to require
obtaining a UWIN source code license. I must not contribute to Cygwin kernel
code then, of course. But maintaining ksh for Cygwin can surely be cleared
up with AT&T. In fact Cygwin is used at AT&T, too.

I'm not tainted yet, just to assure you, I don't want to get into legal
troubles also.

This is a public mailing list for non-xfree cygwin related topics.
Xfree questions do not belong here. Interix questions do NOT belong
here, unless they somehow relate to cygwin.

Let me see if I understand: You say "interix is better than cygwin, and
you must use interix regardless, because your boss likes it." So you
want OUR help to get your code working with a DIFFERENT product? Why
should we?

Please see http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html to
understand the motivations behind the coders on public mailing lists.
Then ask yourself, given that information, why subscribers to *this*
mailing list would assist you.

On the cygwin-xfree list, you *could* pose this question as "Can
cygwin-xfree work with the interix runtime instead of cygwin?" The
answer is probably no without significant work, but at least the
question would be (sortof) ontopic there. It is totally offtopic here.

I don't know what the question is. Interix *is* faster than cygwin. Interix
has some limitations, though. If you read past discussions you probably know
what they are.

Oh. Sorry. I didn't pay as much attention as I should have. I thought
this was a normal vague clueless "question". Instead, it was not just
clueless but *remarkably* pushy.

Chuck's response is correct of course. I do disagree slightly with
Chuck's suggestion to move this to the xfree mailing list.

This is off-topic for any cygwin mailing list. You're on your own.
Please don't bother the cygwin mailing lists with this type of question
again.

For the record, I'm not really happy or unhappy about Interix.
Discussions of how to get things working under Interix are just
off-topic. I don't know anything about Interix beyond the high level
stuff. And, again, discussing ways to get things working with Interix
is very obviously off-topic.

And, all of you who are now poised to send off a missive informing me of
various ways that mentioning Interix could conceivably be on-topic --
please don't bother. I don't need educating on the subject.

undefined reference to `_dll_a_iname' using dllwrap

2002-02-09 Thread Andrej Falout

Hello *,

I have a dll (libSQL_nosql.dll), that gets loaded in run-time, with dlopen(). I cannot
link this one.

This DLL uses some functions in another DLL (-laclshared = libaclshared.dll), that is
always linked with client program
(.exe) via it's export library (libaclshared.dll.a), and with first dll
(libSQL_nosql.dll), because it uses functions
from it. This one (-laclshared) links ok, using same make rules.

My first problem is that when I try to link libSQL_nosql.dll, I get undefined
reference to `libaclshared_dll_a_iname',
but have no idea who or where is supposed to define it.

My second problem is undefined reference to `_nm__status'; as you can see below,
__imp__status is auto-imported. What
the hack is `_nm__status' doing then?

Output:

dllwrap --driver-name gcc --def libSQL_nosql.def -o libSQL_nosql.dll nosql.o -L.
./.. -laclshared
Warning: resolving _status by linking to __imp__status (auto-import)
Warning: resolving _sqlca by linking to __imp__sqlca (auto-import)

fu06.o(.idata$3+0xc): undefined reference to `libaclshared_dll_a_iname'
nmth00.o(.idata$4+0x0): undefined reference to `_nm__status'
nmth03.o(.idata$4+0x0): undefined reference to `_nm__sqlca'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
dllwrap: gcc exited with status 1

I did a RTFM and tried searching for _a_iname without success.

Your help is very much appreciated,

RE: home directory problems

2002-02-09 Thread fergus at bonhard dot uklinux dot net

Yes. You are probably installing on W98? I believe the problem has been
identified and solved in principle and (presumably?) the solution will at
some stage be implemented. For the moment you can get round things as
follows:

mkdir /home/{yourname}

and move anything there that you need to, in the way of your own
.bash_profile, .bashrc, .inputrc, etc. (There may be none of these; but
whatever's currently in /usr/bin/{yourname}/ is probably specific to you.
When I experienced this problem, /usr/bin/{myname}/ was empty.)

Then edit the file /etc/passwd which probably looks something like this

 {yourname}::500:544::{yourname}:/bin/bash

to this:

 {yourname}::500:544::/home/{yourname}:/bin/bash

If you then close Cygwin and then start it up again everything should work
fine.

Please forgive me all, my mistake to write to the mailing list alias instead
of Christopher directly. Also forgive me for bringing up a way off-topic to
the list.

Let me shot a different question: Are there plans to make Cygwin a windows
Subsystem?

I truly like Cygwin, I'm sorry If I bothered the list.

Thanks a lot,

Asking me personally for help with a competing product would be just as
"off-topic".

No. That would be completely counter to the whole philosophy of Cygwin.
